Notice this story (the one Sue pointed to) is saying more or less exactly what DJ Drummond and Jay Cost have been pointing out: that there was little reason to believe that this time, the non-voters really would show up.
There was a call to a local radio station this morning that amused me. The man who called in said do those people voting for Obama understand socialism? You are required to work. That means every one who is able will be working. Or no soup for you.
The article that Ace of Spades references re: Vera Baker is at LUN. A driver who affirms dropping off Baker and Obama at a hotel late at night; might be thin stuff, but it would look better in 72-point font on Drudge. So let's have it, already; people have to be convinced to not vote for Obama as much as to vote for McCain.
Is anybody listening to Obama right now?
Has he explained how he's going to give people that currently don't have healthcare the health care Congress has?
Has he explained how he can make sure people can afford college tuition?
Has he explained how he is going to pay teachers a higher salary?
Simple and fightening facts: (1)Obama intentionally avoided making a record in the Illinois and U. S. Senate to prevent criticism of his base positions whn he ran for President and (2)we know from the Chicago interview that he sees wealth redistriibution as a civil rights issue missed by the Court but available via legislative and administrative action.
Any doubt where those background facts lead? I think not.
But traveling with Biden during this campaign has sometimes been like reporting on a politician packaged in shrink-wrap. While his windy, off-point pontification was the stuff of legend among his Senate colleagues, Biden is now leashed to a teleprompter even when he is talking in a high school gym that is three-quarters empty.
"The city of Chicago is planning for an election night rally that could draw a million people to Grant Park. Security is a major concern for Obama, his family and all the people who will attend the event."

The daily Presidential Tracking Poll shows Obama attracting 50% of the vote while McCain earns 47%. This is the first time McCain has been within three points of Obama in more than a month. Among those who “always” vote in general elections, Obama leads by just a single point. As for those who have not yet voted but are “certain” they will do so, the race is tied at 48%.Hispanic voters are more likely than others to say that something might come up to prevent them from voting.
Considering the swing in Ras, that's not a bad idea. We're heading toward the last minute of the last round and we can expect some more low blows to be thrown very soon. I actually think that McCain is fortunate that the MSM has successfully destroyed the remaining shreds of trust that they once held. Anything printed or said by the MSM from now on out is going to be met with a higher level of derision than has ever existed prior to this election. The MSM has earned its very well deserved demise.
So have a fair number of 'conservative' pundits who misunderstood Palin's impact.
Palin and Joe turned the tide. John McCain had the great perspicacity to recognize what the truly ignorant political cognoscenti haven't the wit understand. Rather unsurprisingly.
Whether it’s Joe the Plumber, or Joe the Gaffer, in each of the last three days John McCain appears to have cut into Barack Obama’s lead. It will be interesting to see if the weekly trend continues. If it does, John McCain can expect even better poll numbers over the next three days since each of those days’ poll releases will include a smaller weekend sample.
Well, I for one had almost given up all hope. There for a while I had to look up to see dirt.
It is still a mystery to me how anyone with an ounce of common sense would ever consider voting for BHO. I think this is the first time in my life I have been truly afraid for my country and our way of life.
Did anyone get to see Gov. Palin's speech on energy this morning? I thought it was excellent.
Rush said some of those LA Times workers were being offered a ton of money to come up with the video of BHO and his PLO buddy Khalidi - one can only hope.
Since it's an open thread, do you guys mind if I ask you what your favorite Halloween candy is? I am a complete freak for Sweet Tarts, absolutely addicted. I buy big bags of the damn things every Halloween season (the kind that are in the small inch long rolls like Smarties used to come in), and for the rest of the year I'm secretly slipping them to my favorite gradeschoolers whenever I chapperone my kids classes on Field Trips.
Perhaps your sickness TM, is a result of not pounding enough Sweet Tarts. Bite 'em I say, Bite 'em for a burst of flavor!
Key graf from Charlie's link to the McCain internals:
Typically a Republican candidate trails among African Americans on a survey by a margin of something like 78% to 14%. As a firm, we consistently warn our clients that on Election Day, they will underperform their polling margins with African American voters. If their tracking says 78% - 18%, they should expect to only carry 8% of the African American vote, as the Democrat candidate will typically carry more than 90% of the African American vote.
Senator Obama’s numbers are different than anything we have ever seen before among African Americans.
In most polls, McCain is losing these African American voters by margins like 97% to 1%.
This means when you see Senator Obama’s number in a survey, it already reflects his significant and full support among African American voters.
After you get done sifting a bit, what it says is that current polling is carrying about a 2% edge for H.Obama that would not normally appear until election day. It would be somewhat higher than 2% in VA and NC due to the higher percentage of black voters within the electorates of those states.
No sweet tarts for me - it has to be something chocolate - prefereably dark chocolate - milky way, kit kat and occasional 3 musketeers.
I actually bought full size bars to give out this year, none of those bite sized things. And then I had to hide them from myself so I don't dip into them.
Well, Rick, explain to me what that means as a practical matter.
Kaus has a good post:

If you're looking for evidence of a "Bradley"-like effect--in which preelection polls can be wildly off--one place to look is the polling on Ward Connerly's Civil Rights Initiative in Michigan. According to Connerly (in answer to an email query)
Some polls had us losing by 10 points the weekend before the election. We won by 16.
Results here. ... It seems clear, in that case at least, voters told pollsters the respectable PC answer they thought pollsters wanted to hear. ... Barack Obama was one of those campaigning (in radio spots) for the respectable PC side that lost. ... P.S.--Is McCain Yorty? Sherry Bebitch Jeffe argues (as have others) that there was no Bradley effect in Tom Bradley's 1982 gubernatorial race--the alleged ur-example. In Bradley's 1969 mayoral race against Sam Yorty, on the other hand .... 5:07 P.M."

Thats another interesting divide Jane, the Dark Chocolate-Regular Chocolate line of demarcation. I almost think its a male-female thing. I can tolerate dark chocolate, but only if its nibbled during a glass of Cabernet or Merlot. Otherwise its the Plebian Hershey's varieties for me. And what about those White Chocolate devotee's, are those guys crazy or what?
I love those black- and orange-wrapped peanut butter taffy kisses - Mary Jane brand is the original and best. Damn, I love those things. But kids usually don't.
We ordered these for the kids this year. Yeah, they look gross (they haven't arrived yet so I can't confirm). But kids like gross. Boo Licks
Clarice, the short answer is that it suggests not many undecideds are going to go for Obama; there practically aren't any undecided blacks, and undecided whites and hispanos are likely to go heavily for McCain. If, considering today's IBD, more than 3/4th of the undecideds go for McCain, McCain wins.
Then note from Krumm's piece that Tuesday has been the best day for Obama; this has always been explained as an effect of Republicans tending not to answer their phones as much on the weekends. But even on his best days, the margin is tightening.
Prediction: McCain takes a lead in some polls by Thursday.
Does Cadbury still rule the roast in Britania? Has our American Chocolate made any dent in the market over yonder, or is it received as weakly as our beer? Are you guy's Nestle'ers?
Abba Zabbas & Baby Ruths for me...between the filling removing taffy and the peanut butter inside....mmm mmm...been pilfering them from the Halloween stash for the kids....
am thinking maybe just greeting them at the door and saying, "sorry, since Obama is going to be president, we can't afford candy anymore"....scar 'em for life and make them permanent Republicans....
Woohoo! More Good BAD news about the MSM! From Media Bistro:
"Amazon.com is offering a subscription to Newsweek for $20 (90 percent off the cover price!) — 20 percent cheaper than the magazine's own Web site sells it. The mag chopped circulation figures in late 2007 and ad pages plummeted 22 percent in the first half of 2008, but as some point these desperate schemes to boost circ start to do more harm than good, don't they?"
Notice to All EmployeesAs of November 5, 2008, when President Obama is officially elected into office, our company will install a few new policies which are in keeping with his new, inspiring issues of change and fairness:
1. All salespeople will be pooling their sales and bonuses into a common pool that will be divided equally between all of you. This will serve to give those of you who are underachieving a “fair shake.”
2. All low level workers will be pooling their wages, including overtime, into a common pool, dividing it equally amongst yourselves. This will help those who are “too busy for overtime” to reap the rewards from those who have more spare time and can work extra hours.>/p>
3. All top management will now be referred to as “the government.” We will not participate in this “pooling” experience because the law doesn’t apply to us.
4. The “government” will give eloquent speeches to all employees every week, encouraging it’s workers to continue to work hard “for the good of all.”
5. The employees will be thrilled with these new policies because it’s “good to spread the wealth.” Those of you who have underachieved will finally get an opportunity; those of you who have worked hard and had success will feel more “patriotic.”
6. The last few people who were hired should clean out their desks. Don’t feel bad, though, because President Obama will give you free healthcare, free handouts, free oil for heating your home, free food stamps, and he’ll let you stay in your home for as long as you want even if you can’t pay your mortgage.
John Ryan, IMO, hiding his record started long before the Illinois Senate. He's apparently still hiding his birth certificate, his Columbia school records, his Pakistan trip, any pro American friends, etc. Americans know a whole lot more about Gov Palin than they know about Obama. What they do know about Obama, about his terrorists friends, about his trip to Pakistan? Why is his silence, his hiding his record, acceptable to any American voter?
Orson Scott Card --- author of Ender's Game, lifelong D, who voted for O in the primary --- is voting for McCain.
A lot of us really wanted to elect you as America's first African-American president.
But there are things more important to our future than mere tokenism. You should only be our President if you are the best person for the job, and you clearly are not.
We don't need a president who hasn't the courage to admit that his previous policy failed and openly change his mind -- the way President Bush did when he determined to change strategy and execute the surge.
We saw your true colors when you sneered at white middle-class voters who cling to guns and religion because they're bitter, as if an entire class of "those people" can be analyzed and dismissed in a sentence.
McCain was not my choice for President at the beginning of the campaign a couple of years ago, Mr. Obama. You were. I rooted for you. I voted for you as recently as the North Carolina primary.
Obviously, I have changed my mind. Why?
I learned a little more about McCain. I learned a lot more about you.
OT: Does anyone have a suggestion for a self-publisher. My son's MIL painted some extraordinary pics for a children's book. A book agent was enthusiastic about the project and loved the artwork but was unable to find a publisher, and I want this women's work to be seen and recognized. I'm thinking of going ahead with it as a book in two versions:English and Japanese.
I see a number of sites online but some seem awfully expensive and I don't want to start up with a company I can't trust.
Thanks.
The more I learn about Obammy the smaller he looks.
I'm hoping that's the main reaction from the audience for tonight's Obamathon. Can you say "overexposure"?
I thought his call for people to take the day off on election day was hugely presumptuous. It's as if people have nothing to do with their lives more important than obamadulation. If he gets elected we're going to start seeing larger-than-life Obama statues and murals at major city squares, just like in all those despotic countries that Obama wants to dialogue with.
It would motivate otherwise lackadaisical O voters.
I was wondering about that, too. Though I honestly believe that a certain percentage (2-3% or maybe more) of Obama's support is so soft that it's not going to materialize regardless of the state of the polls.
Think about it this way - Kerry was not a likable guy. Even hardcore Dems didn't really like him, but he wasn't Bush, so they turned out in big numbers for that reason. Obama by contrast has the rock star thing going. That means the proportion of his soft support - the folks that fall for the rock star hype but are unreliable voters for whatever reason - is almost certainly higher than Kerry's. I think this is a recipe for an even greater number of no-shows at the polls (in combo with the Bradley Effect and everything else that's been discussed).
Roger's blog was my favorite for the family of commenters during the 2004 campaign. I looked back at the archives and see that many of JOM's fans were hanging around there then.
Chaco--There's not much money in most children's books so no agent will spend a lot of time on it..He took it to three or four of the biggest--they loved the pics but weren't interested and he gave up.I told the artist (Mitzi) but she kept on anyway. She'd done a few sketches for the proposal but now went ahead and did a whole portfolio which she sent me. They are utterly charming and I don't want to let her down.
Jim, I'll check into Amazon, too.
The cat's a bengal so if we get this going, I'll offer a small percentage of the profits to a bengal society that research cardiopathy problems in the breed.
The Amazon operation is very professional looking,Jim. I might just spend the extra books and turn it over to them once I write the text and get it translated for the Japanese version. (Probably easier to do it bi-lingually in one book)
Okay, looks like a classic "sell on the news" dip followed by relatively lots of buyers, but not many people wanting to sell. I'm guessing the market closes above 9300 today, with people (for a change) wanting to be long at the open tomorrow.
Fox has the story up now on the internal Obama memo asking for GOTV help in NC, GA, FL, and OH. Just thought this was funny from the part asking people to come to FL:
2. We also need help with our Faith Outreach Program — people who will be here before Sunday morning to attend services, possibly speak on behalf of Barack Obama and help with GOTV churches and African American voters in general. We also need help with Hispanic churches, progressive denominations like Episcopal, United Church of Christ, etc.
Speaking from experience, if they need help with Episcopal churches they are REALLY in trouble. LOL
Americans are tired of the O show. Just like they were of Happy Days when it decided to let Fonzie jump a shark.
Tonight: A Very Special O Show. Tune in to see how O handles it when his girlfriend Lady Liberty the Plumber decides it's enough already with the unaccomplished noodnick and his sketchy friends and puts his suitcase, Marxist-structuralist books, and bong out on the front stoop. O will hold forth in a lengthy discourse about why Lady should still love him, whilst she brings home the bacon, fries it up in the pan, and, failing to pay attention to O's umpteenth profusion of blather, thinks about maybe running for something - city council or governor.
Will O wear thin? Will Lady go back to her old main squeeze of 72 years, Johnny? Tune in tonight! I know I won't!
Clarice, yes, I recall it looked good. I have a work in progress (a college textbook) and was thinking of just self-publishing instead of going through the rigamaroll of publishers. I wouldn't do an ebook, though, as too many people will simply copy it for their friends ad infinitum. I'd only do the hard copy.
Maybe someone can tell me where I heard the following story; I've been telling it to everyone for a couple of weeks (since I saw it somewhere), and it always gets a good laugh:
A man goes to visit a Democrat couple he's friends with. The talk of the day is presidential politics, and the couple's eight-year-old daughter chimes in with "When I grow up I'm going to be president". "Oh", says the man, "what will you do when you're president?" "I'll give lots of money to the homeless people, so that they can buy houses and nice things", replies the little girl. "That's wonderful, but you don't have to be president to start doing that. If you come over my house and mow the lawn and pull the weeds and do some chores, I'll give you 50 dollars, and you can bring the 50 dollars to the homeless man downtown and he can use it to help buy a house". The little girl thinks for a minute, and says "Hey, why doesn't the homeless guy do the mowing and weeding himself, and you just give him the 50 dollars?". The man replies "Welcome to the Republican Party!".
The husband and I just finished voting (absentee) and I'm waiting to hear if I'll be able to rearrange my schedule and drive down to Vegas to join McCain's GOTV efforts (apparently northern Nevada is already awash in volunteers, but they do need more help in the greater Las Vegas area if any of you Southern Californians are interested), so I thought I'd drop by and see if y'all are planning to live blog O's infomercial this evening.
Just read a tsk tsk editorial from the LAT taking That One to task for his "cheesy" commercial (One half expects Obama to be introduced by a pitchman in a loud sweater: "But wait, there's more! If you act by Nov. 4, you also get the foreign policy expertise of Sen. Joe Biden!" LOL). But even so, they manage a good bit of McCain directed snark:
For Obama, the decision seems to be based on the fact that he has raked in train-loads of campaign cash, and he can't possibly spend it all if he confines himself to battleground states. So he's trying to run up his popular vote count nationwide and increase what George W. Bush used to call his "political capital." If that seems a little bit like USC's football team going for a touchdown when the score is already 62-0, well, nobody ever said politicians were good sports.
Still, it's hard not to feel bad for John McCain, even if this page prefers Obama. McCain may genuinely have thought he was doing the honorable thing by accepting public financing, but his $84-million allotment from the Treasury is being dwarfed by Obama's fundraising machine, which took in $150 million in September alone. McCain supporters can always switch to cable on Wednesday night; AMC is showing "Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday," a horror film that might suit their mood. LUN
Gotta love the LAT. Apparently the election's already a blowout and the only thing left unknown at this point is the final score. Don't know about you, but I have to say, my mood is actually pretty damn good.
" A former Project Vote person has testified that the Obama Campaign had ongoing ties to both Project Vote and ACORN."
Joe Biden wants to know if you're kidding, if that's a serious statement. Because the Obama campaign has had nothing to do with ACORN, it's just an organization from around the neighborhood.
Sukie: Neil Cavuto just had Sarah's Dad on a telephone interview. He is campaigning for her in Las Vegas and said the support in that area is overwhelming. He said he couldn't believe the outpouring of support.

After you get done sifting a bit, what it says is that current polling is carrying about a 2% edge for H.Obama that would not normally appear until election day. It would be somewhat higher than 2% in VA and NC due to the higher percentage of black voters within the electorates of those states.

No sweet tarts for me - it has to be something chocolate - prefereably dark chocolate - milky way, kit kat and occasional 3 musketeers.
I actually bought full size bars to give out this year, none of those bite sized things. And then I had to hide them from myself so I don't dip into them.

Mounds.
Has to have chocolate.
Starburst is close. Probably not coincidentally, Starburst is a fruit flavored candy but has lots of unhealthy coconut oils.

Well, Rick, explain to me what that means as a practical matter.
Kaus has a good post:
"___________________________

175 large at this point.
And the rumor is that Obama now sees them losing NC and FL, and struggling in VA.

Dark chocolate, yuck, unless it is coupled with heavy peppermint, such as a Peppermint Patty. My fav is PayDay, love the little mini Paydays.

Posted by: jimmyk | October 29, 2008 at 03:25 PM

Gotta love the LAT. Apparently the election's already a blowout and the only thing left unknown at this point is the final score. Don't know about you, but I have to say, my mood is actually pretty damn good.
Feel better soon, TM.
