--Taxes scare fatcat pigs--

um...OK

A familiar paradox about leftist celebrities in the entertainment industry is that their embrace of progressivism almost never includes a wholehearted embrace of progressive taxation, i.e., the principle that the richer you get, the larger the percentage of your income you ought to pay in taxes. The latest example is U2's Bono, a committed and unusually sophisticated anti-poverty crusader who is taking surprisingly little heat for the decision by his band, U2, to relocate its music-publishing business from Ireland to the Netherlands in order to shelter its songwriting royalties from taxation.

The irony was stated in admirably stark terms by Bloomberg's Fergal O'Brien, who reported on Oct. 16:

Bono, the rock star and campaigner against Third World debt, is asking the Irish government to contribute more to Africa. At the same time, he's reducing tax payments that could help fund that aid.

Cecil Turner

especially not those of us being asked to sacrifice our own flesh and blood

Is this a claim of personal sacrifice? If not, what moral authority do you have to make the "chickenhawk" argument? Because I suspect most in uniform don't share your viewpoint.

And the bit I'd have pulled out of that exit poll is this:

HAVE YOU EVER SERVED IN THE MILITARY?
BUSH KERRY
Yes (18%) 57% 41%
No (82%) 49% 50%
If the Dems could just keep those darn servicemen and vets from voting . . .

Bob

Sorry lindy, I had to go out to Stables and see if my Polo Ponies were getting their shoes shined and manicures. My you really have to watch those undocumented ones!

Or are you all Brits, like Peter, with no heritage or investment in this country?

Boy it sounds like Kerry is writing your talking points.

You just keep believing the polls, just like those exit polls in 2004, and it'll be you jumping off the clif my dear!

Do you honestly think you can scare the average middle class American, who can't pay tuition, health insurance or credit card interest, whose overmortgaged house now has a net negative value - with your boogeyman of taxes?

Once again... right out of the Kerry playbook... you think Americans are just too stupid to understand that higher taxes hurt them.

Oh and overmortgage is not a word and bogeyman is spelled wrong... I guess your dumb enough for Kerry's Troops!

PeterUK

"Get real. Or are you all Brits, like Peter, with no heritage or investment in this country? This is all just a game to him, but the rest of you too? Sure sounds like it from your glib ramblings and smug self congratulation".

Not a game at all "abcd",seems familiar that,we are at a nexus in history which will determine the course of the rest of the century, this is a time which is as dangerous as the Cuban missile crisis, but with far greater ramifications.
America, as the most powerful representative of Western culture can not fail,or be seen to fail simply because domestic politics is being used unscrupulously to undermine foreign policy.
This is the big one Lindy(abcd),either you win this one,or you begin the long surrender across the decades.
Strange how the party of John F.Kennedy is eager to run up the white flag to those you have vanquished, run from commitments all over the globe,I guess they just don't make Democrats like they used to.
Understand one thing,America's problems are Western civilisations problems, unlike the Vietnamese, the Jihad won't stay in its paddy fields,it knows where you live,it has followed you home, the options on offer are victory, submission, slavery or death. Is John Kerry really worth any or the last three?

Enlightened

Well, another cut and run lefty. I just read TM's newest post, and I can bet where Lindy gets her fake but accurate facts! Kate Zernike! How did we miss that one? Was it too nuanced for us?

Ppfffppt.

JM Hanes

Lindy:

"But, as a patriot, I am going to have a little faith in my fellow citizens. And don't expect to be disappointed for once."

So your faith in the American people depends on which way the political wind is blowing, eh? Typical. I can tell you this, if Dems win at the polls next week, I won't be trashing my fellow citizens as idiots and dupes the way Dems do when they lose. I'll be blaming Republicans & Republican leadership

Hey all you "fat cat pigs" here, do you remember the days when you were young and stupid and broke and foolish just like Lindy? Does she suffer from Peter Pan syndrome? All "fat cat pigs" started somewhere -- some like John Kerry become gigolos and marry money made by the dead spouses of their present sugar mommas, others inherit it from the prohibition rum running efforts of their grandfathers and some actually make it through hard work and thriftiness.

Isn't that strange? They hate Limbaugh more than they hate any foreign enemy, but he's funnier than any lib there is. Actually, so is TM.

I've always marveled in particular at how lame their political cartoons are. Can anyone link to an actually funny one?

heh heh lindy, you're in good company... bin Laden whined about credit card interest too in his first communique after 9/11. It's right there in the Koran, 3rd chapter - those who charge usury will be smited, or damned, or should be killed, or something. His AMEX bill must have pissed him off. Kinda pisses me off too sometimes... but never occurred to me to fly a plane into a building over it. er... or have some underling fly a plane into a building over it with the promise of grapes.

Bob

Sara, I'm convinced people like lindy suffer from the inability to think critically. They are so enamoured with their world view, that even the thought that they may be wrong overwhelms them. They really believe that everyone is born with a good heart and is compassionate, and therefore the thought that there are actually people like the terrorist is unfathomable. I mean it's a worthy ideal, but it just isn't reality.

I promise you that if you double poor lindy's income, she'd be back in 3 months complaining she needs more. Her Momma never told her how it works... or maybe she lied to her too!

Webb Plagiarism Update [Ramesh Ponnuru]

Robert Harris, the author of The Plagiarism Handbook, has reviewed the Webb novel and the Bergamini book and writes in:

"A review of the excerpts clearly reveals that The Emperor's General contains a number of instances of significant plagiarism from Japan's Imperial Conspiracy. Even if the plagiarism was unintentional and merely the result of sloppy writing practice, the extended passages of verbatim and near verbatim copying reveal such a substantial reliance on Mr. Bergamini's book that it should have been acknowledged, even in a novel and even if the passages had been paraphrased."

Jane Hamsher...

...Ben Domenech resigned, effective immediately, from the Washington Post. ...

...Sucks when your right wing compadres decide that your plagiarism baggage is too ugly, too immoral, too much of a hot potato for even their political brand, doesn’t it?

***Let alone the fact that your ethically challenged behavior is abhorrent to anyone who writes for a living, regardless of their political stripes.****

I hope that neither blogger (Malkin, Moran) minds my pulling an extended excerpt, but they are both, in this instance, absolutely correct — and it is to their credit that they say this publicly. Especially given the climate of "you’re either with us or against us" that tends to prevail in conservative blogging circles — standing on principle in this case is to be applauded. (Okay, sure, there’s a whole lot of protecting the conservative brand from the lying plagiarist going on here — but we’re big enough to say "good on ya" for at least stating the truth that being a lying plagiarist is a bad thing — the fact that’s he’s a conservative lying plagiarist, notwithstanding.)

For a writer, the biggest sin is to steal from someone else. To do so without attribution is just plain wrong. To have done so once or twice — especially given Box Turtle Ben’s tender age, might have been understandable. But to do so repeatedly — while writing for the college newspaper, for National Review, on Red State and on his own website…well, in my prosecutorial days we would call that a distinct pattern of behavior. The words lazy, stealing and ethically challenged spring to mind, for starters...

And Hamsher is just one of the many shrill jihad left bloggers that tarred Ben! Who is not running for office.

Typical
Dem pattern again...scream bloody murder if a republican...reward and elevate if Democrat.

"I particularly love these reserve troops because they destroyed in one quick bit of wit the most revolting poseur in a crowded field."

Ridicule is the ultimate coup de grace, isn't it?

Sara (Squiggler)

Hey, I have an idea, why don't you all start a writing campaign to every democrat on the list and tell them about this poor poster friend of yours who desperately needs an infusion of cash to save her house. I think I'd make a great cause for some lame dem. and what's $15,000 when you have multiple multiple multiple millions. Let's see if there really are dems. who care. I'll bet 10% of anything raised as a prize. I won't hold my breath though. I don't think a dem. has an ounce of legitimate charity in them.

Sara (Squiggler)

I know that Peter. If you want to fly bad enough, you take what the Air Force offers because that is what they need at the time. They don't train up unnecessary pilots. But, the kids today do not understand the "cold war" and the dangers we all lived under.

Jane

"Get real. Or are you all Brits, like Peter

Today we are all Brits!

Larry

Sara, it's about 1 1/2 years. Your point's still valid though. Flying is inherently dangerous. Flying fighters is exponentially more dangerous. Flying the 102, a notorious widow-maker, is exponentially more. Flying 102's in combat, etc. Pilots in Bush's unit flew in combat. He volunteered, but was not selected. Kerry has admitted he thought the riverboat duty would be a relatively safe way to get his combat hole punched.

Enlightened

"Ridicule is the ultimate coup de grace, isn't it?"

Exactly - Memory Lane: Zarqawi and his gun (mis)handling talents - the ridiculous sight of him, and OTOH being a ferocious terrorist - basically ended him.

I have said before I think this tactic produces much better results. As soon as the troops just decimated Kerry in spectacular fashion, he slithered back into his cave (not to be seen since) and offered up his "oops sorry I can't remember when I'm joking". Not as definitive as Zarqawi's demise, but nevertheless, Kerry will not be able to show his face around real troops any time soon, and expect an avid audience.

And - Angelides, the loser Kerry was stumping for? He thinks the war is shameful and PHONY. So, we do NOT have troops over in Iraq? The whole thing is a wag-the-dog? Or did he just MISSPEAK? We missed his "nuances" too? So, if I wanted to try and understand LeftSpeak, all I need to do is project what I THINK they MEANT?

Cecil Turner

The F-102 Delta Dart interceptor was designed to counter the Tu-95 Russian Bear nuclear bomber.

This is true, but they were in limited action in Vietnam as part of the "Palace Alert" program when GWB signed up. By the time he was trained, the F-102 was being removed from front-line service (Palace Alert ended in 1970, having demonstrated its glaring deficiencies), was in the process of being retired ("Large-scale retirement of the F-102A from the ANG began in late 1969"), and the program to convert them to target drones began in 1973 (which even the densest fighter pilot will usually recognize as a hint).

Larry

Active duty pilots are assigned their aircraft type by their choice of what's available at the time in graduating order of their pilot training class. Guard and Reserve pilots know the type they'll fly because they know what the unit they sign up with is flying.

JM Hanes

Enlightened:

Interesting that in two of the most high profile campaigns where the issue of Iraq is clearly in play, opposition candidates like Angelides and Lamont are getting absolutely trounced.

Sara (Squiggler)

Angeliddes has been running on a platform of anti-war, raise taxes, and gay marriage. If you can't make it in California on those issues, you can't make it anywhere, IMHO. Well, maybe in Mass. but even they had the good sense to elect Romney.

PeterUK

From Cecil's link,sounds a real peach of a plane.

"According to the Air Force Safety Center, the lifetime Class A accident rate for the F-102 was 13.69 mishaps per 100,000 flight hours, and the rate was especially high during the early years of the plane's service.

This poor safety record may have been due in part to a deadly flaw in the aircraft's design that caused an engine stall and loss of control under a certain combination of angle of attack and airspeed frequently encountered during takeoff. According to a former F-102 pilot we've interviewed, this problem caused the plane to roll inverted and resulted in several fatal crashes. Numerous accidents were also encountered during landing because of the plane's high angle of attack and airspeed that reduced the pilot's visibility and reaction time".

Larry

The 102 was, if not the first, one of the earliest to employ swept and/or delta wing technology. The scientists and engineers trial and errored it and erred grossly. The 106 replaced it and was much improved. I have several friends who flew the 106 and loved it.

Sara (Squiggler)

Five Myths About the War on Terror Not everything you hear is true

Larry

Geeze, Larry, not and/or. The 102 was the first operational delta wing. Several swept wing preceded the delta, the highly effective F-86 among 'em. Did I tell y'all I'm an old fighter pilot? And I was in Vietnam? LMAO.

PeterUK

The main point is,George Bush didn't fly his F-102 into the riverbank, but John Kerry ran his Swift Boat aground.

For those waiting with bated breath for news of the kidnapped soldier

At the risk of sounding Jon Carryish - (He was stumping for Angelides at Pasadena Community College.)

Pasadena, CA is hugely Democratic.

Predominantly white (almost half) followed by latino/hispanic/other/black/asian

The median income is higher than the national average.
The median income for whites is almost double that for other ethnicities.

Age range highest at 25-44 and 45-64

High School/College age is roughly 16,000 people
High School Diplomas - way under national average (13.4%)
College - Closer to national average
BA Degree - better than national average
MA Degree - better than national average

So, an older, white population, middle class, with college degrees is the main demographic - but that was not to whom Carry was speaking.

He was at a community college. Therefore more minorities. Less "better" educated if the HS diploma figures are correct at almost half the national average. So lots of dropouts in Pasadena?

And his handlers thought that was the appropriate forum to joke about Good Education, Study Hard, don't be
Intellectually Lazy or you will be like President Bush and get us stuck in Iraq?

Sara (Squiggler)

So Larry, as an "old fighter pilot" was GWB a coward to pilot the 102 or not? The Dems say he was a draft dodging coward, what is your assessment?

Sara (Squiggler)

I know for a fact that the DOJ is monitoring our Libby threads and the complaints against Fitz via Clarice's letter.

Larry

Sara, from my comment above, I think you can tell it takes a certain amount of nerve to strap a 102 on. I credit him for going after the assignment, whether or not he got it through political influence. To all but the reality based community, actively pursuing a dangerous assignment like that is the exact antithessis of cowardice.

One more thing, then (maybe) I'll drop the fighter pilot thang. I used to watch the old, Buchanan/Kinsley Crossfire. A lady lawyer (Heck, it might have been Clarice?) on one night caught fighter pilot attitude as closely as a civilian ever will. Discussing the Tailhook scandal, she said something like, "Why would any of us expect fighter pilots to follow written laws? They don't even think the laws of physics apply to them."

Sara (Squiggler)

I figured that would be your answer, Larry. Just wanted to see it in black and white. (smile)

It sounds like it could be related to the NYT story. NYT jumping the shark to get their story in front of the real story?

MAF is pretty reliable, I think something might be afoot.

I thought Move America Forward was formed to counter moveon.org

How interesting, Sara.

Sara (Squiggler)

MAF is not going to be dropping any bombs that will hurt Repubs. just before an election. Iran just fired off a whole bunch of missiles, could it be something to do with them? Or, lot of activity re: Syria with some top people being seen going over there for something hush hush.

Sara (Squiggler)

Maybe someone else will recall seeing something. I didn't pay that much attention because I was looking for Kerry links right after the story broke. I was only scanning my feed reader excerpts. It had something to do with someone noticing several major political players converging at the same time somewhere. Now how is that for a sketchy memory process?
I am not even sure if the "players" were all American. It was a prediction of something big in the wind, IIRC.

"SOURCES: NYT: U.S. POSTING OF IRAQ NUKE DOCS ON WEB COULD HAVE HELPED IRAN...

Federal government set up Web site -- Operation Iraqi Freedom Document Portal -- to make public a vast archive of Iraqi documents captured during the war; detailed accounts of Iraq's secret nuclear research; a 'basic guide to building an atom bomb'... Officials of the International Atomic Energy Agency fear the information could help Iran develop nuclear arms... contain charts, diagrams, equations and lengthy narratives about bomb building that the nuclear experts say go beyond what is available elsewhere on the Internet and in other public forums.... Developing... "(Drudge)

Wonder if they'll mention that under Clinton the CIA had a cut out give Iran the blueprints of a nuke generator with one thing wrong hoping it'd throw them off and the cut out noticed the doctoring and told them..So we gave them the plans.

Sara (Squiggler)

I found it. Go there to get all the working links.

They say for talks about Gaza gun smuggling. It's just a FEELING, but I think this is cover for something much bigger. WHY?! Because they can talk about Gaza gun smuggling on the phone. And then there's this item: Blair sent a biggie to Damascus this week - some say in an effort to head-off a US offensive - or get them to play ball in Iraq.

I think both efforts signal that the US is preparing to make big move against Assad - one that will pick up steam right after the election. This move will coincide with a tribunal on the Hariri assasination and a report on Syria's efforts along with Hizballah to overthrow the democratic government in Lebanon. BOTTOM-LINE: One way or another, things in Damascus are gonna heat up pretty dang soon. And then Hizballah and Iran will be ISOLATED. Stay tuned...

**Correction)CIA gave Iran plans for a nuclear bomb, (not a generator)This is from an LA Times article dated Jan 4, 2006 which I can no longer access..Will keep googling to see if someone else has the whole article.

clarice

Here's the article..the gift to Iran was in 2000 and the man who reported this was the NYT's own Risen.

Wow, this election cycle's NYT Iraq nuke disclosure is as interesting as 2004.

2004 Election Eve disclosure: Saddam was not pursuing nukes, but nuclear material had been stolen from Iraq storage facilities due to military/Bush incompetence.

2006 Election Eve disclosure: Saddam was not pursuing nukes, but his papers discussing how to build a nuke may have helped Iran. This is due to Pentagon/Bush incompetence.
Please note: Iran is not necessarily pursuing nukes.

Sara (Squiggler)

If Reliapundit is on to something and the Drudge report article is on to something re: NYT, and the translated Saddam documents play a part, maybe we have found Saddam's nuke stash he had secreted somewhere. The newly translated docs are pretty explicit about getting these things hidden and who was responsible.

MayBee

Sara- That is interesting about DOJ.

About Syria- didn't we just yesterday say we suspect Iran and Syria are planning/hoping to topple the Lebanese government?

It's no longer available there but was reprinted here.

Good comment from Ace's..

37 According to Drudge we put up documents found in Iraq that might help build a nuke.

Ummm, that's going to ruin a lot of story lines. Of course the MSM will spin this that, 'so he had drawings, he didn't have any Uranium, just ask Joe Wilson'.

Of course normal people will say, 'but I thought Saddam wasn't working on nukes? I guess no matter what's happened in the last 3 years Iraq was worth it'.

I wonder what else we haven't translated yet.

I don't get Ace's joke--the article says docs about IRAQ's nuke program helped IRAN.

Sara (Squiggler)

Iran has/had A.Q. Khan, why would they need Saddam's documents to know how to build a nuke? That doesn't make any sense. Saddam got much of his know-how from the Khan network in the first place. At least that is how I understand it.

boris

Iraq must have been rather closer to a nuke than the MSM has admitted. More of an "imminent" threat.

Baradei and NYT work together again for another last minute election surprise:

Sara (Squiggler)

This is totally OT, but it is such a hot pic and we were talking about pilots.

SunnyDay

So, why don't they want those documents translated?

MayBee

No, of course Iraq wasn't working on a nuclear program and had no intention of ever doing so.

That being said, the nuclear and dual-use equipment stolen from Iraq and the nuclear plans found in Iraq most certainly will help others build nukes.

Bush was wrong to take Saddam out of power, because he had all this stuff under his control with no intention of ever using it.

It is all so simple I can't understand how anyone votes Republican anymore. Especially since Republicans are always trying to scare voters with threats of a nuclear Iran.

SunnyDay

Off my meds - NYT's does not want communications monitored, money traced, and now, they don't want these documents translated.

Sara (Squiggler)

None of this makes sense. I thought I was following these document releases pretty closely. I know Ed Morrissey at Captain's Quarters is and so is Robertson and Fox has a section devoted to these releases. I don't recall any like are being described. That's not to say they weren't there, but it seems strange no one in the blogosphere picked up on it. Isn't it? ?????????
