First?

Old Lurker

Hi Porch.

Porchlight

Hi OL. I couldn't catch up with the other threads, so I'm starting fresh here.

narciso

Morning Jeh had effectively shut down Phil haneys targeting center, that what the lawsuit against heck was about

Old Lurker

I do the same. It works because now that they have been told not to, more posters bring over their good-ones from the prior thread so it makes it easy for us to stay current.

Captain Hate

According to the Horde this is what I'm missing:

Excuses for US olympic athletes:
Trump sucks, Pence sucks, #MeToo, food no good, it's too cold, it's too windy, Global warming, climate change, Park City training complex not good enough, I'm a victim, Ihave the flu, I have a cold, i have my period, rink ice soft. ski run too icy, i'm getting hit on, Europeans want it more, not enough blacks, whole thing is based around in- equality, broke a nail, trouble sleeping, time zones, too much pressure. On and on.

European women:
Ledecka won a gold on a pair of borrowed skis.

Another Bob

Apparently, NBC showed the homosexual skier kissing his boyfriend. When asked about it, the skier said "if I'd have known we'd have made out".

Of course he would have. Isn't that the point of Olympics coverage anymore?

Another Bob

Jack is Back!

Good morning from socked-in First Coast Florida where the sun is trying its damnest to burn off the fog.

In re using trusts and lawyers to buy homes and keep the owner secret, it is the normal practice in the Hamptons to use an LLC as the title holder. I have yet to see any home on Gin Lane or Meadow Lane listed other than an LLC selling and another LLC buying.

But that doesn't stop an intrepid reporter from researching the LLC and finding its major partners.

Another Bob,

Tapper's salary is $300,000/year and the taxes and mortgage payments on the house are around $280,000.

The author makes the point that his wife isn't wealthy and is a stay-at-home mom, and that he didn't have much equity built up since he lived in a shabby apartment until a few years ago.

Miss Marple the Deplorable

Going with the mysterious sources of income category, I'll take suddenly wealthy Congressmen for $500, Alex.

Another Bob

I read that link MM. Tapper has to be making more than $300K.

Miss Marple the Deplorable

WAnother Bob,

That is the only part that shuoold be investigated further.

Maybe he's trying to draw Tapper out by low-balling his salary. LOL!

Comanche Voter

As for the "Resistance" nit wits? To paraphrase an old saying, "Stuff 'em if they can't take a joke."

Extraneus

I'm enjoying this Laura Ingraham calling out of LeBron James thing. Now the high-school dropout says he won't stop spouting off about politics because:

"I mean too much to society, I mean too much to the youth, I mean too much to so many kids that feel like they don't have a way out and they need someone to help lead them out of the situation they're in."

Of course, she can now question how an ignorant jock came to mean a lot to society, and what that says about the kids he's "leading."

Lots of other butt-hurt jocks are weighing in as well.

https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/22481008/lebron-james-cleveland-cavaliers-doubles-will-continue-discuss-social-issues

Another Bob

Tapper: "Chief Washington correspondent" and his own daily show? Definitely way more than $300k.

Captain Hate

LeBron graduated high school.

Extraneus

Didn't know that. Didn't he come out as a junior or something?

Another Bob

Wow. Lebron does think highly of himself doesn't he.

Not the sharpest knife in the drawer. Tells you a lot about the people he surrounds himself with too.

Five years after he quits basketball, it'll be "Lebron who?".

maryrose

Ext:
Like it or not LeBron is an inspiration to these kids even though he attended private high school in Akron.
Many hope to have a career like his but will be sadly disappointed if they put all those eggs into that one basket.
Clarice:
An excellent “Pieces”.
I love how people from JOM are featured in it.Of course no one summarizes our current situation better and the tweets from President Trump are the icing on the cake.
Ed:
I enjoy your posts very much.
Unlike Jane, Henry and yourself , Iwould like to be a hermit but my family won’t let me.

maryrose

Another Bob:
Ah no wrt LeBron who?
He will rank up there with Jordan, Kareem, Johnson, DrJ, Larry Bird et al.

Captain Hate

No, he was on the cover of Sports Illustrated as a junior iirc (maybe before but he was the first non senior). He declared for the NBA draft immediately on graduating.

Just to be clear imo he's making a fool out of himself by ragging on DJT all the time and these dogshit statements about doing that for the youth just displays his ignorance.

Extraneus

Yeah, the point she's making is that the political views of celebrities and jocks probably shouldn't be taken so seriously by the yutes. Lots of people have made that same point but she appears to be over the target.

I just find the whining kind of fun.

Jane

I bet Tapper makes a million bucks a year at least.

I'm sorry CAPN, I watched the MENS figure skating competition, and you can't tell which one of the MEN is having his period.

Old Lurker

"But that doesn't stop an intrepid reporter from researching the LLC and finding its major partners."

Unless you do that in my case and you discover that the LLC is owned by another LLC in another state and the second state knows only the name of the law firm which set it up. If they get through that, they will find a Trust.

That said, Lois Lerner and anybody else at the IRS knows the whole chain.

:-(

Another Bob

You've missed the point Maryrose. What impact do those five have on society? Who talks about them? Who asks "I wonder what Doctor J thinks about this?" Answer: Nobody.

Lebron is no different. As soon as the media finds the next shinier object, and the marketers find someone who sells more shoes, Lebron will be spit out like used gum.

Old Lurker

Snorfle.

Captain Hate

I just find the whining kind of fun.

For someone who's managed his career effectively otherwise he's incredibly dense about this, particularly being from a state that voted for DJT. He bought into Cock Curious's garbage hook line and sinker. I have a feeling the ESPN dimwits have fed into this too, particularly when they ragged on Jordan for being too apolitical as if they're these great thinkers.

Here's some free advice: alienating approximately half of a potential market isn't smart.

Old Lurker

Cap'n "Here's some free advice: alienating approximately half of a potential market isn't smart."

Sadly, that thinking is why we get so much gay ice skating, in depth deep background sob stories, and synchronized swimming in the Olympics rather than, you know, sports.

:-)

Beasts of England

Trump's tweets from this morning are stunning. He's be a fine addition to JOM!! ;)

sammy small

Maybe they should shorten the Dunning–Kruger effect to the LeBron effect.

Old Lurker

This headline "Human speech will be replaced by brain to brain communication by 2050, claims expert"

Got me thinking about Diogenes wandering through a newsroom holding up his cell phone looking for bars, any bars.

Miss Marple the Deplorable

Captain Hate,

Celebrities involved in poliics can be traced back to JFK, whose brother-in-law, Peter Lawford, brought a whole bunch of Hollywood people out to campaign for him. I remember it distinctly because I was in junior high and the idea that movie stars cared about politics was something new. (Especially coming out of the Eisenhower years.)

Ever since then, stars from Hollywood have opened their mouths and annoyed half of the population, one way or the other. Now sports guys are doing it as well.

I think this has been a bad influence on American politics and society in general. I wish we could dial things back to the days when I didn't know how anyone voted.

clarice

Buy are those mouthpieces overpaid. No wonder there's no network money left to pay actual--you know real--reporters.

Old Lurker

And THIS headline "Passenger plane crashes in Iran, killing all 66 on board" got me wondering immediately which Clinton-Kerry-Obama connections were on it.

Captain Hate

Another Bob

Clarice, they don't make actual reporters anymore.

The crap we see at the national level is happening at the local levels too. I've seen the local papers (as expressed by their websites) in all the places I've lived go the same direction. Younger people are brought in that have been steeped in the nonsense, and the older ones continue to think the AP, WaPo, NYT are their betters and follow their lead.

Curious what SBW thinks. I know he's done his share of tilting at the AP windmill.

Beasts of England

I haven't heard anything about it, Captain. Some happy talk about us making it to the big tournament this year, but I don't know if that's accurate either...

CNN's type of Repuke:

''Sunday on CNNs State of the Union, Gov. John Kasich (R-OH) said President Donald Trumps tweet saying the FBI missed the warning on Florida shooter because they are working on the Russia investigation is an absurd statement. ''

What an a**hole. Ashamed he's my governor. Ungrateful shit he is. PDT was offering condolences and called Kasich about the 2 murdered policemen almost before the story came on the local news. I doubt Obama would have taken time out from his golf game.

It reminds me of how I actually believed we had LOST the Tet Offensive until "We Were Soldiers" was released and people started discussing it on radio talk shows.

Just catching up:

Great Pieces, Clarice, and thanks for the cite.

It would be amusing to see an actual journalist asking LeBron questions like, "What do you think of the tax reform legislation?"

Stephanie Nene Not your normal Grandma

Mentioned to my hubs last night that local reportage is the shits, too.

Some new 'at the scene' reporter couldn't pronounce O co nee county and kept saying O con ee county. If you don't know the damn area you are reporting about, maybe you should educate yourself before pontificating about things. Just as ignorant of the suburbs as the DC fools are about flyover country.

Old Lurker

Steph, my pet gripe of late is that the on air talent all seem to have gone to some "actors' seminar for TV" where they were told to emote more with their hands, words, and facial gestures.

So now they give you BS while looking and sounding like 7th grade acting class.

Old Lurker

Course, my other gripe having watched DC stations for 50 years is how come the stations can't get rid of the news readers who were cute and on their games back in the 70's but now just look as old and washed up as, well, I do?

Miss Marple the Deplorable

During Colonial times, Kasich would have chided the Minute Men for running and shooting from cover, rather than facing the redcoats in open fields to be "honorably" mowed down.

This headline "Human speech will be replaced by brain to brain communication by 2050, claims expert"

The guy ManTran was mentioning who had tumor surgery recently was an early adopter of a Bluetooth headset for cellphones.

They had to temporarily remove his ear to get to the tumor.

He was on the phone morning till night.

You want something like that implanted?

middyfeek

There is a point on the spectrum of celebrity where they become somewhat divorced from reality. They surround themselves with sycophants who tell them what they want to hear.

When LeBron James feels the urge to make public comment about politics he's really just embarrassing himself. So let him go.

When celebrities step out side their field of expertise their always on very thin ice.

Stephen Hawking, who supposedly has an IQ of three zillion, feels the need occasionally to say publicly and categorically that there is no God. Perhaps he thinks his status as a cosmologist warrants this.

The simple truth is that he has not the slightest idea whether or not God exists.

exdemocrat

“It would be amusing to see an actual journalist asking LeBron questions like, "What do you think of the tax reform legislation?"”

Exactly. Instead of inviting celebs to shut up, the far better approach would be to see their vacuous, soundbite views properly exposed for the nonsense they are.

We’d need actual journalists for that, however.

Stephanie Nene Not your normal Grandma

That, too. OL. The ad libs by the on air copy readers is exasperating.

And the local news here is 4 - 7 with hourly resets reporting the same stories over and over and over BUT each of the first two report the story with a tease of "more to this story we are putting together for the 5 pm or 6 pm newscasts" to which I always bitch "what the f were you doing earlier in the day that you couldn't broadcast the whole damn story at once!!" I don't want to watch 3 damn hours of the same shit with more added each time. I thought 3 hours of news was so you could get it all at a time that was convenient to you, not to snag ratings numbers for 3 hours. Asses.

Davod

I was just flicking through the TV channels and came across a PBS show - Solutions Journalism. Is that a new name for activist journalism?

Captain Hate

From the Gateway Pundit link at 12:11,

The indictment named 13 Russian operatives from the internet Research Center LLC. in St. Petersburg who attempted to “interfere” with the 2016 US presidential election.

Shouldn't more be made of the fact that the indictments were explicitly not for interfering with the election, but for fraud of various kinds? Every MSM outlet is reporting it as some variant of "Russians indicted for interfering with the election," which is fake news. Was it McCarthy who pointed out that the reason for that is otherwise they would have had to indict Steele, and thereby implicated Felonia von Pantsuit's campaign?

Gen. Dumas
‏ @paulhue
1h1 hour ago

High Schools have gotten way, way too big. Large school size only helps matters unrelated to scholarship, such as maximizing sports team performance & having many goofoff electives. Among the casualties of large school size: academic performance & good conduct.

Gen. Dumas‏ @paulhue

Turns out that low student number for the entire school is much more helpful than low student:teacher ratio. Money saved by herding so many students into shopping mall-sized schools is offset by lower academic performance & higher behavior incidents, especially when extrapolated.

sbw

Another Bob: Curious what SBW thinks.

From Take Back Your News - final draft finished today:

Journalism worked better when our grandparents were children because most newspapers were locally owned and edited by an independent and curmudgeonly lot. They held multiple wire services accountable for content.
Managers of the Associated Press—a member-owned cooperative wire service—told publishers back then, “You own us.”

“Damn right we do,” owner/editors replied. Quality reporting was expected. At annual national and state bureau meetings they held AP accountable for it.

Since 1950, the total number of daily newspapers dwindled from 1,772 to perhaps less than 1,300 today and corporate newspaper chains with different priorities swallowed many of those that remain. Their accountants eying the bottom line reduced the number and experience of reporters and editors. Numbers have diminished, and the quality, too.

Radio stations of the 1950s were often derided for a “rip-and-read” approach to wire service news. Staff tore wire service copy off the Teletype and, without looking at it first, read it unchanged and unedited on the air. Many newsrooms place copy on pages unchanged and unedited before printing. Local wire editors don’t see a need to edit wire copy. Copy that is not reviewed at the local level gives national media a license to fail.

clarice

https://theconservativetreehouse.com/2018/02/17/behind-the-sanctimonious-tweets-james-comey-has-a-very-serious-book-problem/

And SBW most metro areas had 2 papers, a morning and evening one. One was usually more conservative and the other more liberal.
