Michele Bachmann Speech at Church Could Cause Tax Troubles
Oct 15, 2006 -- 12:28 AM CDT
Andy Birkey

An event last night at Living Word Christian Center, a large suburban chuch in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, featuring Republican Congressional Candidate Michele Bachmann could cost the church its nonprofit tax status as the event appeared to endorse Bachmann for office. A personal endorsement from the pastor of the church, as well as Bachmann's own statements in her speech, appear to have violated regulations pertaining to partisan politicking by churches. Bachmann is in a tight race with Patty Wetterling, a race that's at the top of most election analysts lists in terms of importance and competitiveness.

[...]

Michelle Bachmann said:

"God then called me to run for the United States Congress, and I thought “What in the world will that be for?” and my husband said “You need to do this,” and I wasn’t so sure, and we took 3 days and we fasted and we prayed and we said, “Lord. Is this what you want? Is this your will?” and after long about the afternoon of day two, he made that calling sure. And its been now 22 months that I’ve been running for United States Congress. Who in their right mind would spend 2 years to run for a job that lasts 2 years? You’d have to be absolutely a fool to do that. You are now looking at a fool for Christ. This is a fool for Christ."

clarice

Ford just cut a campaign film in a church.
And every Dem candidate hits the Black inner city churches round the clock at election time.

Give it up, anonymous.

anonymous

If you will excuse me ... it may take a few minutes to expunge the mental image of Mother Feldman in pantyhose and high heels.

anonymous

It's not for me to "give it up" ... I didn't write the I.R.S. regulations. You are probably not familiar with the church in Pasadena, California being investigated now for alleged violations.

So, tell the T-Men.

Rick

This thread is getting long & OBE. Time for anonymous to shift to the newest thread (on Sen. Reid's financial acumen) so he can continue to preach to we heathen about D. saintliness and purity, in sad contrast etc. etc.

Cordially...

Sara (Squiggler)

Terrye: I hope you don't mind that I've purloined your comments HERE

Extraneus

Perhaps it's unkind to lol at this.

anonymous

I understand that Reading Comprehension is not a very common skill among the inmates here; but, if you read the recent comments again (sound out the big words) you might see that I said nothing about Democrats at all. The only comments about Democrats came from your merry little CREW.

jwest

Clarice,

Some seek greatness, others have greatness thrust upon them.

If it takes a little nip & tuck along with the dreaded pantyhose, it’s still a small price to pay for having someone who knows what they are talking about on the air.

Sara (Squiggler)

First of all, Baker has said that the leaked material was part of a preliminary draft that included views from several sources. This is a case of selective leaking and will bear little resemblance to the final product not due out until after the elections. Does anyone really think that Jim Baker would sabotage the President? If you do, you really are nuts. Get a grip. Leaks are nothing but those who have no good ideas and need to get their headlines when they can.

anonymous

Mr. Baker's job, of course, is to save what's left of this administration, not to sabotage it.

clarice

HEH!

Sara (Squiggler)

I need someone very good with Photoshop to do a graphic for me. If you have Photoshop, could you send me an email and I'll describe what I want.

Rick

Anon is equally oblivious (must be the big words/s'OK to move your lips; no one can see on the intertubes) to the point that his own list amply demonstrates that sleaziness ends pubbie political careers, but my quick recounting shows it boosts the Dems.

Still crickets I hear. Guess there's more noise on the Reid thread.

Cordially...

SunnyDay

anonymous,

thank you so much for explaining.

ed

Hmmmm.

@ Sara

Because Republicans have class and don't move in circles where integrity has no meaning and people knife each other in the back to get ahead all the time.

Is this a joke?

Sara (Squiggler)

I know Jim Baker personally. I have worked with him during the Bush 41 administration. I will say categorically that there is NO WAY he would try to sabotage George W. Bush right before an election or any time. If he has problems with anything, he'd do it the right way, not through leaks to a newspaper. This is a dem shill on the commission. Get a grip!

Sara (Squiggler)

No Ed.

Sara (Squiggler)

Clarice, I'm with you on the heels and pantyhose thing. I have no interest in being in the limelight. I was asked to go on Hannity back during the Swift Boat days to talk about our family's experiences after Kerry's testimony before Congress and I couldn't run fast enough. The idea scares me to death. All I could think of was my Grandmother saying a lady only gets her name in the paper when she marries or dies.

anonymous

Rick, do you need a laptop battery to explode on your knees to focus your attention?

Can you really not come up with a reason why I might not be bothering to defend Democrat politicians, past or present?

Pense, porc.

Cecil Turner

Can you really not come up with a reason why I might not be bothering to defend Democrat politicians, past or present?

Considering a finite amount of energy and complete lack of interest in your opinion, it's a bit more difficult than it might otherwise appear.

Well, I'm sure it's nap time for you Seniors. Don't forget to set your alarms though. You don't want to be late for the Early Bird Specials.

anonymous

What's your point?

Do you think we are all Democrats considering voting for Republicans?

Or do you think we are Republicans who will change our votes because of what you post?

Truth be told, I'm glad you're here. Otherwise you'd be dropping your little gems on a blog where it might make a difference.

Like KOS.

Any other questions? Cause harry reid keeps coming to mind.

If it's between reading another vapid pseudonymous generic ad hominem or a nap, I'll take the nap. (Too bad we can't engineer some sort of warning label.)

Otherwise you'd be dropping your little gems on a blog where it might make a difference.

Oh but they do. I'm not sure how many percentage points media coverage is worth for the Dems, but it's certainly outweighed amongst blog readers by the mindless nastiness of the nutroots (even when they don't convince unelectable idiots to challenge an otherwise safe seat and throw it to the independents).

anonymous

Again, folks, I just do what I get paid to do. It's nothing personal.

If you don't like me disrupting every conversation on this blog with my bullshit spam, make me an offer that tops the amounts I get from Soros and Fenton.

Sara (Squiggler)

If you will swap sides for your argument anonymous, I'll make you a guest author and give you your own forum. You'll forgive me though if I hold all posts for review before posting, since I'm not sure someone who can be bought off is very trustworthy.

Charlie (Colorado)

WASHINGTON — A commission formed to assess the Iraq war and recommend a new course has ruled out the prospect of victory for America, according to draft policy options shared with The New York Sun by commission officials.

And that would be the report that the committee chair was just saying was wrong because they haven't actually even drafted their final report?

(Here's a hint, poopsie: whenEVER you get a leak like that, assume the leakee is pushing a draft that isn't popular to a reporter who is either agreeable or at least credulous.)

Meanwhile in other news, historians have discovered proof that Truman could fortell the future.

Your link did not work.

I have to admit having bad thoughts about Baker, but I don't know the man and I just remember that he was supposedly one of the people who suggested Bush1 not go after Saddam. But this is what I read in some freaking newspaper so you know what that is worth. Do I think that someone would put out a politically motivated and inaccurate leak weeks before an election? yes ma'am I do.

I remember when I was farming I would read something someone wrote about agriculture and I would think "If these guys are as stupid about everything they report on as they are about this, then why bother paying any attention to them?"

I still feel a lot the same way.

If I really cared about this blog or convincing anyone that I was right, don't you think I'd actually engage in a discussion using actual facts and arguments rather than spouting off insults, Townhouse talking points, and MSM smear articles that are long on assertions and anonymous sources but short on credibility?

I'll even have it with myself when I can get round to it.

anonymous

Of course, no one in his right mind would care about this or any other blog, let alone bother about trying to convince people who would torture themselves before they'd change their minds.

And yes, I have responded to insults with insults. Why don't you have SCREW report it to the F.B.I.? That'll teach me.

Terrye

I defended Bill Clinton when that whole thing with Monica started. I really did. I still do not think he should have been impeached, a censure would have been enough. That impeachment has made it just that much more difficult for Bush to govern. The impeachment together with the close election in 2000 just made some people on the left go over the deep end.

But even though I did not want to see Clinton impeached, I don't respect him. When I think of him in the Oval Office with his pants down around his ankles and Monica in her blue dress on her knees, it makes me feel disgusted. More and more that is the way I feel about the Democratic party on the national level. Disgusted. I do not like these people.

Here in Indiana they ran a Sheriff named Ellsworth against the Republican Hostettler. He may win. He is a social and fiscal conservative. He is enforcement only on immigration. He does not support running away from Iraq although he is critical of the war. And he has done everything he can to distance himself from people like Pelosi. No doubt the nutroots would hate him. But this is the only kind of Democrat that can win around here.

So maybe a little less condescending and snarkiness from some of the visiting trolls is in order, because to win you need to be a little bit appealing and people like anonymous and TCO are anything but.

anonymous

If I was interested in winning something, I might consider your advice, "Terrye."

Since I'm not, I won't.

Rick Ballard

I've got 9 years active, 9 reserves, and tried getting back into AD after 9-11. I'm not that worried about the pink crap. I vote rethug like most manly men. I know that in their hearts of hearts, the democrats want to bend over and poop VietNam craps on soldier's heads. But I know that the American public won't let them and that we will continue to have the best forces in the world bar none and that we will use them in an expiditionary manner at times (as we did under Monica-man). So even if their hearts are not in it, it doesn't matter in the long run, if there is some wimp like that in charge. (Except for Jimmy Carter during the Cold War.)

You can't scare me with the boogie-man. Get over your inside the Beltway fascination with which team has the bigger offices. It just doesn't matter who gets to feel like "they won" on Wednesday in November.

I don't want to deal with these guys giving away the border and pharma drug stuff. I honestly feel that we would be better served with an obstructionist minority then with the accomodating majority. I can live with my football team losing on November Tuesday.

I don't know what you are talking about. I say "folks" because I am one of those rubes, hicks, hay seeds, from the red states. I am not sophisticated like you. All citified.

I don't watch O'Reilley. I have never listened to an entire Rush Limbaugh program. I don't like Hannity. I was a Democrat for most of my life so it seems you were part of the same party as me. Keep it up buddy, you are doing a great job of making me want to come back.

BTW, I was also an anti war demonstrator when I was about 17 years old, back in the day. I also worked for a nonprofit citizens group with a very liberal agenda for years. And I joined the National Family Farm Coalition back in the 80s.

Maybe you are so one dimensional that you think Republicans are a different species, but they are Americans too and they deserve to be treated with some respect.
