Even the formerly innocuous libs cannot resist the temptation to virtue signal where Trump is concerned:

Larry Sabato
‏Verified account @LarrySabato

Last night’s Trump rally proved again that vulgar antics thrill his base. The office hasn’t made the man; instead, Trump has re-made the office, lowering standards of acceptable presidential behavior so far that it will take great efforts by his successors to repair the damage.

Hi, Kev--here I am! Just out of the shower after painting for six hours (am bespotted). That's very cool re Percy's correspondence with Foote. I love the Civil War trilogy--it is so humane--but I love Percy even more, who felt the call and went all in, and then made sense of it as a scientist--and then a semiotician/linguist. All the novels are great, but have you read Lost in the Cosmos or its more complete cousin, Message in a Bottle?

Yesterday on one of the local Japanese channels they had an interesting segment, all in Japanese so I couldn't understand it, of possible ways the ancient Easter Islanders moved their carved statues from the quarry to the their hillside settings. "my nutsack and my tool have ballooned" - words I never expected to read on JOM😵😂

RG,

Just caught up on your current ailment. I feel horrible about it of course and know you must be feeling something awful, but it reminded me a bit of that marvelous description in Hakluyt's "Voyages and Discoveries" (1582) about the South Asian practice of sewing various small bells into the "nut sack and/or the tool" in order to liven one's step and enhance pleasure for the Mrs:

A woman told me later that the inventor of it [penis bells] was a queen of Pegu. Indeed, in her time there were a lot of inhabitants of that kingdom having [same-sex] affection. They inherited us one of the greatest punishments [penis bells for men]. The women with their vasquinas (a kind of petticoat) kept open from the navel to below, so that their thighs were exposed when walking. They did that so the men would have more taste [interest] in women and sodomy would drop. The bubbles may be of gold, silver or brass… Countless small shops in cities and towns sell nothing but such bruncioles. Those who do not wear them have bad reputation as [gay] men.[20]

Antonio Pigafetta, one of the few men to complete Magellan's Voyage around the world in 1519-1522 mentions the practice as well, so we know it was quite popular for centuries in South East Asia if not still so:

Figure 8 (above) A geographical distribution of penis inserts of every type (orange line) and penis bells (red circle), and their historical spread (red arrows) and spread in modern time (blue arrows).

...Use of penis bells by the Lao was also mentioned in the book of John Bulwer, Anthropometamorphosis (1653). Other European records also mention penis bells among the Siamese, including the Portuguese Tome├м Pires in 1515, the Florentine Francesco Cerletti’s observation of Siamese sailors in Macao in 1600, and a Dutch record of golden bells worn by wealthy Siamese in Patani.[32] Similar documentation is also found for people in Tenasserim and Martaban in 1511, and Arakan in 1724.[33]

Anyhow, just thought I'd toss it out there as a suggestion for something to do if you're bored, since you're already in pain and apparently already 'ballooned,' so why let a good crisis go to waste is my motto, especially since Mrs RG might approve:)

Over to you Anonamom---is this a healthy practice in your professional opinion?

Who else is on Lake Como? I was thinking the Pope's summer residence, but that's on another lake.

Dongo on Lake Como is where Mussolini was captured and I think executed.

...On 25 April he fled Milan, where he had been based, and tried to escape to the Swiss border. He and his mistress, Claretta Petacci, were captured on 27 April by local partisans near the village of Dongo on Lake Como. Mussolini and Petacci were shot the following afternoon, two days before Adolf Hitler's suicide.

This Spectator link may or may not be helpful (probably the latter;) A beautiful place to die: Mussolini at Lake Como

If your destiny is to be shot dead with your mistress, where better than Lake Como, which, in the words of Shelley, ‘exceeds anything I ever beheld in beauty, with the exception of the Arbutus Islands in Killarney’?

daddy, several years ago you posted the link of astronomy picture of the day. I bookmarked it. Have you seen today's? Made me think of you. :) Really cool video.

https://apod.nasa.gov/apod/astropix.html

daddy

Joan,

Very cool video. Especially love the Aurora Borealis at the beginning, and cruising over the big lit cities makes me feel like I'm riding shotgun with Otto in the radioactive car at the end of one my fav low budget movies, Repo-Man.

I've mentioned this before but after seeing that video I'll tell it again for fun. We have a former Astronaut at the company. He's a wonderful guy, extremely modest, and he's way junior to me, so I'm lucky every once in a while to get him as my co-pilot.

I read people decently I think, and I knew thru the grapevine that he was not boisterous at all and preferred to just be treated as one of the boys, so on our first trip together when we met in Ops I treated him just like I would any other 'newby' and he had no idea I knew who he was and what he'd done in his previous life since I never mentioned it and we just went about our business like normal, but then about 2 hours into the leg we were over northern Canada at midnight and the Aurora was going off like crazy to my left so we turned out all the lights in the cockpit and just stared at the fab light show for a while, and after a bit I simply said to him, "So what's it look like from up there?"

He very matter of factly deadpanned back something like, "Pretty much the same."

Then a few minutes later he simply asked, "So how'd you know?" and I laughed and just explained how most guys knew but we didn't want to hassle him but since I had the Aurora and I had him, I had to ask, and we laughed about that and from then on we got on very good and I still don't hassle him at all about it. And flying over Tokyo Bay at night looks almost exactly like that NASA video except we're slowed way the heck down.
