Over on another site there is rampant speculation going on about Hill holding an even larger bombshell about to be released. I dont know that its true, but saw more than one report that says guys are ready to go on the record about a Jim McGreevey type incident involving His Hopiness.

Does that doom him or cement him in with the Democrats is what I am trying to figure out. I guess we will know soon enough.

MayBee

I think the trade part is the big blooper.

Sara

Ralph, I know. One branch of my family went South to the Carolinas, another West to Ohio/Indiana, and my branch stayed in Pennsylvania, where they were farmers, owned hotels along the trade route from Philly to Pgh.,and established businesses and trade. They took their places in the community, in their churches and in their local governments, particularly on the school boards and in education. They became the doctors and engineers, the hard working, and sometimes hard drinking Welshmen and Scots-Irish. The valued their freedoms above all else, but God.

I'd be tempted to agree that BO is toast except for one thing. Nobody in the popular media is going to ask him tough questions about his statements. By Sunday morning they(the media) will be off this story and finding bad things (true or not) to say about Hillary, or better, McCain. Just watch.

Shorter Obama: Things are falling apart, but I promise a chicken in every pot and a pony for every child. All we have to do is eat the rich!

AST

He talks like jobs are a constitutional right and the Second Amendment isn't. Doesn't he want his relatives in Africa to have a chance at a decent life like Americans? Or does he believe that economics is a zero-sum game, like most Marxists?

"college is too expensive, and even if you can figure out a way to go to college you won’t be able to recoup the cost of the degree in many of the professions for which you needed it in the first place"

My son is going to community college in the fall. After two years, he'll have a basic engineering degree (non-licensed) that will get him a job with a starting salary that's higher than mine right now.

Obama out of touch? I think so.

paul

Obama is pulling 39% among white democrats.

Kerry held 40% white support in the general and lost.

Does anyone in their right mind think that Obama will fare better among independents and conservatives?

He doesn't get 35% of the white vote in Nov, and I can already envision the columns fom the NYT(if it is still in print) that will tell me how americans are racist.

paul

"And it's not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy toward people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations."

Danube of Thought

Oh, the pixie dusted ones! All their hopes, all their dreams...

They poured all their juvenile longings into this empty vessel, and now with nearly seven months until election day he's exposing himself as a glib charlatan more every day. I think a serious split of that party along racial lines is actually going to happen. Live by the sword, die by the sword.

Couldn't happen to a nicer bunch.

Obama was explaining why middle class PA voters vote against their own economic interests to a group of Marin County voters voting against their own economic interests.

College is too expensive. For the crap, overrated schools and liberal professors shove down the students throats it's boderline ripping off parents investment ala fraud- wish a plaintiff lawyer would take this up - the class pool would be HUGE!

As Exhibit A I offer Barack Hussein Obama. Educated at all the best Ivy League schools at an enormous expense that he and his charming wife Michelle are still paying off. And what did he get?

Not enough sense to know when he is talking down his black-n-blueblood nose at people, nor when to keep his mouth shut.

A pair of market research firms in South Carolina polled voters there in April and September and concluded that if McCain’s brand were a product, it would be part Ford pickup, part Wrangler jeans and part Timex watch.

Old dependable. Well, old somewhat predictable.

This really is shaping up to a Coke vs Pepsi election. The Real Thing vs A Choice for a New Generation.

Hillary, of course, is just Red Bull.

Elliott

I hate to be a wet blanket, but I just have an innate fear of getting overconfident this early on in the election.

Donna V., I know exactly where you are coming from. Responding to a query from the Danube of Thought in the wake of the Wright revelations, I said that Obama had taken a hit but only needed a bit of good fortune to turn his general election prospects around.

I think, though, that this is worse for Obama's electoral prospects than the Wright stuff, not because voters are more disturbed by it, but because it's fair game for both Clinton and McCain and there is no way to spin these remarks in a good way.

Elliott

You're welcome, MayBee.

Former government officials have recently been called before a federal grand jury and confronted with phone records documenting calls with a reporter who covers intelligence issues at The New York Times, according to people with detailed knowledge of the investigation.

A former official who was called before the grand jury in Alexandria, Va., said that he was shown extensive phone records that documented the date and duration of conversations with James Risen, a Times reporter in Washington, and that prosecutors were trying to identify Mr. Risen’s sources. Mr. Risen is fighting a grand jury subpoena for testimony about his sources for a 2006 book on the Central Intelligence Agency...

The grand jury witness, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he did not want to draw new attention to himself, and others with knowledge of the investigation say it is unclear whose phone records were obtained by the Justice Department ..

As others have said, it also reinforces existing suspicions ("typical white people", Michelle, etc.) The First Couple of Buppie Condescension and all that.

Topsecretk9

and is this odd?

Joel Kurtzberg, a lawyer in New York who is representing Mr. Risen on behalf of both The Times and his book publisher, The Free Press, said he had no comment on the investigation.

Tom, I don't think Hill did this, Obama did it on purpose; Just like he evaded the muslim question, then gave different answers, then recites the call to prayer in arabic to Nick Kristof; Just like he never heard a racist sermon for 20 years, then by the last of the three show PR blast, he had heard something from someone... then he gives 'the speech' where he says he knew on national tv but it's our fault. Crickets... even though he wrote about the first sermon he heard that wasn't that different in his book (just like the granny situation).

Let's start a therapy fund, intervention, something. It's time for all of blogs/talk radio (blog talk too), to invite the psychoanalysts on this guy and his wife.
WTH, that body language lady on BOR too.

I've never witnessed such. The rubes (that he calls rubes in 3D, along with the wife), eat it up. I tell you, if he put down a rug and recited the call to prayer... presto Shia, 20,000 converts banging their heads to the floor at a rally. What happened to our country... He's like Marx, Carter, Trotsky and Albright, sprinkled with Jim Jones (not the band), Applewhite, Kucinich, Idi Amin and Russell from Fat Albert. He should have taken dad's lead and seek office in Kenya... away from this racist wasteland; My bad, Michelle can't struggle on 400K there.

Cue Rollins. Liar or Low Self Opinion STAT

Elliott

JB, good point.

Tops, you were the first to bring up Dean's remark. I just thought it was funny that that had been one of my first thoughts too, especially since we'd both made the same point about the Wilsons within two minutes of each other a couple of months ago.

I'll try, Tops.

My hope is they get the Risen stuff all wrapped up and on to indictments before Obama's DOJ is in place. I expect they'll have "grave concerns about the 'chilling effect' such an investigation has on whistle-blowers and the press." Maybe we can have a completely non-political removal of the US Attorney in charge of this, too.

Obama has the race riot veto.

1. Obama gets the nod. Hillary voters sulk.
2. Hillary gets the nod. Obama voters hit the streets burn Denver. Never vote for a Democrat again (not all but enough).

Under which scenario would you rather lose an election? Either scenario is bad for down ticket races.

Which scenario promises a quicker recovery?

I think George Soros done broke the Democrat Party. I think it goes something like this: "You bought it. You broke it."

Tough choices.

The tin eared cosmopolitan seems to have no understanding of the significance of Pennsylvanian Rifle and its compatriot the Kentucky Rifle in American history, from the Revolutionary War to the Alamo. These guns are iconic.Somebody phone the NRA.

M. Simon

Was Obama's use of "cling" to their guns and religion telling? Is he saying racism, gun owning, and religion go hand in hand?

I think Barry is living proof that at least racism and religion go hand in hand.

Curly Smith

Kindly allow me to change two words in something Jay McDonough posted at 9:07 pm:

"Obama asserted Chicago voters are bitter and so simple and lacking in maturity and intelligence that they address their frustration by clinging to primitive and reactionary churches rather than addressing their problems in constructive ways."

Neo

When I posted this on this site yesterday, I had found the part ..

anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.

.. as just breathe taking in regard to the fact that just the day before Nancy Pelosi had taken the Columbian Free Trade agreement out of contention for an up or down vote.

By why would Nancy Pelosi be bitter ?

But alas, here was the leading contentor for the Democratic nomination for POTUS basically saying that this was a cynical act, probably a cynical political act which was not in the interest of the nation, but nonetheless standard Democratic fare of the day.

Are all Democratic candidates so cynical of the voters that they fell free to distort their own positions publicly while secretly knowing that they would not support it themselves ?

I will watch and wait for an answer.

M. Simon

The press's coverage of this is really fascinating.

They haven't a clue.

None.

Excellent!

Danube of Thought

Three months ago I thought Obama was a fascinating, charming and perhaps even inspirational guy. Now I've developed a strong dislike and comtempt for the man. He's a fraud.

amr

Mr. Obama has finally gotten caught expressing views that may negate his meteoric rise in national politics. His comments in San Francisco about blue color middle class Americans who he feels hold bigoted views when they are bitter/frustrated shows either he is lying on the campaign trail or will say what his listeners want to hear regardless of his personal beliefs; that is the common perception of a run of the mill politician, not that of an agent of change. Either way, he is now in serious trouble.

It now really shows that he has never been tested in a political battle, since his strong opponents were taken down by scandal and therefore he has yet to be vetted politically nor seen his character challenged significantly.

With Mr Obama’s wife’s statements and whinnying indicating her elitist views, this statement now shows that they both may be Ivy League snobs with little in common with the character of the hard working middle class Americans that he needs to support him.

JM Hanes

TSK9! Maybee! Elliott! Out of my head!

The Fop

The truth is that Obama doesn't relate to Black people from small towns in Alabama anymore than he relates to White people from small towns in Pennsylvania. Even on the South Side of Chicago, he has more in common with the academics at the University of Chicago than he does with the members of his own church, who have some connection to rural Southern culture.

It's no wonder all the White, left wing, college kids from the suburbs love him. He's one of them. Everything about Obama is phony, even his skin color.

MarkO

According to the NYT, The Great Transcender (I can hear the Platters now) has fully explained his stereotypical, racist remarks. The headline claims, he “slams” his critics. And that he does. But, as always, he avoids discussing his own comments. Is he the “new” Nixon?

Jane

So the Messiah is doing a town hall event where he intends to address his remarks.

Possible defenses:

It's all about change. Together we will change the culture so people don't need guns, and Reverend Wright will be our God.

memomachine

Hmmmmm.

I've been reading political books for years now. Blogs since they were first introduced. I grew up in a rural poor part of America where jobs were few and precious. And yet I still cannot wrap my mind around Obama's phrase.

Has he never just sat down with some rural people and talked?

Neo

I'm in Pennsylvania .. I wonder what they are say downtown ?

Gotta go and see ...

Jane

Ahhhh Obama meant (when he insulted 90% of Pennsylvanians) that there real problem is that they are one issue voters. Now I get it.

Pofarmer

Has he never just sat down with some rural people and talked?

Are you kidding? Do you know what those people do for a living??

In the immortal words of Hillary Clinton. "Why in the f@@k are we going here, there's no money here!!!"

North Illinios, and Southern Illinios might as well be two seperate states. You could chop it just South of Springfield, and you would have one of the most Liberal govt's to the North, and one of the most Rural Conservative govts to the South you've ever seen. Talk about disenfranchised. Rural Illinios voters are constantly disenfranchised by Urban voters. It's at the point now where Blago is cutting funding for 4-H and Extension programs, in one of the top agricultural states in the U.S.

Pofarmer

there real problem is that they are one issue voters

Guns, religion, and jobs is one issue?

Instead, they expressed a profoundly distorted view of this country."

MayBee and Elliott upthread - exactly. That's why I loathed Thomas Frank's book so much. He's saying, it's okay for us liberal elites to vote against our economic interests, because we're smarter than you and we know better. But we need you backwoods rubes to vote your economic interests (or what we take to be your interests) so we can win elections. I don't see much difference between that and Obama's remarks.

In the 1990s I was a fan of Frank's when he was the editor of The Baffler, a snarky hipster "journal" loosely based out of (surprise!) the University of Chicago. At the time I was an idiot and thought he/it was brilliant. He's a smart guy but like his hero Mencken is way too in love with his own cleverness.

My Mom was a Berkeley graduate from California who took a trip back to Pennsylvania to visit her Mother's family and met and became engaged to my Dad. 25 years later, my Dad's family still called her "that foreigner that Marshall married." Obama's Bible-Thumpin Gun-Humpin Comments Not Just Rude But Wrong

Karl at Protein Wisdom noted that those bitter Pennsylvanians make more than most of the rest of the country on average:

Pennsylvania has an above average per capital income, contrary to the stereotype Obama has seemingly borrowed from a Billy Joel song that was a hit before the 25-year period Obama mentions. Pennsylvania has an above average per capital income, contrary to the stereotype Obama has seemingly borrowed from a Billy Joel song that was a hit before the 25-year period Obama mentions. When the elite media and most Democrats say… “yeah… So? Obama is simply describing world as we know it,” they will be revealing that they know as much about those economic interests as they do religion or culture.

And as far as those bitter unemployed Pennsylvanians- the state unemployment rate is currently running below the national average at 4.9%:

Too funny. Even the venerable David Brock won't be able to salvage this thing for the one-worlders.

This will not hurt Obama.
Nobody cares about the kind of people he was talking about. It is more fashionable to appear to be more "sophisticated".

I hope McCain wins, but Obama hit a nerve here that many people here do not want to hear.

Many of these voters are indeed very close-minded and bigoted since they are no less dependent on the government than the people they like to caricature as "welfare queens".

DebinNC

"Since we've got someone as inspiring and charismatic as Brack Obama, who needs Reagan Democrats," opined Ima Bamboozled.

At least in terms of race and xenophobia he is right.

Many pf these people have an alarming bigotry towards anyone who does not look like themselves.

Which is funny, because while whites still don't want to talk about it, they're tripping over themselves:

At long last, after decades of not caring about race/racism, they have found the racist!

Obama has said nothing about Affirmative Action for the entire campaign. So how on earth is this relevant except as another attempt to bring his race into this?

And people seem shocked that the man would say this. You are real proof. Do you not have anything substantial to say against the man and his policies besides trying to stir up race fears?

Like his socialism?

Anything but race?

=====================================

There you go again.

Not everybody has to think like you do.

This election will be lost to Obama if we keep pushing the least intelligent ones out of our flock (conservatives) to the forefront.

Republicans will not win by yelling "Hussein!" or "Muslim!" all the way to November.

Please be serious.

Republicans cannot win on race, they must convince people once and for all that the government is not the answer.
That is the only way they will win.

And then, of course, when they finally do win, they have to act as if they believe that.

Might I remind you that Republicans are where they are today because of their love of earmarks and a rash of corruption scandals.

They would have better spent their time in Congress making the tax cuts permanent and fighting the war on terror in a systematic and straightforward way rather than scoring nonsense-points with Terry Schiavo.

We need people who are not afraid to be conservative and who understand that conservativism isn't the flipside to liberal complaining about how everyone else is ruining their lives (but in a liberal way) but a serious theory about government and governance.

boris

who feel entitled to a prosperous middle class life simply because they are White ...

BS. Anybody who wants to move up to "middle class" is not basing that on skin color. That is alarming stupidity.

boris

We need people who are not afraid to be conservative ...

"We" don't need idiots like you at all who are clearly afraid to use their own brain.

GMax

I again pleads for better Mobys. Can you discuss this with your Moveon superiors and see if there is anyone in reserve that can put on a plausible impersonation of a McCain supporter? You only need one, but it looks like the cupboard is bare...

Jon

Obama has convinced a swath of voters that "dirt" and "mudslinging" can be "done away with" (true or not).

If his own party cannot sock him from below, how on earth will Republicans be able to do it?

Look at the reaction Bill got from his conduct. You think the Republican party will be able to do that?

(Furthermore, do you think that is right?)

We cannot win with such a nonsense game. Nobody is going to care about Jeremiah Wright two months from now; how on earth are you going to win then?

You need to stop pussyfooting around, and push those people in our party (Republican) who voted (30%) in the primary for David Duke in the early nineties (!) way to the back of the party.

If you think we will win with them in front you have to be a comedian!

We need conservatives who can argue the intellectual case for conservativism to be in front; not the ones passed over by reconstructionism and the Civil Right Era.

Let us not pretend to be perfect. That is a sure way to lose.

(I know some people's heads are exploding now, but whatever. This is not going to end Obama's chances of winning the nomination--much more the general election. Where is McCain? We need to come better than this for sure. We have not even begun to talk about the money disparity. Time is of the essence.)

Rick Ballard

The memetic wimps are out in several places. The guy at PW ran through a fairly extensive repertoire of anti-McCain drivel. I didn't see anything that will stick.

Dunno sport, are you pretending to be a perfect moron ?

Jon

We need people who are not afraid to be conservative ...

"We" don't need idiots like you at all who are clearly afraid to use their own brain.

I again pleads for better Mobys. Can you discuss this with your Moveon superiors and see if there is anyone in reserve that can put on a plausible impersonation of a McCain supporter? You only need one, but it looks like the cupboard is bare...

If you want to win the election, you have to come up with another game.

None of this is any help.

I was tempted to accept GMax's premise and start rattling off conservative credentials, but a wave of dismay washed over me.

You couldn't be serious, GMax.

Hillary's "inevitable" aura really turned off a lot of voters. Republicans cannot adopt it.

(By the way "GMax", please go to the LGF dictionary and look up the proper meaning of a "moby". Every time you misuse it I cringe. Hint: If I were a "Moby", I would certainly not be bemoaning xenophobia. See if that helps you...)

If you want to win the election ...

Not running for election, just want to make fun of some alarming stupidity.

Jon

I'd be tempted to agree that BO is toast except for one thing. Nobody in the popular media is going to ask him tough questions about his statements. By Sunday morning they(the media) will be off this story and finding bad things (true or not) to say about Hillary, or better, McCain. Just watch.

You are correct. And everybody will forget about it by November.

Obama, like any Democrat, will come out swinging in a recession year and begin to promise the moon. And peopel are primed to accept his promises.

If strategy is not crafted well, we'll be flailing in November.

Obama has money like water.

One comment and a Jeremiah Wright won't counter this.

MCain needs to be raising money hand over fist.
While Hillary is alive he has a head start, but not for long.

Hint: If I were a "Moby",

Either way nobody is buying the act.
