It is kind of interesting that Ayers seems to have succeeded at directing roughly 2% of a $50M to a pet project of his and his radical friend Klonsky, before Klonsky even had his degree. If Klonsky and Ayers were working together on this project as far back as 1991, then Ayers essentially used Klonsky to front for him to get the money for their joint project. That may be what they are trying to cover up. Not illegal, but not entirely ethical either.

Gabriel Sutherland

That's odd that there are no records at all for SSW in the State of Illinois corporations and llc database. This database does include nonprofit organizations.

How would SSW receive grant funds from the CAC if they have no records of operation in the State of Illinois? SSW would have to have bank accounts to receive a check or wire transfer. Could all of SSW have solely been in the personal accounts of Mike and Susan Klonsky?

We're talking about almost $900,000. That money had to go to some kind of organization with a legal and financial structure.

DebinNC

the ironic thing is that the only legislative endeavor he can point to is the Transparency Act! ROFL.

Brilliant, clarice! LOL

Is anymore evidence necessary to prove that the "education reform" proposed by BHO is of a piece with the Ayers/Klonsky/Obama model praised recently by Ayers as being implemented in Chavez's Venezuela?

It seems that proposition is already proved beyond a reasonable doubt rather than by a preponderance of evidence by the evidence already uncovered by Profs. Diamond and Kurtz, together with the dligence efforts of bad and others.

All of the evidence they have uncovered is admissible under FRE 802(d)(2) and 803(6)-(8).

It is, therefore, difficult to rebut with any plausibility.

DrJ

PUK, sure it raises suspicion, but I'd bet the campaign holds that this is worth the risk when compared with having to spend time talking about "history." It cuts off one attack front.

It's not as exciting as the Steve Diamond post that M. Simon mentions in his 3.30 PM post,I guess, but Rabble Rouser Reverend Amy has noted on this post at noquarter:

Maybe SSW is trade or fictitious name and the (now unknown) corporation is the parent entity.

E.g., ABC Corp., d/b/a SSW.

clarice

I want you to know that --completely aside from the campaign issues raised by CAC_-this is a curtain raiser for those outside the education establishment on the pass the trash nature of the administration of education, education schools, grants and funding for those schools, teaching training, etc etc.
Except for the linkage to Ayers and Klonsky, this is the kind of carpola that is taking place every day of the year.
One of the best ways to improve public education in America is to shut down the schools of education. No one should be hired with an ed degree alone. Teachers should have to have degrees in real subjects and the art of pedagogy ought to be taught in graduate school along with school administration.

PeterUK

"You think we are bleeding idiots just because your fellow countrymen are"

No,but revolutionaries are notoriously poor at bookkeeping.Looking at their qualifications ,i doubt if there is a numerate one amongst them.
Ayers is obviously stupid, home made bombs! Klonsky a taxi driver.Obama can't tell the same lie the same way twice.
Why not apply the rules that corporations have to work under, malfeasance of funds for example?

clarice

And another thing--encourage wealthy people to spend their money on jewels and yachts and "frivolous" things instead of settin gup charitable foundations that simply feed and fuel the remnants of the Marxist hordes.

clarice

True, PUK, they are innumerate as a rule, however, they aren't stupid enough to include plans for a criminal enterprise in official board minutes.

Yo!

The last entry in Obama's Annenberg file:

"Discharged. Unfit for command."

No wonder the Big O never mentions his 6 year stint at Annenberg.

Rick Ballard

"That money had to go to some kind of organization with a legal and financial structure."

Small Schools Workshop/Network could be a dba, a sole proprietorship or a partnership. Those are all legal forms of business ownership. The SSW site makes no claim to be a nonprofit nor does it solicit contributions.

I'd be very interested in the Ayers bit if he were actually a named partner with Klonsky but I'll bet he's a silent partner who "consults" with SSW as the needs of his bank account balance warrant.

PeterUK

"but I'd bet the campaign holds that this is worth the risk when compared with having to spend time talking about "history." It cuts off one attack front."

But opens another.Suspicion is a powerful thing if aroused - properly.

Ranger

By the way, this Ayers/Klonsky set up with SSW is exactly how things work in Chicago. Guy A (who is a friend of the Mayor) and guy B who is a friend of guy A set up a company that focuses on services the city government uses. Guy A's name gets him city work for the company. After a while, guy A is a recognized "expert" at this service, and gets hired by the city to manage the service for the city. Guy A formally drops his name from the compnay, so there is no conflict of interest when he gives bigger and better contracts to his old company. Guy A now can legally double dip, getting a nice city paycheck and a share of the money he gives to his friend, guy B, who is officially the only name anyone sees. Everybody wins, except the tax payers of the city, who's services go to carp because it no longer matters if the service is performed, the contracts just keep going to the same people. In fact the services usually stop being performed, because actually doing the services creates overhead that cuts into guy A and guy B's profits.

Ayers' resume lists Ayers as co founder of Small Schools Workshop.

RalphL, thanks so much for the heads-up. I hadn't seen it, and wouldn't have but for your pointing it out. I hadn't realized that his class standing was that low--I believe I understood that he had been in about the middle of the class.

Not only did he earn twelve varsity letters, he was quarterback of the 1895 football team and held the academy record for the pole vault. He was a brilliant inventor and held several patents which provided quite nicely for him and my grandmother for many years. An altogether remarkable man.

Thanks again.

"despite the request by Rolling, none of the documents were withheld when the university reopened the documents to public inspection Aug. 26."

I'll have to disagree on that. Read Kurtz again (linked by Diamond). He conceded that those 1995 BOD records originally marked "Consent," as well as auditor's reports  marked "Restricted," were inaccessible. There's no reason to believe that the UIC granted access to those. What they supposedly have said is that the files not originally marked restricted, which Rollings attempted to block, are accessible, as they (all) should have been.

Diamond has a new post up by the way -- it turns out Rollings intervention -- in an effort to limit access to many more files not originally restricted -- happened on the very day Kurtz contacted the UIC Library concerning research on the records. The myth of coincidence is well past, I'd say.

Another thing you have to wonder about is the lack of foresight. Why block one or two sets of files, and not related files (which is what Rollings was apparently attempting to do)?

It suggests to me the prevailing arrogance of the Obama campaign, the contempt, if you will, for the intelligence or scholarship of people like Kurtz, TM, or Diamond.

They never thought anyone would think of the CAC. How dare anyone question the integrity or motivation of such superior beings as Ayers or Obama?

Well, the meeting notes may be more intersting than we suspect. The ones that are public show a little bit of discord, as Global Labor has discussed. At one point the board refused to approve some funding for a project that Ayers was pushing and Obama told them he would go discusss it with Ayers and get a clarification. My guess is that the initial meetings may have discussed the issue of conflict of interest with Ayers being a board member and recommending funding, at which point Ayers agrees to remove himself from the board, but suggests a bright up and coming lawyer he knows as the right guy to be president (of the board)...

I can't find it at the UIC College of Education though. I don't think the Gates link is dispositive at all. Mike Klonsky was a grad student when the first grant award was made by CAC. I have a tough time believing that UIC was represented by a grad student, even if it was just a cover for Ayers.

Why was the CAC address used for Small Scools/Klonsky if UIC was the sponsor?

Bless you guys for digging along with Kurtz and Diamond. I suspect however, that the very largest news to be garnered we now have--Ayers and Klonsky and the failure of the project and perhaps the use of CAC to set up a political machine for O.
The digging already compelled O to backtrack from saying Ayers was a guy in his neighborhood, and acknowledge a working relationship of some duration.
That O has no executive experience but for this (and his campaign) makes it very damaging that it was an utter flop.
As for his other executive experience; he picked the worst possible VP, he chose to forego federal funding (breaking a promise in the process) and now seems to be tight on $$$. He's now encouraging the development of 527s for his campaign though he earlier said he didn't want them.

Here's a quote from a U of Michigan article on one of their professor's work on the small schools initiative:

The U.S. Department of Education considers school reform initiatives that have proven effective during the past several decades to include New York City’s
Small Schools Network, the Small Schools Workshop based at the University of Illinois in Chicago, and the Coalition of Essential Schools (CES). Small size is a definitional concept for the first two networks, and is at the heart of the Coalition of Essential Schools.

I am still looking for more evidence on SSW's provenance.

Jim Rhoads aka Vnjagvet

Here's a cached bio of Klonsky from a cached version of the SSW webpage:

Dr. Klonsky is an education writer, teacher and researcher. He currently serves as director of the Small Schools Workshop. The Workshop is assisting public schools nationwide in restructuring efforts aimed at creating smaller, more personalized learning environments.

Dr. Klonsky has written extensively on the benefits of small schools as well as on broader school reform issues. He is the author of Small Schools: The Numbers Tell a Story (University of Illinois Small Schools Workshop) and is currently co-editing Simple Justice: The Challenge for Teachers in Small Schools (Teachers College Press).

He started the School Change Institute in 1998 as a training grounds for external partners giving assistance to under-performing public schools.

Dr. Klonsky was named to President Clinton's Advisory Panel on School Violence. He serves as president of the editorial board of Catalyst, Chicago's school-reform journal has written extensively on the history and progress of Chicago's dynamic school reform effort.

He also teaches graduate courses on "Teacher Leadership in School Change" and "Politics of School Reform".

This is from a page on UIC's current website:

UIC Partnerships in Education

The Small Schools Workshop is a group of educators, organizers and researchers based in the College of Education at the University of Illinois at Chicago. The Small Schools Workshop collaborates with teachers, principals, and parents to create new, small, innovative learning communities in public schools. In addition to our interest in individual schools, the Small Schools Workshop actively explores the larger issues of education reform, with a particular focus on the role that small schools can have in furthering positive whole-school and systemic change.

Center for Urban Education Research and Development

UIC Office of the Provost Educational Outreach. The University of Illinois at Chicago has several enjoyable educational activities supported by the Provost's Office, designed for intellectual stimulation and for increasing public awareness of recent advances in various academic disciplines. These activities, specially aimed at high school students and open to the public, are designed to showcase the exceptional quality of our academic enterprise.

Council on Teacher Education

LUN, but the links on the page are old and do not direct to the new webpages for these organizations.

DrJ

A few interesting things have come from Klonsky's thesis. First his educational background:

1967 B.A. California State University, Northridge
1993 M.A. University of Illinois, Chicago
1996 Ph.D. University of Illinois, Chicago.

Klonsky claims his interest in education was spurred by his daughter reach high school. She was "creative, artistic and politically aware." What they found were magnet, "factory" schools.

In 1991 he started writing and researching about small schools as contributing editor for "Catalyst Magazine." About that time "Bill Ayers and Bruce McPherson began putting together a research and school restructuring effort at the University of Illinois at Chicago, which would come to be known as the Small Schools Workshop."

Klonsky was asked to join them "to be their writer-researcher," and he "jumped at the chance."

"The Workshop appeared to be focusing instead upon the creation of democratic communities of learners which could become empowering passageways to the successful student learning experiences which I dreamed of for Amanda (his daughter) and all of Chicago's children. I also used the opportunity to pursue postgraduate work in education leading towards a Ph.D. in Curriculum."

There's more, but this should shed some light on how this all came together.

Rick Ballard

Jim,

The first grant makes the SSW/UIC link apparent, if not clear. Bad's payee info didn't name the UIC, so I'm still puzzled as to what the actual structure of SSW might be. Is Klonsky working for and reporting to UIC through Ayers? Did Ayers move a buddy through graduate school into a perpetual lifetime scam where he'll always be paid and never have to face one of those nasty tenure track situations? Seventeen years in, that sure appears to be the case.

It appears that Clarice is correct in suggesting that this is a blind alley but it has certainly been enlightening for me.

What a racket.

DrJ

Rick,

"Yes" to much of what you are asking.

That SSW started at UIC is clear; whether they are still affiliated with them is less so. There are many, many ways that SSW could have been structured, and even how it reports to the University. What is on the Web site might be true, sort of, but the reporting relationship and the structure can be two very different things.

One example is how intellectual property is handled at many public universities. They are often set up as entities (often corporations) under the University Foundation (the group that solicits donations) so they are distinct from the University. Yet the report to a Vice Provost for Research (or equivalent). Other such groups report to various Deans.

There can be a whole host of reasons to do one sort of structure or another, and I wouldn't begin to guess how the SSW would be set up from what we know now.

Jane

I wasn't aware that CLinton pardoned Ayers. At least that is what O'Reilly said a few minutes ago. Since he was never convicted that seems weird. Maybe it was Dohrn.

bad

Rick

The payee on the grants was listed as both UIC and Small Schools Workshop. And the address was a UIC address, the same address as the office space donated by UIC for The Chicago Annenberg Challenge.

I'd like to see the canceled checks in addition to a bunch of other documentation.

Buford Gooch

It was kind of Mr Rolling to point out exactly which files need to be looked at.

bad

Jane

It was a couple of other weatherman, both women IIRC. Ayers and Dohrn got off on charges of prosecutorial misconduct. Evidence against them was thrown out.

Jim Rhoads aka Vnjagvet

Rick:

I have some experience with the 501(c)(3) affiliates of universities, having represented grantees and written grant proposals for them.

Typically, someone affiliated or to be affiliated with the University puts a grant proposal together.

The writer typically builds their personal budgetary needs (salary, benefits, travel expenses, etc.) and staffing budget, as well as other costs of the project. If the grant is approved, the writer will be paid by the University as an employee of the University with funds received from the grant. Sometimes employment by the University is contingent on approval of the grant. If approved, the grant funds will be accounted for by the University against the budget submitted to the grantor.

These funds are independently audited by the grantor and dire consequences ensue if such funds are used for expenses not fairly attributed to the grant.

Since the University is, by definition, a charitable organization, the project need not be separately incorporated but sometimes is. Separate books must be kept for each project in accordance with the terms of the grant.

DrJ

Jim,

That's exactly right. Sometimes these grants are submitted directly under the University umbrella, even if it is a group like the SSW. There are a whole host of researchers who live off of grants in this manner, and the grants office does all of the accounting.

One thing I have learned about Universities is that nearly anything is possible. The only rub for public institutions is direct holding of equity, and there are ways around even that.

Nero

Michael & Susan Klonsky have a newer book out (2/08), about how the neocons killed the 'small school movement'. LUN

Wonder if they talk about the 'early days' at all?

clarice

Now, what in the world do the neocons have to do with school policy? Most cons don't even think the feds have any business in schools and neocons rather confine themselves to international matters.

Rick Ballard

Thanks, Jim. I misunderstood or misinterpreted Bad's payee info (or confused it with Orr School Network or one of the others). I suppose Ayers/Rollings awarding SSW money is just one of those little pluses that go with writing a sucessful application.

Neo,

People have to remember that the objective of the SSW is - one student, one teacher, one principal, one vice-principal, one dean of students and a full ancillary staff complement. It's a full employment project run by a school dedicated to turning out school administrators.
