Tom: Please tell me you said that with tongue in cheek!? There is no coherance in Obama's statements whatsoever about Iraq. His arguments and pronouncements have been about him being right. He has to maintain the image of superior intellect and moral superiority. That is why....not the facts of the matter...this issue means so much and journalists like Tapper al calling him on it. Hell, Katie Couric did for goodness sakes.

kim

Whoa, isn't Jake on to this lying sack of shit.

This guy's been lying all his life, but never had anybody check on him before.
=======================

kim

The comments on Jake's piece are fun, too. There is a Smith there who says that Obama has all the intellectual depth of a parking lot puddle.
===================================

Neo

At least Tapper, Couric, and Dickerson will be able to look in the mirror when the rest of the press corp is wondering just how such any inexperienced Jimmy Carter wanabee became POTUS.

bad

Doesn't matter

I bitterly and cynically concur. The "Bush years have sucked in everyway" narrative is alive and well and is accepted as conventional wisdom even by those who've made great personal and professional gains in the previous 7 1/2 years.

Neo

I'm still waiting for the press to catch on that Obama has out-Clintoned everybody by trangulating not just with others but, in a new modus operandi, Obama has now introduced the idea of triangulating with himself .. and the press is loving it.

BobS

bad: Keeping it mind how awful Carter was, at least he'd been a governor and had gone to Annappolis. Scary, huh.

kim,

Completely anecdotal of course, but I noticed that the proportion of Obama detractors to Obama supporters on the Tapper comment thread was much larger than it has been in threads past when Tapper has written something negative about Obama. That surprised me. The Obambots must be getting tired, or less plentiful, or both.

Neo

5.4 Quake

MikeS

So, now the question is will the U.S. also win the war in Afghanistan. Obama, Pelosi, and Reid all agree that Afghanistan is an important war that we have to win.

The question is, what do they mean by that.

GMax

They are for it before they switch and become against it?

bad

...the proportion of Obama detractors to Obama supporters on the Tapper comment thread was much larger than it has been in threads past when Tapper has written something negative about Obama.

Not to cling to bitterness and cynicality (?) but maybe more of us have discovered Tapper and more of them have written Tapper off as a wingnut so they don't bother to comment. I'm in a political funk so feel free to ignore me. I really, really, really want to be wrong.

Sara

We felt the quake here at my house. It isn't the biggest I've been through, but it was substantial. It was interesting to watch a sort of mini tidal wave roll the length of the pool.

Haley, my 2 year old Granddaughter was standing next to me when it started and her eyes got big as saucers and then she put her hand on the floor and commanded, "Stop!" and it did. We're calling her Super Tot and she claps. Such a ham.

No damage, except that when I opened the refrigerator, half the bottles rolled out on the floor and two broke making a heck of a mess.

Posted by: Porchlight | July 29, 2008 at 03:59 PM

Well, I think part of it is that the carp the Obambots have to shovel is so bad fewer and fewer are willing to show up to shovel it. The one new excuse I saw today over there as to why Obama was right even when he was wrong was...

But the violence did get worse after the surge started, so Obama was right when he said the surge would make things worse!!!!

The authors of this particular BS simply forget that Obama was wrong about the overall trajectory of the violence. Obama didn't claim the surge would make things temporarally worse, he claimed it would make things permenantly worse. It also of course ignors the general military principle that you have to fight a few important battles to win a war.

"The question is, what do they mean by that"

More Poppies for the 110th?

MTT

No, it doesn't matter.

There is nothing short of Barack Hussein Obama II saying that he wants Mexico to annex California and Texas, or that he unveils his plans for the USA's full integration into the EU that will turn off voters enough for him not to win.

And by the way, many of The Believers would be happy to be European (and or Mexican.)

I suppose the only thing to do now is to lay the framework for all of those "I told you so's" because I am not sure how much Internet time you will get once in the reeducation camps.

The election of Barack Hussein Obama II to become the POTUS is nothing short of absurd.

But it will happen.

It is happening.

Be Prepared!

Just sayin'.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) has split the Democratic front opposed to drilling with a plan that would open new areas for exploration.
Doesn’t Reid know that drilling for more American oil won’t lower gas prices today ? This compromise blows that story out of the water.

I suppose that Obama was for drilling all along .. LOL

Rick Ballard

Bad,

You might want to print this poll chart from '04. Comparing it to the current polling chart is refreshing.

I'm trying to determine what The One can do between now and November with that 30-50 yo F vote in order to prevent a McGovern type blowout. He just doesn't have the lipsucking "I feel your pain" appeal of Bubba. Maybe I'm wrong but this overexposure to his lack of charm has gotta have a lot of women thinking "Barrack Isuzu? No thanks." Between that and all the PUMA bites on his butt I don't see him moving the key demographic.

Neo
Our findings will probably surprise you. Like most analysts, we had assumed that radical views in the Muslim world were the outgrowth of a deeply held ideology, unshakeable without profound shifts in American foreign policy. We were wrong. American actions may inflame Muslim opinion. But the solutions that can cool that hostility aren’t always the ones you’d expect.
Porchlight
maybe more of us have discovered Tapper and more of them have written Tapper off as a wingnut so they don't bother to comment.

That could definitely be the case. It's hard to tell whether the readership is constant at a blog like Tapper's. But whatever the cause, it is pleasant to see a lessening in the "Obama '08!!!" type of comments.

royf

OT  but I thought some of you might enjoy this, this H.R 6615 was introduced today by my Representative Louis Gohmert.

HR 6615 IH

110th CONGRESS

2d Session

H. R. 6615

To provide for the transport of the enemy combatants detained in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba to Washington, DC, where the United States Supreme Court will be able to more effectively micromanage the detainees by holding them on the Supreme Court grounds, and for other purposes.

IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

July 24, 2008

Mr. GOHMERT introduced the following bill; which was referred to the Committee on Armed Services, and in addition to the Committee on the Judiciary, for a period to be subsequently determined by the Speaker, in each case for consideration of such provisions as fall within the jurisdiction of the committee concerned

A BILL

To provide for the transport of the enemy combatants detained in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba to Washington, DC, where the United States Supreme Court will be able to more effectively micromanage the detainees by holding them on the Supreme Court grounds, and for other purposes.

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled,

SECTION 1. SHORT TITLE.

This Act may be cited as the ‘Giving Inmate Terrorists More Opportunities (GITMO) Act of 2008’.

Got this from WWS:

Via the Hotline, a hopeful history lesson by Steve Lombardo at Pollster.com:

The trend from 1988 - 2004 shows that the GOP candidate tends to under-poll in the summer--with the exception [...] of the 2000 campaign. In each of the other four years, the Republican candidate had been polling significantly behind the Democrat at this point in the race. Each of those times, however, the Republican improved his position, gaining an average of 15 points relative to the Democrat.

This is the best news of the day.

PaulL

I sure hope McCain picks someone good for VP. I am afraid he'll pick a loser.

I said it before and I'll say it again: If he picks Sarah Palin, he'll win easily. The reasons against her given by the idiot experts are laughable: No one knows her. Alaska is only worth 3 electoral votes. She's too new.

The IOC had insisted the old committee be reinstated even though four members were kidnapped two years ago. Their fates remain unknown.

What the hell is it with internationalist bureaucracies? It's like they take all the oxygen out of the building and replace it with Stupid.

Best wishes to the Iraqi athletes, but it's just a shame that the 5 others were disqualified because the IOC are as dumb as they are corrupt.

Anyone see the letters PumaPAC has been collecting from Dem officials...

You owe it to yourself to go read 'em all.

Danube of Thought

I sure do like this tidbit from Pollster.com:

"The trend from 1988 - 2004 shows that the GOP candidate tends to under-poll in the summer--with the exception, as you can see below, of the 2000 campaign. In each of the other four [election] years, the Republican candidate had been polling significantly behind the Democrat at this point in the race. Each of those times, however, the Republican improved his position, gaining an average of 15 points relative to the Democrat."

Hit and Run, there are 300 plus No Obama blogs listed at noobamanetwork.com
Some of the bloggers and posters really, really, really do not like the candidate that thinks he has won.

There are a lot of them that have come to the realization that the uncontrollable caucus system really is the root of many of the Obama wins.

Hit

I read the letters from Democratic Leadership at your link and quite a few comments. The big question is will they stay that mad after the convention or will thay fall into line...

GMax

They are still mad after two months, what is going to happen at the convention to magically change that? Not allowing Hill's name to be placed into nomination? I see a course fraught with peril for Obama. But there is no way he can put her on the ticket and not be food watch his entire four years, with Billy pinching the hired help and popping off at all the wrong times.

hit and run

Bad:
will they stay that mad

If they need help maintaining their current level of anger, I'm here to help.

pagar, that's awesome. Again, I hope they know they can count on me for whatever they need.

Gmax, I agree -- and really, at this point, if Obama tries to reach out to those still truly angy, it will only come across as condescending and patronizing (because that's who Obama is) and nothing good would come of it and Obama knows it. Which means he won't try, which will only come across as arrogant and dismissive (because that's who Obama is).

clarice

That's good news about the IOC--a really vile group of folks. (I still want to defile Avery Brundige's grave if I ever find it.)

I understand the O's standing among women of a certain age (Morris) is very low--If there is any disrespect of the PUMAs or Hill at the convention he stands no chance of pulling them back into the fold/ (Now, Hit, you do look great in that PUMA outfit but you don't have to wear it ALL the time.)

hit and run

Well, I'll take it off when I leave for the airport on Friday to go get mrs hit and run and the kids.

But not a second sooner.

hit and run

Clarice, DoT, Jane, others trained in the law -- have you seen the final exams in Obama's Con Law classes?

MikeS

MikeS is calling BS on Obama's Afghanistan claims. I think it's great that he wants to send more troops, but to what end? How Does Obama define victory in Afghanistan?

I fear that, to Obama, victory means that Osama bin Laden dies. I'm afraid that after that event Obama will declare that the War On Terror has become a law enforcement problem.

bad

They are still mad after two months, what is going to happen at the convention to magically change that?

It won't be magical, but it will be a miracle if they actually vote for the party of chimpymchitlerrovecheneyhaliburtonbush or whatever else they believe republicans to be. I want to believe but color me skeptical. My dad was a lifelong yellow dog democrat who would never have voted for a republican. No matter what.

PaulL

Hit,

I read one of the final exams. The most interesting thing was that the names of two of Obama's 57 or 58 States are identified as Prosperity and Nirvana.

Danube of Thought

Clarice, I second your thoughts about the IOC. I enountered that body in more detail that I wanted in the course of representing the LAOOC for the 1984 Olympics. They rank up there with the Disney Company in my list of unpleasant people to deal with. And Avery Brundage was a horrid man with evident Nazi sympathies and a wholly bizarre notion about the "amateur" aspects of the whole thing.

I really do think Obama is going to lose. He has never topped 50% in any poll I have seen, and I think those who haven't yet registered their opinions are not very likely to break his way--we've already seen whatever flattering things there are to see, and what we are seeing now gets less flattering every day. Arrogance and emptiness.

Jane

I started reading it and my eyes glazed over.

20 years after the fact I am still gripped by fear on the last 2 days of July - when the bar exam occurs.

I'd rather try a case to a jury for 6 weeks than write a legal brief. The law part of being a lawyer is not my strong suit.

hit and run

Well, Republicans have Get Drunk and Vote 4 McCain, right?

For Hillary supporters need we need, GetDrunkAndStayHome.com

And look, it's available

Danube of Thought

Hit, I went to your link and it was very slow opening. I selected an exam at random--I think it was from 2002--and surprise! The question appeared to have something to do with racial segregation. I couldn't get to the end before the thing froze my computer up and I had a hard time exiting. I'll try to take a closer look through alternative means.

Ralph

I know that I may be guilty of clinging to my fantasy, but I really think that the MSM is getting desperate. Obama has nothing like the kind of poll numbers the "conventional wisdom" says he should have given the nauseatingly worshipful coverage his been receiving.

As several people have pointed out, many people haven't even begun to think about the election yet --- one of the entrepreneurs I work worth wasn't even aware that Obama had apparently beat Hillary for the Democratic nomination until early this week. I know, it's only anecdotal, BUT I do believe that it's not uncommon.

With the number of us "dedicated skeptics" out there, I think that Obama will get even less of a "bounce" than JF'ingKerry got from the convention.

narciso

The 2001 test, seems to be a carbon copy of Michelle's complaint against the HPV trials in Chicago. With echoes of the 'oppressive police state' we all live under. The 2002 test, seems to predict, the subprime crisis

clarice

Wow,DoT--That makes me more confident in my assessment.

I fear that, to Obama, victory means that Osama bin Laden dies. I'm afraid that after that event Obama will declare that the War On Terror has become a law enforcement problem.
Forget that. For Obama the War on Terror becomes a solved problem when bin Laden dies.

The best thing that could happen is if special forces find bin Laden's grave, and it's clear that he's been dead since, oh, 2003 or so, and that AQI had nothing to do with bin Laden. And that all those things that the Copperheads have been constantly whining about being a "distraction" from "getting bin Laden" were going on after bin Laden was already dead and not available for "getting."

clarice

Dot--Trust me--Hall of Fame, and yes, Jane, now for the voice transplant..Imagine being the campaign manager for Dukakis can lead to this lucrative career. Whud'a'thunk it?

Cathyf:

Well, Lancet would conduct an investigation and determine the time of death to be in Dec 2006 -- allowing Dems to claim that the 2006 election putting them in the majority in Congress led directly to his death.

Elliott

I started reading it and my eyes glazed over.

Which means you missed the gem at the end of the 2003 exam:

Actually, Susan Estrich has looked like this for quite a little while now. And, yes her plastic surgeon is Hall of Fame material.

Susan's voice is not as bad as her speech. I can handle deep, throaty . . . but her pronunciation of words are something else again.

bgates

I can handle deep, throaty . . . but her pronunciation of words are something else again.
If she's not talking, what could she possibly be doing that one could describe as "deep, throaty"?

Elliott

One more bit from Obama's 2003 exam, on Proposition 999 (clever, clever):

The initiative is the brainchild of Dr. Joseph Wainscloth, an African-American professor at the University of Utopia who two years ago successfully led an initiative banning the use of affirmative action at all state colleges and universities. According to Dr. Wainscloth, the passage of CAI will not only put a final nail in the coffin of race based preferences, but it will also "junk a 17th century racial classification system that has no place in 21st century America, liberate all of us from the confining labels which the government currently imposes on us, and signal America's first step towards a truly color blind society."

Wainscloth is, of course, a fictionalization of Ward Connerly, and a less accomplished on at that*.

The timing of the NYT story is funny, given the Obama sound bites that Halperin provides us with today:

“I have a sister who is half Indonesian, who is married to a Chinese Canadian. I don’t know what that makes my niece.”

Adds: “One of the things that sets this country apart is that there is no one who looks like a typical American.”

*But still more accomplished than Obama!

Danube of Thought

My enduring memory of Estrich dates back to the seven-hour presidency of John F. Kerry. As the exit polls appeared to show Kerry was a shoo-in, she appeared on Fox News and was unable to contain her glee, grinning (extremely broadly) like the Cheshire cat throughout. It's on my all-time mental highlight film.

Ann

It looks like IBD is doing the job our MSM should be doing but won't. They have started a series called "The Audacity of Socialism". Part One is "Barack Obama's Stealth Socialism" and is really frightening. Part One

Where is Gohmert from? Love that "GITMO" bill.

In other good news, Moody's reports that the NYT is about to be downgraded yet again.
Maybe they should just rename it Charmin.

Sara

RE: Susan Estrich. She looks good. She also seems so much more animated, like a woman who suddenly feels sexy again.

Now, I would be interested in comments on this one. Don't know anything about the author and I've read the piece through a thick fog of pain killer:

The Paper Trail: Obama’s Indonesian Background

kim

Sara, TexasDarlin has been pretty reliable through this COLB mess. She runs a PUMA site. I've been suspicious about Obama and Indonesia ever since I read the Chicago journalist's article about his religion from about three years ago. Obama is hiding something, and this may be some of it.
================================

Ann

Good news, Clarice. I like it: The New York Charmin!

The Anchoress asks a great question:

"We really need to know if Ma’ariv is telling it straight when they say that Obama released the prayer as he left his hotel and headed to the Western Wall."

She links to a site I am not familiar with but everyone should read: Obama's Fauxtonement
"Numerous newspapers and other media outlets reported that Maariv claims that "Obama submitted a copy of the note to media outlets when he left his hotel in Jerusalem," before visiting the wall. This is either true or false:

If it's false, why didn't the reporting media who had reporters present with Obama in Israel say something like, "however, our reporter did not receive any copy of this prayer?" That would certainly have put the onus back on Maariv to prove their statement.

Contrariwise, if it's true, then shouldn't the reporting media point that out in the story, thus putting the lie to the Obama campaign's claim that this was a terrible violation of the privacy of his divine conversations?
Yet instead of providing the evidence they clearly had, evidence that would either have supported Obama or Maariv, every last media source chose to stand silent.

Why?"

I hadn't thought of going after source documents like the KK; if they're going to present obvious forgeries as fact, fight fire with fire. Deborah Burlingame, that the latest fmr. Gitmo detainee to achieve

to Scalia's Harlanian dissent in Boumedienne
was one of those amateur poets, brought up by the defense, as a way of mitigating their
guilt: part of the presentation by the now infamous Seton Hall Law School which seems to specialize in apologia for terrorists.
She points out that the Kuwaitis are very upset with the authorities that led Mssr. Al Ajmi travel to Iraq, and are apprehensive

Ann

Clarice , You have to write about this:

"Already by the weekend, a (relatively) slick video appeared on YouTube that blended Obama's Western Wall prayer with various church scenes, crosses aplenty, a dove of peace, and a soundtrack based on Amazing Grace. The video closes with a "vote" button and an invitation to visit the official campaign website"Obama Campaign Managed The Event Brilliantly

Tell me this was not political! Compare this to his NOT visiting soldiers in Germany and you have a gold mine.

cathyf

Don't give too much credence to the YouTube (which is here BTW). It looks very much like an amateur production made by some creepy Obama groupie, and the "paid for by Obama America" on the last slide appears to be simply a screenshot of something else that really was an official campaign activity. It's not on an official Obama site, and it's not of the production quality that the real Obama offerings are. Nobody is going to blame Obama for the actions of some groupie that he knew nothing about (nor should they, for that matter.)

paul

I wouldn't be hasty in believing-

"How we got to the point where Obama's call for withdrawal is sensible rather than daft is of interest to McCainiacs and historians, but few voters, so it won't be a helpful issue for McCain."

His positions on Iraq, when compared to his positions on Afghanistan, are incongruent.

What criteria did you he in creating a timetable for Iraq, that he won't offer for use in Afghanistan?

He opposed the surge of troops in Iraq, yet he is now advocating a 'surge' in AG? What's the difference?

He complained of lacking an exit strategy for Iraq, what's his for AG?

Money spent in Iraq could have done more good being spent on America? how much money does he see us givng AG over his first term?

The only way he is free from his poor judgment on Iraq, would be if he wasn't being faced with simlar questions of War in the same region.

BO might poll better over time on Iraq, but the damage will linger for the Commander-in-Chief title.

Jane

Good Morning everyone!

I demand that Obama have a medical exam, and release all his records not just one page. I think all that smoking has caught up with him. He's just too tired to be healthy!

Good morning J.O.M!!!!!!!!!!!

Sue

DoT,

she appeared on Fox News and was unable to contain her glee, grinning (extremely broadly)

My favorite from her that night was when they were showing the voters in line in Florida. She made the comment that went sort of like this...look at those voters, they don't look like republicans to me...Britt Hume took her to task and they had a small on-air tiff. Great comedy, especially when Bush won Florida.

centralcal

I am drinking my morning coffee and speed reading through the blogs and I sadly don't do links.

Mickey Kaus at Slate has a long update on the NE Edwards story. Doesn't sound like they are releasing any pictures soon and they think they have something "hotter." Pheh (to quote Clarice)! Put up or shut up, I say.

Also, it sounds like The One made quite a splash of himself meeting with Congress critters. Basically, He is the One He has been waiting for. His ego is starting to grate on his fawning media (well, just a little - but it's a start).

Anyhoo - don't quite get what the Enquirer is up to. They may just end up losing the public's interest, our attention spans being so short and all.

clarice

The NE has evidence it says that one of Edwards' rich patrons has been paying Reille $15k per month and paying her beard (Andrew Young but not THE Andrew Young) as well.

Jane

Centralcal,

Read Don Surber on Edwards. Apparently there are at least 2 payoffs in the works. Rielle gets 15k a month and Andrew Young got cash to take the rap. LUN

Oh, Clarice beat me to it.

Rick Ballard

Karl has another good post up about how the black separatism preached at Hate Whitey United was promulgated by The One. I can't claim that Obama wrote Wright's 'God damn America' sermon but I can see that nose in the air (between the Dumbo ears) bobbing up and down in agreement as he listened to it.

If there are any JOM readeers from Chicago willing to take a ride through the Obama's neighborhood to take some shots of the buildings which he helped Uncle Tony &c turn into slums and the schools which he and his domestic terrorist buddies failed to help, I'll do my best to get them published.

People really do need to have some visuals of the value of Obama's judgement and word.

GMax

Clarice

You defamed Charmin. They put out a quality product and it does exactly what they claim it to do. Square that with your imposter. I would not even wipe with it.

centralcal

Clarice, Jane: Yeah, I read about the payoffs too. One would expect money to exchange hands for silence. Do you think that is "hotter?"

I don't. Unless, the person doing the paying is somehow a more scandalous story than Johnny and Rielle.

I kinda wonder what the NE's "end game" is gonna be and what their "timing" is related to - other than paper sales! ha.

The first thing I thought when Obama's "prayer" got leaked supposedly was that it was another Axelrod campaign ploy. I'm sure the journalists know that too so that is why they are silent now. Same thing for his supposedly "off-mike" statements to Davie Cameron in England about needing time to "think" each day. This guy is a real peace of work. Arrogant as they come, believes his own glowing press, and very dangerous.
Also, I wish Republicans would not be so silly as to worry about John McCain's negative tone lately!! How else is he supposed to win? By saying nice things about his opponent only?? I hope he hits Obama with everything he has. This guy needs to be exposed. The "hands off of me" nonsense coming mainly from his own campaign and being allowed to spark news articles warning McCain not to go negative (see NYTimes today) is beyond belief.
