As I pen this at 8 PM, Mets fans at Shea are watching their own team lose 3-0 after three innings and the scoreboard has worse news - the Phillies are winning 6-0 after three.
As a Yankees fan I am naturally pulling for Mets manager Willie Randolph but my goodness - this Mets collapse is an epic debacle. C'mon, Willie - saddle up that Comeback Pony and ride!
UPDATE: Brr. Mets lose, Phillies win, and the two teams are tied up with three games to settle it.
I feel bad for Willie -- b/c '77 is the first season I remember, and it made me a Yankee fan, and Willie was my favorite player -- and even for some of the Mets players, but as for their obnoxious fans . . . karma's a bitch.
Yankee fans took a lot of sh*t earlier this season from Mets' fans. I warned them that it was May and all, but would they listen?
It would be sweet if they blew it, almost as sweet as Boston getting swept out of the playoffs in the first round.

I did mention those chilly Easterners, didn't I?
In fairness to the Mets (to whom I'd ordinarily refer as "pond scum"), they did lose to the World Champions.
All the Cardinals have left to play for is pride. What would the Mets know about that motivation?

Say it, Walter. I've still got my "Mets are pond scum" t-shirt. OTOH, given my choice between the Mets and the Braves, I'd prefer the Braves stayed home more often. Since it's the Phillies, I'm more torn. The Phillies fans are the anti-Cardinal fans.
Also, I have a dear colleague who is a *BIG* Mets fan, and I feel for him. Since it's a Sukkot, I've the feeling he can't even be following the games.
Finally, it looks like the Cubs will back in, so I'll have to put up with my brother-in-law gloating. (Which may be only fair, considering I've had gloating rights for most of the past 20 years.) I'll just gag if it turns out I have to say "World Champion Cubs".

Hi Tom -longtime Phillies fan, first time internet commenter.
As God as my witness I know Charlie Manuel is going to do something stupid which will cost us the Pennant and/or the Wild Card.
My hunch is that he'll be halfway through a triple switch and forget to put a fielder out there, leaving the Phils with two outfielder. Or Charlie might use a pitcher out of the bullpen.
I don't know.
But, for the sake of my two young sons, I'm going to act as if the Phils have a shot to win the division. Which may involve drinking a lot during the game. So it's a win-win.
Posted by: BumperStickerist | September 28, 2007 at 07:10 AM
As a long time Braves fan (a rather small group in Atlanta), all I can say is that the only advantage to the Phillies winning the division is that the Mets don't. That does work the other way, too.
To put it in terms this blog's denizens understand, think of it as a trial where Fitzgerald is prosecuting Nifong.

The nights are getting chillier in Tora Bora again. AT has a nice article wondering if al-Qaeda has been turned on in the borderlands in a fashion similar to the Anbar Awakening. C and I wondered several months ago if something like that might be behind the mishigas over there.

Kim,
Maybe we should turn the coin over? Allowing the Afghan opium/warlords to continue as custom dictated worked so well that it was tried in Anbar?
The Afghans have as little use for Taleban Puritans as the Sunnis have for Wahabbi Puritans. They're all bad for business.

Yes, thank goodness. By the way, what will Bush say about carbon and Kyoto, today? Ooh, I hope he is up-to-date.

The article also strongly suggests a schism between al-Qaeda and the Taliban.

It's a debacle. But it's not like the Mets are blowing a 3-0 lead in the Championship Series, like some other team I've heard of.

A chilly night at Shea? Isnt that a segue into a global warming post? How about this tidbit on Al Gore's sudden reticence:
Gore's reluctance to go toe-to-toe with global warming skeptics may have something to do with the - from the standpoint of climate change alarmists - unfortunate outcome of a global warming debate in New York last March. In the debate, a team of global warming skeptics composed of MIT scientist Richard Lindzen, University of London emeritus professor of biogeology Philip Stott, and physician-turned novelist/filmmaker Michael Crichton handily defeated a team of climate alarmists headed by NASA scientist Gavin Schmidt. Before the start of the nearly two-hour debate, the audience of several thousand polled 57.3 percent to 29.9 percent in favor of the proposition that global warming is a "crisis." At the end of the debate, the numbers had changed dramatically, with 46.2 percent favoring the skeptical point of view and 42.2 percent siding with the alarmists.

Easier than that. perfect analogy as a long time Spartan is:
Only way I win win Michigan and Notre Dame play football, is if they both lose. Nailed it.

Well, Bush declined both skepticism and coercion.

Well, a team that's relying on a rotation of John Maine and three 65 year olds is asking for trouble.
There's only so much HGH one can pump into those bodies.

No, Tom, that was in 1964, here in Philadelphia. As a life long, long suffering Phillies fan, all I can say is -- Bumperstickerist, I got the next round, and they're doubles.

Kim,
The President successfully kicked the can beyond the end of his term. The reason that I won't fault him for it is that I still have my fingers crossed concerning a week long storm of very hard rain falling on Iran in the near future.
The AGW giggle is coming apart but the Axis of Evil still has at least 1 1/2 wheels. The silence over the Israeli strike on Syria is absolutely deafening.
One might wonder whether there was commando involvement and what the fellas might have taken as souvenirs.

I guess I should say what else could he say. In another year and a half, the evidence for cooling will be even stronger, and the tide of anthropogenic advocacy ebbing. Thanks Gmax for the info on the debate. That is impressive.

Posted by: anduril | September 29, 2007 at 08:32 AM
So, right after I say the Mets couldn't rely on Maine any longer (too many IPs) he goes out and pitches a one-hitter with 14 Ks.
Prescient aren't I?

cathyf, the Cards have had bragging rights since around the middle '20s for sure, and I've been a Cards fan since the bad old days of the early '50s but my brother in law is only 20, and I've only been gloating on him for about a dozen years, when he got old enough for it to hurt. ;->=
Actually, except for being a Cubs fan (he should be a Sox fan, as his parents are East Siders), he's a pretty good egg. (I do hate the possibility of having to spend a year saying "World Series Champion Cubs" although I think it's a pretty remote chance.)
And I was allowed to stop mowing the lawn on the Sunday in 1964 to listen to the Cards win the pennant after being 6 behind the Phillies with 12 games to go. That's a great memory for me, if not for Philly fans.

Please predict the demise of the Mets, or their eventual loss in the World Series.
