I'm shocked and lock-jawed. Until we invented vaccines and antibiotics, every year after the Fourth there was an epidemic of deaths from tetanus. The instigating microbe would be driven under the skin from firecracker mishaps and if it took aholt, death struck like a bolt.

Clarice-just finished KOSOVO. I cannot explain what it meant to me. My paternal grandparents emigrated from Yugoslavia, in 1919-my grandfather came here running from the facists(they just told me hush when I asked why as a little girl) and my Baba followed shortly after(it was an arranged marriage by his parents-they had 3-4 girls from neighboring farms come cook and clean for them for a few weeks each and picked the best-my Baba-gave her a ticket on a boat to Galveston, Texas where Grandpa Chris picked her up; after the 6 weeks in isolation, married and had 6 children). When,as a young adult, I expressed a desire to see her homeland(which would be around the time of your trip)-she went into a Serbian rant which was
interpretted for me as"Never go there-there are evil people, still, in the soil of my birth."She stopped going to the Serbian Orthodox church and went to the Greek Orthodox because communists, she believed, ruled the church.I do wish, I could have seen the church in the country you imagined to be Serbian, though, the church in Galveston where I received my first communion is still breathtaking in it's simplicity. Any hoo- it's was a treat to be a mental traveler today-your stories always help the reader to understand your subject. And today, I learned about the place my Baba was so happy to leave. She became a naturalized citizen in 1930 and although she preferred to read her Bible in
Serbian until the day she died, she thanked God in English for her opportunity to live free in America.

I have no idea whether the notion that B57O is not a natural born US citizen will turn out to be true. glasater in re: Spengler. I'm not exactly sure what his point was with the article. He seemed to use up a lot of space to say, "Americans have to change their lives."
Nor am I sure his prescription would do all that much-the cap gains tax isn't going to get eliminated, the 401k per-tax limit isn't going to 100k, the Fed has a dual role of domestic price stability and domestic full employment (so seeing house and auto prices declining sharply would mean the Fed has to keep rates low until they find a bottom), and I'm not sure any SWFs would want to buy US banks [and many have substantial investments in US banks anyway]. Here is a great quote:
Barack Obama says, "This is the greatest country in the world and I cannot wait to begin remaking it." I'm not interested in the remaking of America, although I would like a couple of these recent laws to be repealed. Basically I came to America because in many ways it is the last unwrecked part of the Western world. I tend to take the view that if it ain't broke, don't get Barack Obama to fix it.

I saw something (Ace I think) about BHO now claiming he isn't a "flip-flopper" and everything he has been saying is consistent with previous statements, and he blamed the whole thing on reporters. Good grief.
Also noticed a blurb at CNN about BHO having trouble with Clinton voters, and it has gotten worse, not better. I'll save the internals for Rick, but it looks like another data point for what he was saying in a previous thread about "the muddle" not buying.

Rich--The Spengler article is of course one man's 'take' on our economic situation but contained some ideas that were interesting.
There have been some talk that the markets are going into the tank because of an impending Barack Obama presidency--especially if he raises taxes as he says he will do. That's one area where he has definitely not tacked to the center--much to the markets concern.
Posted by: glasater | July 05, 2008 at 10:25 PM
Reasonable thoughts from someone named
"Spengler" the German philosopher who was like Mark Steyn, without the humor. Doesn't the real issue lie with the eighteen
consecutive monthes of Fed rate increases
which precipitated the Fed meltdown, not the two or three almost lackadaisacal Fed cuts. Would'nt further Fed rate hikes, crack the allready shaky financialfoundation
; do we really want to relive 1979-81 all over again. He doesn't really think that will decrease oil prices significantly, and that tradeoff is worth more monetary pain
inflicted on the consumer.

glasater-
Spengler isn't the only one with that take. I just don't see how raising rates at this point would make a difference and cutting corporate taxes, eliminating the AMT, and making the Bush tax cuts permanent would be more effective.
Nor are his graphs all that helpful: oil (along with many other commodities and products [like aircraft]) is sold in dollars so with random starting and stopping using a lagged change I could show a strong or negative correlation to the trade weighted dollar index (as his second graph shows where nearly half the range is bouncing around +/- 10%). Goosed productivity numbers, a major part of the strength of the Euro (and the falling dollar index), isn't going to last (their baby boom started a few years later than ours and they work 10 fewer years) either. Also dollar-based inflation is creeping into the eurozone wage base, while euro strength is hitting them on their imports, exports, and their travel and tourism industry.
It seems odd to me that if investors were looking for an inflation hedge they would all pile into commodities, making them more expensive vs. the dollar, in turn making inflation worse. Also, if inflation were becoming a concern in the US, real estate would start ticking up because it too is an inflation hedge, much better than some paper in a brokers book.
Agreed that everyone seems to be running for the doors worried about an Obama presidency (with a democrat congress), but the Wily E Coyote paradigm that oil is floating on isn't going to last, which will spill over to the whole commodities complex.

By the way, 89's cheerful a recession's coming, run for your lives" new story, is kind of counteracted by David Leonhardt(the economic columnists summer fairwell entry; where he argues that the likely unemployment
spikjes we shall see into the fall, and next spring; are lagging indicators, long after the downturn. To balance it out, he had to add that this downturn is worse, because no one had a raise in this boom as opposed to the last one; which was based on those indispensable commodities of Pets.com

economic columnist; actually he's an import from Bloomberg is saying the GDP during the Clinton years was 3.7% on average over the 2.4% for the Bush years; does that seem right. They also got someone from the Tax Policy Center to state that McCain's tax cuts would cost 3.7 trillion whereas Obama's would cost only 2.7 trillion over 10 years.

One thing Spengler has very wrong is about retirement meaning, to Americans, 40 more hours of watching TV. Granted he may have been trying to be funny, but since it wasn't funny, I'm thinking he may believe it.
Maybe I run in different circles than he does, but I don't know anyone who retires nowadays and doesn't immediately take a different job. I don't know anyone who watches anywhere near that much TV. And I know some teenagers who don't watch *any* TV.

Tax Policy Center to state that McCain's tax cuts would cost 3.7 trillion whereas Obama's would cost only 2.7 trillion over 10 years.
Someone should remind Brookings that taxes are money that is skimmed off the top of commerce, a cost. Whereas tax cuts are the opposite, a savings.
Posted by: MikeS | July 06, 2008 at 12:04 AM
Forstmann, really seems to tend apocalyptically in his pronouncements. Back in the 80s, he had this Jeremiah complex about junk bonds and the Brexel crew; a flavor of which can be detected in the 1993
adaptation of "Barbarians at the Gate" where David Rasche, Mr. "Sledgehammer" was picked to play him, and it was an over the top performance; considering that Forstmann was supposedly making Burrough's point on excess leverage . I do recall that the supposed villains of the piece; Henry
Kravis, played by Jonathan Pryce, was given
less dramatic material, and the anti-hero F. Ross Johnson, played by James Garner, were almost equally matched; whereas as Fred Thompson's role as American Express's X's Jim Robinson was understated. One wonders what representations the Countrywide
and Ameriquest follies will spawn.
Speculation that Dodd, Conrad, et al will be excised like Bukharin & Zinoviev wouldn't surprise me. Interestingly only Penelope Spheeris off kilter BDS riven Enron film was really greenlit; not Kozlowki's Roman excess or the mysterious Tyco crew. Along with the very weak
Enronish 'dramedy' "Fun with Dick and Jane"

Not really. I'm thinking that Clinton came in at 3.1% and Bush has come in at 3.0%. Also, it never fails that the Tax Policy Center would call a tax cut a "cost" seeing as how all our money should belong to the government...

On this natural born thing. I realize Senators don't have to be natural born. But, don't you think that somewhere along the line Obama would have had to have shown the appropriate papers to somebody to run for office? Surely whereever it is that you sign up to run for President had a look at his papers? Wouldn't they?
Posted by: Pofarmer | July 06, 2008 at 09:40 AM
Pofarmer: I asked a similar question a few days ago. I don't think anybody knows how Presidential candidates "prove" they're qualified to run.
I think, more than likely, Obama meets the natural born requirement. But, I also believe the COLB being flashed about on the web is phony baloney and not proof of anything, except forgery.

Glasater,
If you would like to trace the path of the Obama Bear Market, this graph of the SP500 is a decent marker. Note that Clinton conceded on Saturday, June 7. The SP500 was at 1400 on June 6th and has made it to 1260 in one month.
Obama gets results!!
The nice thing about the Obama Bear Market is that its probable end point is fairly easy to determine. In fact, I'll risk a forecast of November 5th right now.
The Spengler and Forstman pieces are interesting in the "Chicken Little" sense but the sky really doesn't start falling until you see total tax receipts drop. The IRS provides annual data which can be supplemented by watching monthly SS stats. First-half year over year comparison of total employment taxes shows an increase of 3.3%. Nothing spectacular but not indicative of any large chunks of sky crashing to the ground. The world ending recession of '92-'93 (you do remember the end of the world in '92-'93? It was in all the papers...) which resulted in Bubba's ascendancy resulted in a YoY increase of .9% in employment tax receipts.

centralcal,
I think the idea is that it is in the parties' interests not to anyone who isn't Constitutionally qualified, so they will do due diligence accordingly. Dems have a hard time figuring out what's in their best interests apparently.

Just my luck. My source is in Italy. Harummph.
Is anyone else being told their comments must be screened? All I said was that the democrat convention is predicted to be a disaster.

FWIW, AJ makes a couple of claims that he doesn't back up convincingly:
Would have been more convincing if he'd provided a magnification himself. I couldn't see it when I zoomed in on the Decosta certificate. But maybe that's just my error.
Anyone recall Hawaii confirming that they sent a copy to Obama last summer? I don't remember seeing this. Seems like it would be a violation of confidentiality to provide this information.
He also does not address the blacked-out certificate number.

"The parties are supposed to vet their candidates."
Isn't that like hiring the fox to gaurd the henhouse?

Is There Legitimate Doubt About Obama's Eligibility to be President? [Andy McCarthy]
I had not caught up until today with this apparent controversy over whether the Hawaii birth certificate proffered by Obama's campaign is a forgery and whether there are legitimate questions about whether he was born in the United States — if he wasn't, he almost certainly would not be qualified under the Constitution and relevant immigration statutes to be president. Our Jim Geraghty seemed to pooh-pooh the birth certificate controversy about a week ago, but according to the above cited report (at a site called DougRoss@Journal) and a new one from Israeli Insider, there are new developments, and the Obama campaign appears to be stonewalling. Shouldn't it be a fairly easy matter to prove he was born in Hawaii if he really was? Why wouldn't Obama just end this quickly?
Is there anything to this?
ADDENDUM: I should add to the above that I am not a conspiracy theorist. My predisposition on the many stories floating around about Obama and his circle is to ignore them on the following theory: If there was really anything to this or that, the Clintons would have found it and gotten their media friends all over it. This story about Obama's eligibility puzzles me because (a) it is so basic, (b) it should be so easy to prove the relevant facts of his birth, (c) the Obama campaign's response to the story is bizarre, and (d) it seems to be getting worse rather than resolved.

"anyone can run for President on the Democrat ticket."
I don't believe that is true. One has to have the support of those who are against America to run as a Democrat. For example, look at Sen Leiberman, had all the right positions except he believed in America winning. He was thrown out of the Party, and the Democrats ran someone who said that America could not win. That was just for a Senate seat. Hard to imagine that they would
run someone who believed in America for President.

Maybe Obama was vetted by a different political party.
