Catching up, one of the few lib friends we are still willing to spend any time with, claimed years ago that the mental institutions were opened up by that evil Reagan as CA Guv. It was like the 911 conspiracy: firmly believed and no amount of discussion would be worth pursuing with any hope of succeeding.

Watching President Trump live in Korea. Man is our President full of amazing amounts of energy!

I was in Seoul 3 days back and was beat to heck after 2 weeks on the road and could hardly make it down to the bars in Itaewon.

The trees in Seoul are in their beautiful stages of autumn turning, but the leaves are still on the trees, and the colors are wonderful. Melania I can tell is a tad chilly as exiting the Limo she just turned up her purple collar, but she looks gorgeous and Trump seems to be very comfortable and having a good time. An exhausted President Hillary would already have been tossed into some SUV like a side of beef.

Of all the Asians I think the Koreans have the gaudiest and stupidest looking traditional hats. JMH, wherever she is, might disagree, but she'd have to work hard to change my mind.

Trump has taken along Tillerson, Jared Kushner, and Sara Huckabee Sanders as well, and just spotted all 3 in some outdoor receiving line, all looking very happy and chipper. Big smile on Rex's face which is great to see.

 GUS

It was heartwarming to watch Daddy. Unfortunately, Melania Trump isn't the BEAUTY that MOOOOOOCH Obama is. And the Obama's were so classy.

Via Insty, here's a link to a 37 Minute Homemade Video interview with the Plumber who shot the Church Shooter. EXCLUSIVE: Texas Massacre Hero, Stephen Willeford, Describes Stopping Gunman | Louder With CrowderM

Here's some fascinating bits from my first 15 minute listen.

His house is about a block from the Church. One of his daughter's came in and said she heard sounds like shooting, so he went downstairs to investigate, realized it was gunfire and was advised by a daughter it was a serious shooter with an AR type rifle at the Church.

He has been an NRA Instructor in the past. He unlocked his AR from his gun safe, grabbed a handful of ammo, then told his daughter to sit down and load a magazine with Amo, and he said he intentionally did that to keep her mentally occupied so she wouldn't come along outside and get involved.

He said he ran outside barefoot, but he did so because it went thru his mind that each bullet he heard was intended for somebody at the Baptist Church and he had to engage the shooter as rapidly as possible to save lives, so that's why he ran out barefoot---he had to.

He said he saw the helmeted shooter wearing his bullet proof vest and they had a 20 yard face-off, the gunman holding a pistol and firing at him, and him barefoot and partly hiding behind his neighbors pick-up truck, with his rifle lying across the hood of the truck and just his head showing. The shooter was firing at him and hitting the truck. He said he cannot explain, why but his mind worked amazingly rapidly and specifically, and being an NRA type he had the wits about him to recognize the type of Kevlar Bullet proof vest the perp was wearing, and it struck him that the vest's sides were vulnerable, only being held together by a velcro strap, so he started shooting at where he knew there would be no protection for the perp. Eventually the perp gets in his vehicle to flee while still firing bullets into the truck he is using as cover, and he is now returning fire by aiming for the perps head, and he can see the windows in the perps truck exploding from his shots as the perp floors the getaway vehicle and speeds off.

Then he recounts seeing the tattooed driver very close by, and telling him that he bad guy is the Church shooter, and the driver instantly understanding who the bad guy in the scenario is, and immediately off they go on the chase.

Fascinating, and what a humble man.

Miss Marple,

That had me thinking about a couple of odd LA/Hollywood style deaths over the last few years. For instance, I always wondered what was going thru the head of Brittany Murphy. I have some vague recollection that she thought she was being trailed by Govt agent guys, before croaking.

Never thought any more of it than OL describing beach erosion in front of his lot or the surveillance gadgets at his house.

Windandsea usually seemed relatively laid back and informative previously. But I did notice him criticizing what seemed a fairly innocuous comment by someone other than OL the other day (don't think it was joan either) and I thought "what's with that". His comments have seemed a little unchacteristic lately; no idea why.

AND
Buzzfeed subpoenaing DNC and Crowdstrike for proof of their claims of Russia hacking: (I'll put the link below)

"Aleksej Gubarev, a Russian technology executive, has sued BuzzFeed for libel for its decision to publish a series of memos authored by the former British spy Christopher Steele [paid for by DNC and Hillary campaign via FusionGPS]. Those memos — part of a so-called “dossier” of information about President Donald Trump’s alleged ties to Russia, include claims strongly denied by Gubarev that his companies were recruited by the Kremlin’s security organs to break into Democratic Party computer systems ahead of the 2016 election.

BuzzFeed is trying to figure out if the allegations relating to its libel suit are true as part of its defense strategy that could end up revealing details of the dossier and the DNC hack that have not been made public.

“One prong of our strategy is to prove that the dossier was being acted on and circulated by officials at the highest levels of government; but we would be remiss if we didn’t use every tool to determine the truth of what actually happened — and whether, as the dossier claims, Mr. Gubarev’s servers were behind the DNC hack,” Matt Mittenthal, a spokesperson for BuzzFeed News, told FP."

...

"According to a copy of the subpoena reviewed by FP, BuzzFeed is seeking “technical information and data obtained during the investigation into the Democratic Hack, including all host-based and network-based artifacts.” It is also seeking “non-public” analysis and reports into the DNC hack, and copies of the malware that was allegedly used in the attack."

Chiming in on the homeless topic from the last thread. Don't assume that the established homeless want homes and jobs more than they want to be where they are, especially if they're in a "homeless-friendly" city where they have freedom of movement and panhandling opportunities.

The temporarily homeless, meaning the recently evicted or people who recently lost their jobs and are staying with friends/relatives - that's different.

I had a homeless guy in my driveway for two years who has turned down countless offers of work and housing. He wants to be in the neighborhood and to sleep and drink in his car in relative safety. That's it. He doesn't want an apartment or a real job at all.

From RattlerGator;
The piece seems to have struck a chord and for that I am quite pleased.

RG,

This country is starved for your perspective of common sense, good old American virtues applied to the realm that is almost wholly dominated by criminal, divisive, self fascinated frauds like Sharpton, Jackson, Holder and Obama and now the BLM/SJW pismires.

The vast middle of people of all races who really do just want to get along have been as ignored as Trump's deplorables and largely overlap.

Other than Thomas Sowell, Shelby Steele, Larry Elder and a handful of others your viewpoint is almost unheard and desperately needed to heal the wounds the mountebanks and hustlers have intentionally pulled open and continue to insult. And your perspective is uniquely patriotic, just plain sensible and stated beautifully. I hope this was the start of something big because America needs to hear what you have to say the way a lost prospector on his knees in Death Valley needs a nice cool swig.

Porchlight, I think it was Don Surber who made the very good point (I thought) that Trump went to work IMMEDIATELY after his election. Thus, it SEEMS like a year has been completed, especially to our adversaries.

The man has put in phenomenal work, and so has Jeff Sessions (a very gracious hello to all you recalcitrants out on that damn Ledge).

Captain Hate

Porchlight, I think it was Don Surber who made the very good point (I thought) that Trump went to work IMMEDIATELY after his election. Thus, it SEEMS like a year has been completed, especially to our adversaries.

Our adversaries went full retard a year ago with no end in sight. And by "adversaries" I include the RINO obstructionists like Flake and Corker. And Ryan.

JohnH

Porch for the win!

I am amazed at smart people spouting simple solutions to complicated problems. As in let’s move the homeless to less dense environments or somebody else’s rent controlled apartments. Maybe just far enough away that we don’t have to see them. How’s that? What about life support logistics? Going to suspend their rights so we can move’m? Maybe create the Bureau of Homeless Affairs? That worked well for the Native Americans after all.

Old Lurker

Water under the bridge, guys, but thanks for having my back.

For the record, I do try to play two roles here and I hoped always with a smile and with a degree of tact.

The first is to stake out the world as seen by the 1% who got there by their own skills and hard work. There are certainly others here who fit that description too but as we talk of carving up the goose, we had best have a goose or two you can speak with.

The second role I play, on purpose, is the "glass half full...eyeore" point of view so that the thoughts of an old guy who has seen a lot of change in the country, but who knows a lot of history and economics and what the US has represented since 1789, can bring a dose of cold water to the optimism we all had when Hillary was defeated. In this role, I have had many a "dispute" with MM, Maryrose, Porch and others, but I think they all know that I do so with, I hope, a smile and tact. I certainly take their bullets in that same frame of mind.

Both of those goals, I am sure you all know who want to, are well served by the device I invented - The Ledge - to make my points when I think they are relevant. Not the least of my points about the Ledge is that nobody is "entitled" to enjoy it unless my friends and I want them there.

Such is the nature and usefulness of the metaphor.

Cocktails at 6PM.

Think about what they so often do; it many times boils down to just that.

narciso

You know I hadn't thought of that, but the notion that Hastings was under some kind of surveillance was rampant in Hollywood re that short lived Katherine heigl vehicle.

Old Lurker

Knowing that of course I don't desire the downside, but tell the truth: don't you wish Trump had been able to handle his transition the way the Crown Prince is handling his own?

Ignatz Ratzkywatzky

I wish Egg McMuffin and Kristol and Frum and the NR crew would sit down together and write themselves a Conservative Manifesto so we could all see just exactly what policies of Trump's don't meet their prescriptions.
We could also then compare them to RR's and Coolidge's and WFB's and Russel Kirk's and other giants and see just exactly who is less in tune with historical conservatism.
Their problem with Trump is less that he is betraying conservatism and more that he is revealing and reversing their betrayal of it, with their interventionist FP, their accommodation of progs, their almost complete abandonment of culture wars, including their softheadedness on the 2nd amendment and abortion and most crucially their effing delight in losing honorably.
They make me sick.

Appalled

RG is a remarkable thing -- a cheerful Trumpist. His optimism takes him to some strange spots (particularly regarding the ultimate destination of certain investigation.) But it is a nice thing to see in a movement that sees itself as a last hope of arresting permanent American decline. Let's face it, that viewpoint is by definition dour, angry and dark. And we all need some sunshine.

Sue

Something about Stephen Willeford that daddy didn't get to in his 5:06 AM post...he is growing out his Santa beard because he rides his motorcycle with the men from the First Baptist Church delivering toys to underprivileged children in Wilson County at Christmas.

Can I kill that SOB that walked into the church again?

Appalled

Iggy:

We could also then compare them to RR's and Coolidge's and WFB's and Russel Kirk's and other giants and see just exactly who is less in tune with historical conservatism.

Those guys all disagreed with each other. Trump and Coolidge are probably pretty close.

Sue

One more tidbit from Mr. Willeford's interview...he has lived in Sutherland Springs his entire life, his parents lived there, his grandparents lived there. Some of the people in the church that were killed he has known his entire life. He also didn't know Johnnie's name until the ordeal was over.

narciso

Exactly trump is certainly more to the right of Nixon and more in the Reagan realm, on foreign policy we keep forgetting that open ended foreign expeditionary forces were not s gop tradition, rollback and brinksmanship Dulles twin cards were put in place as a critique of Truman, but also as a cost saving measure. Ajax and success were effective in the short term not requiring direct military intervention. Dulles created cento as a proxy although the fall of nuri al said weakened it

JFK supported counterinsurgency because it was the new , but they failed at the bay of pigs doubled down under mongoose which was essentially the same support plan we had for partisans in eastern Europe. According to mortar we had some success until Harriman and co started paying attention to halberstsm and before we knew it diem was dead.

Ignatz Ratzkywatzky

Is there someone not dour, angry and dark about their political enemies? (we're no longer allowed to have political opponents in the US once one side decided to fundamentally transform the US)

narciso

Kirk was certainly more dour on govt potential then say buckley who had just come from a stint with the company in Mexico. Coolidge came from the progressive goo goo side of the party, until the Boston strike.

Appalled

Iggy:

Is there someone not dour, angry and dark about their political enemies?

Intriguing question. I tend to view political enemy as someone who sees my way of life, or the libertiess I am used to, and wants to destroy it. I don't think that's too many people.

There is another class of folks who I would call political opponents. I disagree with them, but they don't make me angry and dark.

Ignatz Ratzkywatzky

They agreed on far more than they disagreed.
Which is my point. If forced to sit down and write out their policy prescriptions, if they're truly conservative they would agree with the vast majority of what Trump is doing.
But they vary more with traditional conservatism than Trump does and even where they agree they are too blinkered and yes, reactionary to admit it.
He upset their cozy, respectable, loser, neo-con apple cart.

Captain Hate

I voted for Gillespie this morning, but let's face it: complete loser. Ran a terrible race for Senate, so hey... I know... let's run him for governor. With a state party this hapless, it's no wonder the Democrats have turned the commwealth blue. People also forget that he oversaw the RNC for some of the worst years of the Bush era, which led to Democrat supermajorities in both houses, and the election of the boy king, his majesty Barack Hussein Obama, Second of His Name, Lord of the Faculty Lounge, Preezy of the Fifty-Seven States, Grand Imam of Highland Park, Winner of the Nobel Prize, and Regent of the Four Putts.
