A Pro-Life Argument You Don't Often Hear

While noodling about something else I noticed that by the standards of the early 60's Obama's mother was a gal in trouble when she got married:

Six months after they wed, another letter arrived in Kenya, announcing the birth of Barack Hussein Obama, born Aug. 4, 1961.

Since you ask, abortion was only legalized in Hawaii in 1970, although apparently illegal abortions were common.

It's not a pro-life argument you hear too often.  Obama ought to hold himself up as an example of the merits of "safe, legal, and rare".  As if.

IMAGINE MY SURPRISE:  Can't really glean the "gal in trouble" detail from the Times coverage of the early Obama years.

Clarice, it says the source is "First in His Class" which is the entirely respectable David Maraniss biography. I have the book so I skimmed that section - this excerpt looks to be a condensation of sorts, but nothing appears to be factually different from the Maraniss account.

Boy, the Blythe apple did not fall far from the tree, despite the fact that Clinton never knew his natural father. Old W. J. Blythe was quite the ladies' man, according to Maraniss.

Actually, Obama's parents were "married", not married, since his father was already married. Hawaii, unlike some Muslim countries, did not allow polygamy back then. (And still doesn't, though the Hawaii courts may change that some time in the future.)

That Barack Obama, Jr. was illegitimate says nothing about him, but does say something about Barack Obama, Sr. And it makes it even more puzzling that junior seems to worship senior's memory.

IMO - he was too young to understand and internalize being abandoned by his father - hence the romanticization. He was old enough to recognize his mother's abandonment and TWP Granny had a full plate.
