"Oh the path was deep and wide from footsteps leading to our cabin
Above the door there burned a scarlet lamp
And late at night a hand would knock and there would stand a stranger
Yes I'm the son of Hickory Holler's tramp

Well the corn was dry the weeds were high when daddy took to drinking
Then him and Lucy Walker they took up and they ran away
Mama cried a tear and then she promised fourteen children
I swear you'll never see a hungry day
When mama sacrificed her pride the neighbors started talkin'
But I was much too young to understand the things they said
Well the things that mattered most of all was mama's chicken dumplings
And the goodnight kiss before we went to bed
Oh the path was deep and wide...
[ guitar ]
When daddy left then destitution came upon our family
Not one neighbor volunteered to lend us a helping hand
So just let them gossip all they want she loved us and she raised us
The proof is standing here in this full grown man
Last summer mama passed away and left the ones who loved her
Each and every one is more than grateful for their birth
Each Sunday she receives a big bouquet of fourteen roses
And the card that reads the greatest mom on earth
Well I said that the path was deep and wide...
Yes I'm the son of Hickory Holler's tramp".

That was awesome. I wouldn't mind listening to Obama if someone would do a voice-over during his pauses to tell us what he is thinking and actually saying.

Sue

I'm a great believer in looking forwards than looking backwards.

Yeah. Sure. Except when he needs to look backwards to find Bush to blame.

Not really, they've always struck me as a bunch of alcoholic deadbeats who managed to fool somebody into hiring them.

Remember the old SNL skit, http://snltranscripts.jt.org/86/86istu.phtml>Sincere Guy Stu?

Let's just pretend in our wildest imaginations that the SNL of today would even consider doing this for Obama.

I mean, of course it will only stay in our imaginations. SNL would never do that today

...

because there simply isn't anything funny about Obama . . . that isn't racist.

Shame, that.

This one's a keeper. Thanks for providing the link. It made me laugh.

Earlier today, I referred to Barry as, well, Barry. Shocked by my saying this, a man found it strange that I would refer to Barry, as Barry, because he never heard Barry being called Barry until today.

Wish I had this clip to thrown in his pocket. People can be so weird.

Elliott

Nothing funny about President Bowbama? Have you forgotten the Region 1 DVDs for the British Prime Minister?

Pagar

a man found it strange that I would refer to Barry

Maybe he has actually see his birth certificate and knows what his name really is.

PeterUK

"Nothing funny about President Bowbama? Have you forgotten the Region 1 DVDs for the British Prime Minister?"

Actually giving the Queen an iPod with his own speaches on it is breathtaking egotism.A bit like a student violinist giving Itzhak Perlman a CD he recorded in his bedroom.
This kid has only just got the gig!

Fresh Air

Bela--

Just call him "Zero," it's more descriptive and less derisive of other Barry's out there.

If they do dump Dodd then AG Blumenthal (of recent Glenn Beck fame)will proabably jump into the race. Even though Glenn tore him up he has >70% approval in CT. While he may have looked stupid the other day he has a deep resevoir of political favors and was looking to challenge Lieberman. As long as he waits long enough to get in the AG would be unbeatable. If Dodd stays in and wins Dem primary then Simmons can take him out. However the AG is a notorius coward when it comes to running a competitive race so I'm hoping his little camera grabbing chicken livered lack of heart keeps him out and Dodd in.

Full disclosure: I am currently helping to raise money for Simmons

clarice

Should the rest of us volunteer for Dodd thru the primary?
I am sure Mr PUK and his friend Mr Ballard would join me..

Fresh Air

While i appreciate the sentiment i don't think you could hold your breath that long! Although you might find some good deals on real estate from some of his seedier friends.

MayBee

Actually giving the Queen an iPod with his own speaches on it is breathtaking egotism

Ha! Yes it is! And you can tell its a dud because it's rarely mentioned by the press. The iPod is mentioned, and we hear about the show tunes it had. But the copy of his speeches is politely ignored.

Extraneus

So Obama apologized in a speech today that we've been "arrogant," and got "side-tracked" in Iraq? Wonder how the parents of the dead feel about that, or the rest of the military, or the Iraqis.

What an asshole.

PeterUK

Maybee,
Irrespective on anyone's view on a hereditory monarchy, the Queen has met more Kings,Queens, Prime Ministers,President,Paramount Chiefs,Dictators,Governors,Ambassadors, film stars, athletes, celebrities, artists, actors, writer, heroes,
heroines, butchers, bakers, candlestick makers, fools and flunkies than Obama has had hot dinners.
Even if the kid runs two terms,he will never catch up with her experience.

Rick Ballard

"What an asshole."

There's no need to focus on his good side, Extraneous.

PeterUK

"So Obama apologized in a speech today that we've been "arrogant," and got "side-tracked" in Iraq?"

Looks like you might get "side-tracked" some more.

matt

there is a photo essay in the LA Times on what the first ladies wore in London headlined "Just what do the most powerful women in the world wear?". Since none of the women under consideration actually hold power, I thought that was one of the dumbest headlines I've seen in a long time.

sbw

I heard that "we've been arrogant" apology for an instant driving home. I was instantly offended. And deeply angry that he presumed to speak for me or any other American and misrepresent feelings toward Europeans.

At home, I said to my wife, "Obama is an assh*le!." She said, "That's not new. You've said that before." "Yes, but I am astounded by how much each day he can outdo himself."

PeterUK

Well Obasshole has outdone himself again.Aided by Igor(Gorgon Brown) he has "Cooked The Books" the G20 "Trillion Dollar Dole Out " is a fabrication. There is NO new money, there will be no cavalry from the planet Zartog.

Bill in AZ

You almost have to feel for Duh Won in these impromptu situations. On the one hand, he has to try to sound like he knows what he is doing (not possible), and on the other he has to do Soros bidding. These are diametrically opposed positions - and Soros now has "WTF!" programmed as one key press to Duh Won's blackberry. Someone mentioned they could hear his blackberry going off in the background. Every one of his "uh's", even the multiple "uh's" in a row, are a result of Soros WTF!'s. Then, after making a fool of himself, he gets to look forward to getting spanked by Soros later. Poor guy. And poor Soros - between Pelosi, Reid, and Duh Won, he spends most of his day smacking his head on his desk.

Extraneus

Yes, I'm offended, too. I didn't hear the whole speech, as I avoid such things as a rule, but I suppose he left out the fact that the 2002 AUMF vote was 73-27 in the Senate? That 58% of Democrats voted Yea?

The fool thinks the world is comprised of moonbats, because that's all he knows.

What a disgrace. Worse than Carter and Clinton combined already, and deserving of far less respect than either of them. Did either of them bow the the goddamned king of Saudi Arabia? Geeze.

It will take years to reverse the destruction, assuming we ever do.

I imagine you guys are sick to death of me babbling on about Redoubt Volcano, so here`s a nice change of pace. Sakurajima Volcano. Last night 2 Japanese volcanos were going off, Sakurajima and another I forget the name. Both pluming only to about 10,000 feet, but nice to know Mother Nature hasn[t forgotten to screw with the Japanese during all the Alaskan excitement. Nothing else to report.

PeterUK-

It's good to see all that CAC experience Obama has is being put to good use and rubbing off on Brown.

PaulL

The "Cooked the Books" article you link to is astounding, Peter. But if we are to believe it, that would mean that we have to accept that Barack Obama lied!

Rick Ballard

"There is NO new money, there will be no cavalry from the planet Zartog."

Peter,

Merkel and Zarkozy made that clear a couple of weeks ago. I'm unsurprised that the Chinese are having "second thoughts" about their increased contribution. I linked a story about ME oil shipments dropping 20% since January. China has to be sucking gas on a level unknown since before '90.

There are some mildly encouraging signs in the US but I'm starting to think "next leg down" rather than "bottom at last" due to the utter incompetence displayed by the President in setting an optimistic tone. I know he's a dirty, lying, cheating, thieving socialist but he doesn't even seem to have the brains to know that there won't be anything for the Democrats to steal unless US consumers start to spend again.

I agree with others that he's a lifetime centerfold for Proctology Today" but I really didn't think he was this dumb.

Rick Ballard

I'm going to switch to Clarice's suggestion of [i]. Sorry for blowing the italics.

PeterUK

RichatUF,
Brown didn't need help,he used to announce the same new spending every budget.

PaulL,
No,the kid is confused,he thinks a Trillion is an alien.

cindyk

Difficult as this week has been. I return to my preferred role as Rick Ballard's groupie. "Proctology Today Centerfold" - LOL - you (Rick) are always the best at making the worst tolerable!

PeterUK

Not only is there no money there are no more troops for Afghanistan.

To quote the Romans,"He came,he saw,he went away again".

BTW.If you keep your money off shore and ahve forgotten what a Trillion Dollars lookslike.

Nice bank you got there, would be a shame if anything, y'know, happened to it.

But the really important news is listening to Gov. Palin's daughter's ex-boyfriend dish some dirt on the Governor's daughter and maybe the family. Priorities people.

Also, wanted to get your take on the food stamp number going around-is it really 32.2 million people or has that number been enHansened. I remember an article a while back which stated that state agencies were agressively marketing food stamps (hummm...market makers) but that number seems a distortion.

Charlie (Colorado)

I didn't do it this time.

Sakurajima Volcano.

Well, it is time for Cherry Blossom Festival.

NY Gov. Paterson:

And now here in Binghamton we probably have the worst tragedy and senseless crime in the history of this state.

Huh? Really? 9/11 didn't happen in his state?

Rich, yesterday I read of a family with $80k in the bank which was eligible for food stamps.

Extraneus

9/11 wasn't as senseless to moonbats. We deserved that one.

I remember Ace, had a post comparing the situation to that Monty Python sketch about
Luigi Fricotti threatening the Army, hence the link, but one can't laugh at this, It's possibly the a)stupidest,b) most inane c) evil, or d) all of the above things I've ever heard. He wants the companies hooked on the TARP so that he can control them, and blocks any step for them to get out of
the downturn. While we're distracted with
the adoration of Sherri Palmer's standin,
and the tabloid sliming of Sarah by proxy.
I didn't think it would get so bad, so fast, frankly, with the latest wrinkle of 'community organizers' actually conducting the census.

Europeans hate when someone refers to them as “Europeans”. They are Germans, Brits, Italians, etc. Everyone with grain of brain knows this. Except Obama... and me...

Daddy - Thanks for the tip on the Japanese volcanoes. I'll have to look for pictures tomorrow.

(Speaking of volcanoes, I just posted some pics from my last ski trip to Rainier. It was a spectacular day.)

$80k is qualifing income but I suppose the $1500/yr which could be spent on food can go to other "productive" purposes. Good grief.

Jim,

Nice pictures. I still laugh that a town at the base of a volcano would call itself Paradise (isn't there another town called Sunrise too, its been a while since I've been out that way).

Also good catch on the Hamilton paper (via econbrowserand wanted to take a look at it over the weekend. Interesting that the Obama Administration's policies will make oil shocks more severe not less as he taxes real energy production and ends exploration.

“My administration,” the president added, “is the only thing between you and the pitchforks.”

Clarice was right! Shoulda bought pitchfork stock.

But what O doesn't realize is that the pitchforks are pointed at him and, more importantly, his economy-destroying dreams.

Jim Miller

Rich - The Paradise name probably came from the wildflowers that you see there in the late summer. (Last July, the snow held on much longer than usual, and I recall seeing some tourists who were a little grumpy because they were expecting the flowers. What kinds of flowers? Lupine, bistort, glacier lillies, and many, many more.) It's about a mile high, so you sometimes get snow there even in July and August.

Paradise is on the south side of the mountain, and Sunrise is on the northeast side. You get prettier views at Paradise, and more spectacular views at Sunrise. They plow the road to Paradise during the winter, but not to Sunrise.

Fun fact: Years ago, there was a golf course at Paradise.

JM Hanes

We're about to see whether "the CEOs of the most powerful financial institutions in the world" are worth all that money they pay themselves or not. Give the hook to Morgan/Chase right now for not delivering that check to Geithner at a press conference. If those guys can't out maneuver Mr. Tin Pot wannabe we are well and truly fucked.

Rick Ballard

Also, wanted to get your take on the food stamp number going around-is it really 32.2 million people or has that number been enHansened. I remember an article a while back which stated that state agencies were agressively marketing food stamps (hummm...market makers) but that number seems a distortion.

It doesn't seem high. The 'below poverty level' group encompasses 13.3% of the population - that comes to around 40 million individuals. Families with incomes up to 200% of poverty level can qualify for food stamps in some areas. From a positive viewpoint - 20% of the people eligible decline to participate in panem et circences, even with the dirty socialists engaging in full scale marketing efforts.

PD

It would sure be nice if Mr. Obama would stand up for the country he represents once in a while.

I mean, it's not like the other G19 are going to.

Kinda sad that we have no one there to represent out interests.

Geez. Obama Does Strasbourg -- in a townhall meeting where he explains how difficult life is with a 24 hour security detail. He'd be just like us, you see, but he has to be a President instead. If it weren't racist, I'd say he shuffles listlessly around the stage. Apparently, nobody is awake enough to faint, so he accuses Europeans of trying to usurp his prerogatives;

Instead of recognizing the good that America so often does in the world, there have been times where Europeans chose to blame America for much of what's bad," Obama said.
Then it's off to do the circus circuit with Angela Merkel, where our erstwhile International Relations major informs us that:
[NATO] has been the most successful alliance in modern history, an alliance that was so effective that we never had to fight.
I kid you not. His appearances elsewhere suggest that clause deux was a Presidential ad lib, but never mind. Click "NATO Celebrates 60 Years" in the video player above, to see for yourselves. I've just run out of adjectives to describe the shallowness of this man's vaunted intellect. I'll grant him some street smarts, but surely, that cultivated veneer of probity can't disguise the venality beneath it much longer, can it?

clarice

Sweetie, you're asking the wrong person. I'd never have joined this guy for a coffee date. I could smell the fraud a mile away.
I hope before I die, the scam that was pulled off at the HLS is fully exposed.

JM Hanes

Snake oil has an unmistakable odor doesn't it? That little puppet master vignette with the bankers, and the petty symbolism of serving them a single glass of water, no ice included, was as appalling as any of the news from Europe. I'm really missing W right now, and Soylent Red!

RichatUF

I'll grant him some street smarts, but surely, that cultivated veneer of probity can't disguise the venality beneath it much longer, can it?

NATO...9/11 Article V, Serbia, Kosovo, Afghanistan...not much fighting there

That's a tough one. The media lap poodles (he and his staffers have read all the dog training books) will work even harder to portray him as a genius, he'll go and push around some more CEOs because he can, and he'll enlist his followers to "get in people's faces". Should make for interesting times.

Every world leader that wants to make a fool of Obama is going to devise a bunch of dirty tricks with that teleprompter and his blackberry.

narciso

If he was an ordinary everyday fool like say Joe Biden, it would be regretable but somewhat understandable. But he's not the
only character I can compare him with not
in experience but in temperament an ideology
is Henry Wallace, although is "Luigi Fricotti" routine is a little reminiscent of William Jenning Bryan, neither were ever elected to President, as Bismark was wont to say, about America. He's just wrong 75 ways from Sunday, and through the use of the Axelrod/Alinsky axis, was able to wrangle himself a working majority to speed
all this garbage, through before people notice what they have allowed to be done 'in their name'. His polls seem to have dropped some, according to Rasmussen, but nearly enough considering the scale of the disaster he is reaking. Every appointment is more wrongheadedly corrupt, mistaken, often insane than the next. Harry Koh, seems to be the latest from the collection of horribles, a character not unlike the mysterious radical academic Hammett from McCarry's Shelley's Heart,

And the media's blindness, seems ever more apparent and undisguised. The Carla Bruni/
Michelle Obama, beauty contest, was really amusing up to a point, but these people are
dead serious in their warping of reality, I guess that's why while Michelle was being
painted as the new Jackie O, the real counterpart to her was being assailed by
'flying monkeys'(Halcro, Fagan) and
'harpies'(Celtic Diva, Mudflats) included the the thankless serpent of her daughter's in laws. I know McCain wasn't perfect, farthest thing from, but he truly didn't wish us any harm, just somewhat confused
as to what the solutions were.

scoopa

OT, and I may have missed this suggestion elsewhere, but wouldn't it be nice for us all to tie some tea bags to our car radio antenna? We can make a statement, even if we can't attend a tea party.

glasater

that little puppet master vignette with the bankers

That phrase JMH reminded me of someone who once said of David Rockefeller that becoming President would be a step down.

Hope you enjoyed the PS show in Boston. Thought of you and all the great "stuff" you were learning.

The past weekend I went to a Frans Lanting seminar and he mentioned that recording video is the next step for still photographers and will be the thing to do down the road.

Saturday Quiz.

3)Adolf Schickelgruber.
4)Arturo Ui.

AL

Background to the quiz:
As an economic system, fascism is SOCIALISM with a capitalist veneer.

Where socialism sought totalitarian control of a society’s economic processes through direct state operation of the means of production, fascism sought that control indirectly, through domination of nominally private owners. Where socialism nationalized property explicitly, fascism did so implicitly, by requiring owners to use their property in the “national interest”—that is, as the autocratic authority conceived it. Where socialism abolished money and prices, fascism controlled the monetary system and set all prices and wages politically.
Fascism is to be distinguished from interventionism, or the mixed economy. Interventionism seeks to guide the market process, not eliminate it, as fascism did. Minimum-wage and ANTITRUST laws, though they regulate the FREE MARKET, are a far cry from multiyear plans from the Ministry of Economics.
To maintain high employment and minimize popular discontent, fascist governments also undertook massive public-works projects financed by steep taxes, borrowing, and fiat money creation.”
Read the whole thing from the encyclopedia of economics:

This article should help on the Saturday quiz PeterUK put up. It is probably one of the most chilling reports from the American Far, Far left that I have read.

Loudon: Former Terrorist Mark Rudd Assesses Obama’s Progress
On Afghanistan, no. He knows that the biggest internal enemy is the military-industrial-security complex, and he’s not going to give them the excuse to organize to defeat him (as they defeated Kennedy).

The trick is to look at the next level, where Podesta put center-leftists, predominantly. He learned from Cheney. Actually, the director of CIA, Minetta, a center-leftist, probably gave them conniptions.

As I read it, Rudd is saying that the America right is just too stupid to fight Obama and that Obama will be able to complete his dream of turning America into a fourth world country that will have to look UP to Chavez and Castro.

PD

I have come to the conclusion that we are fundamentally misjudging our President and not giving him the credit he deserves for having only the best in mind for the U.S.

What brings about this epiphany? I finished The Audacity of Hope this morning, which ends with this:

My heart is filled with love for this country.

And it must be true. He wrote it in a book.

Ignatz Ratzkywatzky

There are some mildly encouraging signs in the US but I'm starting to think "next leg down" rather than "bottom at last" due to the utter incompetence displayed by the President in setting an optimistic tone.

Lumber futures closed at $182.50 on friday, up a little over 25% since the bottom.
I doubt the question is 'will the economy rebound this year'.
In 1930 and for the following two years, the economy capitulated, because of a succession of basically insane government policies; tax increases, Smoot Hawley, tight money in response to the market meltdown and deflationary pressures. Even with all that and FDR's subsequent New Deal imbecilities, GDP by 1936 had regrown to its 1929 levels, the stock market was up 300% and unemployment had dropped from around 25% to 15%.
The lesson is the economy will initially naturally rebound, despite what Obama does. The great risk is that it rebounds long enough for him to stay in office and do what FDR did in 1937 and kill what's left of the economy with even stupider policies.

BTW, I'm sure it's been mentioned before by someone but can't remember where; the bottom in oil prices nearly precisely matches the confirmation by Barry and Nancy that drill, drill, drill is dead, dead, dead. Doesn't seem any reason to look for esoteric causes as to why gas is up 50 cents a gallon.
