Obama, the Glib Lib, gave a fine speech about his patriotism so Joe Klein is back in love.
Michael Goldfarb of The Weekly Standard snarks quite nicely and I won't spoil his punchline. However, I have to seize on this from Obama:
I love this country not because it’s perfect, but because we’ve always been able to move it closer to perfection.
Did I tell you or did I tell you? Here is how I rationalized Michelle Obama's lack of pride in America a few weeks back:
Well, lefties haven't been proud of this country since we stole it from the
IndiansNative Americans, so imagine my non-surprise. Just don't question their patriotism! They love America for what it might become, someday, if only the Great Unwashed would heed them. But pride?
Oh, well. Let's re-run Obama's Big Finish:
That is the country I love. That is the promise of America. And in this election, if we can shed our cynicism and our doubts and our fears; if we remember that we rise or fall as one people, and that we can meet any challenge that comes our way if we meet it together, then I believe that this generation will do its part to perfect our union and keep our promise alive in the twenty-first century. Good night, God Bless, and as they say here in Butte, “tap ‘er light.”
I suggest a revision to John Kennedy's Inaugural Address:
"We shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe, in order to assure the survival and the success of
libertynational health care."
Oh, I am creeping up on Mr. Goldfarb's quip. Not gonna do it!
But a closing thought - the Glib Lib has a well-deserved rep for delivering a fine speech. Will that answer any lingering doubts, or do folks actually expect deeds to match the words? An example of appropriate deeds would include having pointed out to one's minister, during a twenty year association, that he was a raving loon promoting hatred of America (and a Marine Corps volunteer). Just for example. Well, Joe Klein is paid to write, so for him, talk is not cheap.
TAP A KEG? "Tap 'er light" is explained here:
When miners want to dig new tunnels into the solid rock of The Richest Hill on Earth, they bore small holes into the rock face and then fill them with sticks of dynamite. They then tap the sticks into place using a long rod, hence the phrase “tap ‘er light”. In short, it means be careful that you don’t blow us all up.
Interesting that Obama is alluding to the possibility of a sudden, devastating explosion during his campaign. More Wright revelations? Tony Rezko? Michelle has freed herself from the duct tape? Keep Hill Alive!
More likely, he's alluding to the fact that he hasn't got a goddamn hint what "tap'er light" means, and is reading it from a script.

For the left, America apparently is always an abstract idea, a destination, a goal. It's never a real nation, here right now. It's a work in progress with the work never done, the mission never accomplished.
More government, more legislation, more policies.
This - this belief that there is some eschatological or final goal that must be met - is the real similarity between liberalism and fascism that Goldberg talks about. That the nation must have an ultimate national goal and that our roles in it is to serve a state that will accomplish that goal.
Very dangerous.
No thanks, I'll pass.

So which staff member will get the blame for putting this insanity into Barack's mouth?

Didn't Al Franken say that liberals love America like parents loves their child, i.e., in spite of his faults, and wingers love America like a child loves his parents, i.e., ignorant of their faults.
Oh, and BHO hates America. Didn't you know that?

Kim, I remember seeing a comment on NR years ago to the effect that if a man subjected his wife to the relentless criticism that progressives subject the United States, no one would be surprised if the woman divorced him.
Sara - and he goes on to say he's well-traveled, and in fact visited Pakistan once in college. I don't think he wants "time spent in Asia" to become a point of comparison in the fall campaign.

For more on Obama's connections to communism,
Here is a Presto Pundit Article
"There's a big mystery at the heart of Barack Obama's Dreams For My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance. What was Barack Obama doing seeking out Marxist professors in college? Why did Obama choose a Communist Party USA member as his socio- political counselor in high school? Why was he spending his time studying neocolonialism and the writings of Frantz Fanon, the pro-violence author of "the Communist Manifesto of neocolonialsm", in college? Why did he take time out from his studies at Columbia to attend socialist conferences at Cooper Union?"
For those who remember John Kerry, he came from much the same background in Communism.

“tap ‘er light”?
Word in the Navy was "bang 'er hard"
or "take her deep".
Of course being a nuke, we would say in an emergency
"yank the rods" "emergency power"

How Hispanics really feel feel about blacks.
Get this: the Hispanic woman involved was an Obama delegate. Go figure.
You know it is just getting stranger and stranger. I can't keep up. And it is only April. I have at least 10X as much material as I can use each day.

M Simon, if you've got a big rod, you better start out easy, with a lot of grease.
where I've seen progress made for working families who need leaders who are willing to stand up and fight for them.
Did he hire Bob Schrum? Or is it just impossible for a Democrat to talk about freedom anymore?
