The left still has Hilda Solis, and may well have card check elections. The left will also dominate the federal court appointments of His Zeroness. Plus, although using global warming as a wedge to regulate and tax everything has hit a small speedbump recently (namely, the facts), it will be front and center in the next Administration's public opinion manipulation arsenal. So the left will still do OK.

Now, speaking of beacons of truth on the airwaves, we have our own Jane, who is most likely fresh from her joustings with Mr. Vaughan on Central Mass. radio. What happened today, Jane?

octr

Federal court appointments? Blago's appointing.

clarice

I heart Mickey because he's smart and honest..I sometimes disagree with him, but on unions he's been absolutely correct and candid.

BobS

TC: You've made a point that I've been making. With all the MSM adulation over Obama's "centrist" picks for cabinet posts, he has several stealth candidates through which he can truly advance his own hidden - yet clearly leftists agendas. Browner, Solis, Holder and his WH science liason serve his purpose.

matt

I think the hard realities of the next few years will temper Obama's appointments. The UAW is making no friends, and the SEIU is coming under much greater scrutiny for their shenanigans, so perhaps that may blunt Solis' desire to stack the deck.

The theory of global warming is coming under even greater assault from credible scientific sources, with the economy also providing its impetus towards sensibility. So overall, we'll have to wait and see how the first 6 months play out. Obama is running out of wiggle room.

the real question is why we have heard nothing out of Obama on any issue of policy so far. Even though we can only have one president at a time, I think it would be legitimate for O to speak out on some of the issues, unless of course his views are diametrically opposed to Bush's, which I don't think is true in many cases.

Jane

What happened today, Jane?

According to Amy, she wanted to throw shoes at the radio for the 1st 20 minutes. Dick went on and on about something which morphed into how much better looking Sarah Palin was than Hillary and some such drivel. I finally reminded him that this wasn't about sexism, or attractiveness but rather media bias.

Then he asked me for my 2009 predictions. I had 10 (including Glenda's - thank you). When I suggested that Gaza was a big deal and Obama came across as clueless about it, Dick went on and on about giving him (O) a chance. I told him to not ask me for "predictions" if he didn't want to hear them. So the first part of the show was not great.

The rest was better (I hope).

I recorded it, so finally I will get to hear it.

Dick did ask me to listen to the Obama inaugural speech on the radio with him and do a prolonged show on inauguration day which I think will be really fun.

?seeing

It's not fair to say Obama is the son of a CIA informant killer because he took all that evil and used it to get money for his poor friends. He became a leader of Peace and Fairness and poverty in the world, unlike his father we will give him a chance to lead the world..............

Truly worthy to be called the best by all things.

Wiggle room, bubble closing in? He's destroyed America and plans on letting it die and everyone knows it.

Rick Ballard

Jane,

Here is a prep resource for the speech. I liked Reagan's second inaugural speech for its specificity. I wouldn't expect Zero to get much beyond Clintonesque blather but you'll never know it from the fawning adulation of the sycophants in the media.

I would prod ole Dick with 'what do you think he meant by' for the entire aftermath.

Captain Hate

Dick went on and on about giving him (O) a chance.

I'll give Zero more of a chance than those pukes gave GWB, which isn't setting the bar too high.

Captain Hate

I wouldn't expect Zero to get much beyond Clintonesque blather but you'll never know it from the fawning adulation of the sycophants in the media.

Slick's windbag speeches were almost as lacking in content as he was in character. I defy anybody to recall anything more memorable than "I didn't have sex with that woman....Miss Lewinsky"; which was of course a lie.

clarice

Jane, frpm what i can tell about the show, you must be getting mash letters by now.

Thomas Collins

Thanks for the summary and the heads up on the inaugural day show, Jane. I am clearing my calendar for Jan. 20th and heading for Central Mass. to listen to the inauguration speech (which I hadn't planned to do until I heard you and DV will be doing a show on it) and then to enjoy the show.

Is the show starting before the speech?

BobS

Define "giving him a chance".

Does that mean just agree with everything he does? Not criticize mistakes? Not offer differences of opinion?

Methinks not.

bgates

Jane, ask him how proud he is that Republican success in the War on Terror, our natural respect for the peaceful transition of power, and the complete lack of (anti-black) racism in the country after 7 years of GWB combine to mean that the first black president faces such negligible danger to his person that he can afford to name a nonentity like Biden as VP.

matt

I'm fetching my aluminum foil helmet right now trying to parse seeing's post.....

it's the thetan's and Xenu, I tell ya....

Jane

Clarice,

What's a "mash" letter?

TC,

I'll record the show and post a link. In listening to today's show I've got to figure out how to regulate the sound, otherwise it's tough to listen to.

Jane

BTW Dick's theory is that for every minute O's speech goes past 20 minutes, we will have one bad year ahead.

kim

AKA mash note. A fan letter, bordering, or getting beyond it, on adulation.
================================

Thomas Collins

That would be great, Jane. I'm sure you and DV will have better commentary than anywhere else. I would love to hear it even if I can't make it out to Central Mass. on Jan. 20th.

So, clarice and kim, are my enthusiastic posts on Jane's show mash notes? I view them as hard-headed assessments of the facts!

Jane

Not bloody likely.

Vicki Eiseman just filed suit against the NY Times.

Let's hope it is the final nail in the coffin.

Jane

"Give him a chance" means make all your predictions rosy ones. I declined altho I tried to keep it upbeat. My first prediction was a whole new generation of new teenaged smokers imitating the uber cool dude.

kim

There's no contradiction there, Thomas.
========================

Pal2Pal (Sara)

Dick did ask me to listen to the Obama inaugural speech on the radio with him and do a prolonged show on inauguration day

Oh you poor dear, how will you ever stay awake thru an entire O speech?

I intend to be as far away from any broadcasting medium that day as I can get.

PD

Dick went on and on about giving him (O) a chance

We hear this line a lot lately. Alan Colmes says it a lot, for example. I have yet to hear a reason why.

And, like BobS, I wonder what it means, exactly. In Colmes' case at least, it seems to mean holding off from criticizing Obama until he's President. But again, no reason why is given. Do liberals ever refrain from critical analysis of a conservative appointee before the appointee takes office? I trow not.

The corollary to "give him a chance" is, "why do you want to damage or weaken him before he's even President?" Of course the answer to this is clear: Because he's a dangerous man, and a weakened dangerous man is less dangerous. This stuff we hear from McCain and Huckabee and the like about "wanting him to be successful" strikes me as wrongheaded and in itself dangerous.

jimmyk

Why do people like Kaus and Ann Althouse, who seem so sensible and level-headed, support Obama? I don't get it.

Pal2Pal (Sara)

Why do people like Kaus and Ann Althouse, who seem so sensible and level-headed, support Obama? I don't get it.

I don't know about Kaus, but in Alhouse's case, she wants to be thought of as "uber-cool" just like the O-man.

jimmyk

I predict card check fails. If someone like George McGovern is opposed to it, I'm guessing a few Senate Dems will oppose it as well, and the Republicans will be able to block it. No matter how the left dresses it up ("Freedom of Choice" or whatever they're calling it) to the majority of Americans it stinks.

I also predict, unfortunately, that Ms. Iseman will lose her suit, because the article only quoted people who raised the possibility of an affair, it didn't make any claims about the veracity of those claims. It was sleazy gutter journalism, but (though IANAL) I can't see the Times losing this one.

bgates

I tried to keep it upbeat.
Just phrase things the way he does. Remember Zero's promise to "save or create" 2 1/2 million jobs? I predict 20 times that many jobs will be salvageable during his first term.

BobS

jimmyk:

I agree with respect to card check. National issues with UAW and the Service Employees (via Blago - a gift that keeps on....) will give folks pause. And I'd imagine there are some Dems how are grateful to have a way out now. McGovern and Sharpton (fascinating) have been remarkably helpful with their nay vote.

kim

He's expecting to be offered a chance he wouldn't otherwise get. Affirmative Action, all the way.
====================================

Jane

I also predict, unfortunately, that Ms. Iseman will lose her suit, because the article only quoted people who raised the possibility of an affair, it didn't make any claims about the veracity of those claims.

But the issue really isn't the affair but rather sullying her good name which impacted her earning power as a lobbyist. I will be rooting for her.

jimmyk

But the issue really isn't the affair but rather sullying her good name which impacted her earning power as a lobbyist.

Perhaps she should be naming the "unnamed sources" as defendants, and demanding that the Times reveal who they are. They are the ones who sullied her name; the Times can claim that nothing in the story is false, since they just quote sources. I'm rooting for her too, but I'm just doubtful that it's a strong case. Maybe the lawyers here can comment.

Rocco

You need a babysitter to watch your infant child. Do you hire the neighbors, sisters, 18 year old daughter whom you know nothing about? Why not just give her a chance?

Jane

Perhaps she should be naming the "unnamed sources" as defendants, and demanding that the Times reveal who they are. They are the ones who sullied her name;

That's not how it works, unless she is a public figure and she is not. The "unnamed sources" did not publish the libel, the NY Times did.

BobS

Kaus is a Dem, but one with sanity.

Captain Hate

Couldn't Iserman's attorneys make the discovery process pretty uncomfortable for Pinch et al?

Jane

We can only hope Capt.

clarice

Yes, but to establish there was no malice--the NYT will have to name names or pay up.Granted the malice is an issue only with a public figure BUT when it comes to damages, I think it certainly is relevant-Also, should the paper claim it was an innocent error on an issue the public had a right to know, the names of the sources would reveal whether there were any sources of how reliable they were as sources and whether taking anything they said seriously was negligent of the NYT.

Jane

The Times Ombudsman at the time called the story "irresponsible" so we know it was beyond malicious. The Times OTOH "stands by its story". The only thing I worry about is a NY Judge and jury.

clarice

The public figure rule is a higher hurdle than a non public figure has to jump to win--If Iseman is not a public figure, and the story is untrue and defamed her, she wins, of course. But I don't think in assessing damages that she's barred from demanding the info re the sources.

Boatbuilder

I only read Kaus occasionally, but he's generally on the ball (why is he a lefty? is what I usually think.)

His previous piece on Caroline Kennedy actually makes me think better of her. Asking the supposedly tough but actually disgustingly fawning press corps whether they should be working for women's magazines is pretty good, and surprisingly catty.

clarice

Jane, The Hill article says suit is in Virginia.

clarice

More financial tsooris for Pinch.

Topsecretk9

I wonder if Fitz precedent and Hatfill will have in effect on this suit, if so great!

hrtshpdbox

The world is a little bit upside down. First, Caroline Kennedy, who seemed lifeless and dimwitted, makes the great "women's magazine" comment to the Times. It's a howler, and what other Dem has dared addess the Old Grey Lady so dismissively? Then, with today's Burris announcement, I couldn't help but notice that Blago, a crook and purported dim bulb, is actually very charismatic. Relative to the rest of the whole cast of Chicago characters, and bearing in mind that Blago "needed the money" largely to defend himself against Fitz, I'm not so sure I wish the worst of the cookies to crumble on him.

clarice

Blago's making monkeys of them all.

I am certain, Burris will be at minimum a character witness for Blago and a courtroom supporter.

HEH HEH HEH

Thomas Collins

Iseman is pretty savvy. She wouldn't be doing this on a lark. Pinch may have to mortgage more property than he thought.

Would someone please remind me why, even in certain GOP and conservative circles, the NYT is still considered at least a semi-serious newspaper?

PaulL

If Iseman were to win, I guess she'd be the new owner of the NYTimes's only good asset, their building.

jimmyk

The "unnamed sources" did not publish the libel, the NY Times did.

You're right, it's just that the way it was characterized, it was about appearances and not reality. I'm not taking their side, I'm just speculating as to how it will go. I hope she wins, but I wouldn't bet on it.

Doing a little googling, I came up with this set of guidelines on how to avoid a libel suit, including:

4. Try to get the "other side of the story." A good reporter sticks to the facts and not to some bystander's opinion of what might be the truth if the facts were known. The eventual "write-up" of a story should be objective and never colored by the enthusiasms or opinions of the reporter.

5. Particular care should be taken in publishing quotations. The fact that a person is quoted accurately is not in itself a defense to a subsequent libel action, if the quoted statement contains false information about someone.

The Times arguably failed on 5 even if they claim 4.

Jane

Blago's making monkeys of them all.

And isn't it fun to watch.

Jimmy the operative case is Sullivan v the NY times (on the public figure part). If the NY times wants to avoid the libel charge they can prove their story is true.

I can barely wait.

Clarice,

Any insight on a VA jury against the NY Times?

Jane

Actually the burden of proof is on the plaintiff, but still...

clarice

Depends on what part of Virginia. Outside of say Arlington and parts of Fairfax, I expect it's as bad for the paper as it gets...esp as it involves sullying a woman's name and reputation.

Jane

Iseman complaint. LUN

narciso

Sorry about the lapse, plugging that printer, caused me to lose connection, plus some of the things read re; our Sarah's family, made me a little too angry to blog.So Blago's thrown the gauntlet down, why didn't he pick Burris before, could have saved himself all sorts or trouble.
sarc. Iseman deserves to win, but frankly
after Esquire v. D.C (the Craig Unger case) I don't see too much fruit in a libel action.
Someone made an interesting comparison, Morgan Freeberg in fact, re; he Thatcher/
Palin connection not Thatcher, who ctually found the defense relatively weak, but Howard Roark, the headstrong hero of Ayn Rand's "The Fountainhead", loosely based on Frank Lloyd Wright, tormented by the hack Ellsworth Toohey; who does that sound like.
It's kind of a different perspective to consider, she challenges way too many preconceptions and shibboleths about everything' reason why Warren chose her as person of the year, who Vanderleun & Weidner concurred/ He crafts a really cutting phrase, first "Republicans they thirst for death," now "Better dead than led by Palin", hopefully he's exaggerating
for effect. He, I, Tim Blsir all concur what else is to be saif on the matter.

glenda

Oooooo...Thank you, Jane, for remembering me. I wish we all could hear your show. We would make it a ratings bonanza! And, bravo to Ms.Isemann, now-If Sarah could just
sue Andrew Sully and the New Rep. for their horrendous baby-stories!!! Or was it KOS? One in the same.
Does Blago wear spectators? He does like to strut, although I enjoy how he makes Durbin,Obama,Rahm,Podesta,Axelrod, and Daley squirm! And, my lawyer friends, isn't it a little non-ABA behavior for Fitz to be offering up material not presented in a court of law to the Illinois legislature? What about the left's almight "right to privacy" they claim for every law they want to write in the constitution without amendment?

clarice

Thanks, Jane/.very interesting.

narciso

It was Atlantic with Andrew, with help from Kos. Jann Wenner gave the name to the 'tanning booth media at US Weekly, the New Republic's Noam Schrieber, said he harbored 'resentments, because she didn't like corrupt figure in office, fancy that, that's also where the doodles controversy
came from. Axelrod & co, floated the secessionist slander, through Winner on Youtube. Comason interviewed those she put away as if that was a bad thing. I'm getting angry all over again, at what these
bastards did to her, with the full complicity and cooperation of the Media.
All right calm down. Jane you have to find a way to record, transcribe these tapes.
I was telling you I was getting too angry to post and it's coming back now. I see that she really is breaking through in some places, that poll which I saw referenced on Surber, but I don't see why it shouldn't be everywhere

PaulL

Narciso,

If we're lucky, the newspapers will take care of themselves.

LUN

It'd be swell if something similar happened to TV.

PaulV

Jane, the suit was file in Richmond, aka the rocket docket. The NYTimes also committed the crime of sexism by inferring that a woman has no existence but sexual.

glenda

She IS, Narciso--the snobs that belittle her are in a quandary now that Caroline is requesting a seat in the Senate. The experience factor, presentation to the media, the actuality of working, being of service to fellow man; not just a token figurehead--karma is sweet. Sarah looks like Lady Thatcher compared to Princess Caroline. And Blago, of all pols, helped refine the argument. The media airheads, some of whom are willing to lie, cheat&plagerize would make Goebels proud--there are a few sheep who listen to them, but they are lost sheep, have been wandering in the desert for a while. The editors, publishers, writers of Time, Newsweek, Atlantic,Vanity Fair, NYTimes, Wash Post, MiamiHerald,Chicago Trib, latimes, and on and on have a goal to destroy any conservative or moderate with leadership and character before "the People" make their minds up for themselves.
They believe in free copy, loose tongues, and no rules. And if you're a really decent human being, especially if you believe in God, have character and pander less, they try to destroy you. It isn't that easy anymore. There are too many JOM, PM, INstapundits, and so on that will scream out and blog the truth.
And now the Paparazzi is making O into our new black Hercules-yea, that's just what I want in a President, somebody who runs away from his responsibilities fast, with his manboobs leading the way with an excalibur sword....stuck in a rock!!

I came back from the Christmas trip to my parents' house to find stuff in my fridge that looks like the Iron Lady compared to Caroline Kennedy.

"Kaus is a Dem, but one with sanity."

We now have a new standard for Dems with sanity. Sure, Kaus is not a Move-on, Kos type Democrat, just a regular Democrat that supported Kerry and Obama. For this he is God's gift to Democrats? Put me in the unimpressed column.

narciso

Sorry about that, have to blog with a power cord and an ethernet cable, since the main
network was down. Battery shut down on me, before I could post anything else. Ended up watching the cable shows, even Countdown with the sound turned down, when they had B-roll of Sarah. Instinctively, I know what you say is true, they're idiots or the stronger word in my language, scoundrels.
It just hurts, not anger me that they still have 'air superiority' and it's not just with regards to her. The presumption is that Israel should agree to a ceasefire, now that's stupidity on stilts except for Bolton, hopefully our next secretary of State. Why would one quit, while one is in the middle of the objective. That being said I'm not confident of the Olmert/Livni
govt, being willing to follow through on this. If it was Bibi in charge, I'd feel better, but I don't know if the rest of Likud has that determination either. He has real determination and drive, everyone else is near beer; Sharon in retrospect, was a poor substitute, he was too worn out, to really make a committment besides crushing the lst intifada. You see the analogy I'm going for here, right.

I once thought I could go into journalism or government, tendered a few applications..
I'm interested in current events, like serving the public, not that concerned about money. Boy was I wrong, clearly I'm too rational for this crew. Had I gone to law school, would have wished to become a prosecutor, don't think I'd have the conviction to be a defense attorney; unless I knew my client was truly not guilty, the Libby and Black cases come to mind. Went ot graduate school for a while, where they insisted on the rigors of economic models and FASB accounting standards. Do you know how funny that sounds now, after Enron, WorldCom, Global Crossing, Tyco, and now
Lehman, Washington Mutual, Bank of America,
CitiGroup. Have worked on elections and in support capacity; do the rules matter anymore, they certainly didn't in Ohio, or Pennsylvania, or Virginia; apparently not in Minnesota. Is there any field except for some corners of the blogosphere, where truth and integrity, mean anything anymore,
I certainly should try to learn some HTML and find a blog of my own; This can't be
Narciso's obsessive blog 1/3 of the time, although I'm glad for the space, that Tom concedes me.

It's been my dissapointment with the lack of integrity and truth in all these fields, where cant replaces actual wisdom and knowledge that has driven me to blog. It's also driven my splenetic, untrammelled defense of Governor Palin, because she alone
seems to have an instinct for the truth and for doing the right things; and look at the 'slings and arrows of outrageous fortune
she's had to face for it, what her family has been subject to. I'm using the formal address because I can't say I knoe her enough to really be so informal; a little late there, right.I know it's in part because she is better at a quantum level than all these pygmies out there. Sumner cut your losses, the Lusitania wasn't listing as much as CBS under Couric. There's a bit of karma, that her hatchet job stunt probably lost her some audience.
Does GE really have that much money to burn with MSNBC; can they really afford to be that supine

That's been an often stated concern, sometimes calmly, sometimes hysterically;
the wolves lie in wait, along the homestead,
but that Paul L and Clarice have to calm me down about. I might as well be speaking pig latin, if I tried to communicate with my neighbors about how I feel, well there's some you can trust. My generation, the Xers, 'mindnumbed robots' in general, although they are exceptions to the rule. I feel more confident in this setting, even though I haven't a fraction of the life experience that you have, it's all being book learnin' for the most part. I know Clarice and others told me, not to downgrade
my insights I'm working on that. It's conforting but it's a little odd an indication of the "ClockWork Orange" world we live in. Where right of center folk have to go along, nod attentively as the latest bon mot is regaled as wisdom, suppress a grim chuckle at F-150s or SUVs with Obama stickers. talk about not getting the point of the lesson. Where an associate of Paul Ehrlich is going to be anywhere near scientific and energy policy. Madness, or it might be Sparta, I can't tell which anymore. An interior secretary from the west, whose opposed to developing the region's resources. That's just two example that keep me up at night, others I've cited before. you're right Kim, not only did he dodge it, he ignored his constitutional obligations (re; the bailout) Of course, Letterman had his jibe at this; clearly indicating he was promoted well above his level as a weatherman in Muncie. I agree with him, that talking to Katie Couric, was a bad idea, like the oft told line of trying
to teach a pig anything; but that insight is above his head. What would he actually do in a real crisis, well let's just say precedent isn't reassuring, considering debate statements, published essays, et al on various topics.

I was a little disheartened about the whole Kyra Sedwick,/Medoff matter. I too
follow "The Closer" quite frequently, more now since '24 is probably not going to be up to snuff anymore; and I'm going to get nauseous over all the glorious political news upcoming

That line about carrying a torch for Sarah, was only half in gest. You guys do see right through me on that score, than again I've given plenty of ammunition. Had I been this fervent with actual relationships, I would have likely ticked some people off
most severely. I'm bound to bedissapointed, people can't often live up to unrealistic expectations. It's probably a function of my dissapointment with all other aspects of politics, particularly this year. When Black was pronounced White, Lies became Truth; Honesty and integrity, became tradeable commodities. Media, Government, Business seem broken, whether irreversably is unclear. We know that the current short
term plans will do little to solve it; and much to weaken it. Looks like it's going to take a lot of cider, to wash this year away, and probably something stronger.

Someone on another tread, asked about reliable history of Cuba; preferably in English. Well you can't go wrong with Jaime Suchliki's From Columbus to Castro, if you want a more recent take Nestor Carbonell's
"And the Russians came" on the post '61 era.

clarice

You've spent a lot of your life absorbing information, Narciso. Now might be a good time to practice organizing what you know and the insights you've gained to communicate all that to others. I think there's lots of room for a conservsative hispanic-American columnist/blogger/broadcaster and i wish you'd give it some serious attention.

PD

From the comments to the Kass article:

Why can't Blago conduct his own internal investigation? He can then produce a self-exonerating report, and announce it at a news conference. Ta-da, problem solved!

Indeed. Who could gainsay him, after the Obama Team's stunt?

It's a real shame that the Democrat Party is returning to its racist roots and threatening to refuse to seat a black man who is obviously more qualified than the Senator whom he would replace. Will Robert Byrd wear his Klan robes when he (as the eldest Democrat Senator) speaks to the lynch mob?

Jane

Boy Rick, that says it all. That is exactly what every democrat would say if the situation was reversed. You have the tactic down pat, and I'm stealing it.

centralcal

PD: I think that Kass commenter has a brilliant idea! In fact, I think every Pol under any cloud of suspicion at all, should use the Obama Model and announce it as such; "Following the precedent of the Obama Model, I have investigated myself, found myself innocent of any wrong doing, and have exonerated myself."

And from everything that is said by Porter, Matt, Gabriel, etc; does the Chicago State Legislature, have any grounds to challenge him. As for the Senate, Harry Reid repeating the Adam Clayton Powell case, forty years later; that's not happening. More popcorn for everyone, and a cinnamon pretzel.
