Ok!

The book is officially a joke!

derwill

So some of it might be true, and some of it was surely lies. And since he wasn't specific on which parts might be true and which parts were surely lies, he's basically disavowed everything in the entire book. But a whole lot of suckers have already bought the book, so there is that.

And we conservatives think we feel like Charlie Brown with Lucy and the football?

Laugh at all those Never Trumpers and Resisters who are constantly being told that this, this, this is finally going to be The Thing that gets Trump booted out of office, only to have the football pulled out from under them yet again.

The author and the media have done their jobs. Bannon is screwed.

Porchlight

Maybe Wolff was fed a series of barium meals and the final product is going to reveal the last of the remaining leakers.

I still wonder if Bannon is in on it with Trump.

Neo

Wolff’s recklessness fuels the Trump administration’s critique of journalists and the media. It suggests that journalists really are out to get the president — after all, in Fire and Fury, Wolff suggests that journalists will print anything, so long as it casts Trump in a bad light. The rewards are clear: His cavalier reporting has led to TV bookings, a #1 Amazon bestseller, and insane traffic for any of the outlets that agreed to publish his work.

derwill

I have a different theory on the leaking (in general--not specifically with regard to this silly book). And that is that Trump (or his people) have known for quite some time now who the leakers are--like Shiff in Congress--and they are deliberately fed false information, which damages the MSM, who got trapped into putting forth what can then be labeled fake news in a Trump tweet and by Sarah. But it also damages the leaker himself, who eventually becomes such an unreliable source for the MSM that they are reluctant to rely on him.

The public loses trust in the MSM, and the MSM loses trust in their leakers.

So we are polling which journalists are trustworthy? How about you are only as good as your sources and that the journalists are all whores selling a narrative for whoever pays them to spin that narrative. All the Presidents Men were nothing without Deep Throat Felt and Herridge, Carter and Solomon are only as good as their white hat sources who have chosen them as the leakers of the news that we on the right treasure.

That is one of the lessons of this Bannon -Wolff kerfuffle. You are only as good as your sources and you have to weigh if as Lebron would say they are blowing smoke up your a**.

Sloppy Steve may not have been so sloppy since he picked Wolffe who would not verify anything and listening to Wolffe talking point on radio right now that Trump is child like and impetuous.

Yes like waiting until Christmas for the tax bill and the like. Trump has a time table and that is what the Camp David meetings is this week to lay out the agenda and timetable and whiteboard for how Trump wants the narrative to play out. His childlike outer appearance masks his calculations on how to read the political map correctly.

Prime example he has put the dems and GOPe on defense on the immigration issue. Chain migration and lottery system and even HB-1 may be written out of new immigration law.

Trump goes berserker when his family is maligned. That is his MO.

Bannon was "quoted" as being outraged that Mini-Trump would follow Ankle-Bracelet Manafort into an opposition research meeting with relatively unidentified rooskies and bring zero members of the campaign legal team or, let alone, have consulted them prior to this ill advised hook up.

At the time this was revealed JOM's concensus was very similar to Bannon's.

Now a lying author says that Bannon called them treasonous and unpatriotic so I guess the basis of his alleged beef is irrelevant.

I still agree that the move by Don Jr was stupid.

YMMV

Captain Hate

Glenn Reynolds is speculating about why Trump, a PR expert, would use a cease and desist order he knew would elevate the book:

what if (as Jack Goldsmith suggests) Trump has never been the focus of Mueller’s investigation, and now it’s zeroing in on Bannon? The feud over the book establishes lots of space between Trump and Bannon, and if Bannon’s indicted Trump can say “hey we fired him already.” And since everyone seems to think Bannon’s the main source for Wolff, an indictment helps discredit the book. Happily for Wolff, not until after he’s hit the bestseller list. Bonus point: Trump and Wolff seem to have been pretty friendly for quite a while.

https://pjmedia.com/instapundit/285187/

Someone also said Trump and Wolff have known each other a while.

Extraneus

Ooops. "Someone" one sentence earlier.

Miss Marple the Deplorable

I agree with Captain Hate.

Trump's children, particularly Ivanka and her husband Jared, are more liberal than the President. This doesn't bother me, and it is not unexpected due to ties with the Jewish community in New York and the fact that they are younger. They have, however, been very supportive of the President.

I don't think anyone in the administration was as populist as Bannon, and that includes the President. Bi-lateral trade deals, good jobs, and lower taxes are not the exclusive province of the populists.

Furthermore, Bannon has pushed to the forefront people who have a bit of the nutter in them, which I am sure made the Trump kids wince. (I know it did me.)

The going after the kids thing was immensely foolish, whether that came from Bannon or from Wolff's interpretation of what Bannon said. Since Bannon hasn't retracted the statements, I have to assume it came from him and it's what he thinks.

Trump would never have put his kids into the line of fire like that.

I go with Bannon getting way ahead of himself on how much influence he thought he had, and trying to manipulate staffing through the leaks was pretty disloyal.

I think Trump would have probably kept quiet about Bannon even after the Moore defeat, but the book was like "shots fired" so he had to retaliate.

Who else was pushed to the forefront in these races?

Either Bannon does not have any power and there will be no stupid battle within the conservative movement or he has the power to push forward the wrong people while the right people don't get pushed forward for some reason.

I think the real problem is how quickly someone is discarded when the cult of personality is more important than the cause.

Bannon, last year, made it clear that we are at war with the media. JOMers quoted him and we all applauded. The media fights back and now we are at war with Bannon.

Things Bannon has pushed which I, a Trump supporter from early on, do not believe in:

1. A refusal to get into foreign wars. While I think that this should seldom be done, you cannot remove the possibility or your enemies feel emboldened.

2. Tariffs. A blanket iport tax is counter-productive if we want to sell our goods overseas. I favor bi-lateral trade deals like the President is doing.

3. Punitive taxes on the rich. We NEED rich people for investment and as incentive for others to work hard and achieve. I do not favor punishing rich people for their success.

4. Anti-Mexican talk. (Laura Ingraham is guilty of this as well.) All of the things to do with immigration reform should be applied to both border-jumpers and visa over-stayers, without regards to ethnic origin. Chain migration is more of a problem for the refugee communities, if you ask me.

5. Attacks on General McMaster, Rex Tillerson and others in the administration, done through Breitbart.

‘Complete invention’: [Tony] Blair denies telling Trump UK may have spied on him

In his already bestselling new book Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House, author Michael Wolff says the the former prime minister had a secret meeting with Trump’s son-in-law and senior aide Jared Kushner.

Wolff wrote that Blair suggested there was a possibility “that the British had had the Trump campaign staff under surveillance, monitoring its telephone calls and other communications and possibly even Trump himself”.

Wolff’s book also repeated speculation that Blair had been angling to be Trump’s Middle East envoy.

Blair suggested Wolff had made up both claims.

Interviewed on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme he said: “This story is a complete fabrication, literally from beginning to end. I’ve never had such conversation in the White House, outside of the White House, with Jared Kushner, with anybody else.”

Old Lurker

I'm not big fans of the Trump kids, myself. I mean I like them and all and I appreciate their loyalty to their dad, but they ain't Trump. (Though young Barron does appear to be a time lord.)

I just don't see Trump blowing up the Wolff book unless he had something to gain by it. And Trump does have something to gain by distancing himself from Bannon - actually or artificially.

Only trepidation is if Trump caves too much to the GOPe in selecting candidates to run for the senate and retiring congresscritter seats. Ryan already completely neutered but McConnell with the one person majority and what happened in Alabama still holds some sway.

Miss Marple the Deplorable

TK,

If you want to be insulting, go right ahead.

I. Don't. Care.

What has Bannon risked by supporting Trump through the election? Nothing. He actually made money and got a lot of influence from being on the White House staff.

In return for that, he attacked the President's family.

Screw that. That isn't me being fickle, it's me recognizing a backstabber.

Trump, on the other hand, risked his business, his fortune, his family, and his very life to run. If you don't think a loss would have wound up with him and his family in jail (except for maybe Barron) you are very blind. Let me remind you of this quote from one of the Clinton lackeys, David Plouffe:

"Trump must not only be defeated, but destroyed, so that his kind shall not rise again."

So my loyalty is to the guy who risked everything for this country, not the hanger-on who took advantage.

My only backtrack on this would happen if Bannon appears with Trump on Monday and describes how the whole media was played to follow this stupid book while world peace was solved or something like that.

Porchlight

Fair enough, henry.

However, it MAY be that Bannon's goal is not to get these candidates elected but to frighten the GOPe. He needed that Moore win to accomplish that, though, and he didn't get it. However, having supported Strange, Trump comes out smelling like a rose.

What if the goal is to make Trump seem like the wise middle ground between Bannon and the GOPe in 2018? Then Trump's endorsed candidates (which will sometimes be GOPe and sometimes not) will be the Goldilocks option.

Triangulation, if you will.

Threadkiller

I didn't mean to insult you with the word fickle. I chose poorly.

Sorry.

I do see a lot of rethinking when it becomes convenient and I think that is why the conservatives flounder and ultimately complain about the wrong candidates being at the top of their tickets.

Bannon knows how to fill that void. Trump knew this. Why else did he hire him?

TK, for the record I've never been a big fan of Bannon. Like Rove, the main reason I tolerate him is how insane he makes the idiots on the left. But imo he's an opportunistic placeholder who took over from Breitbart and is a relative second rater who has somewhat damaged the brand.

In my response yesterday to boatbuilder I mentioned a Robert George. He is on the Board of Bradley as is cleta mitchell. George will used to be a member of their Board.

I actually learn a great deal from books and reports that I know are not true in certain respects. What is missing and what is being misrepresented leaves quite a trail if you already know what is going on. Usually it relates to a behavioral science or neuropsychological technique that the school the parents believe is their "port in the storm" to escape "the evil Common Core and data mining" is also using. The technique is what cause the desired changes to the student, which in turn constitute being effective, which entitle a charter company, for example, to expand into new states with federal money.

I can't speak to the functioning brains part, but given 1/3 don't vote and 1/3 voted HRC, that is 2/3 of the population that think the Clintons haven't committed any crimes.

derwill

I think the easiest explanation is the most likely. Actually two possible easy explanations . . .

1) The Bannon quotes were never spoken by Bannon, but are rather among the lies that Wolff has admitted to including in the book.

2) Wolff flattered Bannon, and tricked him into saying stuff he shouldn't have. And then Wolff manipulated or fudged what Bannon said to put it in the worst possible light.

Unlike a lot of other people, Bannon has not yet denied what he has been quoted as saying, so I'm thinking #2 is most likely what happened.

Also, I think there that when Wolff was conducting his interviews (such as they were) there was a real power struggle going on between Bannon and the kids, and Wolff played on that to manipulate Bannon into saying stuff he probably now regrets.

A struggle Bannon should never have indulged in, because he was destined to lose. Where I come from, family comes first. Always. No matter what. And I suspect Trump is the same way.

Porchlight

henry, they could have believed that the Clintons are dirty and corrupt but that Trump was worse. I know a lot of Dems in that category. They supported Obama over Hillary in 2008 and Bernie over Hillary in 2016.

I don't know what to make of the people who don't vote. I can't relate to that at all.

Captain Hate

I can speak to some of this. In my family we have a variety of political persuasions: conservative Republican; common-sense moderates who were dems but have given up on them & went Trump; union democrats; VERY liberal people who support the gay agenda; and people who keep their mouths shut and don't tell anyone anything (probably the smartest ones).

Consequently, we do not discuss politics much because it ends in shouting. I can only discuss Trump with my son, grandson, and 2 of my sisters. The rest are off limits for any political stuff and I don't even go to their facebook pages.

What I know from my daughter is that ALL of them appeal to authority by quoting the New York Times, Washington Post, CNN, or one of the networks. When I am trying to prove a very innocuous point to my daughter (like Trump didn't remove the Lincoln bust or that he doesn't hate black people) I look for photos and stories in the big papers.

It is my opinion that my daughter, who was once a fan of G. Gordon Liddy's radio show, has been brainwashed by her schooling and her contacts with art school friends. I have noticed that on individual issues she is becoming more common-sense in her thinking, but it is probably going to take another 10 years for her to wise up.

For example, she is CONVINCED that she will not get any sort of tax cut. Her thinking on this is based on her watching clips on CNN and what her friends say. I told her to look at her check in February, and she just rolls her eyes, like I am telling her a fairy tale.

The best thing the President could do is get these people to just report the damn news, but I have lost hope in that. The next best thing would be to have a new network, one that appealed to young people.
