I dismiss this poll showing McCain-Rice beating Obama-Clinton in New York for reasons given here; basically, a Rice nomination re-opens the entire pre-war intelligence and planning can of worms and keeps alive topics such as the Yoo memo on torture.
Richilieu of the Weekly Standard made that point and more:
4) Condi is a policy person, not a candidate type professional pol. Beware first timers playing in the Workd Series.
If you like Rice, what about Heather Wilson of New Mexico, who gets mentioned as a McCain pick? Rhodes Scholar, Air Force officer, National Security Council, head of a state agency in New Mexico, Congress - my goodness, she is nearly as qualified as Hillary or Obama.
Wilson is contesting for the Republican Senate nomination and there is a mini sex scandal in her past, associated with her hubby.
The gist is that in 1993 a minor filed a police report against her husband, the minor's attorney, alleging inappropriate physical contact. No action was taken, but Ms. Wilson had the file buried in 1995 when she took over the relevant state agency.
Here is a link to the what may be the report, which includes this:
I spoke to ****. He told me Jay Hone is his lawyer. He has him because he has no parent or guardian. He now lives at a group home. And "Jay looks after my best interests in court," **** said. That night Jay asked him up and went to his house. They had a pizza and a "movie" to watch. There was nobody else in the house. Jay's wife was out of town and his son wasn't home. While they were watching the movie **** said he had to go to the bathroom. Returning back to the livingroom, as he was sitting back down, **** said, Jay "grabbed" or "touched" his butt. He yelled, "Hey", at Jay, "What are you doing?" Jay told him he was just reaching for another slice of Pizza. Afterwards nothing else happened. Jay took him back to the group home.
Mr. **** advised me that Jay Hone does take him to places to eat on a regular basis. Mr. Hone does it to ask how he is doing, as far as getting along with people, Mr. **** said. He also told me since that night there has been no difference in how Jay treats him. "He's still the same." He told me he does not want Mr. Hone arrested and that he just wanted to talk to somebody about it.
So, Jay Hone is an awful sexual predator and his wife is his enabler. Or, Jay Hone was caught up in a shakedown scam. Or, this was an honest misunderstanding.
I doubt that any new information will be forthcoming on this, although if Ms. Wilson runs for VP the then-minor will probably re-surface.
Ms. Wilson is also at the "center" of the US Attorney "scandal" as well. Or something. I know I've read her name at Emptywheel's for something, but I know it can't be good.

Neither Rice nor Wilson will be the choice.

I wouldn't dismiss the Marist/NBC poll out of hand. The CW is faulty this year just about everywhere and even though Condi is vulnerable to attack, the GOP can start firing back with the sort of identity stuff the Dems want.
I'm a big fan of Heather, but Condi is a two-fer. I want to win worse than lose with "honor." And get a couple more Ruth Bader G's on the SCOTUS.

Speaking of ridiculous, Rather was unable to find a sufficiently insane judge to prevail on his suit against CBS.

David Brock, Dems plan $40M hit on McCain
"The ad [titled "McSame"] features President Bush's head cut and pasted onto McCain's shoulders, as a narrator intones that their policies on a range of issues are "McSame."
"We need a new direction, not the McSame old thing," the narrator concludes.
"It tested off-the-charts well," said Brock, referring to his group's research into viewers' reactions to the ad.
............................................
Anyone from the Bush years would feed the McSame narrative.

Best VP candidate for McCain is Mitt Romney. He's acceptable to conservatives, apparently willing to change his beliefs when necessary, and has clear strengths on economic and health policy -- areas where McCain is weak.
Condi is a bad, bad choice -- particularly when all the evidence is that she is not a good manager, and links McCain to a certain failed administration that hasn't gone away yet like it should have 4 or so years ago.

I've posted this on other blogs, and feel its something to think about. Theres a particular person who is not often mentioned who I think may just make an excellent VP nominee for McCain. That person: Elizabeth Dole.
Think about this:
First, as a woman, she would be a "breakthrough" candidate, yet as an establishment Republican figure, she would be seen as "safe."
Second, she has a remarkable amount of legislative and executive experience: she has served in the cabinets of both Reagan and Bush 41, served as president of the American Red Cross during the '90s, briefly ran for president in 2000, and has been in the U.S. Senate since 2003.
Third, as a woman, she could attract centrist and even liberal voters, and many female voters accross the spectrum (especially if Hillary doesnt get the Dem. nomination), yet Dole has a strongly conservative record that could placate that wing of the party. (She has an American Conservative Union rating for 1996 of 96%, and an ACU lifetime rating of 91%, and has been mentioned as one of the 10 most conservative members of the Senate.)
Fourth, as Secretary of Trasnportation under Reagan, she was even in charge of one of the branches of the the U.S. military (the US Coast Guard, which was under that department at that time).
Fifth, she has shown how appealing and articulate she can be as a speaker in '96 when she spoke in support of her husband's nomination.
The only down side is her age, since she is the same age as McCain. But, as I've written elsewhere, her positives should make her not so easily dismissed.

I can't get behind Dole. She ran an absolutely abysmal campaign last time around.

"apparently willing to change his beliefs when necessary"
Somebody alert the Democrats!
Posted by: Sweetie | April 10, 2008 at 04:35 PM
I'm no fan of Dole either. I think the choice of Romney would assure a Democratic victory.
I'm afraid I don't have much confidence that McCain will choose wisely--and by "wisely" I mean a candidate who will help him in the election.

Michael Steele still is the best VP for McCain IMHO.

Does Rhodes Scholar still mean anything, really?
Every Rhode scholar pol I can remember seems to be a pompous ass and a liar.

Wilson's done. She admitted lifting the file on the incident. What bothers me is the revelation about the Soros McSame hit on McCain.
An aggressively well funded "McSame" branding of McCain could prove lethal to his prospects. Like B41, he is easily portrayed as a nice old dude who is hopelessly out of touch.. hopelessly unfit to represent younger interests in a modern era. McSame is the new Mr. Nowhere Man as far as "now" is concerned.
And they can make it stick should this election morph into a generational referendum on Country Club Republicans, glorifying grandpa and the beehives of old. If so, McCain's a dead man walking. A "hairspray politician" will have a tough time getting elected president in this era of tattoos and body piercings.
That said, "Heavy Metal John" can win this thing. But he'll need to stop acting like a wuss playing parlor games.
