Amazing that the inept Harry Reid could go up on the skyline on this one, deploy Tom Harkin who has his own service issues, and couldnt even get all his dems to sign on. And no resolution which would have required a vote. And finally, hardly any media coverage---but this kind of stuff does energize the republican base. (of course, this stunt could have been done to mask Senate passage of the defense appropriation with only 3 no votes--perhaps to take move-ons eye off the ball)

And though I don't usually sign these internet petition thingies, I did sign this one. It is more than standing with Rush. I want to stand AGAINST MoveOn.org, VoteVets.org, Soros, the Clintons, and all the rest of the smear merchants.

Quote from Rep. Cantor at Red State:

"This issue is bigger than you or me, it is bigger than Rush Limbaugh. With the recent liberal effort to resurrect the "fairness doctrine," we have to recognize that free speech -- specifically, conservative free speech is under direct attack. These are issues that speak directly to the core of the modern conservative movement – are we going to allow ourselves to be pushed around by liberal extremists, or are we going to fight back?"

I hope some of you will also sign the petition.

Tom Delay sees the Hillary Hand behind this:

Because she can’t hide her viciousness behind a mask of lip-biting insincerity, Hillary instead has erected a massive network of battle hardened operatives to do the “red in tooth and claw” bit for her. The effect is the same – suppress dissent, intimidate detractors, discredit opponents, and enforce, with fascistic efficiency, an iron code of loyalty among friends and docility among foes. It’s really quite something.

....This recent attack against Rush Limbaugh is nothing more than a fire drill for Mrs. Clinton’s “new progressive infrastructure,” a preparation for the real quarry: the 2008 Republican presidential nominee. There is nothing independent, nonpartisan, or disinterested about Media Matters and the rest of the Clinton Shadow Party – they are the tanks and bombers and battleships of Hillary’s campaign arsenal. They will do whatever they are asked, whenever they must, to destroy anyone who stands between her and the Oval Office.

Republicans used to be considered superior at drumming up a quick controversy over some actual or perceived Democratic outrage. But Democrats and sympathetic advocacy groups are catching up fast.

Not only is the NYT carrying moveon's water on this, but they included a hefty part of moveon's mission statement in the story as well.

Another Phony War Hero? Atlantic City's Democrat Mayor Goes AWOL

Looks like we have another case of a Democrat embellishing his military record. Though, of course, this account from the Philadelphia Inquirer doesn't identify his party affiliation.

To be fair, the Mayor of Atlantic City, did indeed serve in the military, but claimed to be a Green Beret when he was not.

A.C. mayor goes AWOL

ATLANTIC CITY - Where's the mayor? Not since "Where's Waldo?" and "Where's the Beef?" has such a query caused such a stir.

I'll bet there are lots of folks who didn't realize that some of the anti-war activists claiming to be soldiers are phony, and are fascinated to be educated by Harry Reid and friends...

OT to file in Duh section...Carol Lam sucked
and Feinstein was right to complain about her

In the seven months since Carol Lam was forced to resign as the U.S. attorney in San Diego – ostensibly because she was not prosecuting enough cases – criminal case filings have increased significantly in the federal courthouse.

U.S. Attorney Karen Hewitt
And if the current pace continues, more cases will be filed this year in the southern district of California than in any year since 2001.

Filings were up 70 percent in August, compared with the year before. At this rate, filings will be up 32 percent overall for the year.

However, the surge in case filings began even before Lam left office, data from the Federal Court Clerk's Office show.

In January, when word of Lam's imminent departure first leaked out, 230 criminal cases were filed. That was a 38 percent increase from the same month in 2006.

It set the trend for the year. Only in June did filings fall – down by 10 percent from June 2006. Since then, filings rebounded.

The sharp increase is quietly welcomed by some federal law enforcement officials. They say U.S. Attorney Karen Hewitt, a career prosecutor named to replace Lam in February, displays a greater willingness to prosecute border-related cases.

facist McCarthite book burner Hamsher on taking Rush out -- that sounds like a threat!

The fact that the Democrats aren’t going after Rush hammer and tongs is largely due to their failure to see themselves as an opposition party involved in an ideological war. The view from inside the Beltway Bubble seems to obscure this plain and simple truth that appears quite obvious to those of us outside of it. The Republicans understand it, and that’s why they’ve been so successful at controlling the agenda as a minority party.

Rush is a huge part of why they’re always on the ropes, losing these battles of phony outrage and spin. It’s time to take him out.

that's incitful, what does she want, a hit on Rush?

It was horrific to hear them characterized as simply phoney, when Senator, Reid, Durbin, Kerry, Kennedy and Congressmen Murthas charaterizations were so much more descriptive.

Feigned Democrat Outrage By Congressman Roy Blunt

Two weeks after the Senate overwhelmingly condemned Moveon.org’s attack against General Petraeus without the majority leader’s support, Sen. Reid has suddenly found his voice. His feigned outrage at Rush Limbaugh seems remarkably misplaced at best, and part of a larger, more cynical attempt to pander to his party’s radical and open-handed financial supporters at worst. It’s a stratagem that’s especially unfortunate considering that “phony soldiers” actually do exist – men and women of no conscience and no respect who perpetrate the most heinous lies imaginable, just to provide themselves a platform to make a political statement about Iraq.

This could’ve been an opportunity for Democrats to demonstrate real leadership by standing shoulder to shoulder with those of us who support our men and women in uniform, and condemn the reprehensible actions of people like Jesse MacBeth. Rush Limbaugh is clearly one of these men. His support for our troops is incontrovertible; his respect for the men and women who put themselves in harm’s way for this country a core element of his personality. Any reasonably objective analysis of the audio tape from his program last week would’ve made that point abundantly clear. But if this reaction from Democrats is any indication, it doesn’t appear that any of them actually listened...

General Wesley Clark just proposed a new doctrine on Tucker Carlson's show:

There's no reason for the American taxpayer to pay for Rush to assault the character of men and women who serve in the armed forces.

He wants Limbaugh's show removed from the Armed Forces network and Rush dropped into a live volcanoe.

Might not have that last part correct.

But the standard is an interesing one. If he truly wants no taxpayer money used by people (not just Rush I assume) to "assault the character of the men and women who serve in the armed forces", then one presumes we may apply this to, let us say, academia, our public institutions of higher learning.

If people employed there "assault the character" of our military, may tax money be pulled from them as well?

Hmm, I'm liking this deal General. You get Rush, we get to empty out about 40% of the faculty lounges across the country.

It's a deal.

So, General Wesley Clark waded into the latest controversy involving Rush Limbaugh
with an appearance on Tucker Carlson's show on MSNBC. Carlson and Clark had a feisty
exchange highlighted by the creation of what one might call the "Clark Doctrine."

The good General summarized his battle plan thusly (secret details will be in tomorrow's NY Times):

There's no reason for the American taxpayer to pay for Rush to assault the character of men and women who serve in the armed forces.

My only quibble is that I think that 40% was way too charitable. Especially since nobody in the science or engineering departments actually has time to waste in a faculty lounge. More realistic is most faculaty lounges completely empty.

The last time I checked, there is nothing in the Constitution that could even be vaguely construed to permit members of Congress to lobby for the censorship of a particular political opponent. In fact, the Bill of Rights explicitly prohibits it, though I have some sympathy with the argument that you don't need the Bill of Rights for this, the body of the original Constitution is sufficient. So, it is clearly an abuse of power, and in fact a Constitutional no-no, for the Democrats in Congress to act as they have done.

That is not to say that private individuals, or for that matter political individuals speaking exclusively for themselves, should not be allowed to criticize Limbaugh. On our "side", we welcome all comments, because it just goes to show how dumb you guys really are. The mere fact that you do not acknowledge the absolute truth of my first paragraph shows us exactly what you are all about.

Patriotism is wanting GOOD for your country. Is stirring up factional ill-will
GOOD for America ? There ARE people out there who want to harm America: so we need to agree together that we ARE together, despite our differences. (That's what "E Pluribus Unum" means.) People who stir up division and ill-will are deeply harmful to America. But I save special contempt for those like Limbaugh, Michael Moore, Ann Coulter, etc., who use divisiveness to become famous and rich.

Frak that! Cue Replay: One side commits to the war ...

  • The other side goes along and votes in favor because the country is angry and voting against is political suicide;
  • Then the other side balks as the anger subsides;
  • Then the other side wages an anti war campaign;
  • Then the other side lies about being misled to cover for their insincerity from the beginning;
  • Then the other side wages a leak campaign of secrets and false "secrets" to further influence the public against the war;
  • Then the other side engages prosecution against the administration for responding to false leaks;
But don't call them unpatriotic.
Don't call them traitors.

Was Haditha a deliberate propaganda ploy by al Qaeda?
Clarice Feldman
Defend Our Marines notes something everyone else has missed:
October 6, 2007 - Buried in the mountain of exhibits attached to the once secret Haditha, Iraq murder inquiry prepared by US Army Maj. Gen. Eldon A. Bargewell is an obscure Marine Corps intelligence summary (see pdf) that says the deadly encounter was an intentional propaganda ploy planned and paid for by Al Qaeda foreign fighters.

Veteran military defense attorney Gary Meyers said he never understood why the Naval Criminal Investigative Service special agents leading the Haditha criminal investigation didn't "examine the linkage" between Al Qaeda, the local insurgency and the events at Haditha. Meyers was an attorney on the defense team that successfully defended Justin Sharratt, a Marine infantryman accused of multiple murders at Haditha.

The report - apparently overlooked by a Washington press corps awash in leaked Bargewell documents and secret Naval Criminal Investigative Service reports - shows that Marine Corps intelligence operatives were advised of the scheme to demonize the Marines by an informant named Muhannad Hassan Hamadi. The informant was snared by 3/1 Marines on December 11 2005 and decided to cooperate.

Planning a "massacre"

The attack was carried out by multiple cells of local Wahabi extremists and well-paid local gunmen from Al Asa'ib al-Iraq [the Clans of the People of Iraq] that were led by Al Qaeda foreign fighters, the summary claims. Their case was bolstered by Marine signal intercepts revealing that the al Qaeda fighters planned to videotape the attacks and exploit the resulting carnage for propaganda purposes.

Eleven insurgents involved in the attack are identified by name and affiliation in the details of the summary. All of them were killed or captured in the days immediately following the Haditha incident.

During the November Haditha battle, the insurgents secreted themselves among local civilians to guarantee pursuing Marines would catch innocent civilians in the ensuing crossfire. On January 6, 2006 six insurgents who tried to do the same thing at another location in Haditha were turned in to Coalition authorities before they could mount a similar assault, the report says.
Read the whole report. Interestingly, it was blogger Steve Gilbert who came closest, earliest to the truth about Haditha.

Clarice Feldman
Sweetness and Light has obtained Lt Col Ware's report on SSgt Frank D. Wuterich and you can read it here. The key finding in the report is this:

"Finally, although I believe the Government will fail to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that SSgt Wuterich committed any offenses other than dereliction of duty, due to the serious nature of the charges, I recommend referral to a general court-martial"

What is amazing is the naivete in the way our the actions of our opponents in this conflict are judged.
The opposition hides amongst civilians,sends children to be suicide bomber and has no compunction about mass murder to gain a propaganda advantage,yet they are always given a pass by those who find it inconceivable.

kim

It's not naivete, P; they've slipped the surly bounds of reality. Listen to the discourse on interrogation.
============================

kim

The trouble I have, C, is with dereliction.
We are 3D into liability with that fiction.
==========================================

clarice

Ware isn't saying they WILL find him guilty of derelection, just that although he's recommending a court martial on negligent homicide, dereliction is the maximum he thinks the evidence read in the light most favorable to the prosection supports.

kim

Combat is the deliberate bipartisan infliction of fear of imminent death. To think that there can be a simple line of demarcation where that effort is suspended is fantastical.
===============================

kim

Yes, C, but the charge of dereliction must be defended against vigourously. I'm afraid I'm going to have to make my self sensible of the facts. I'd have preferred to ignore the clouds issuing from the teakettle, but the Soros shriek is harder to ignore.
==========================

kim

And his reason for recommending the general court martial is bogus, and may violate rights.
============================================

Rick Ballard

Kim,

I'm actually OK with it going to a court martial. There won't be a Fitzjerk prosecutor involved and the 'jury' average IQ will be safely above three digits - much more than can be said for most civilian juries.

Sgt. Wuterich will be OK. The al Times and Abscam Jack will squirm and sneer but that's as sure as sunrise in any event.
