Go, Republican debaters. Sorry, go, Republican voters and Democrat debaters.
Where is my scorecard?
The debate is at 9 EST, MSNBC.

Is this going to be a drinking thread as well?
Posted by: RichatUF | January 15, 2008 at 08:00 PM
I predict Sen. Clinton will come out swinging, and say that Obama isn't even all-black, but only half-black.
Then Obama will say that, well, Edwards is more of a woman than Hillary, and she'll give him that one.
I'm sure glad Kucinich will be there.
Posted by: PaulL | January 15, 2008 at 08:03 PM
Rich, You convinced me.
But my arm really hurts. You didn't have to twist so hard

Does anyone know the debate format for tonight? Are plants allowed to ask questions?
Posted by: Ann | January 15, 2008 at 08:06 PM
Where's the American Idol open thread?
Posted by: hit and run | January 15, 2008 at 08:10 PM
Yes it is a drinking thread. In fact it is mandatory. Please check the box to show you have complied. And yes, I'm sure Hillary has a ficus or two in the audience.
Posted by: Jane | January 15, 2008 at 08:11 PM
I have my cocktail(s) at the ready. What are the drinking signals, tonight?
Posted by: centralcal | January 15, 2008 at 08:11 PM
My only hope for tonight is that someone looses her new found voice and can only answer questions with a cackle.
Posted by: Ann | January 15, 2008 at 08:13 PM
Ann, that's a given (cackle).
Posted by: centralcal | January 15, 2008 at 08:15 PM
If the word "race" comes up you have to take a gulp - not a sip mind you, a gulp. And if any questions are asked about the war on terror or immigration, down the whole thing.
If Hillary cries, the next round is on me.
Oh and you can't drink during any healthcare questions, unless of course they go past the first hour.
Posted by: Jane | January 15, 2008 at 08:16 PM
Ann-
Are plants allowed to ask questions?
Not sure about our metaphyte friends, but I'm sure supporters of Kucinich (D-Zeta Reticuli) will be out in force-Area 51 isn't very far away.
Drink on "change" or "hope" and chug on "Area 51", "conspiracy", or "alien[s]"
Posted by: RichatUF | January 15, 2008 at 08:16 PM
DrinK: When you here "In my whole life"
Drink: "My father worked in the mill his whole life"
Drink: I HAVE WORKED 35 YEARS FOR CHANGE!!!!
Drink: Everytime Kucinich gets to speak
Drink: When Hillary smiles and/or cackles
Well ,we should be pretty drunk my the end!!
Posted by: Ann | January 15, 2008 at 08:19 PM
Rich I think I will follow your drinking advice. If I follow Jane's I will be passed out within the first 15 to 30 minutes of the damned debate.
I have two TV's on, so I can follow Fox and the debate. Besides, I think Jane and Elliot actually do a better job than the candidates!!!
Posted by: centralcal | January 15, 2008 at 08:21 PM
Harumph!
And Harumph again because I want 2 TV's - actually I want three so I can keep an eye on Idol. I'm only doing color commentary tonite. Elliott gets the main course!
Posted by: Jane | January 15, 2008 at 08:24 PM
Oh dear - the race between Hillary and Jim Uncommitted is "too close to call" based on exit polls.
How fun is that!
Posted by: Jane | January 15, 2008 at 08:25 PM
"I have two TV's on"
Centaical, that made me laugh because my husband doesn't understand how I can have a T.V. on, a radio on, and use the computer at the same time.

Someone impersonating Obama (why are you looking at me?) left this in the comments at Ace of Spades:

Posted by: Topsecretk9 | January 15, 2008 at 08:31 PM
Well, I have 2 TV's on - one in the great room one in my bedroom . . . if I get drunk I may wander off and never return.

Fred Thompson is supposed to be on with Hannity & Colmes tonight and I don't want to miss that. So, I may just follow the debate here. The Dems are pretty boring in every debate they have, so I don't expect to miss much.

How about this Top?
Former Democratic Senator Don Riegle compared the Clinton machine to the Soviet Union today.
The Detroit Free Press reported:
The Michigan Democratic ballot is a sham that was rigged by Hillary Rodham Clinton, her husband and her supporters to give the nation the impression that she’s the leading candidate in Michigan, an angry former Sen. Don Riegle said Monday.

Speaking of racism ... and well sexism in the Dem campaigns these days.
You do realize there is a very simple, logical and irrefutable way for them to handle this.

I think it very understandable that Uncommitted's human warmth and winsome charm would draw a significant number of voters when contrasted with the Red Witch's personality.

Posted by: windansea | January 15, 2008 at 09:00 PM
Okay, I'm already tired of running between rooms. I'm sticking with Fox on the TV and Jane/Elliot/JOMers for the blow by blow of the debate. If it comes to fisticuffs, then I will run to the bedroom TV (only if Jane tells me to).
Posted by: centralcal | January 15, 2008 at 09:00 PM
Will someone keep us posted on the results on Fox during the debate? Olbermann takes a shot at Bush. HE'S NOT RUNNING!
Olby declares Romney the winner in Michigan. He does not comment on the uncommitted vote.

YIkes! "100 black men" is a sponsor.
Special thanks to Harry (we lost the war) Reid.
We start with "race" Obama laughs, Clinton smirks.
"How did we get here?"
Oh dear, we won't have race and gender as part of the campaign. John is the son of a mill-worker (glug, glug, glug) It was the supporter's fault and we are all family and so different from the republicans, - we are all here because of MLK. (huh?)
Obama - Hillary knocked it out of the park no reason to go on, so I'll talk about war and economy instead.
Edwards - I know segregation, I lived thru segregation, I was there at the lunch counter. I felt their pain.
Timmy Russert pushes on: It's all your fault Obama - do you regret pushing this story? It's all the staff's fault but I will begrudgingly take responsibility.
Posted by: Jane | January 15, 2008 at 09:10 PM
Yes he won WY.
But WY wasn't contested and no one campaigned there and you and I make up probably 23% of all people who know WY even happened.
Notice I didn't put NV in my list either. And it is more important than WY....
I'm talking the media primary as much as delegates....

Brian Williams tells us who is sponsoring the debate and goes over the ground rules. Introduces Russert and Morales, who will be doing the emailed questions. Now Williams tells us that Romney will win. I find it wonderful that the Democratic debate included that.
Williams: MLK's birthday. Race is an issue. References the Johnson remark, inter alia. How did we get here?
Clinton: We've moved on. MLK's birthday. We're here because MLK's dreams realized. Edwards son of mill worker. Obama profound inspirational story. Beneficiary of civil rights as a woman. Exuberant and uncontrollable supporters. We're all family, so different from Republicans on issues we care about. All of us here because of King and other icons. Obama and I want campaign to be about us as individuals.
Obama: Hillary said it well. Nation at war, planet in peril, bad economy. Race always and issue. Premise of my campaign is that we need to come together to solve challenges. Can't fall into trap of division. Party, King, and hopefully my campaign stand for that. More unites than divides.
Edwards: I lived in segregated south. Feel enormous responsibility to move forward. Lots of sacrifice by King, others. I witnessed a protest at Woolworth's. Don't go back, go forward. About creating real equality in America.
Russert: Obama pushing storyline. Should you have?
Obama: Responsibility for tone in campaign is mine and I want to be focused on issues. Serious issues and differences as we will see today. Everyone here committed to racial equality. I'll be judged on whether I can deliver jobs, solution to mortgage crisis, sensible foreign policy. I want to be judged on merits.
Russert: Attempt to marginalize you?
Obama: No. Race factor in society. What happened in Iowa shows Americans will judge based on who can bring change.
Russert: Bradley effect New Hampshire?
Obama: No, Hillary ran good campaign there. Race will be close in Nevada and South Carolina. They'll vote for candidate who is speaking best on most pressing problems. Change comes from American people. Need unified America demanding change, otherwise lobbyists dominate.

Billionaires for the Red Witch

Gee whiz spammer, get lost or we will have to tell Hillary on you.
Hillary looks like she is falling asleep.
MLK was the change guy, that's his legacy.
Edwards looks smug.
So Hill, why didn't you fire Robert Johnson? (I swear that is the question). She defends Bob. She won't be firing him. He sent out a memo. No one has ever heard of him. (I swear). His comments were out of bounds.

Posted by: hit and run | January 15, 2008 at 09:17 PM
Oh a whitey question for Edwards-
Posted by: RichatUF | January 15, 2008 at 09:17 PM
Russert: You said you'd kick misbehaving people out of your campaign. What about Johnson?
Clinton: Bob gave a statement. Accept his word. Campaign to important to get diverted or subverted with misrepresentations of what Dems represent. Need leadership on a range of issues. Will people keep homes, have jobs. I went door to door in Vegas, met people laid off. What's important is what I say and stand for.
Russert: Comments out of bounds?
Clinton: Yes.
Email: Differences slight. Should I resent being forced to choose between first viable woman and black?
Edwards: Vote for who can bring change. Washington broken, problems in one of the America's. Mill worker, first in college in family. My life central to my campaign. Personal struggle for me. I'll never stop fighting on issues like union organizing, health care. Some differences on policy.
Morales: What's a white dude to do?
Edwards: Proud we have woman and African-American running. I respect they want to be considered on merits. That they are doing well says good things about America.
Posted by: Elliott | January 15, 2008 at 09:18 PM

Ch-ch-ch-changes. I was a mill worker - no my family was a mill worker. It's about the fight. (Cue Rocky theme song). This is my life! This and my 10k sq foot home at Chapel Hill. I can't help it that I'm white.
Obama,Now to that other pesky minority - women. Hillary cried, and people died. You were mean to her at the last debate. You said she was likable enough.
Oh I regret that. It came out wrong. (Actually I took it the way he meant it But I'm not the liberal press.)
We need change. Hillary looks on like the doting grandmother, and they are all co-opting Romney's message.
Clinton's piling on ad - did it look that way John boy? It wasn't that way.
(Isn't this so democrat? No issues all emotion. Can we have Evita sing a tune too?)

Posted by: Porchlight | January 15, 2008 at 09:23 PM
Than God that McCain lost.
Here's some of why I hate him:
****
McCain's remarks and the event seem aimed at independents — the appearance of Lieberman, the pledge that "we will never torture again," "we will address global warming and require China and India to be included as well"... "No drilling in ANWR, nor in the Everglades, nor off the coast of Florida, nor off the coast of Florida... If states want to have drilling off their coast, as Louisiana does, that's their right. As a federalist, I will respect that as well."
"To think that drilling in ANWR is the solution to our incredible energy needs is frankly, is not keeping in the reality of what's there, and what it would take to get it out."
****

The audience interjects that these are "race based questions".
Hill, what's the consequence against republicans for saying Obama is raising false hopes?
Sheesh this sounds like a very sober democrat strategy meeting. Hill says they will unify later. Bring on the mud. Besides, I'm ready on day one. She of course ignores the question.
Will you acknowledge that Obama and edwards are also prepared? No.
Obama is not an operating officer. What does that mean? Oh he was talking about a secretary I guess. He's the guy with vision, and he can spark the debate. If not, he'll just declare that he's a black man.
Strength: Obama - bringing people together.
Weakness: I lose paper.
Edwards: Strength - I grew up in a mill. I fight. I win.
Weakness: I'm too emotional when it comes to pain. Cites a mill worker in pain.
Hillary: Strength: Passionately committed (yes she should be committed). My life's work is with children - I learned it in my church. (HUH?) I can make changes.
Weakness: I get impatient and frustrated when people don't see it my way.
The president is more than vision. You have to be able to run the bureaucracy and Bush is bad and didn't do that. He's a failure - he caused Katrina, haliburton, and everything else.
Obama: Hillary misconstrued me. Bush was on time, didn't lose paper, but could not listen to other perspectives. (How on earth would you know)?
Posted by: Jane | January 15, 2008 at 09:32 PM
Williams: "Likable enough, Hillary." Frank Rich criticized. Regret?
Obama: Regret because not how it was intended. Meant to say plenty likable. Dealt with non-issues in that debate. All candidates good and capable. Need to bring country together, get rid of special interests. Enlist America in changing health care, tax care. Not who has nicest smile, it's who can bring leadership through difficult times and transform Washington.
Williams: Did you and Obama gang up on Hillary?
Edwards: Wasn't that way. My job is to speak the truth as I see it whatever the consequences. I'm fighting for change against the entrenched moneyed interest that oppress the middle class. I've never taken money from lobbyists, who oppose the change we need. I've lived the promise of America. Nevada is a place people come to find that. Promise being jeopardized by moneyed interests.
Heckler: Race based questions.
Russert: Bill says Obama can win. Consequences of you saying Obama not ready?
Clinton: Hard fought primary season. Highest regard for Obama and Edwards. Party will unite around nominee. Issue is who is ready on day one, who knows the problems. War, recession, foreclosures, uninsured, bad energy policy. Bush begging for more oil output. We should have an energy policy now. We all think we should win. I'm offering my experience, qualifications, and ideas, which are all rooted in the people I've met over the past 35 years.
Russert: Others prepared?
Clinton: Up to voters. Let them imagine us in Oval Office dealing with crisis.
Russert: Said weakness is that not operating officer?
Obama: Describing how I view presidency. Not about schedules. About having vision. Bringing together the best people. Solving health care, energy, keeping people in their homes. Mobilizing and inspiring American people. I've shown leadership. Sound judgment, a vision for the future, resonate with American people. Oppose those opposing real change.
Russert: Strength and weakness.
Obama: Bring people from different perspectives together. Messy, lose things, I need people around me.
Edwards: For 54 years I've been fighting. At first for me, then for kids and families. Then in public life. Weakness, powerful emotional response that I see to pain around me. Mentions mill worker who will be losing job whose dignity and self-respect are now at issue.
Clinton: Committed to this country and what it stands for. I want to bring change the way I have for 35 years. I've been blessed. I want to help people, deliver change, help people reach potential. I get impatient, frustrated when others don't understand that we can do more. I push too hard sometimes. President is Chief Executive Officer. I respect what Barack said but you have to run bureaucracy and hold people accountable. We've seen the failure of the Harvard Business school model. Katrina, no-bid contracts. Need to set tone, vision, goals, but you also have to manage.
Obama: You have to be a manager, I never said otherwise. Have to bring team together. Bush was on time, never lost anything but he couldn't listen to other perspectives, people who disagreed with him ideologically. Couldn't get people to work together, couldn't get American people to understand costs and consequences of war. Didn't ask tough questions before going to war. Those are about judgment not management. Bring people together, mobilize country.

There is false information about Obama, he's hiding the fact he is a Muslim and won't pledge allegiance. How do you combat that? I'm a Christian, I say the pledge, I was sworn in on a bible. I'm a victim. But Americans will see thru.
Hillary looks like she is on lithium. She's got that rocking thing going on.
Now to a break!
Posted by: Jane | January 15, 2008 at 09:35 PM
Williams: Muslim, oath of office on Koran, won't pledge allegiance to flag.
Obama: Christian, sworn-in on bible, I lead pledge of allegiance in Senate sometimes. Lies all over internet. American people smarter than given credit for. These emails were going out in Iowa and NH. We lost NH because of our campaign not these emails. Climate change, health care, tax relief, vision. American will sort out lies from truth.

LAS VEGAS REVIEW JOURNAL to Endorse Obama... Developing...
Posted by: Topsecretk9 | January 15, 2008 at 09:43 PM
Williams: Economy. Let candidates ask each other questions. NBC Nightly News led with CitiGroup and Merrill Lynch panhandling. What can be done? Is so much foreign ownership wrong?
Clinton: I'm very concerned. Sovereign wealth funds. Raised issue month and a half ago. Money controlled by government or people close to government. Need to know more about who's behind them. World Bank others should have rules. These companies made bets on subprime mortgages. Getting worst of both worlds. Moratorium on foreclosures. Freeze interest rates for five years. Be more aggressive.
Williams: Kuwait involved.
Edwards: More transparency. Fundamental problem is with American economy. Growth benefits wealthy and big corporations. Middle class worried about jobs, health care, foreclosures. People come to Nevada to get better life for children. Historic moment for American. Will we bestow better America for our children.
Obama: We don't have an energy policy, that's why these funds can come in. No investment in alternative fuels by this administration. Subprime lending mess because administration doesn't believe in oversight. I proposed regulations that would have stopped some of this stuff, like more transparency on teaser rates. We have best financial markets but people need to trust them. More transparency.

Tops,
I think it is just that Hillary has the lock box on all testicles, tonight.
Posted by: Ann | January 15, 2008 at 09:47 PM
OK, McCain already doesn't like Romney.
Did Romney "step on" McCain's speech intentionally, by coming out right as McCain was starting, forcing Fox to break away from McCain?
Does McCain's infamous temper get to him and does he lash out at all?

The questions are stupid. The candidates are even more stupid.
Thanks Elliott and Jane

Elliott thank goodness you are here. I just can't take this seriously. I've learned to hate mills, that's for sure.
Now on to the economy. The candidates ask each other.
First - Citigroup and Merrill lynch have borrowed 20 billion bucks from bad people. Americans think this is wrong. And Congress may decide what companies can do.
Hillary shares Brian Williams concern. She begins a lecture on the sourcing. She will make foreign countries transparent and more rules for the companies. It's Bush's fault, but I'd declare a moratorium on foreclosures, let all those people live for free.
Edwards: Kuwait is a country and we helped it. Only the wealthy have growth. The middle class is insecure. He neglects to answer the question.
Obama: We don't have an energy policy. That's the problem.
So they all want to regulate and none know how or what except edwards who would put all the employers out of business. Obama wants more oversite - let's put Senator Waxman on this.
Poor folk are feeling the pinch. Edwards you voted for a bankruptcy law that made it harder on women. Do you regret it.
Yes. (Is there any vote he doesn't regret?)
So how, if we put the employers out of business do we raise income? Universal health care, energy policy, a national law against lenders, and a higher wage (who cares there are no employers). Free college. We need to get rid of banks.
Hill, do you regret your vote on the bankruptcy bill?
Sure, but don't worry because it never became law and that made me happy. We need new bankruptcy law. Don't worry be happy. It's all predatory. I'll forgive the debt. Then she injects race. Everyone is mean to minorities, they are the victims, they get fired in a bad economy. It's urgent.

Ann:
Hillarity's lock box, LOL!
Nobody suggested drinking on "corporation"? Or did you not want to lose consciousness too quickly?

Russert: Edwards voted for bill that made it harder to declare bankruptcy?
Edwards: I regret it. Half of bankruptcies from medical costs. Single moms can get punished much to severely when kids get high medical bills. Costs rising but middle class incomes not going up. Need someone who understands this on a personal level and will bring universal health care, new energy policy, law about predatory lending, higher minimum wage indexed, more money for college students. Big banks shouldn't be intermediaries for student loans.
Russert: Clinton voted for same bill.
Clinton: I regret that vote, though it never became law. And I opposed 2005 law. Bankruptcy reform needed so homeowners have right options. Moratorium on foreclosure, freezing interest rates, more transparency. Move urgently, reform bankruptcy laws to provide relief. Black and brown groups, sponsors, care about these issues because they are affected disproportionately by predatory lending. First to be laid off. Can't wait. 1 million homes lost, drop in prices, housing wealth going down. Democratic congress will act.
Obama: I opposed both. Pushed by credit card and mortgage companies who put their interests ahead of the American people. Hillary's right that we need reform, that was why I introduced a bill 18 months ago. Have to change Washington, get rid of special interests. I met people whose homes are being foreclosed. Give breaks to people in bankruptcy because of healthcare. I've proposed $10 billion housing fund to help people living in their homes.
