Here is a link from a local ABC station where an informant claims he gave the feds info on Blago as a bookie who paid off the mob years ago.

LUN

clarice

Sneed is the go to leakee apparently. And who leaked this to her and why. I suppose Jason Leopold and Eckenrode are indisposed right now.

centralcal

Good morning. Byron York reminds us today that Fitz's real skill is in perjury traps.

Never mind the crimes, honey, just get your story about it straight! ha!

I am with Jane (on another thread) - I am having trouble with Jesse Jr. being an informant and Senate Candidate #5. Maybe he was playing both sides?

bad

Here is the link to the Jesse Jackson, Jr. story from AP.

LUN

Appalled

If Rahm is making some 20-odd calls to Blago, (as opposed to two or three), there's a political problem here. And, yeah, this begns to feel like the bear trap Fitz set for Libby.

Of course, this tip could be this scandal's equivalent of the imminent arrest of Rove.

if this story IS true, Rahm is ging to have to spend a lot of time with (and money on) lawyers. And I think it's going to be difficult being a Chief of Staff if, at the same time, he's having to cover his rear end all day long.

Ranger

21 seperate contacts on tape? And that doesn't include possible face to face meetings with anyone. That is a lot of back and forth for just negotiating nothing more than a show of appriciation.

I wonder if any those conversations include something from Rahm to the effect of 'this comes directly from Barack, you're going to have to wait at least a year or two for a paying job out of this.'

Ranger

I also saw an interesting take from Rick Moran that argued why the job horse trading crossed the line in this case. Blago was not just asking for a job, he made it clear that what he was really looking for was the money from the job in a specific pay range. The job was just a vehicle for the money.

kim

You reckon he can make a coupla dozen calls without mentioning the boss? Well, maybe, because he had to call so many times because the boss couldn't decide how not to leave his fingerprints. Oh, Fitz must be having fits unless he's nailed Obama, too. You decide.
=======================================

clarice

Most of the Libby case leaks were false reports IIRC..In any event, I think it wise to consider all these leaks to have been planted by some interested party or another with no necessary realtionship to the truth.

Ranger

My guess is that this stuff is coming, at least in part, from Harris. He is in the process of trying to get the best deal he can out of this. I imagine he thinks that if he can put enough presure on Rahm, Fitz may fear being replaced in January and will offer him more now to get the deal before he leaves. It wouldn't be dificult for Harris to look through his cell phone and count up the number of calls, then add in the ones that he knows Rahm made directly to Blago.

MayBee

if this story IS true, Rahm is ging to have to spend a lot of time with (and money on) lawyers. And I think it's going to be difficult being a Chief of Staff if, at the same time, he's having to cover his rear end all day long.

Unless he's on Fitzgerald's good side. Colin Powell and Dick Armitage didn't have to waste a lot of time and money on lawyers. Fitz just decided they were telling the truth.

MayBee

Most of the Libby case leaks were false reports IIRC

True.
Although one of the most famous false leaks, the 2x4x6 leak was the very thing that changed the internal investigation into a 'special' one.

bad

Byron York is hitting hard at Fitz.

LUN

Ranger

Yes. We need a 1x2x3 story to really get this investigation rolling! One elected official told two senior staffers to construct a three way deal to ensure there were no fingerprints on the purchase of a Senate seat.

bad

Maybee Scooter will be pardoned by O after he takes office.

Pofarmer

Judging from comments over at newagtalk.com, nobodies real impressed with Vilsack for Sec of Ag. And Salazar for Interior? Lord, Help us.

Ranger

Of course there is always the posibility that these leaks about what they have on Rahm are coming from the investigation itself to make sure he has his story in line before the interviews. Don't want him saying there were only 6 phone calls when there were actually 21. That might cause problems in using him as a friendly witness at trial. Dont want a repeat of the Grossman fiasco.

hit and run

It seems to me that Libby could really be of use to Obama.

Coming soon?

Barack Obama offers to pardon Scooter Libby in exchange for Libby's agreement to shepherd the Holder appointment through the Senate, what with the Libby/Holder/Rich nexus.

Obama then offers to obtain a full restoration of Libby's law license in exchange for Libby's agreement to represent Rahm Emanuel in Fitzgerald's investigation and imminent prosecution.

What with the ... well no need to say anything about that nexus on this blog.

(though MayBee's wet blanket that Emanuel might be this scandal's Armitage is duly noted. Then again, if Emanuel can do for the Obama administration what Armitage and Powell did for Bush, I'm all for it!)

centralcal

I am off to work . . . Laughing all the way!

Just lovin' Drudge's picture of the Man of the Year!!! Aren't you all?

Ho Ho Ho!

Jane

Hey Hit,

Did you see Caro's photo montage featuring Hit's bar and Clarice's restaurant?

LUN in case you missed it.

(I miss that day, and that weather, but that's another story entirely.)

MayBee

That is a wonderful photo montage. Thanks for relinking it, Jane.

fdcol63

"President Obama" is even more nauseating to say as "President Clinton".

I never thought that would be possible. LOL

narciso

Too many leaks, remember when there was that outrage by Steve Brill at Starr's effrontery in getting information out, and his spokesman had to do a mea culpa.
Covering up the guilty,(Armitage, Rezko) or actually using them as witness (Radler)slamming the innocent,(Libby,Black)obfuscating the difference; I almost feel sorry for Blago, 'what the rules changed when I wasn't looking'. and I have less and less respect for Fitz. That's way to byzantine a set up H&R, but that doesn't make it unlikely.

The more I think about it, Fitz seems a good deal like the Starr manque William Dell, for the Law & Order/Homicidepolitical commercial, disguised as a cross over
episode. If Jay's new time slot doesn't kill the series, a Fitz type character will end up on the side of the rapping gavel. I happened to glance by Greta's show, and I was unfortunately reminded in the course of a segment with clueless idiot Jonathan
Martin, that David Letterman, who I've recalled before, was stalked previously y a psycho fan, tried to make light of the Wasilla Church fire. Maybe Wordwide Pants needs a little notice, this makes thelittle slap Patterson received last weekend on SNL look harmless by comparison. A result of their need not to examine the One.
by comparison.

clarice

Well, there you are...Hit shows up after a long hiatus and Lady Jane just happens to appear and flirt with him. (I suppose that's how she garnered that photoshopped Steyn card--that hussy.)

Thanks, Jane! I did not see it...and likely would not have had you not mentioned it.

But now I will! It's a Festivus miracle!

Topsecretk9

I have to say, Holder's forgetting to document his high profile Blago association on his questionnaire 5 days AFTER this current sitch unfolded is amazingly stupid and the pat "he forgot" just does not wash.

In fact "he forgot" on the heals of "mispoke" and "no contact" is a clear pattern and I'm just waiting for "literary flair" to surface soon.

clarice

Yes, TS--He just threw logs on the confirmation hearing fire.

Caro

Jane, are you going to tell Clarice, or should I? No Photoshopping involved in that one!

clarice

Quit saying that, Caro..You aren't fooling anyone. (*wink*)

bad

Dana Milbank is all snarky mean about Obama.

LUN

Caro

We missed you, Hit.

I think it is time we start talking about "failure to vet" Obama's appointments.

As a followup to centralcal's comment, Time has announced its Man of the Year...When I realized I was old enough to remember when that was something people talked about, I suddenly began writing like Larry King...if this investigation becomes a problem for Rahm Emanuel, maybe Bradley Whitford could become Chief of Staff...I lost confidence in Time when they replaced their fonts in 1986...With all the movies that come from tv shows, when will we get to see F Troop on the silver screen?...There's no good way to stop once you start writing like this...I think Larry should be credited as the honorary founder of Twitter...I probably could have stopped with that last one, but I'm still going...wonder if the creative minds behind the latest Indiana Jones said that...I'm just waiting for the laptop battery to die at this point...

When I'm away, I miss you the most, Clarice.

This Brad Whitford?

fdcol63

Oh, I'm sure Obamaniacs will just say he's posing, joking around, it's all innocent fun.

Jane

Madame Clarice

The Steyn card is the one thing that is not photoshopped (eat your heart out) and I have it right here in my office. (suitable for framing, I might add)

Jane

Caro,

I jumped ahead before I saw yours, and I never responded to your group lunch radio festival in April which I think is a fabulous idea!

Topsecretk9
Gov. Rod Blagojevich said Wednesday he is ready to tell his side of the scandal to the people of Illinois and that he would do so no later than Thursday.

"I can't wait to begin to tell my side of the story and to address you guys and, most importantly, the people of Illinois. That's who I'm dying to talk to," he said as he left his home Wednesday morning for a jog.

"There's a time and place for everything. That day will soon be here and you might know more about that today, maybe no later than tomorrow."

...When asked if he would join his lawyer at the Capitol Wednesday, Blagojevich said he was "in good hands" with Genson being there. Asked about when he might talk, the governor was glib: "To quote Elvis, 'hang loose.' Now can I get a run in, do you think?"

He appears to be acting like Obama.

Topsecretk9

and today:

"[T]here isn't a person involved in Chicago politics who would tell you that Barack Obama and Rod Blagojevich had any kind of close relationship," Axelrod answered. "They never did. They weren't from the same political factions in Illinois politics, and they weren't close."

fdcol63

" ... They weren't from the same political factions in Illinois politics ..."

BS. They're both DEMOCRATS!

narciso

Oh and frabjous joy, Katherine Parker is for Caroline Kennedy's coronation. Actually compared to the alternatives, Andrew
'Subprime' Cuomo, Nyda Velazquez, Fran Drescher, (what fresh hell is this!)she doesn't look half bad. yes she foisted Biden on us, and she gave Kennedy honors to Murtha and Mora (Anger bulding , rage returning)They're all clueless. They should just put up some meaningless cipher, and have the soccer scrum two years from now, when everyone including Caroline can run. Maybe we should follow the tongue and cheek suggestion of our local gabmeister Todd Schnitt (actually he's out of Tampa) George
Kennedy, yes he's in his eighties and lives
in Idaho, but let that not those issues get in the way.

Needless to say, (why say it then) in Time's "I love Big Brother Issue" they had to carp all over Sarah, putting her as 3rd runner up, even though the web poll had her consistently at No.2, she was the heart and soul of the other campaign, such as there was one, so naturally they had to repeat all their old lies. One is reminded not so much of 1984, but of the other timely dystopia 'the Running Man" where the rulers went so far as to edit video and audio tapes in order to frame their victims.

Chris

Caught part of Axe on morning Joe. He said that the 21 contacts # reported between Rahm and Blago was not accurate. Wouldn't say how many though. Joe was pretty tough on Axe but then blew him wet kisses at the end. Thanked him for always being a "straight shooter". Joe is attempting to be liked by everyone and it isn't going to work out well for him.

Chris

" ... They weren't from the same political factions in Illinois politics ..."

Apparently a bit of truth to that. But Rahm and Blago ARE from the same faction.

bgates

They weren't from the same political factions in Illinois politics, and they weren't close.
Maybe not joined at the hip like Obama and Wright, but Blagojevich wasn't a complete stranger to Obama like, say, ethics.

Porter

I told you this was going to get intersting.

If Rahm hires Sidley & Austin, he's going to roll on Obama. Anybody else, and he's falling on his sword.

Rahm is the set of keys to the state.

(Side note, he made his money between the WH and the House, a very, very short period, granted. Who were Rahm's "clients"?)

Porter

Intersting=interesting

Sorry.

Republicans will get a black senator in 2010.

Charles Williams, head of Texas Railroad Commission, is gearing up to run for Kay Hutchinson's seat.

If he runs, he wins.

MayBee

Jane is smart to have given up on MSNBC. It is an addiction for me.
Yesterday, their supposedly right-of-center pundit, Michelle Bernard, was talking about how much people from across the spectrum are going to flock to Obama's online community.
Look at what it's called! She beamed. *My* Barack Obama.com. Oh, she thought that would thrill people.

RichatUF

bad-

But isn't that conflating what the rumor was. The report said their were 21 taped conversations, there could have been plenty other contacts. I also wonder if Fitz might be interested in Rham's house purchase. I remember a while back someone from Team ZERO was looking to buy a $3 million mansion and there was a report that the Secret Service did a walk through. Curious that story was coming out when the auction for the Senate seat was near closing.

bad

Of course Rich. Semantics, parsing, Team Obama does it all. And I get the feeling all discerepancies will be blamed on press reports. At least for now. The Libby experience won't permit criticism of the investigative team until everything's over.

bad

Imagine trying to figure out which conversations were taped if the actual number is higher than the leaked number.

matt

1 - I'm waiting for the missing 18 minutes on the tapes.

2 - There are already 3-4 people turning state's evidence, and they know where the bodies are buried.

3 - Daly has had a scandal ridden mayoralty, and he is at the center. He's dirty and Fitz knows it.

4 - The Illinois state government is so corrupt that someone should be invoking RICO.

5 - Obama used Chicago style tactics to achieve his goals.

6 - $600-700 Million in campaign money with much of it undocumented is highly suspicious.

As the FBI did in the 1920's with Capone, follow the money. This thing is far from over unless the fix is already in. As anything is possible in this day and age, I have become very cynical.

Soylent Red

Just a random thought...

One has to wonder what Hillary's role in all of this is and was. She hates Rahm and possibly has maps to the buried bodies lying around from the campaign days.

PeterUK

Surely Gov. Rod Blagojevich is in appalling breach of etiquette? Senate seats can only be inherited or given to those of good family with a relationship to a former president. At the very least,a family with an off shore trust.

hrtshpdbox

Hillary hates Rahm? Can someone give me details on that, I had thought that Rahm was an old Clintonite.

bad

Senate seats can only be inherited or given to those of good family with a relationship to a former president.

Or he could start his own family dynasty by appointing his wife to the senate seat. Once in the senate, she hooks up with Charlie Rangel, Chris Dodd, Chuck Schumer, Barney Frank, et al, and learns how to become a friend of whomever. Voila! Instant income.

WEll except that O and Rahmbo designed and executed his gubernatorial run. Nah, not close at all.

PeterUK

"I had thought that Rahm was an old Clintonite."

To know her is to loathe her.

clarice

I believe at the complaint presser Fitz observed that the complaint dealt with only 3 hours worth of taped conversations and there are 300 hours in the govt's possession.

This, I think, is to scare potential witnesses.

I expect--if Blag's calls are like the calls to me--99% is filler and if Fitz had more he'd have used it. As it was he put in a lot that was more scabrous than criminal.

narciso

Yeah, Michelle's had a brainwashing, brain rinse lately; she had a big conniption fit
over the latest 'wardrobe gate' charges; not bothering to check if they were true.
So how does Axelrod know how many calls there were to him, and did anybody do any follow up, Ah yes, Instinct. That did seem like a lot of calls, considering all the other things he had on his mind. Oh and by the way, that site, always had some weird epigraph by a marxist or far leftist every day; I'm sure that was just's a coincidence.

Porter:

"If Rahm hires Sidley & Austin, he's going to roll on Obama. Anybody else, and he's falling on his sword."

That's interesting and not what I would have expected from all of the Obama connections we've been hearing about till now. How so? I really don't know much about how Rahm actually fits into the Chicago picture frame.

bad
Asked at a press conference moments ago about how he squared his commitment to transparency in government with the tight-lipped response he and his advisers have had to questions about their dealings with the scandal-tarnished governor, Obama said that it has been "frustrating" to maintain silence but that the questions will be answered next week--which happens to be when he will be in Hawaii on break.

"It's a little bit frustrating. There has been a little bit of speculation in the press that I would like to correct immediately. We are abiding by the request of the U.S. Attorney's office," Obama said. "But it's not going to be that long. By next week, you guys will have the answers to all of your questions."

As Obama spoke, his political advisor David Axelrod and chief of staff designate Rahm Emanuel watched from the margins of the room. Axelrod stood motionless, hands on hips, a frown partially hidden by his moustache and his attention laser-focused on Obama as he spoke. Emanuel, who was checking a message on his Blackberry when the question was asked, smiled in faint amusement, put the Blackberry away and watched the rest of Obama's response with his legs crossed at his ankles, arms crossed and a single finger pressed across his lips. He was still smiling.

Fascinating...

Pal2Pal (Sara)

she doesn't look half bad.

Yeah, if you like horsey-faced anorexic female John Kerry look-a-likes.

I know, I know, you meant it in the political sense, but I couldn't resist.

clarice

How do you read that, bad?

clarice

Glad you like that peter. I can't type but I've got a marvelous vocabulary.

bad

First, I was amused that O's pressers are so boring and berift of onfo that The Swamp is reduced to reporting body language.

Second, Axelrod was listening intently to figure out who needed to correct the record (again) in case the mind rays he was sending to O were abducted by Republicans.

Third, Rahm thinks he is smarter than everyone else.

hit and run

You know what may be the most fun in all of this Blago mess? Drawing paralells between Obama's Blago problems and Clinton's various, uh, problems.

So imagine my utter delight to find this: Betty Currie is answering phones for John Podesta in the Obama transition office.

Another Festivus miracle!

bad

Seriously, Clarice, I have a fear of lot's of titilating stuff being released which makes the truth look like no big deal when it comes out later.

bad

Another Festivus miracle!

Does it involve a pole?

bad

Where do ya s'pose that Drudge Obama picture came from?

narciso

Yes, a pole the 'contest of strength' and the airing of grievances. Vicious, Sara, on point but vicious nonetheless; I outlined mys misgivings again. Someone pointed out that Paterson's a legacy, and the two top choices are ones too, One an actual Kennedy
and a Kennedy inlaw, If that Lahood story's true, my former South Florida mayor's future
job advancements just hit a snowbank, Than again, it comes from the Tribune's
Washington bureau, so don't take that it to the the bank. If it came from the SunTimes I'd believe it more thoroughly. I'm sure Rahm does think himself smarter than everyone else, his latest actions don't seem to bear that out. He does seem to modeled his vision of chief of staff on Bradley Whitford, although the former preceded the latter.

Danube of Thought

I think it would be wise to keep expectations at a modest level regarding this thing. There is no evidence of any wrongdoing by Obama, or even Rahm. What there is is likely a whole lot of stuff that will be highly embarrassing to Rahm, and thus indirectly to Obama, as the "Chicago Way" (and the lingua franca of that Way) is unveiled for all the world to see.

I predict Rahm will not end up as chief of staff, but I don't expect a lot beyond that.

I have a truly fabulous mock Time Magazine cover, but have no idea how to make it available to you all. Accordingly, I am going to send it to Jane, whose e-mail address I have, and to Clarice, whose address I think I still have. Speaking of which, someone has posted stuff on other threads using my name--which I suppose anyone can do if he wants to. My guess is that nothing can be done about this, but it's not that big a deal, I guess.

DoT,

I believe that was a demonstration that your leave taking from that thread might have been the act of the syphilitic drunkard who wanders through from time to time. I do not believe that any harm or mocking was involved whatsoever. It was a gesture of a sincere hope that you would not be departing the premises for a prolonged period.

If no one responds to the syphilitic drunkard, he will wander off after vomiting on the floor a few times. It's just a matter of acquiring the self-discipline to ignore him as you would a drunk floundering in the gutter. I find thinking of Clarice's pistolas to be an aid in the area of almost self-discipline. She's a fine shot.

Great news Glenda. I have some surgery good news too. My "kid sister" cousin, who had to have an "emergency" mastectomy a few months ago, cleared all post cancer follow-ups and scans and had her first reconstruction surgery yesterday morning. She is in lots of pain, but otherwise doing great. She is 55 and the single mother of a 13 year old. Her biggest worry is missing her daughter's performance in the Pittsburgh Ballet's "Nutcracker" where she has two different solo dances. Daughter told her not to worry, at least she'll be alive to see her next year.

Good Christmas news all the way around.

I didn't even know they could do lung transplants, let alone a double. Scary!
