Because he can:
President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama landed in New York Sunday afternoon, and after taking a helicopter from JFK into Manhattan, drove up the West Side Highway, where the northbound lanes were shut down by police for their visit, past Ground Zero, into the Village for dinner at the Village's Blue Hill restaurant. From there, they went north to Times Square, where they went to to see a production of "Joe Turner's Come and Gone" at the Belasco Theater on West 44 Street.
Deputy Press Secretary Josh Earnest read a statement from Obama: "I am taking my wife to New York City because I promised her during the campaign that I would take her to a Broadway show after it was all finished."
Leadership!
Normally an event like this would be dressed up as a fundraiser so the national committee could pick up the tab. I don't have the impression that Michelle would spend her own money on this, so I can't wait to learn how much the taxpayer shelled out for the night out.
This Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous date night was arrogant, it was tone deaf, but it's OK because they're not Republicans.
Let's hope that the Chinese officials worried about their US Treasury holdings don't take the same tone with Obama that Congress took with the Detroit executives.
IT'S ONLY WORDS: Glenn Reynolds ends the Best Title competition with "BLAMING IT ALL on the nights on Broadway". This is a special dagger to my heart since "Nights on Broadway" is one of my all-time fave open road sing-along songs. In fact, my kids often join in with a bit of encouragement along the lines of "Hey, it's that stalker song - let's see if Dad gets "standing in the dark" and "standing in the light" reversed like he always does." Yeah, wait 'til their Alzheimer's kicks in.
If there is a God in Disco Heaven this will all come together on Monday when reporters grill Obama press flack Robert Gibbs about "Nights on Broadway" to the soundtrack of "You Should Be Dancing" and "Jive Talking".
MORE WORDS:
"Show some restraint," Obama said he told the executives, according to an interview he taped Friday with Bob Schieffer of CBS News. "Show that you get that this is a crisis and everybody has to make sacrifices."
WHAT WOULD THE MOST INFLUENTIAL LIBERAL IN THE MEDIA SAY?
Here is Paul Krugman from December 2008, urging Obama to mind his bond with the American people:
Finally, the Obama administration and Democrats in general need to do everything they can to build an F.D.R.-like bond with the public. Never mind Mr. Obama’s current high standing in the polls based on public hopes that he’ll succeed. He needs a solid base of support that will remain even when things aren’t going well.
"TODAY" SHOW CHYRONS "BROADWAY BACKLASH" inside the GM package — NBC's Savannah Guthrie: "Some are criticizing the president for the timing of a weekend trip to New York. The Obamas took a smaller Air Force One to the city for a date night. Press and staff followed in two smaller planes. ... In a statement, the White House responded [to RNC criticism]: 'The president would have been happy to take the shuttle to New York City if they'd been permitted to do so.'"
The White House tells us it was a secret service call.
Well the guy can't just sit home talking to dictators every night, can he?

The planned three-day stay, during which the president is being joined by family and former and current aides, will bring his total time spent at Camp David to all or part of 487 days.
Yes, that's 487 days. And Camp David is not even where the president has spent the most time when not at the White House: Knoller reports that Mr. Bush has made 77 visits to his ranch in Crawford during his presidency, and spent all or part of 490 days there.

Bush Gave No Sign of Worry In August 2001
CRAWFORD, Tex., April 10 -- President Bush was in an expansive mood on Aug. 7, 2001, when he ran into reporters while playing golf at the Ridgewood Country Club in Waco, Tex.
The day before, the president had received an intelligence briefing -- the contents of which were declassified by the White House Saturday night -- warning "Bin Ladin Determined To Strike in US." But Bush seemed carefree as he spoke about the books he was reading, the work he was doing on his nearby ranch, his love of hot-weather jogging, his golf game and his 55th birthday.
"No mulligans, except on the first tee," he said to laughter. "That's just to loosen up. You see, most people get to hit practice balls, but as you know, I'm walking out here, I'm fixing to go hit. Tight back, older guy -- I hit the speed limit on July 6th."

Don't worry, next time they will ride bikes into Manhattan from D.C. and then some people will complain that he's not spending time thinking about the country's problem but riding bikes or that he is pretending to be poor when he is not. Sorry, I just remembered that once you become President you can no longer give your wife a treat even on Saturdays.
Apparently, those who didn't have a problem with Air Force One flying from D.C. to Texas now have a problem with it flying from D.C. (mind you a smaller jet stream jet since it was a person visit) to New York.
O since we're in a recession I think the Obamas should remain at the White House 24-7 and weep until we recover from the recession. Forget that he's been talking about the economy virtually every week day for four months.

Here">http://www.infoplease.com/spot/campdavid1.html">Here is a decent link describing the history of Camp David. Started as a camp during the Depression for Federal workers and their families, President Roosevelt, Democrat, renamed it "Shangri-La", and inaugurated it as a Presidential Retreat in 1942, when hundreds of thousands of US Troops were at war.
All subsequent Presidents used the facility frequently excepting Truman, who's wife considered it boring. The meetings known as the Camp David Accords were hosted there by President Carter, and as of the date of this website, President Reagan spent more days there than any other President.

well, if the NYC flyby cost $330,000, this time it included Marine One, the Secret Service, NYPD, FBI, CIA, various and assorted aides and hangers on, plus I'm sure the Presidential Suite somewhere nice. I would say that date cost somewhere north of a cool $1 Million.

No problem regarding costs since they used their TARP slush fund - its there for such contingency purposes, you know. Also, you can add this to the stimulus progress report on Recovery.gov since all this overtime for the NYPD and other necessary local security is spending money at the Babylon and Rocakaways Wal-Mart. At least he didn't decide at the last minute to invite Chavez on a double date.

JMH makes an excellent point. I would love to see an analysis of the total fuel consumption of the three airplanes used to get to New York and back. It is irrelevant how much less fuel was used by the plane in which the President personally rode. The nasty little troll claims that President Bush spent time clearing brush at Camp David. I don't recall that. He did keep himself busy clearing brush at Crawford. And it is grossly unfair to hold Bush responsible for 9-11, because there was no reason to believe Bin Laden's threats were so serious and imminent, thanks to the successful efforts by the preceding administration to hamstring our intelligence and law enforcement agencies and prevent them from communicating with one another.

wow, we must be a talking point on Journo-List this morning. Such interesting people.
The point is that the Obamas have been living large and being seen to do so in a time when the rest of us are suffering. There are those things a president does as a part of the job, and usually one would find Obama's predecessors incorporating enjoyment into their work schedules.
This president seems to love the spotlight and be seen doing so. At the same time, he has asked the rest of us to tighten our belts, do as he says, and not as he does. Yeah, a great example of leadership.

What about all those whose lives and businesses were disrupted by the Obama's junket? Since it was an "Off Broadway" production Obama could have invited them to the White House.
Then there are all the diners who couldn't get a table.Think of the number of people who would have had to be vetted by the Secret Service.

President Ogabe has called upon Americans to save and invest rather than borrow and spend. I'm sure there is a perfectly good reason why Idi and Imelda increased the $2 trillion deficit by flying to NY for the evening - it probably has to do with creating or savings jobs to offset some of the 2.5 million lost since his inauguration.
Did Imelda pick up some more new shoes on the visit?
I would expect Axelrod's anal cysts to get beyond "he did it too" and focus on the President's successes to date. I'm sure they will if he ever has one.
It probably would have been better had Idi and Imelda just returned to Hog Butchers Hall in Chicago for the weekend. They could have had a few of the slumlords with whom they shared the gutter in Chicago over for a nice evenings discussion of how best to fully immiserate the fools who cast votes for an incompetent liar, thief and cheat.

I was staying at the Paramount (43rd & Broadway) one night when Clinton made a visit to a fundraising dinner next door. It was an amazing pain in the ass: traffic cleared from the Roosevelt, some major crosstown route and down — oh, hell, 7th or 8th Ave I think, I can't remember which goes downtown. Worse, it was a cold rainy night, and the hotel was locked down; if you wanted out, you couldn't leave, if you wanted in you couldn't get close.

I think it is the marie antoinette attitude that enrages us.
obama strolls into work around 9 a.m., leaves around 5-ish, in time for dinner and his evening parties. Weekends he is busy wounding fellow basketball players (who would lay a hand on obama while secret service stands by....definition of a bully).
If President Bush had done any of these things, he would have been unrelentingly attacked....but then, President Bush was a man who could take it....obama is not.
Posted by: J | May 31, 2009 at 09:49 AM
I do have to agree..there is something about
people the very common person..you have to
tighten your belt in these times..this is
supposed to be a democracy..but in reality
what does that word then actually mean? about anything? The Obamas seem like what?
or for that matter any celebrity people?
They whatever their position in life..political..athletics..stage music and
screen..do not personally live at all the
life of the common person. What should we
then expect of them and not expect of them?
Perhaps the real question is...when they
can and do all of them..live such a different personel life..that does include
big CEO types can they possibly feel our
pain to be able to get things actually done
that are needed for just the common person?
Seems though that is why the communist party
took such a hold once in places like Russia
that way sure did not work well for the
people did it.

The Republicans can not afford to be critical about such a small matter as "Date Night". A continuing bond with your spouse keeps a healthy marriage and is part the American tradition. If he doesn't spend time with his wife, he will just spend more time with a beautiful intern or something. Oops! Wrong President. This President seems to be under a microscope with every move he makes. Not to say he shouldn't be criticize just as former Presidents have been. But, at least criticize him on topics that can have an affect on taxpayers lives...you know like health care, taxes, gay marriage, immigration, and unemployment to name a few. Family value is important and part of the taxpayer's obligation to the President and his family regardless who is elected. The RNC just don't get it. They should know which battles to pick to win a war and this is not one of them. GM's situation was not caused by the President and taking his wife out will not change the outcome. Captain,
Er,not quite.
Marie Antoinette , Maria Antonia Josepha Johanna von Habsburg-Lothringen; French: Marie Antoinette Josèphe Jeanne de Habsbourg-Lorraine); Vienna, 2 November 1755 – Paris, 16 October 1793) was an Archduchess of Austria and Queen of France and of Navarre. She was the fifteenth and second before last child of Francis I, Holy Roman Emperor and of Maria Theresa, Empress of Austria.
Slightly up the scale to Michelle Antoinette.

This is the President who sent his Agriculture secretary to a presser to announce they were saving money by canceling Stan Johnson's $400,000 consulting contract.
This is the President who held an event at the WH to announce government employees were going to teleconference and buy bulk paper to save the taxpayer's money.
This is the President who announced WH staff was going to have a pay freeze if they made over $100,000/ year.
He's the one trying to sell the idea that little things add up.
Then he blows $300,000 or so on one dinner out.

Can't the dipshit lefties at least pretend to be sharp enough to get the point?
Perhaps Barry and Michelle could have done something local and a tad more frugal, considering their rhetoric.
After all, if the former CEO of GM couldn't take a business jet to DC, ON BUSINESS, without an outraged lecture from the Scold in Chief why does its present Chairman get to take three of them to NY on a date?

I'm loving the Michelle Antoinette.

"Dude! What about the National Security implications of having the POTUS on a Jetstream rather than an E-4? Isn't the whole point of Air Force One's existence is as the President's Airborne Command Post while traveling?"
Which brings up the question, was Joe "Vacuum Head" Biden in charge whilst Obama went on his junket?
Posted by: PeterUK | May 31, 2009 at 10:29 AM
Kelly, you know why they REALLY had their date night? Because at the supermarket last week, I picked up a tabloid that had a big fat headline about Michelle squashing a book by that Sinclare guy who claims that Barak was his undercover DOWN LOW lover in cocaine fueled trists..
So of course they had to look all lovie dovie.
Posted by: verner | May 31, 2009 at 10:31 AM
Slightly up the scale to Michelle Antoinette.
Dammit you're right PUK; I still stand by the rest of what I said though.

Sorry Sue got there before me.
Perhaps you shouldn't too hard on Obama, after all he has been presidenting since what? Way back in January. This is hard work when you have never had a job before.
Posted by: PeterUK | May 31, 2009 at 10:34 AM
You can rest assure that President Obama has been on top of the auto giant's situation before leaving for a night out.
And you can rest "assure" that I'll never spend dime one on a future GM/Trabant product as set up by Barry Dunham.
Posted by: Captain Hate | May 31, 2009 at 10:37 AM
Thanks for the Clarice update. I was traveling last week and must have missed that. As I recall from last year, she will return from CA and complain about how the little kid wore her out...
Hit, note that I do not not want to spoil my 2 for 2 with you by asking about the BIL's job prospect for you...but I do note it has been two weeks since you guessed it would be about two more weeks.

Nah, it's been easy for Chairman Zero. He still shakes his head every night wondering why President Bush found it so hard.
2 days to nationalize Chrysler. 2 days to nationalize GM. 2 days to nationalize the banks. A couple more days of work to destroy energy and put a final nail in the coffin of the American economy with Crap n' Trade. This stuff is easy. Bush probably just didn't follow the Marxist primer closely enough - nor surround himself with brilliant socialists who know instantly how to solve all the worlds problems.

Here's the headline from the June 8, 2009 GLOBE--available at tens of thousands of supermarket and drugstore checkout lines nationally:
OBAMA GAY COVER-UP! Michelle silences man who says he was prez's lover.
Tabloid trash? Hey tell it to Bill Clinton and John Edwards.
I only hope that the royal (I) and (ME) continues to PO Fleet Street.

Do you really want the answer to that one, Peter,? I'm tired of all the supposed omniscience supposedly granted by the Aug. 2001 PDB, it listed no names, to pursue, it had less information than the December 1998
one, it didn't include information from Phoenix, field reports from S. Florida, the FBI's report on the informant who was renting out to two of the hijackers; I know it's off topic, but it's a pet peave of mind, Along with whatever else, he was supposed to do with the situation during
Katrina, land in that free fire zone, let
the relief supplies get walloped by the hurricane.

BillAz...you forgot nationalizing the health care/ drug industry. So another two days, do you think?

"2 days to nationalize Chrysler. 2 days to nationalize GM. 2 days to nationalize the banks."
That's six days, surely The One rested on the seventh day?

Verner,
Would that not account for the gaps in Obama's history? Questions are being asked of the wrong community.

Is bourgeois capitalist plot to discredit Dear Leader. However, Oblinski's actions reminiscent of Kerensky's invitation to Bolshoi Ballet to perform decadent revanchist classic Swan Lake in recreation room of dacha prior to October Revolution.
Plot was foiled only when loyal Bolsheviki violin section refused cooperation insisting on playing prelude to Gospidin Tchaikovskii's little known 1811 overture,
creating chaos among decadent ballet corps.
All hail Oblinski, benefactor of socialist cultural flowering and Wagyu steak BBQ!

When will people stop criticism of Obama by making some comment about Bush? The world is not a sporting event in which a citizen belongs to one team or another -- it is quite possible to see the flaws in both Presidents.
I despised George Bush, did not think we had much of a choice between Obama and McCain, and now I despise Obama for his actions since he became President.
Having settled that, I suppose there is nothing left, but for Obamabots to move on and call me racist. It's going to be a very long four years.

Just checking in..The Wolverine's B-Day party was a smash success. You can sure tell when TM's hit a nerve, can't you? Axelrod swarm goes batshit.

OL:
Hit, note that I do not not want to spoil my 2 for 2 with you by asking about the BIL's job prospect for you
Well, no one bats 1.000. ;-)
No real update. The company is still sorting through candidates/interviews apparently (they've had 11 to go through). BIL gave HR a piece of his mind last week because of their foot dragging.
I still think the prospects are excellent, but waiting isn't exactly fun.

Deputy Press Secretary Josh Earnest read a statement from Obama
LOL, for real? What a name for a press secretary! You can't make this stuff up.

Good luck, hit.
Glad the wolverine's birthday was a smash, and I hope it was good and exhausting.

BillAz...you forgot nationalizing the health care/ drug industry. So another two days, do you think?
That's the next 2 page chapter in his Marxist Primer. He was off screwing around in NYC, so couldn't get to it this weekend, but yes, 2 days max.

Damn, I did not go 3/3 with Hit, and Clarice did not complain about being worn out. I'd better not play with sharp knives today.

PUK, journos are going to get sick of the Schtick, and like a jilted lover, they will turn on him big time.
And then he'll finally get vetted.
As for the tabloid stuff. Don't know if it's true and don't care about his sexual preference--except that if true,if would continue to show what a total hypocrite, liar and phoney he is.
And I find it laughable that all those democrats who were just convinced that GWB spent the 70s filling his nose with Colombian marching powder are completely incurious about Obama the crack smoker.

Wow this thread must have popped up on Axelturd's radar. A few things since it's moving so fast:
PeterUK- Obama's campaign was closer to 750 million dollars. Very curious the sour pusses in the McCain and "moderate" camp never point out the significant funding disadvantage (especially on the radio and in the mail) which probably tipped NC, VA, FL, and IN. Obama's radio and mail campaign here in FL was devastating to McCain, well before Gov. Palin was picked as VP.
Axelturds: The trip doesn't bother me. Its the tone deafness of it. Why didn't he use it to help Broadway and NY-the recession has hit them quite hard because of the finance sector job losses? He had the same sort of tone deafness in Las Vegas too, by criticising an AIG agents convention in Vegas, which caused a number of companies to back out of conventions there. He then goes to Vegas to have a fundraiser for Reid and doesn't address his comments or the difficulty that Vegas is in because of the recession. Or his complainants about CEO's taking corporate jets too DC which caused the pitchfork brigade to get hot-and-bothered and Gulfstream lost sales and had orders cancelled. So he jumps on a Gulfstream corprate jet for a flying visit to NYC. And in the "worst financial crisis ever", GM's going into a sham bankruptcy tomorrow, and North Korea is acting up, and he's got the time to take in a show and have a few glasses of wine.

((Actually I think the Marie Antoinette / Worf comparison is an insult to Marie, since she was somebody of relatively common background who was torn to shreds by the same sort of scandal mongers that keep yammering about how beautiful the Klingon lieutenant is. Plus I don't think Madame Antoinette ever held an extremely high-paying job that wasn't replaced after she left it.))
agree Marie Antoinette was torn the shreds, even worse, by the same sort of scandal mongerers that destroy people today, but where did you get that MA had a 'relatively common background'? She was an aristocrat blueblood through and through

It's so funny looking around the web today. People actually seem to be trying to sell the idea that a flight to New York for dinner is the only way to keep one's marriage happy.
