Clarice - I am making it Wednesday night so be prepared! I think I can do it..we are having a kind of surf 'n surf dinner - my sister is making a dish called: Wine-braised Seafood Choucroute...I'm amking the risotto...and we'll have a salad and some fresh french bread....giant prawns and shrimp ceviche for appetizers...

I'll probably be the only one drinking like a fish since I won't have to drive..I'm guessing some champagne or chardonnay????? (The wine in the cooking is a Reisling or Gewrztraminer)

Via Drudge Flash Report...

Al Gore is scheduled before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Wednesday morning to once again testify on the 'urgent need' to combat global warming.

But Mother Nature seems ready to freeze the proceedings.

A 'Winter Storm Watch' has been posted for the nation's capitol and there is a potential for significant snow... sleet... or ice accumulations.

"I can't imagine the Democrats would want to showcase Mr. Gore and his new findings on global warming as a winter storm rages outside," a Republican lawmaker emailed the DRUDGE REPORT. "And if the ice really piles up, it will not be safe to travel."

A spokesman for Sen. John Kerry, who chairs the committee, was not immediately available to comment on contingency plans.

Global warming advocates have suggested this year's wild winter spells are proof of climate change.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA... Gaia has spoken...

House Energy and Commerce Chairman Henry Waxman (D-Calif.) has a different idea. It goes by the technical name, "revenue decoupling." What it does is not technical at all. It allows utilities to protect themselves against declining consumer demand by charging higher and higher prices. As consumers cut their power usage, utility companies will benefit from the ability to raise their rates to maintain revenue levels. The consumer loses the incentive to be a good conservationist while the power company reaps the benefit of reward.

This ranks way up there as one of the stupidest ideas to come down the pike, so it had to be a Democrat who came up with it.

MikeS

I dunno if TM is interested in transferring but if he is then finding a reliable host server shouldn't be too tough.

I don't believe that pagination can't be turned off. I would buy the idea that bloggers can't do it with the admin utilities available to them. I really don't have the training to do it, but I suspect that somewhere in JOM's website there is a list of variables, one of which needs to be changed from 1 to 0.

Danube of Thought

I've concluded that Obama has fully bought into the global warming nonsense; I know that his energy secretary (Chu) has done so.

Chu is a scientist--a Nobel prize winner, no less--but his field is not related to climate. I would hope that before he would recommend or approve any costly governmental intervention on behalf of this insanity, he would apply his mind to a comprehensive study of peer-reviewed material on the topic.

And I wish to God that the GOP would call Lord Monckton to testify before the same panel as Gore, but my hopes that the GOP will do a goddam thing have so long been dashed that it's nothing more than a fantasy. My expectation is that Ranging Member Lugar will give a nice, polite Indiana welcome to that corpulent snake-oil salesman, then rest supine as the witness drones on.

Chris

Neo,
Interesting post on revenue decoupling. It makes sense, in the inverted logic of CA Dem's. They've already "decoupled" in the event of rising demand. Witness the 2000 brown/blackouts here. Utilities couldn't raise rates in the case of rising demand so why should the consumer benefit by conserving and using less.

On another note, I've always found it perplexing that one of the greatest promulgators of the AGW hoax here in NorCal is PG&E, the monopoly utility. They've spent tens, maybe hundreds, of millions promoting junk science and feel-good light bulbs. That's their customers' money, btw.

Local man having "direct talks" with Iran:

A Novato man pleaded guilty today to conspiring to illegally export parts for military and commercial aircraft to Iran, including fighter jets and military helicopters.

Hassan Keshari, 48, a native of Iran and a naturalized U.S. citizen, admitted in U.S. District Court in Miami to helping Iran obtain parts designed for the F-14 Tomcat fighter jet, the Cobra AH-1 attack helicopter and the CH-53 military helicopter.

Keshari and his Novato company, Kesh Air International, acted as a broker and supplier of aircraft parts to Iran. The parts were bought from co-defendant Traian Bujduveanu and his Broward County, Fla., business, Orion Aviation Corp., and were sent to Iran by way of freight forwarders in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

I might give it a shot of writing it up but I probably wouldn't get it in until after midnight. First page of the Obama Transition document: 133,876,000 without Dem voting buy-plan

w/ Dem vote buying plan: 137,550,000

BLS Table-C:143,338,000 Dec 08

I saw that it was prettied up with "payroll employment" which could seem to cut out the self-employed. Very odd mythodology, are we sure it hasn't been enHansened to make it look better?

Where to begin.

The details: 1. For the output effects of the recovery package, we started by averaging the multipliers for increases
in government spending and tax cuts from a leading private forecasting firm and the Federal Reserve’s FRB/US model

I suppose the BLS Employment data would have been too parochial.

We considered multipliers for the case where the federal funds rate remains constant...the funds rate is likely to be at or near its lower bound of zero for
the foreseeable future.

You've got to be kidding me. 0-25 FFR for 2 years (ie "the foreseeable future")?

We believe that the rule of thumb that 60% of funds devoted to state relief will be used to prevent spending cuts and that 30% will be used to prevent tax increases, and that these effects will occur with a lag of about three months, are good first approximations

This can't be true. California, facing a $42 billion deficit will have to get a federal bailout, and to pay for it, they'll have to cut services and raise taxes much in the same way that Argentina and South Korea had to when they were bailed out with the IMF. The "benefits" re:state relief are delusional.

Umm, you can't buy an out of state car and register it in California unless it is California emission compliant. It's been illegal for years. There's a sticker right under the hood that says whether it is 50 state compliant and DMV only has to enter the VIN to know whether it is when you register. You can't even buy an out of state diesel pickup.

As to Al Gore; it has become apparent why he has feasted so heartily on krill the last few years. Without that thick layer of blubber he would never survive the inevitable howling blizzards which dog his public bloviations like Javert hounding Valjean.

Seriously? If I live in Arizona and move to California I can't bring my car with me? I have to buy a new car?

Rick Ballard

Rich,

They are using the Nonfarm Employment number 2008Q4 average = 136,033, the 2007Q4 average was 138,445. The 143,338 number includes the self-employed. I believe that this first Obama Five Year Plan envisions a change of status for entrepreneurs (vide Lenin, Stalin, kulaks).

Barney Frank

Rich, with the enchanting new TP format I don't think anyone could tell.

Your AZ car would have to pass CA emissions test. If it doesn't, then you are obligated to spend $$ (there is a cap, not sure what it is) to get it to pass. Why anyone would leave AZ to enter this hellhole is beyond me. Don't do it! I realize it was a hypo.

Old Lurker

The Republic of Texas can be born again! Not that I believe that for a minute, but I like saying it.

Old Lurker

Chris and Barney are right. That is exactly why these crazy laws from CA are so dangerous...manufacturers have to either produce two products, one for CA and one for the other 49, or else they have to apply the CA demands to all 50 states and cram them down on all of us. They do the same thing with, for example, lead content requirements in all sorts of electronics. Oh wait...those are now federal.

Sue,

A non resident can import a vehicle they bought out of state if they move here.
But a resident or CA business cannot import a new (less than 7500 miles) vehicle that is not 50 state compliant.

Clarice,
Interesting comment re CA and cars. I think there may be some sort of backdoor effort underway to force CA residents to buy cars from companies like Tesla. The state may be playing a sort of market maker for vehicles that people would not otherwise buy. There was a 4 or 500 million sop to Tesla in the auto bailout, btw.

There is an exemption feature, but its pretty useless unless you own an exotic.

Thinking more on Rush's response to Obama.

Instead of getting in the gutter with his new nemisis, he decided to act like the Mr. Big Obama gives him credit for and made a serious proposal: The Obama-Limbaugh Stimulus of 2009, where Obama only gets his percentage of the vote total -- a generously rounded-up 54% of the $1T stimulus dollars -- for vote-buying, while the other 46% go to tax cuts, mostly corporate and capital gains.

He also claimed it would be easy to determine which action created the most stimulus and jobs. A truly bipartisan bill, and a major Fairness Doctrine setback for Obama, as everybody here immediately concluded upon Obama's calling out of a radio guy by name.

Seems like a pretty good strategy. Rush can build on this now.

That is a sign of the scrutiny banks will face going forward as they finance deals, oversight that could also serve as a deterrent to similar transactions going forward.
