As Mickey Kaus almost said, "You can't drill your way out of this problem". John Edwards seems to have been caught shortening the VP short list.

I was going to say it couldn't happen to a more deserving person, but than I remembered seeing on of those Poll Questions in the upper right corner of the screen---"Should Michelle Obama be worried about Barack's friendship with____________? So it may be possible that it could happen to a even more deserving person.
Posted by: Pagar | July 22, 2008 at 07:27 PM
If the NE is to be believed, this was a well-planned and well-staffed sting operation that, hilariously, had Edwards running around the basement of the Hilton like a trapped rat. Where are the pictures?
Posted by: Blenheim | July 22, 2008 at 07:27 PM
According to the NE: "The former senator attended a press event Monday afternoon with L.A. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa on the topic of how to combat homelessness."
Mr. Edwards might discover his own expertise on the plight of the homeless to truly be of some use to him now.
Funny how things work out that way.

You can't drill your way out of this problem".
No, but sometimes you can drill your way into a problem.
So long, Senator. Good luck with that law career.
You'll need it.
Posted by: SteveMG | July 22, 2008 at 08:09 PM
Ah, yes. Another UNC law grad, joining the firm with Nifong. But, still, is there not a special place in Hell for someone who trades on his dead child and his cancer-stricken wife while boffing his staff? (I credit Opus with the use of the word "boff.")

His rod and his staff comforted him.

His big ol' house isn't going to be nearly big enough now.
But hey, what a caring man to visit his staffer's love child. (perhaps it was the blamed staffer that set this up)

Since I assume this thread will be dedicated to ridicule, it seems like a good spot for my favorite bit from the Pew Poll that everyone was talking about earlier:
Somehow "Higher education has the opposite effect on Democrats" was like a direct hit to the funny bone.Posted by: JM Hanes | July 22, 2008 at 08:32 PM
Too funny, JMH
Posted by: BobS | July 22, 2008 at 08:39 PM
The training in logic did not take, they are Democrats, who as we know, are the least discerning beings on the planet.

Speaking of ridicule, I heard on the radio driving home that Congressman Robert Wexler (D-FL) does not have a residence in Florida. He uses his Mother-In-Laws address. He has a home in Maryland and D.C. Can't wait to see his tax return. :) Wonder if the people in his district will care that he doesn't really live in Florida. Probably not, but his tax return will be interesting.
What did the Democrats say about being the most ethical...blah,blah in 2006. :)
Posted by: Ann | July 22, 2008 at 08:53 PM
Waxman is highly partisan Dem. He was very uncomfortable answering questions.
Posted by: BobS | July 22, 2008 at 09:01 PM
Even thoug I don't like Wexler, -I do not like when TV crews- in this case Bill O'Riellys- jump someone unknowingly. Am I wrong about this?
Posted by: BobS | July 22, 2008 at 09:03 PM
JMH: additional ironies abound. Remember Villaraigosa having the affair with the news reporter? I found the following on wiki:
"The mayor, who is widely considered to have designs on higher office, has been dogged by rumors of marital infidelity for years. In 1994, while Corina was undergoing treatment for thyroid cancer, Villaraigosa left town for a few days (with no notice) with a friend's wife after his victory in the state Assembly election, resulting in Corina filing for divorce the day after the election.[11][3] The couple reconciled two years later."
Message to polical wives: DON'T GET CANCER!!!
(I double-dog denounce myself for typing that).

TM's posting so much I can't keep up with comments
Posted by: BobS | July 22, 2008 at 09:06 PM
Ann:
Wexler is one of those useful idiots who makes a perfect political lackey. He'll say anything for the cause, and if you have to throw him under the bus it's not exactly a loss. You reward him with your (private) confidence, along with an officious title, and never give him signing privileges anywhere.
Posted by: JM Hanes | July 22, 2008 at 09:12 PM
His rod and his staff comforted him.
Okay, new thread, we can't top that one.

LOL
Do you think RW has anything to do with either story?

If anyone is still reading this thread - I recommend Roger L. Simon on John and Rielle.

John Edwards made millions as a blood-sucking ambulance chaser, then sought to defraud the rest of the country.
Posted by: BobS | July 22, 2008 at 09:42 PM
It is a true pity that the Reps have fielded no one against Wexler--I think this would be a good year to oust him.
Posted by: clarice | July 22, 2008 at 09:43 PM
You know, I'm one of those people who don't get all morally outraged about people having affairs - probably because it appears at least 50% of married people have them. But there is something really really ugly about sleeping around when your wife has been spending her last days on earth furthering your ambitions.
Posted by: Jane | July 22, 2008 at 09:43 PM
Exactly,Jane.
Posted by: clarice | July 22, 2008 at 09:47 PM
And what is it with this guy and his inducing women in their 40's to bear his children--? Weird.
Posted by: clarice | July 22, 2008 at 09:52 PM
Gay? Not exactly, though the commonest picture of Rielle Hunter (variations fill most of the first page of a Google Image search) has a disturbing resemblance to David Spade.
Posted by: Dr. Weevil | July 22, 2008 at 09:56 PM
I take back what I said--I just found out that Wexler DOES have an opponent..Great. I think he should be out.
Posted by: clarice | July 22, 2008 at 09:57 PM
He does, Clarice? Goood. No wonder Wexler was a bumbling idiot when he was approached today. The RNC needs to after that seat ane pour some cash in there.
Posted by: BobS | July 22, 2008 at 10:00 PM
And in the adjoining district Lt Col Allen West (my fav) is running for office against another empty suit.
Posted by: clarice | July 22, 2008 at 10:02 PM
Rielle is actually quite attractive--most of the unflattering pics (like today's in NE) are from the last month of her pregnancy ..
Posted by: clarice | July 22, 2008 at 10:03 PM
Well the NE shot is certainly unflattering. Ms. Hunter appears more attractice in a Google image.
Posted by: BobS | July 22, 2008 at 10:06 PM
Waxman is highly partisan Dem. He was very uncomfortable answering questions.
Good. He should be because he never misses an opportunity for moral preening spittle outrage.
So, how long has he been fibbing to his constituents?

Lesley: I'm double dog denouncing myself in solidarity!
Don't know who linked to Roger Simon, but this comparison with the NE has got to hurt: "In general, these days they’re vastly more reliable than The New York Times."
Alas, poor Mickey! Kaus' Love Boat finally docks and he's not on the pier.
Posted by: JM Hanes | July 22, 2008 at 10:28 PM
JMH, as usual you are laser-like in your comparisons! Glenn Close and Rielle! LOL! or rather, frightening!
Posted by: centralcal | July 22, 2008 at 10:30 PM
So I'm guessing there is video and still of last night at the Hilton and the NE is awaiting John's emphatic denial to roll hem out for maximum fanfare.
Posted by: Topsecretk9 | July 22, 2008 at 11:00 PM
If there is a video and still--and he'd sure know that--he's not denying anything.
Posted by: clarice | July 22, 2008 at 11:04 PM
Tops,
How can we find out if Wexler has Florida license plates on his car in Maryland?
By the way, it seems Larwyn had the scoop. Go Larwyn!

He'll probably announce that he and Elizabeth have enrolled in counseling, ask the press to respect their privacy -- out of consideration for his wife.

JM Hanes, was there much wailing in Winston over today's Wachovia announcement? Do they want their bank back?
Posted by: Ralph L | July 22, 2008 at 11:57 PM
Ralph:
I'm afraid I can't pass along much Wachovia scoop. I probably spend more time with you guys in here than I do socializing in Winston -- in fact, I never got around to telling most of the folks I used to know that I moved back town. Well, not exactly town, more like a secret bunker in the country.
Posted by: JM Hanes | July 23, 2008 at 12:57 AM
The laugh riot continues:
Over at ABC, here's how they headline the Couric Interview "Obama: Surge Doesn't Meet Long-Term Goals." Apparently they rethought their original effort somewhere along the way. Gateway Pundit has the screenshot: "Obama: The Surge Was A Bad Strategy."
Meanwhile, Politico adds this gem on the Euro front:
Let's hope things turn out as well this time as they did last time, no?My favorite tidbit has disappeared beneath the surface of my browser history, alas, but the new improved Obama venue in Berlin is also the well known home of some sort of pyrotechnic Love Fest, which seems all too appropriate. But never mind, the link would have exceeded my apparent captcha limit anyway.
