Funny, we have a house in our county that was built as a spec house developed ten years ago that was never sold. The last known owner is Countryside. The lawn is overgrown with weeds. And now after the wind storm has fallen trees and branches everywhere. They quit trying to sell it along time ago.

I would love to put a sign in the yard that says something like "we paid for this house and we didn't kick out a family... VOTE FOR REPUBLICANS".

Could I get in trouble if I did? :)

matt

the McCain campaign has to hit hard at the democratic involvement in Lehman and Fannie Mae. If there were contributions by others such as Merrill or WaMu, that should be investigated too.

Obama is trying to pin this on McCain with no proof whatsoever to date. Follow the money!

Last week, Raines settled a civil lawsuit with the feds by agreeing to pay $24.7 million, ending more than three years of legal wrangling over accounting shenanigans at Fannie Mae. Raines admitted no wrongdoing...

I guess $24.7 million was just to make the nuisance go away. Chump change to a high roller like Raines.

I wonder if he and Denise (the new girlfriend from Fannie Mae) will have a pre-nup. She probably knows where a lot of bodies are buried, so to speak.

Rich,

It wasn't something he supported or voted on or didn't bother to show up for. She said he "introduced" legislation. That only Obama, not McCain had the foresight to see the problem. Or something equally ridiculous. Anyway, I'm heading out for the night. I'll try to find the exact wording tomorrow and maybe that will help in the search.

I would settle for new material. Your posts are just a rehash of the previous posts (McCain = Bush) and a compilation of mindless already debunked crap you parrot from left wing blogs. You already admitted ideology is what motivates you, so it doesn't matter if its a communist like Fidel Castro or a fraud like Obama, you are going to support him. That's fine, but it limits your options. If I walk into a synagogue and scream "I love Hitler", there is not much in dialogue that can progress from there.

I would love to know what JOM thinks of Tzipi Livni. She is touted as "the new Golda Meir, former Mossad agent-turned-politician Tzipi Livni emerged last night as the new head of Israel’s ruling party and was set to become the Jewish state’s second woman Prime Minister, less than a decade after she first entered parliament" Tzipi

BDS has created a lot of pathology, Pete. It is a real phenomenon. I wonder upon whom it will fasten next. Palin is an obvious candidate, but it won't work for two reasons; one, she won't be President, two, she'll respond rather than retract inside her shell.

Bush and Cheney are the ideal sort for a pathology like BDS to evolve. Bush and Cheney both prefer to work their magic unobtrusively, which they have done. Self-promoting politicians they ain't. But historians will get their role right, and sociologists will be exploring the delusion of BDS, which has singlehandedly wrecked the Democratic Party, for many years to come. Inquiring minds want to know how to avoid another such train wreck. PD is right; Leo suffers, inchoately, but probably not endlessly.

ROOT CAUSE

What is the root cause of the current mortgage crisis?

Mortgages issued with no verification of income, no ability to make payments, and no down payment.

But why would anyone underwrite obviously risky mortgages?"

"Fannie Mae executives, aided and abetted by Congressional Democrats and the Clinton administration, went hog wild promoting low-quality loans. After all, their stock options and "earnings-per-share challenge grant awards" were at stake. A press release from 1999 -- announcing a $1 billion taxpayer-funded giveaway -- epitomized the era."

If McCain doesn't have enough to tie this to the Democrats by now, it's hard to imagine what more he would need.

LUN

M. Simon

Ah! I can breathe again!

Thanks, bgates. I just flipped over to Firefox after installing greasemonkey from FF's website. Then I went to Greasemonkey's site and downloaded troll_blocker_3 per bgates instructions.

Then, in manage user scripts, select Troll Blocker 3 and click edit. Use your local plain text editor.

Where the trolls are listed, copy the last line and insert it. Increase the index by one, and change the name to /Semanticleo/. Repeat the process with /TCO/ and save.

Then you will not have given either Cleo or TCO the pleasure of banning them, but your own sinuses will magically clear.

Whenever Cleo or TCO care to positively contribute -- and that means constructively contribute rather than agree -- instead of try to clog the arteries, I'll be happy to remove them from my troll file.

I feel better already, and can now concentrate on the real problem which is addressing the question why it is that people who hear Nancy Pelosi say the Dems had nothing to do with the current economic problems don't laugh in her face.

Bob, Jane -- bless her heart -- nailed the answer in one sentence on the "So now Obama..." thread:

Jane: Obama's campaign is tuned in perfectly to people who don't pay attention.

That is the line of the campaign. And if that line is the painted image, the wash on the canvas that makes up the background is chilling.

No one in the audience laughs because they consider it a game politicians play. The audience sees nothing at stake. Political problems are other people's problems; the audience is occupied by problems of its own.

But much is at stake, even when the audience doesn't see it. When rust eats away so slowly, our attention is elsewhere.

The audience is lost in the funhouse.

SEC adopts rules against naked short-selling

When I heard about this practice, I thought they had gone nuts.

"naked short selling" is basically fraud, and has no use except to manipulate.
Most brokerage houses would drop your account if you tried this yourself.

Gabriel Sutherland

Short selling is good. Attempts to control it are bad. Short selling is self correcting market mechanism. It's a bet against something the speculator thinks is preposterous.

Look at this regulation.

Investment managers with more than $100 million holdings in securities would be required to promptly begin public reporting of their daily short positions.

I can hide all the short sellers in the world behind this threshold.

When the big shots take on risk I know they cannot support, I'm going to short against them and win. Merely trying to regulate me out of the market won't resolve the incredibly stupid risk the big shots are taking on.

When I short, I am manipulating. Are those taking huge risk they know they cannot support with existing capital "manipulating"? Of course they are.

GMax

When I first heard about naked shorts I said to myself "you cant do that." I am out of my expertise but I think that for the ordinary Joe, that is of course true. Somehow some players were getting around the need to borrow the security first before the sale. Nice work if you can get it.

Anyone understand the first uptick rule that was dropped but is now being advocated? Another curb on shorting is my rudimentary understanding of it. Would love to not be so ignorant if you can share.

glasater

Here is an older article on the Naked Shorts.

Here is Cramer on the Up Tick Rule that makes some sense.

RichatUF

GMax-

I think DoT and Rick can better explain it in practice, but the academic justification for eliminating Rule 10-1a (uptick rule) and the background for the change. This is the academic study from the 2004-2007 pilot program. It seems that the academic study and actual practice is opposite-maybe a rule of thumb when dealing with economics.

To just throw it out their, I'll point out that Soros took a 9.5 million share stake in Lehman as of June 30 2008. I wouldn't be surprised if he got inside info on Lehman because of the transaction, took it to friends working the CDS market in London on the one side and lent out his shares for short selling the other. He's got a presidential election to win, destroying a company or two a week until then is small punishment.

RichatUF

but the...but this is the SEC's and the academic justification...

The latest rumor is that the dems want to recess Congress so that the administration takes the full brunt of the hit. If true, I hope that everyone in the country decides to throw the bums out.

They are in it up to their eyes on Fannie Mae/Freddy Mac & Lehman, and now Obama has the chutzpah to try and blame Bush? Right! Hoopefully the McCain campaign is getting the ads ready as we speak, because you know the media is going to stay silent on this as well.

The latest rumor is that the dems want to recess Congress so that the administration takes the full brunt of the hit. If true, I hope that everyone in the country decides to throw the bums out.
Can you run against a 14 percent approval rating Congress and win?

It would be fantastic if the Democrats in the House and the Senate closed shop.

The big picture strategy for the left of center organization to shift the United States left is tie all fuses of demolition to President Bush. Have we seen this before? Yes. They did this to President Nixon. They're doing it again.

How do you push back against this pull to the left? Energy.

The resources are there. There inside our borders. We don't have to enroll in Middle eastern Outward Bound for fun times and petroleum smoothies. We can ride bikes to the natural resources right here at home.

Energy is the wedge issue. When do you start attacking? Not now. The economy will dominate news cycles until Monday morning.

When the time is right President Bush can attack the US Congress for failing to act when energy prices are just returning to earth because all the speculators have been scared out of the market. Gasoline prices won't come down because the supply remains constant. If the US starts INCREASING investment into developing a greater energy supply from the resources in the United States the price of oil will see a moderate decline, but the price of gasoline will dramatically decline.

Obama has to keep the economy on the radar. He needs to delay all these moves by promoting the shittiest stories to the media radar. That's why he's saying "get in the face" of your neighbors. It's asinine advice, but it keeps your issues on the media plate and keeps the actual changes taking place on the chopping block.

There is another side to short selling "naked" or otherwise,a company's shares can be driven down by rumours, this has happened recently in the UK,there is no reason to believe it doesn't occur in the US.
Al that is required is for shares in a company to drop in value long enough for the operation to take place.

According to Data Explorers,a tracking company, some 20% of Lehman's shares were in the short position just prior to the crash.

If you are using windows, open the troll blocker file in IIRC notepad.

then, take the line that looks like:
knownTrolls[2] = /getagrip/;

Copy that line, and insert it immediately following the line you copied.

Then change it to:
knownTrolls[3] = /Semanticleo/;

That is, increment the number and change the name of the troll.

You can add new trolls on new lines later.

Save the file.

In the Menu for Firefox. Select Tools:Manage User Scripts: and under Troll Blocker 3, include the page:
http://justoneminute.typepad.com/*

Close it all and try to load JOM.

Hope this helps.

clarice

Well, PUK, I am sure that some are more honorable than that fellow. Just imagine--even if his charges proved warrantless, he made money by publicizing them. Of course, he did run the risk of defamation suits if he was without any foundation for the claims, but to my knowledge he was never sued. The defamation laws in the US are very lax .

Thomas Collins

See LUN for a decent article on untangling the tangled web of the financial markets mess. The brief mention of Barney Frank gives him more credit (so to speak) than he deserves (others have suggested a Resolution Trust Corp. solution before he did, and Congressman Frank has been a key player in the Congressional/Fannie Fatcats/Freddie Fatcats/DC Insider Axis of Corruption). But the article does give a pretty balanced view of the moves of the Feds and the probable medium term impact of the financial markets mess on the "real economy" (although I must say that, given the importance of human barter to human existence, I view financial markets as not separate from, but an integral part of, the "real economy").

sbw

If Windows Fie=refox works like Mac, in the Manage User Scripts, if you highlight Troll Blocker 3, you should be able to click edit script.

It may ask for your editor - use Notepad rather than MS Word 'cause you want just text, not a .doc formatted monstrosity.

Then do the copy, paste, and edits mentioned above to paste in Semanticleo where the other name was.

Hope this helps, Jane.

I, too, prefer a world with constructive Cleos to help me refine my understanding of the world around me. But Cleo doesn't do that. He seems charged to get in the way of learning and to obfuscate any understanding and growth.

Talk about a gramscian long march through culture!
