Miss Marple the Deplorable

Tom R.,

Of an interest to ChiTown Lurker and me is how the ruble is collapsing and how the Iranian rial has collapsed to the point that when the head of the Iranian National Bank appeared before their parliament, there was a mini-riot with angry members shouting accusations at each other.

It seems to me that there are financial pressures being applied that the press is ignoring. Both countries have been hurt not only by sanctions but by American energy expansion.

I personally think that there is a lot of financial pressure being exerted out of the limelight. It is possible this will also happen in the US, although it would have to be done legally.

I think the finance people Trump brought on board (Mnuchin, Lighthizer, Ross) are much more important than people realize (including me, because I don't know beans about investments). It does seem to me that these guys have been way more successful than we have been led to believe.

One of the reasons I am patient is that I know that we only get one shot to clean this mess up, and telegraphing our actions gives too much warning to the bad guys. I do think many of the resignations and/or retirements in Congress are partially due to people being informed that the jig is up, go quietly or harsher measures will be taken.

That sex trafficking law gives the government more leverage with a certain group of these people. I think we will begin to see more arrests in the months ahead on that score, and I would guess some high-up people will get caught in that trap.

Old Lurker

Tom R

"Do you think Trump and his team are actively doing things to defeat those on the left who are in control and indeed evil?"

I THINK Trump is and SOME of his team are too.

"How exactly would someone go about defeating that evil?"

The best answer is what the pro said to my then 65 year old brother who decided to spend a solid week in golf camp. At the end, he asked the pro "what could I do to get better", to which the immediate reply was "Start younger".

"How long should it take?"

As you know, I worry that it will require longer than we have.

"Should Trump and his team be transparent about what they are doing or keep it under wraps?"

Aye, there's the rub, and the source of so much sniping back and forth here. Without a doubt much, probably most, of what he is doing has to be kept secret until he pulls the trigger. BUT, just as armies (hat tip to your previous life) run on their stomachs, political armies (since they can leave without being shot as deserters) run on regular encouragements that they are marching in the right direction and that victory will result.

Jane

Marlene,

I'm so sorry I haven't gotten back to you. Things have been crazy here. And sadly I can't do Sunday. I'm sorry.

Appalled

Porch:

The problem with blog conversation is that the original context inexorably gets lost, allowing misunderstanding to run riot.

Iggy believes that, in 2016, we were on Flight 93, and that we are still on Flight 93. I didn't believe that then, and still don't. My comment on Ryan was simply that he doesn't believe we are on Flight 93 either.

You ask -- how do you know? And I say, if he thought the country was going down, unless he acted to support Trump right now by staying as Speaker and vigorously supporting him, he wouldn't act the way he was acting. Not unless he was knowingly evil. Because -- to spell it out -- he would be knowingly acting to bring his own country down.

Your answer to that is, well he might be knowingly bringing Trump down. That wasn't ever my point. (Reasonable minds can disagree on whether that's evil or not, anyway). It's the USA I was talking about, not some temporary President.

Sometimes, being all blog wise, we make assumptions about normal human behavior, without precisely knowing the hearts and minds of people involved. Duh! Of course, this always invites the Bill Clintons and Pontius Pilates among us to pontificate about the unknowability of truth, the definition of is. But, to accept that Paul Ryan believes -- really believes -- the Flight 93 view of where America is, you have to believe he is no better than a traitor. Is that where you really are, Porch?

Jane

Miss Marple the Deplorable

Old Lurker,

The "encouragement that we are moving in the right direction" need is why I believe Trump does those appearances like he did in West Virginia last week. The tax cuts are something concrete which keeps people reminded of where we used to be financially; the jobs increases and bonuses paid out also remind people.

All of these things remind the voter that Trump kept that promise, so there is reason to believe he will keep others. And that is part of why I am patient - he MEANT it when he said "Honestly, she SHOULD be locked up."

Threadkiller

BTW, did anyone else notice that 1 day after it was reported that Trump and McCarthy were working on a rescission package to clean up the egregious Omnibus bill, ryan throws in the towel?

Miss Marple the Deplorable

Also, did anyone notice that 2 days ago the President signed an EO reversing all of the liberalization Obama did with Welfare?

I am amazed that hasn't caused more of a rant from the dem outrage machine.

Follow up to OL’s post on evil and my response. Reposting this tweet from Wretchard from yesterday.

https://twitter.com/wretchardthecat/status/984038129584693248?s=21

I think much of the world has been under the control of some form of evil for a long time now. Whether it be Globalist/Progressives like Soros, the ChiComms, Putin, ISIS/Al Qaeda, and to an extent the DC Uniparty Establishment. These forces of evil have acquired massive amount of wealth and power and sit firmly entrenched in control. Some are just more ruthless and vicious than others.

I believe what Wretchard is referring to with “something is afoot...” is that the forces of Good are starting to fight back and regain some power. The Powers That Be who have been controlling the world don’t know what to do about it yet.

I think the forces of Good have Trump and Crown Prince MBS of Saudi Arabia as their champions. This of course assumes MBS is being genuine with his promises of reforming Islamic society, giving Muslim women more civil liberties, ending the Islamic jihad against Israel and the infidels of the West, etc. The success of Trump’s MAGA agenda as well as MBS’s Islamic reforms come at the direct expense of the forces of evil around the world currently in power. Trump and MBS are already rich and powerful. They didn’t have to resort to acts of evil to acquire their power and wealth. They are in unique positions where they can engage in true acts of altruism to improve the quality of life and prosperity of their citizens. The forces of evil around the world have nothing they can do to counter that except violence. Their policies can never improve the quality oflife and prosperity for their citizens. It’s just they themselves who benefit with increased power and wealth.

Im going to reread that link narciso posted yesterday about religion and foreign policy. I think some of the points that writer made are playing out in full display right now with everything that is going on in the world. As Wretchard wrote something is indeed afoot and the forces of evil dont how to respond yet.

Porchlight

But, to accept that Paul Ryan believes -- really believes -- the Flight 93 view of where America is, you have to believe he is no better than a traitor. Is that where you really are, Porch?

Maybe.

If you accept that there is a slow-motion coup, part of which is takes the form of a GOPe plan to forfeit the midterms in hopes of neutering/removing Trump or at least making him un-re-electable, so that the Repubs can successfully run an establishment candidate in 2020 and get back to GOPe business...

...and you accept that maybe Ryan is on board with or at least not totally against this plan and maybe is even open to being that 2020 candidate...

...then Ryan could be part of all the above and still have believed that the nation would have been wrecked under Hillary (Flight 93).

He would just be one of those folks like Kristol who thinks they have a better plan to save the country.

Traitors usually do think they have a better plan. But a desire to remove the duly elected president is still traitorous no matter how allegedly high-minded the person deems it to be.

You don't know and I don't know.

MM "Here's some more of that reinforcement, Old Lurker."

I understand, MM. But reinforcement is like beauty....all in the eye of the beholder. Some beholders place more value on well delivered words than do others, and some beholders want to see actions; if those expected actions are taking longer than the beholder thought they should, then it behooves the leader to acknowledge that perception and explain why it was a misperception. Triangulating against his own DoJ and his own FBI works for some beholders but grates on others.

Cory Booker is running for president. He's an unmitigated ass.

Captain Hate

AFAIK Newt is the only fiscal conservative who actually tried to keep his Contract With America promise to reduce federal spending. All of his GOP peers who campaigned as fiscal conservatives showed they were actually like Mo Brooks is now. Their re-election chances improved the more successful they were at bringing home the pork. IMO that is one of the main reasons they turned against Newt. Newt stuck to his principals and they didn't so his own party got rid of him.

This is 100% in my wheelhouse. Noot was a major threat to the Uniparty and even I, in my naive youthfulness, noticed how nobody in the GOPe stepped up to the plate to defend him against a series of scam lawsuits. And a few talk radio squishes like Medved joined in the pile on.

It was an early heads up on what the ruling class will do against a threat.

Thomas Collins

Tell your consultant guy about my offer, Buckeye. But make it clear to him that if he brings his galpal, he needs to spend more money on me than her!

Old Lurker

The trouble, Gus, is you only have that opinion of Ryan because you know him personally. Those who don't have a different point of view. Porchlight

Gus, I'm typing/reading too slow, but consider my 1:41 a response to your 1:33 as well.

Old Lurker,

I think part of the dissatisfaction you have comes from the fact that you built a business being in charge. I have almost always had to defer to a husband's wishes, so I don't get upset when I don't know what's going on. (In hindsight, perhaps I should have run my life a bit differently.)

Anyway, I think part of this is a temperament thing. Stuff that gets you frustrated simply doesn't bother me.

I don't know that any discussion on this can really be productive, as people fall on one side or the other based on their backgrounds, and going back and forth on it doesn't really change anything.

I detect no sign of panic on the part of the President.

No, that's my point, Appalled. Confederacy, Union, doesn't matter. Booth believed he was doing something noble. Ending anchor babies
Republican Congressman Steve Scalise of Louisiana made his bid for House speaker now that Paul Ryan is punking out to become a millionaire lobbyist.

Scalise just proposed House Resolution 140, the Birthright Citizenship Act, which would enforce the constitutional provision that citizenship applies only to those who are "subject to the jurisdiction" of the United States.

Old Lurker

"I detect no sign of panic on the part of the President."

And you never will, not from that guy who came up through the rough and tumble NYC and elsewhere businesses he has run successfully in the past. Do not play poker with guys that good. No bank ever made a real estate loan to a borrower who did not exude the same, but some of those loans went bad nonetheless.

As to the productivity of these discussions, well I think there is value is knowing how one group sees things compared to how another group does, especially when they want the same thing and the movement needs both.

I do not care to understand why the other side - the left - thinks what they think because I just don't care; they are wrong and are being led by evil people. I don't care why the Devil hates God.

Porchlight

glasater, thanks for that link. Very good. I remember MarkO leaving us during the heated 2016 primary - or was it before? Seems like he wasn't a Trump fan.

OL, I'm not giving Paul Ryan a pass on being a poor Speaker, I'm merely saying there is NO EVIDENCE of him being evil. Ineffective in the major issues, but not evil. I differ with him, but I believe he is sincere. Schumer and Pelosi are not.
As for JANE and her support of people she's gotten to know on cruises. I keep my mouth shut about that. Porch, Paul Ryans actions or inactions, do not paint him as an evil or bad man. He is a Politician. You and I, and most posters here, don't like THE GAME of politics, we LOVE AMERICA and want the battle waged for AMERICA'S sake. Here in Wisconsin, at various levels, people have approached me about running for elected office. I couldn't play the game. I recognize peoples character quickly, and I could not abide lying phony hypcrite game players. I have been friends with Milwaukee's mayor for many many years, each year that goes by, he smells MORE and MORE SWAMPY. He has decided that POWER outweighs all else. I get political anger, for example ROCCO just posted FUCK RYAN. Ryan is leaving, and Ryan never screwed us on purpose.
I'm glad he's leaving, if he had been my dentist, I would have found a new one long ago.
He's a very good man, he's not a good Speaker.

Ryan couldn't even stand up to that buffoon Biden. There was no way the guy had the internal grit to do what any Speaker needs to do to be effective. Pelosi might be dumb as a box of rocks, but she was an effective Speaker when it came to protecting and advancing the interests of her Party, and that was because she not only was't afraid to play hardball, she relished it.

derwill

I think that at the crux of the differences of opinion that are constantly cropping up between the ledge and the verandah dwellers is that a lot of the narratives that we are being fed daily defy logic, and so we're all trying to make sense of things that are the surface have the feel and stink of a pie of hogwash. Thus optimists use 4D chess to try to explain what's going on and the pessimists believe that what we're seeing is proof that the bad guys are winning and we're all doomed.

Take just one of latest examples of things that make no sense on the surface: How believable is it that a NY lawyer of dubious character would use his own money to pay off a porn star to protect a client out of the goodness of his heart? My head tells me that he wouldn't, of course, so the truth has to be something else, but what?

I was talking to a friend about how so much of what seems to be going on just doesn't make sense and she said maybe the simple answer is that so much of what we're seeing is the result of stupid, but supremely egotistical, people doing or having done stupid stuff, and Stupid isn't going to make sense.

fdcol63 🇺🇸

Stupid is one thing. Yes, we've always seen stupid, and we can always expect it.

But what we're seeing today is different. This is very organized, very well funded, very deliberate and orchestrated malevolence and evil, by individuals and groups whose mission and goal it is to fundamentally destroy this country, Western culture, Judaeo-Christianity, and capitalism.

And in my darker moments, I actually DO believe that some of them even want to cull the human herd down to a "sustainable" and "manageable" level of no more than 500 Million people world-wide. So they are enacting policies and legislation, and fomenting wars, and creating conditions for famine and disease to do just that.

Porchlight

No, I wouldn't, henry, because Trump is willing to absolve blame (and most Americans wouldn't know the difference anyway) if the Uniparty would just cooperate to help undo the destruction.
