File this (inaccurately) under "Too Much Free Time" or "Google Ought To Charge This Fool", but this snippet via Glenn caught my eye:
Spitzer became governor on the strength of his assault on Wall Street. He overlooked the corruption within the state government. That's a mistake that Andrew Cuomo is not making.
Well, first of all, Hevesi was under investigation for other things while Spitzer was the State AG, and Spitzer was about to put the boot to him when Hevesi resigned in late 2006:
ALBANY, Dec. 22 — State Comptroller Alan G. Hevesi today quit his post and pleaded guilty to a single felony charge after arranging a deal with prosecutors that will spare him prison time.
His decision to step down came as Albany prosecutors were preparing to ask a grand jury to indict him on charges of defrauding the government and on other felonies stemming from his use of state employees as chauffeurs and aides to his wife, a law enforcement official said, charges that could have yielded a prison sentence had he been convicted.
Mr. Hevesi’s decision to resign, which several top Democrats said Thursday that he had made recently, will remove perhaps the biggest cloud facing Governor-elect Eliot Spitzer when he takes office in 10 days. Mr. Spitzer had made it clear that he intended to seek the comptroller’s removal, which could have set off a messy political fight and cost him a great deal of political capital in the first days of a new administration intent on shaking up the power structure in Albany.
Mr. Hevesi’s decision to step down came as Mr. Spitzer, a former close ally, had grown increasingly critical of the comptroller’s behavior in recent months. The governor-elect withdrew his endorsement during the campaign and signaled afterward that after taking office he would ask the State Senate to consider removing Mr. Hevesi.
Secondly, I have a real question a;ong the lines of "Who will guard the guardian" - is it really the job of the State Attorney General to investigate corruption in the state government? That certainly seems to be the mission of the State Inspector General:
From the press releases I infer that criminal indictments are handled in a variety of ways - here, Morgenthau of NYC handled the indictments; in this case, the suspect "was arrested by investigators from the New York State Inspector General’s office and the Utica Police Department."
Well. I don't know and I am pretty sure I don't want to find out, but at first blush it does not appear that Eliot Spitzer should have been the go-to guy on investigating Hevesi. That said, I have no doubt that he could have put himself on the case had he been so inclined.
UPDATE: A day later the Times explains the timeline:
The inquiry into corruption at the New York State pension fund started simply enough. Alan G. Hevesi, the former comptroller, was accused of using state workers as chauffeurs for his ailing wife.
But by the time Mr. Hevesi resigned his office in late 2006, investigators for the Albany County district attorney’s office were examining a more troubling problem: allegations that Mr. Hevesi’s associates had sold access to the state’s $122 billion pension fund, using one of the world’s largest pools of assets to reward friends, pay back political favors and reap millions of dollars in cash rewards for themselves.
“We knew this was not going to be a case we could handle ourselves in Albany County,” recalled P. David Soares, the Albany County district attorney.
Better watch out, next you'll be accused of defending Obama.

...at first blush it does not appear that Eliot Spitzer should have been the go-to guy on investigating Hevesi.
More seriously, I'm certainly uncertain, but it seems like the AG prosecutes pretty much everything, with the exception of potential corruption in the AG's department.

Did he have time to investigate Hevesi? I heard he was already knocking off a lot....

Well, anyhow it looks like the CNN airhead is taking a well-deserved rest of some kind:
"CNN denies reports that Roesgen's email was shut down. A spokesperson tells TVNewser many people were emailing what they believed to be Roesgen's CNN account, but it was actually a non-existent inbox. Her email account was and continues to be active.
"So far Roesgen is not talking publicly about the situation. CNN tells us she's now on a previously-planned vacation."

Vilsack names head of Environment and Climate

As the controversy over global warming — and meat production's contributions to it — gains steam, USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack announced that an executive of the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) is appointed Senior Advisor to the Secretary for Environment and Climate.
In this position, Robert Bonnie, EDF's Vice-President for Land Conservation and Wildlife, will help guide broad policy and program decisions with an emphasis on those concerning the nation's natural resources and climate issues.
Bonnie is described as a leading national expert on the use of markets as a means to reward stewardship on farms, ranches and forest lands, including carbon crediting and conservation banking for endangered species.
"Robert Bonnie brings to USDA 14 years of experience at the Environmental Defense Fund where he worked to conserve natural resources and protect the climate on America's farms, ranches and forest lands," Vilsack said in a release.
"President Obama has been clear that two of his top goals for the department are related to the environment: expanding the capacity of our land, our farms, and our ranches to produce alternative forms of energy and fuel; and developing the research that will help agriculture transition away from its significant dependence on fossil fuels.
"Robert's work on conservation incentives and markets, as well as conservation policy, will help guide USDA as we address some of the most challenging issues facing our nation's future."
A Harvard graduate, Bonnie holds a master's degree in resource economics and forestry from Duke University's Nicholas School of the Environment, Durham, N.C. He grew up on a farm in Kentucky and now lives in Virginia.

People, besides US, are seeing and experiencing The One like never before. Those who aren't Nancy or Harry or Chuckie or Chrissy or Barney (on and on ad naseum), or the Legacy Media, have many reasons to be worried.

I have a tendency to fret about Hugo Chavez and how he came to power in Venezuela and managed to remain there. I see signs in Obama of an early Chavez. You buy your base with goodies and you are in like Flynn for life. You rid yourself of the middle class and your voting base becomes dependent on you to keep the goodies coming.
Posted by: Sue | April 17, 2009 at 08:59 PM
Interesting you should mention that, Po, because at the tea party I attended, I noticed that what the crowed really reacted to was anger. The speakers were obviously coached to be non-partisan, etc., and were mostly pretty boring, but here and there there was a little flash of righteous anger, and it always got the crowed going.

Repeat the next week and the next. Call out the media by name on their derisive language regarding anyone who doesn't kowtow to the ChiComm's---ask when people dissented from George Bush's worldview, they called them out for disagreeing. Have a constant feedback as to why Obama's environmental and energy policies will do nothing but endanger our economy, our security. There are reasonable solutions(ask Kim) for our environment that will not kill industries which in turn kills jobs which in turn kills families and on and on.
They need to call Holder, and Napolitano to task for their incendiary decisions to set the framework for the real extremists in the world to succeed.
On a side note, did anyone see Capt.Phillips welcome home address? He obviously was dumping on Obama's role in his rescue with his fervent praise of our military & Asking the public to always thank people in uniform. He evidently knows who saved him and doesn't believe in Janet's "veterans are crazy memo". I'm not sure where I got the link to this article at Politico, but I think I'll have to add Andrew Sullivan and Glen Greenwald to the list of folks serving up helpful insults. Having called Mike Allen a Bush mouthpiece and a journalistic hack I doubt they'll be getting any future benefit of the doubt. Disabusing mainstream media, one reporter at a time.
I think Politico actually does a pretty decent job in their particular niche. I emailed one of their writers awhile back with a complaint about an altered story. Much to my surprise, he not only responded, he explained why and how the piece had been updated, told me he hadn't thought of the issue I had raised about reference linking, and said he planned to take it up with the brass. It's become a daily read, with a lot less actual spinning than plenty of other MSM sources.

I think Andrew Sullivan should be ignored and relegated to the status he deserves: irrelevancy. There are a lot of candidates for the most intellectually dishonest blogger around, but Sullivan's claim he is a conservative really takes the cake.
