Update: A GOP staffer just informed me that post-adjournment protests by the minority party are not unprecedented. The Democrats did it back in 1995, when the Republicans were in control. Democrats placed a big photo in the speaker's chair of then-Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.) wearing a diaper. Republicans note they are being more respectful this time.

Rep. Kevin Brady (R-Texas), who was on a plane headed home, went back to the Capitol, walking on to the floor dragging his luggage. He got a standing ovation.

Rep. John Shadegg (R-Ariz.) called it a "new Boston Tea Party!"

Rep. Mike Pence (R-Ind.) said he was "not leaving until we call this Congress back into session and vote for energy independence."

Rep. Tom Cole (Okla.), chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee, said the dimly lit chamber is a "vision of the future by the Democrat Party: The lights are out, there's no power, and the air conditioning is gonna go off soon."

Sue

I just called Representative Blount's office to thank him and to keep up the work on behalf of the American people. His office sounded happy. Left a message for Boehner. Come on people, start calling your representative. Republican or democrat. Let's let them know we appreciate it or let them know we are ashamed of them.

Rep. John Boehner 202.225.6205

I fear it's all in vain unless GWB steps in?

What was it El Rushbo coined not long ago? Operation CHAOS? The Democratic party is in complete and total disarray. Their candidate is a empty suit, even the MSM is starting to notice, and their leadership is going on vacation in the middle of a national energy crisis.

Priceless. The DNC is reflective of their base - KosKids run amok.

GMax

OH this is way too good to ruin by forcing them back into session so soon. Let it play out that in Pelosi Politburo, the lights and microphone go out on CSpan and that Democrats would not stay in town an extra day or two to open up the existing known oil reserves for drilling. This is huge.

I am going to call Boehner and thank him, and maybe send the RNCC a small token of my appreciation for a backbone!

It's summer, so there are no shortage of tourists trying to get in to witness what promises to be a heck of a civics lesson. They're lined up out the door, and being that the House is out of session, the G.O.P. has even opened up the floor seats to visitors. Every five minutes or so the throngs of citizens would erupt into loud applause and cheering at something that was being said. One source on the Hill I spoke with was calling this "The Guerilla Congress."

The atmosphere is positively electric in the House. It's a good thing for Democrats this isn't on C-SPAN because they'd look awful. Still, I get the sense Republicans in Congress aren't they're to put on a show. They've seized on an issue they have conviction in and the American people agree with. They're fed up with Pelosi and Reid's incompetence and bad faith. For the first time in years, House Republicans look like they're in it to win it. It's too early to say if Congressional Republicans can carry this momentum forward, but this is the stuff turning points are made of.

I keep reading reports about "tourist" aka taxpaying citizens erupting in applause and cheering -- kind of a blow the journos, who hate "tourists" aka, not beltway snobs, and the left blogs who pooh pooh this an issue of any significance.

The Guerilla Congress   [Mark Hemingway]

I just got back a short while ago from the press gallery at the House of Representatives where, as Ramesh mentioned, the Republicans are keeping up the fight on creating new domestic energy and lowering gas prices.

You can read more details about what happened here, but in a nutshell, Democrats voted on Wednesday to recess for five weeks (a motion that cleared by one vote, without a single Republican voting to recess) without taking any action on the energy issue. With Congress recessing after today, Republicans planned a maneuver to extend today's session as long as possible to make a point about the Democrats inaction. Democrats caught wind of the plan and motioned to adjourn before being foiled by the Republicans.

So what did the Republicans do? Even as the House Democrats left town running scared, they stayed on the floor of the House. House Republicans are still railing against the House leadership and are orating like their lives depend on it, to anyone who will listen about the need for cheaper gas and energy. The C-SPAN cameras have been shut off (C-SPAN has no control over them), the Democratic leadership made the sergeant-at-arms kill the microphones, and they even at one point tried to turn off the lights.

A number of media organizations have incorrectly referred to ‘C-SPAN cameras’ being turned off and not providing televised coverage of the GOP House members’ post-adjournment protest on energy policy being held on the House floor on Friday afternoon. Please note that cameras in the House chamber are under the control of the Speaker of the House and that all media organizations, including C-SPAN, wishing to cover events in the chamber must use the official House TV feed. No private media cameras are permitted in the House (or Senate) chambers.”

It's over? I wanted them to keep it up all night, or until the MSM showed up. Or Bush called for Congress to get back in session.

Obama explains himself:

"I was in union, Missouri which is 98 percent white - a rural, conservative. [sic] and what I said was what I think everybody knows, which is that I don't look like I came out of central casting when it comes to presidential candidates."

When he's right, he's right. Central casting would have him wearing Brooks Brothers, not Burberry.

Plus, as these photos (both taken recently in Berlin) show he's probably neither young enough nor hip enough to get the part.

Sue

Okay, I'm reading that Pelosi had the capitol hill police remove them, and other places I'm reading they just shut it down. So anyone have any idea which it is?

bad

Elliot

He appears incapable of taking responsibility for his-- words. And they call GWB stubborn.

Sara

I wasn't in Washington in '94 when Newt shut down the gov't. But, I was working for a Repub. Member of Congress during the Ollie North joint hearing and this afternoon reminded me of that. Our office was swamped with calls of support for Ollie (over a 1000 in just a a few hours) and we were part of delivering over 300,000 letters and telegrams that came in overnight after his first day of testimony.

At that time, the dems were reeling. They could not believe that "the public" didn't agree with them.

Sara

Sue, rules/law say the Cap. police have to clear tourists and visitors by 4:30. They pushed it to after 5. I think they'll pick it back up.

GMax

Whe I was on the phone with office of Minority Leader Boehner she told me they were closing the Gallery at 5 PM. I dont think even Nazi Nan had the guts to forcibly remove the Republicans and voters who streamed in to see and got caught up in the fever and stayed. It would have made martyrs and enemies and even dimbulb Nan has a staffer or two with above average intelligence to explain it to her.

The Republicans left on their own accord, but they may come back and it will be better coreographed the next time.

This will not go away, it foundational and damn near universal in appeal ( birkenstock bike riding professors excepted of course ).

centralcal

I think that they did the right thing by leaving, for now. This appeared to be quite spontaneous, judging by how many had to rush back to participate in it.

They will have a chance to regroup, plan, and (hopefully) see the overwhelming support via calls, emails, contributions etc. that may spur them on to bigger and better demonstrations of frustration with the Pelosi side of the House.

Elliott

But bad, he can't be responsible for people twisting his words so maliciously.

Meant to say that was via the Page, as is this from David Plouffe:

"I think John McCain has harmed himself in the last week, really eroding any capital he had built up in terms of what kind of politician he is," Plouffe says. "But he's really helped our campaign, because so many of you have contributed in the last week. Our field offices had people pouring into them yesterday."

Just a flesh wound.

Sue

I guess so, but I wanted them drug kicking and screaming from the chamber. While chanting drill now. But I am extremely proud of them for this. Lots of Texans involved. Woot-woot!

Thomas Collins

Article II, Section 3 of the US Const.:

"Section 3. He [the Prez] shall from time to time give to the Congress information of the state of the union, and recommend to their consideration such measures as he shall judge necessary and expedient; he may, on extraordinary occasions, convene both Houses, or either of them, and in case of disagreement between them, with respect to the time of adjournment, he may adjourn them to such time as he shall think proper; he shall receive ambassadors and other public ministers; he shall take care that the laws be faithfully executed, and shall commission all the officers of the United States."

I'd say this is an extraordinary occasion. Does GWB have the cajones to do this?

Sara

I just got off the phone with my Congressman's local office. I asked why he wasn't there, since Duncan Hunter managed to be there. They couldn't even tell me where he is today. I was hot, so I let the poor girl have it and then left my name and number and said that I expected to see him take a more active role and that he should be back in Washington.

Then I asked her, "oh BTW, do you even know what is going on in Washington?" and got a "yes, we just heard."

My Congressman is Darrel Issa, the man who led the charge to unseat Gray Davis, but since then has been totally off the radar. He knows now that at least one constituent isn't willing to let him off the hook.

Sue

http://corner.nationalreview.com/post/?q=NjFhMTVmMTEzYjI4ODQzN2JhOWE2MWQ5OTFhNWUyMGM=>Shaedegg isn't too shabby either.

Apparently, the fiesty Arizona conservative started typing random codes into the chamber's public address system and accidentally typed the correct code, allowing Republicans brief access to the microphone before it was turned off again.

"I love this," Shadegg told reporters up in the press gallery afterward. "Congress can be so boring. ... This is a kick."

centralcal

Maybe, Mr. Plouffe, maybe.

But some other folks are starting to get their home fires stoked a little too - and they are on our side.

John McCain can't really harm himself with me, since I detest him already. But, he can sure make me a more motivated contributor to the Republican/Conservative cause by continuing to fight against The Socialist One.

M. Simon

From ABC via VIMH on Obama, Hillary, and the c word:

"Now we’ve got ads about Britney and Paris," Obama said referencing McCain's new ad comparing his opponent to the young celebrities, Spears and Hilton. "At a time when we’ve got bigger challenges than any time in our history and you’re running ads with Hillary and er – with Britney and ah Paris in it. I mean come on. The American people deserve better."
Sara

Does GWB have the cajones to do this?

Oh, I think he definitely has the cajones. He is also a great poker player and seems to have the knack of playing his hand at just the right time.

He is up in Kennibunkport (sp?) this weekend with Papa Bush and Bro. Jed and you can bet this is the topic of conversation.

Sara

What planet do these people live on?

Pelosi’s spokesman, Nadeam Alshami, insisted that Republicans weren’t leaving for fear of having to face angry voters:

“Republicans are too scared to go home to face their constituents after voting against bills to force Big Oil companies to use it or lose it, demand that the president free our oil from the government stockpile and crack down on speculators,” Elshami said. “In a week where Exxon Mobil made the largest quarterly profits by a U.S. corporation, Republicans are staying in Washington to argue that Big Oil deserves more taxpayer lands.”

Via California Conservative, but I don't have the orig. link:

By 2:00 PM, in what resembled newsreels of the packed House floor on the day war was declared in December of 1941, the House floor was almost full. More than 400 visitors were in the gallery and Shadegg, having figured out the code on the panel that controls the microphones, put the sound system in the House back on, until a staffer (presumably from the speaker’s office) came and shut it off again.

“Word spread that the speaker, who was never actually here on the floor, was going to shut down the House press gallery,” a breathless Shadegg told me in a call from the floor, “But rules are clear that the gallery can’t be shut down if a Member is there. So a bunch of us have been taking turns, we’re ‘human shields,’ keeping the press gallery going.” Along with Shadegg, the ‘human shields’ included House GOP Whip Roy Blunt (Mo.), and Texas Reps. Ted Poe and John Carter.
