I hate to interrupt a fellow who is deriding Daniel Okrent of the NY Times, so I will keep it short. In the course of defending John Kerry, Brad DeLong says that "No one who is a social loner could ever get elected a United States senator".
Hmm. In addition to a brief stint in the Senate, he was a Congressman, Vice-President, and held Kerry's sought after position of President.
Nixon's the One!
UPDATE: Hmm. Evidently, not everyone remembers Nixon's biography. The above post has been subtly changed, striking the phrase "he was never in the Senate".
Nixon was elected to the Senate in 1950, but only served two years when he was elected Ike's VP.

He beat Helen Gahagen Douglas, Melvyn Douglas's wife, in a senate race offering as much choice as Bush-Kerry.

It is all coming back to me... the race against Helen Gahagen Douglas permanently endeared Nixon to the left, since they accused him of red-baiting forever after. Something about pink mailers, or some such.

Was Nixon truly a social loner, or is the idea of his being a social loner simply a result of people intensely disliking him? (Witness the wildly divergent portraits of GWB's personality).
