For anyone interested, the Masters website will live video coverage starting an hour before the telecast as well as day long coverage of holes 11-13 and 15-16.
Ian Poulter is off to a birdie-birdie start. Bubba Watson is the only other player more than 1-under on the day, having gone out in 34.
With the wind whipping it's conceivable that Trevor Immelman could become the first champion since Craig Stadler in 1982 to fire a super-par final round. On the other hand, should he break 70 today, in addition to being a virtual lock to win, he would be the first player to record all four rounds in the 60s.
On the Amen Corner live coverage, Bobby Clampett says that Steve Flesch and Zach Johnson are the only players without any three-putts entering the final round.
On the Golf Channel, Craig Kahn and Brandel Chamblee speculate that the windy conditions will lead to lots of 4-10 foot par putts.
Who might benefit from this?
Year to date PGA Tour putting stats rank (putts per gir/putts per round):
Tiger Woods: 3t, 11.
Steve Flesch 48t, 61.
Brandt Snedeker 66t, 62t.
Stewart Cink 63t, 98t.
Paul Casey 123t, 128.
Trevor Immelman 202 (of 204), 196.
Isn't it annoying how they'll show the action out of sequence and we'll see player B putt and we'll see player A's ball-marker near the hole and then they'll show player A miss his putt as if we couldn't possibly have noticed that he's already missed it?
Tiger has let another good birdie opportunity slip by without taking advantage. But, with the conditions and the relative lack of experience contending in major championships among those ahead of him, he may not need to shoot better than 68.
In homage to Mickey Kaus, Elliott's assignment for the players who started the day at 2-under is to reach the clubhouse at 7-under. Most likely to do so: Padraig Harrington who is 2-under through six.
Of course that won't be good enough if Woods tee shot on the sixth is a sign of things to come.
Well, well, well. Immelman has rebounded nicely from his ragged start. If he makes his short birdie putt on the seventh, he'll likely extend his lead to four strokes (and maybe five).
The TV commentators have pointed out there were six left-handers in the field; I erred when I said there were five.
I believe that the answer to the day's trivia question is Jose Maria Olazabal in 1999. Ben Curtis was about to get married when he won the Open Championship in 2003, so he may be the last unmarried player to win a major.
Ann, if you approve of his footwear, how about "Immelman Marcos?"
In regard to Gary Player leaving a supportive and encouraging voice mail for Trevor Immelman, I believe Player left a similar note for Seve Ballesteros in 1980 and Ballesteros did the same for Olazabal in 1994, if memory serves.
OH, please do blog it! Just dropped in from planting petunias - who is winning? Don't follow golf or tournaments, is it over today or does go on past today?
Another solid stroke by Immelman for bogey at 12. His lead is down to three over Snedeker, whose 35 foot birdie putt drew such applause from Jane, and Flesch.
Elliott's assignment for Steve: Get to the clubhouse at 280, 8-under par.
The approach to 13 looks like a really tough shot, since with that hole location you can't miss left or right. But he hit a great recovery shot to give himself a chance for par.
Another great wedge shot from Immelman at 13. He should be back to 10-under and a four or five shot lead.
Five ahead and his competitors struggling. The expectations placed on Immelman were quite high when he turned professional, he'd won the US Public Links and reached the final of the British Amateur as a teenager, and it is quite impressive to see him live up to them. Well done.
Gary Player is absolutely thrilled. And I'm thrilled for Immelman; he really handled himself well.
Ann we could go to "Hillary's gaffe" at 8:00 - since it doesn't seem to have a lot of action. TM is putting new threads up so fast we will probably be off the page by the time the compassion forum is over.
Immelman just went into the water. Hold on to your hats.
Immelman should be able to get out 16 with a double bogey. Snedeker is in a bad spot so he'll probably be four ahead after this hole. As long as Tiger doesn't hole out for two on 18, Trevor should be fine.
Why does Rolex use footage that looks like it's from competition (I think it's from the British Open, possibly from the practice rounds) in most of it's men's golf commercials and then have commercials with Annika Sorenstam and Lorena Ochoa, who won the LPGA's Corona Championship by 11 shots today, that do not have any tournament action? For comparison, Rolex's Mickelson ad features Masters tournament footage.
The Ochoa Rolex commercial is especially sappy and is even worse than Rolex's Australian Open Federer ad. Kia is the major sponsor of that grand slam event so it's logo appears throughout the ad. The juxtaposition seems quite odd to me. Hardly synergistic marketing.
" After a weekend spent making direct appeals to gun owners and church goers, Hillary Clinton said Sunday a query about the last time she fired a gun or attended church services "is not a relevant question in this debate” over Barack Obama’s recent comments on small town Americans."
“We can answer that some other time,” Clinton said at a press conference held in a working class neighborhood here. “This is about what people feel is being said about them. I went to church on Easter. I mean, so?”
I really enjoyed liveblogging with you, Ann, and glasater over the past few days and I look forward to the debate on Wednesday. I hope there is not a West Coast tape delay.
Have fun with the Compassion Forum. I'm sorry I can not take part along with all of you.
perhaps more banjo and bagpipes, or Oboe and accordion?

Only fifteen minutes until the world's number one player takes the tee in his quest for a 14th major championship victory.
As I mentioned on the other thread, Woods has not won a major when trailing entering the final round.

The 72nd Masters weather forecast is 66F but it feels like 60F.
Winds are: WNW 15-25 mph. Its going to be long pants and windbreakers today.
The colorful Ian Poulter has a clothing line coming out in July of this year... believe it or not!!
Elliott, I thought Jillian should of won Project Runway, too. I love that show.
Posted by: Ann | April 13, 2008 at 02:22 PM
Tiger is paired with Stuart Cink. In their last 4 pairings together, Tiger has gone on to win the tournament.
Posted by: Jane | April 13, 2008 at 02:24 PM
Okay, prediction time:
[checks to make sure Steve Flesch hasn't doubled the first hole]
I'm going with Steve Flesch, whose final round 70 will give him a one stroke victory. Or he'll win on the third playoff hole.
Posted by: Elliott | April 13, 2008 at 02:31 PM
Ann and Jane present and accounted for. Excellent.
Anyone else who would like to please join in.
Posted by: Elliott | April 13, 2008 at 02:33 PM
As perusal of the archives would show, my predictions are almost never right.
But the leaders haven't started well and could both bogey the first hole.
Posted by: Elliott | April 13, 2008 at 02:38 PM
I say Tiger in a historic HISTORIC finish.
Of course I'm full of wishful thinking.
Posted by: Jane | April 13, 2008 at 02:42 PM
Trivia question of the day: Who is the last unmarried player, aside from Tiger, to win the Masters? To win a major (if different)?
Posted by: Elliott | April 13, 2008 at 02:44 PM
Isn't it annoying how they'll show the action out of sequence and we'll see player B putt and we'll see player A's ball-marker near the hole and then they'll show player A miss his putt as if we couldn't possibly have noticed that he's already missed it?

Snedeker looks ridiculous but boy what a put.
The stripes on his shirt match his shoes. How cute. Not.
That visor has to go.
COME ON TIGER! He should of worn red today.
Posted by: Ann | April 13, 2008 at 03:12 PM
The guy that wears the worst thing that goes with the Masters green jacket usually wins. So Steve Flesch has a good chance at winning, today. :)
Posted by: Ann | April 13, 2008 at 03:20 PM
I think Nike and Tiger consider that shirt red.

Tiger is wearing red on my TV
Posted by: Jane | April 13, 2008 at 03:51 PM
The eleventh and twelfth holes look particularly difficult today.
Bobby Clampett said there has not been a birdie at the eleventh today and both Mickelson and Singh misjudged the wind at the twelfth.
Posted by: Elliott | April 13, 2008 at 04:06 PM
Well, well, well. Immelman has rebounded nicely from his ragged start. If he makes his short birdie putt on the seventh, he'll likely extend his lead to four strokes (and maybe five).
Posted by: Elliott | April 13, 2008 at 04:14 PM
Tiger's shirt on HD TV looks hot pink. Maybe it is the new Nike red.
Anyways, the gods seem to like Cleopatra Immelman, today.
Posted by: Ann | April 13, 2008 at 04:20 PM
I believe that Immelmen is introducing his new clothes line this week Ann. Now that's incentive for a win!

Posted by: Elliott | April 13, 2008 at 04:35 PM
Back-to-back birdies for Phil. He must like Indian food.
That stat about married players bodes ill for Snedeker.
Posted by: Elliott | April 13, 2008 at 04:44 PM
I can't look at his feet. His eyes have me hypnotized. :)
Posted by: Ann | April 13, 2008 at 04:47 PM
On the internet coverage, Phil is about to go for the fifteenth. Bones does not look happy.
It's aloft, the streaming video freezes, and after an interminable wait...it's in the bleachers. Home run.
Meanwhile, Andres Romero hit his second shot on the eleventh into the bushes to the left of the pond.
Posted by: Elliott | April 13, 2008 at 04:51 PM
Immelman: Runner-up at US Junior (1997? to Jason Allred at Aronomink.) I just have to say it before Nantz does.
Posted by: Elliott | April 13, 2008 at 04:52 PM
In regard to Gary Player leaving a supportive and encouraging voice mail for Trevor Immelman, I believe Player left a similar note for Seve Ballesteros in 1980 and Ballesteros did the same for Olazabal in 1994, if memory serves.

Tiger just made his putt for birdie on 11. Live on the internet, delayed on TV.
Posted by: Elliott | April 13, 2008 at 05:15 PM
I must say Phil Nipples Mickelson is looking very handsome and well dressed today.
Posted by: Ann | April 13, 2008 at 05:16 PM
It had to be 65 feet. He only trails by five now.
Posted by: Elliott | April 13, 2008 at 05:16 PM
I can't look at his feet. His eyes have me hypnotized. :)
Me too Ann.
Tiger just made his putt for birdie on 11. Live on the internet, delayed on TV.
I was wondering how you were seeing things in the early rounds before my coverage was on.
I should have guessed. And in Amen Corner to boot.
Posted by: Jane | April 13, 2008 at 05:17 PM
Wow. Tiger is BACK on the eleventh hole.

Posted by: Jane | April 13, 2008 at 05:20 PM
Sure, but I might be laughing to hard to type. ;)
Posted by: Ann | April 13, 2008 at 05:24 PM
Here's a good example of the coverage: On TV they showed Phil's birdie putt on 15, while he was looking at his putt from the back of the green on 16.
Posted by: Elliott | April 13, 2008 at 05:24 PM
OH, please do blog it! Just dropped in from planting petunias - who is winning? Don't follow golf or tournaments, is it over today or does go on past today?

Posted by: Elliott | April 13, 2008 at 05:28 PM
Oh dear.
Posted by: Elliott | April 13, 2008 at 05:29 PM
It's still Immelmen Centralcal, and he's going to have to fall apart to lose it at this point, pretty much.
Ann, I can only blog snark since Elliott's eloquence entered the scene. So "laughing too hard" is right up my alley.
Posted by: Jane | April 13, 2008 at 05:30 PM
ImmelmAn.
His is a name we will all remember.
Posted by: Jane | April 13, 2008 at 05:31 PM
Trevor Immelman leads by two over Steve Flesch and by four over Brandt Snedeker and Tiger Woods with eight holes left.
But Flesch will probably make a double bogey on 12, so Immelman is in pretty good shape.

I guess I conceded Tiger's birdie on 13 while he was still on 12. Finally, a prediction that will come true!
Great par putt on 11 by Immelman.
Posted by: Elliott | April 13, 2008 at 05:44 PM

Another solid stroke by Immelman for bogey at 12. His lead is down to three over Snedeker, whose 35 foot birdie putt drew such applause from Jane, and Flesch.
Elliott's assignment for Steve: Get to the clubhouse at 280, 8-under par.
Posted by: Elliott | April 13, 2008 at 05:57 PM
This is shaping up to be an exciting finish. Can't ask for more than that.
Posted by: Elliott | April 13, 2008 at 06:02 PM
How can Snedeker do that twice in a row?
Posted by: Ann | April 13, 2008 at 06:06 PM
The approach to 13 looks like a really tough shot, since with that hole location you can't miss left or right. But he hit a great recovery shot to give himself a chance for par.
Another great wedge shot from Immelman at 13. He should be back to 10-under and a four or five shot lead.
Posted by: Elliott | April 13, 2008 at 06:11 PM
Oh, Ann, don't envy. Your will be coming to full glorious bloom, when mine will be frying and dying in the summer heat!
Is Tiger out of the running? Are you guys rooting for Trevor? The golf course for The Masters is beautiful and so serene.

It's really Immelman's at this point. And very well deserved.

I think that Immelman will become the first player in his 20s to win a major since Ben Curtis.
Posted by: Elliott | April 13, 2008 at 06:44 PM
Gary Player is absolutely thrilled. And I'm thrilled for Immelman; he really handled himself well.
Ann we could go to "Hillary's gaffe" at 8:00 - since it doesn't seem to have a lot of action. TM is putting new threads up so fast we will probably be off the page by the time the compassion forum is over.
Immelman just went into the water. Hold on to your hats.
Posted by: Jane | April 13, 2008 at 06:49 PM
Immelman should be able to get out 16 with a double bogey. Snedeker is in a bad spot so he'll probably be four ahead after this hole. As long as Tiger doesn't hole out for two on 18, Trevor should be fine.
Posted by: Elliott | April 13, 2008 at 06:53 PM
"Hillary's gaffe" at 8:00 How fitting. Roger on that!
Hold on to your hat.....now he is in the bunker.
Posted by: Ann | April 13, 2008 at 07:06 PM
Another first: Immelman is going to be the first of the "young guns" of men's golf featured in Rolex's advertising to win a major.
Posted by: Elliott | April 13, 2008 at 07:12 PM
Elliott, who is the Plame relative?
Posted by: Jane | April 13, 2008 at 07:14 PM
How fun is this win! Imagine what he must be feeling.
Posted by: Jane | April 13, 2008 at 07:23 PM

A prelude for tonight: LOL
" After a weekend spent making direct appeals to gun owners and church goers, Hillary Clinton said Sunday a query about the last time she fired a gun or attended church services "is not a relevant question in this debate” over Barack Obama’s recent comments on small town Americans."
