"FOX News/Rasmussen Reports state polling this week shows a slightly improved situation for John McCain compared to a week ago -- though the underlying dynamic of the election still favors Barack Obama.

The biggest change is found in Florida where the race is now essentially even with McCain at 49 percent and Obama at 48 percent. A week ago, Obama was up by five percentage points and the week before he held a seven-point lead. The current polling shows McCain's support at its highest level since mid-September.

McCain also moved slightly ahead again in Ohio with a 49 percent to 47 percent advantage over Obama. A week ago, those numbers were reversed and Obama had the two-point advantage. In Florida, the current poll shows McCain at his highest level of support since mid-September."

Obama - $604,000,000 haul
How come a plumber isn't worth $250,000 but a candidate with a blank CV is worth £604 million?
For that kind of bread, you could buy a president with a track record.

ben

Annoy the media...vote Republican.

So the host is gonna say that for Powell this is payback to the Bush administration for how he was treated. My inclination is to respond that if that is true, perhaps we over-estimated his so-called patriotism. Any other ideas.

I would say there's no evidence McCain treated Powell badly.
It reminds me of the standard lefty criticism of Bush- we attacked Iraq even though it had nothing to do with 9/11. Well, now Powell wants to hurt McCain, even though he had nothing to do with Bush.

Powell disappoints me because it is McCain's political courage that got the surge supported, and I don't think Powell did enough to acknowledge that.
Without McCain, Powell wouldn't have the luxury to endorse Obama based on "generational change" and other social issues. Iraq would be a disaster without McCain, and that's what we'd be talking about.

Jane:

Oh sure, this has little to do with this election, but then again, how Powell was treated by this administration has as little to do with it as well -- but for crying out loud, how Powell was treated?

When the whole Plame thing broke open, Bush stood in front of the world and said, "If there's a leak out of my administration, I want to know who it is"

Shortly thereafter, Armitage told Powell he was the leaker, and Powell told Armitage, "let's just keep this between us and investigators, mmmmkay"

How Powell was treated?

Jane Plumber

Maybee,

I think Powell is endorsing Obama because he is black. And frankly I don't have a problem with that particularly. He can vote for whoever he wants. It's sort of sad or maybe racist that he won't admit it.

I guess I can say that.

Worrisome, no doubt, but you figure any improvement in McCain's national numbers and other swing states will be reflected in VA...McCain can only go up there.

Yeah, he was treated pretty shabbily by a number of Republicans. Four stars. JCS. Secretary of Defense. Secretary of State. His FCC chariman son pushed on Clinton by McCain. I should be so shabbily treated.

I guess I can say that.

Seems easy enough to conclude that Powell's endorsement is race based. He hasn't said one thing of substance in Obama's defense otherwise.

I don't see why anyone who endorses or votes for someone based on their race shouldn't be called a racist. What else would you call it?

But I'm not going to be on the radio show, so I don't need to be circumspect. (Go Jane!)

Thanks but I defer to Judy Miller on that point; I read her book on reactions to the Holocaust in Europe, her book on Islamist movements, and her germ bio book. With all this expertise, it seems odd she would vote
for Obama. She realizes that it was Fizgerald prompted by the NY Times; with the acquiescence of Armitage, Powell's major domo, that kept her in jail; right. She was one of the few that didn't turn their back on Chalabi (I'm talking to you Jim) who compared to Maliki or Jaafari, is a stand up guy. She was ostracized for sticking to the source; instead of relying
on Baathist flaks. The point that every intelligence service from the SVR to the DGSE to the Jordanian and Egyptian
Mukharabat had similar assessments of the WMD's never seems to penetrate the body politics

Another figure, who is now 'dead to me' Ken "It's a Cakewalk" Adelman; endorsing Obama. I mean does the man have no shame; apparently not, also he never learned from the flaying he received from Vanity Fair.
Seriously is 'everyone on crazy pills'

Someone else who's pilgrimage to Harb al Obama (House of Obama) Niall Ferguson, the lone colonial imperialist among the tories;
Scottish but grew up in Kenya; has been tending left, on a consistent basis. The seeds were set, with his December 2001 dystopian view of New York; as an armed anti-islamist camp. With his backward looking Times retrospect in 2006; which couldn't envisage the surge, but predicted a Chinese equity collapse; wrote the Oh God, the end is near column for Time to weeks ago; considering than Anna Cox,
Sullivan and Joe Klein; post there is a sign of insanity.

Truthfully, guys, I don't know where I stand vis-a-vis Judy Miller.

I got the "Judy Miller is voting for Obama" from the MediaBistro blog, so don't know how accurate it is.

Yeah Jane...how's this

When Ted Gold, Terry Robbins And Bill Ayers girlfriend, Diana Oughton, blew themselves up in Geenwich Village on March 6, 1970, they were constructing a bomb to mimic the anti-personal devices used by the US Army in Vietnam. The intended target was a US Army officer's ball later that month. In 1970, Powell was a Major in the Army serving in Vietnam. So Powell just endorsed a guy whose terrorist friend attempted to kill Powell's fellow officers. I wonder if Powell knew any of those officers who attended that ball?

Senator Obama said he would love to answer all questions, but was constrained by the need to spend time with his sick grandmother.

Charlie (Colorado)
In an appearance on conservative Hugh Hewitt's radio program, Davis said that circumstances had changed since John McCain initially and unilaterally took Obama's former pastor off the table. The Arizona Republican, Davis argued, had been jilted by the remarks of Rep. John Lewis, who compared recent GOP crowds to segregationist George Wallace's rallies. And, as such, the campaign was going to "rethink" what was in and out of political bounds.

Jane-I don't see that Powell's endorsement adds a great deal to Obama's dance card but it diminished Powell's (somewhat undeserved) reputation for high minded patriotism.

There is no nicer way to put that and remain honest.

Powell said nothing about Obama's programs and everything about Obama's paper-thin image. Then Powell hammered McCain for the Palin decision when she has more proven success as an elected executive than any of the other three running for office.

And Powell should talk. We are still suffering from Powell's tenure at State.

You're right, but that was probably a freudian slip, he seems intent on warring

Much like the Roman example of theJugurthan
War; which is closest to the American war on terror. Too many, seem in debt or enthralled to the enemy; the Numidian princes. Powell is a very real version of the former; the latter are too many to count. Back then, it was Marius that saved the day; for a time; against all odds; I vacilate on whether McCain or Petraeus fit the bill; sometimes I think only Palin really fits the bill. Yet people who should know better. like Althouse, find reasons to as the Brits put it; "rubbish her".While Obama gets a pass, on everything; the reason why the Marriage Amendment has to be federal; is because liberals will not allow federalism, that challenge their precepts.
It's just a sad fact of life, the Joyce foundation (underwritten by Obama) campaign against the Second Amendment that nearly succeeded in Heller is one example, the Sorosian astroturf campaign behind CFR; (How'd that working out for you, John), the
'free a jihadi' public relations effort conducted from Saudi and Kuwaiti offices.
I know I'm overreacting, but what is the real response.

When people who should know better, eg; a former AF and law enforcement vet, who even suspects Obama's grandparents,(who by rights should sympathize with Joe, as a fellow veteran) sees as being too iconoclastic, back in the day, yet quotes back to me, "He's not a plumber" and "he shouldn't have gone to Obama" and you tell then, that's not the!@#!@$%#@^$ point, and and "Palin scares me because she shot a moose, and fired a trooper" and you explain the whole thing to them; and they refuse to understand;what do you do. When people actually believe the "Tax Policy Center's

What McCain should do with the Wright ad is not show any footage of his hateful sermons.

Instead, just have a still of Wright and Obama, and have the voiceover say: "Barack Obama wants you to believe that he attended the Rev. Wright's church for 20 years and didn't know what was being preached." Then cut to film of Wright at press club saying, "He does what politicians do. I am not running for office."

This would be effective. Everyone knows what Wright said in church, so it doesn't need to be repeated.

Not once in her months of fatal illness did he make time to say goodbye.I find that remarkable and telling.

I think she was the center of his young life and that he most likely suffered severe separation anxiety because of her on more than one occasion. In the end, the woman who was everything to him became the object of everything he hated for one reason, she was white.

Richard Fernandez has an interesting piece up over at the Belmont Club about Powell's possible motives for endorsing Obama -entitled "God's Green Earth." It might provide some material for you.

Rich, I was responding to Clarice's point about Obama's mom.

Clarice, I agree that it would have been better if Obama had reconciled with his mother. It's not like I don't have a mother myself, after all, and in fact we reconciled after many years of estrangement. But let's recall his history: abandoned by Dad first, then taken to Indonesia, then sent back (abandoned again) to live with the grandmother who he later said was uncomfortable around black men. Then she returned for a while, then left again.

You say "it's not like she abused him," but actually, it is like she abused him. In fact, I can tell you from experience, that being abandoned can be worse tham merely physical abuse.

I don't mean to jump on you about this; I'm just saying that among the many things I don't like about Obama, this is one I understand.

Basically, they allowed themselves to be "re-educated" - or as we say down South, "brainwashed" - into believing that they could redeem themselves in the eyes of the bashers by disavowing their core beliefs and turning on their erstwhile principal.

Considering Powell thinks Biden is the better choice for V.P.. I have to post this from the Corner. It made me laugh:

Popular But Not Sound [Yuval Levin]
Several folks here have commented on Joe Biden’s warning that electing Obama would invite severe tests from our enemies. My second favorite Bidenism of the day, though, has to be this bit, which came later in the same event, describing how people would react when an Obama administration makes decisions:

There are gonna be a lot of you who want to go, 'Whoa, wait a minute, yo, whoa, whoa, I don't know about that decision'," Biden continued. "Because if you think the decision is sound when they're made, which I believe you will when they're made, they're not likely to be as popular as they are sound. Because if they're popular, they're probably not sound.

But he doesn’t wink, so he’s a statesman.

Yes. And why absorb the criticism if you can rehabilitate yourself by blaming Bush.
Bush, as unpopular as he is, hasn't blamed. He's never blamed.

As for good men's reputations going bad under Bush, let me also point out that Mr. Obama has left some flotsam in his wake in a short period of time. 2 years ago, I never would have guessed Bill Clinton would be a Dem pariah.
You do not cross Obama and leave with your reputation in tact. The smartest Dem this cycle has been Al Gore. Arm's distance, all the way.

IIRC the target dance was an NCO dance at Fort Dix. Either way, not only fellow soldiers, but fellow blacks were the target.

Barack's mother: There is a timeline online which, because it is on a pro Obama page, is probably somewhat more giving than the facts might have been.

She apparently was concerned he wouldn't have a sense of his blackness, living in a foreign country -- so he says she taught him about it. In Indonesia I would have thought he might have trouble relating to his white American-ness also ....

But his mom really was in and out of his life. (The criticism of Sarah Palin's education is interesting in that S.A.D.O.S. spent 18 years getting her PhD.)

Didn't BO mention she had trouble getting diganosed? She was in Indonesia, for crying out loud. Not a top notch place for differential diagnosis of ovarian cancer.

Obama was very busy in 1995, the year his mom passed... he was chairman of the new CAC, and launched his political career at Ayers' home.

None of this is relevent -- except perhaps in light of his grandmother's illness.

Great about the upcoming radio gig Jane.

Hope no one else has said this, but if he asks you about Powell, be sure to include this.

McCain and Powell have been close friends for decades. Powell gives Palin as his reason for supporting Obama--yet he has never even bothered to meet her.

What would it have taken? How about a phone call? "Hey John, I have concerns and I'd like to meet her..." Nope, not even that little courtesy. Indeed, he didn't even tell McCain in advance. No Class.

Powell may be a hero of sorts to some, but after this, he's nothing but a backstabbing opprotunistic A-Hole as far as I'm concerned. He might be mad at Bush, but McCain was the guy that stood up for him when times were tough--and Obama's friends were calling for his hide. Remember all the battles with Rummy?

And excuse me, if there's one thing most people I know don't like it's a guy that betrays his friends.

I don't think Powell will have any effect on this election--except to tarnish his own image.
