Elliott

This should be a movie...

Once upon a time in the West Wing

hit and run

Elliott, haven't seen it mentioned here, but I must send my best wishes and prayers to the Mickelson family on the horrible news for Amy.

OK, back on topic -- deep thinkers at the Times.

verner

Yo Andy!
"The need to castigate his predecessor, even as he substantially adopts the Bush administration’s counterterrorism policy, is especially unbecoming in a president who purports to transcend our ideological divisions."

No wonder the NYT made him last on the list.

centralcal

I feel about the Times like I feel about Geraldo Rivera.

Someone, please - ANYONE? - put them out of their misery.

narciso

What happened with the Mickelson family, I really hadn't heard. Andrew McCarthy is always solid, he's the only one that's really tackled the tough issue of adjudicating terrorists, Diana Amann and Matthew Waxman, really don't address the issue. Benjamin Wittes, has proven to be fairly sensible on the subject, pushing for
the national security court, on a different angle from McCarthy. I nearly fell off my chair when David Cole, uber 'human rights'
activist, came out for preventive detention.
That doesn't reassure me very much, in light of that odd comment in Sheryl
Stolberg's column; under whose authority
would they be doing this, unless they are distinguishing Quirin and Eisentrager.

hit and run

narciso:
What happened with the Mickelson family, I really hadn't heard.

Amy, Phil's wife, was diagnosed with breast cancer. Phil has suspended his PGA schedule indefintely.

I really, really, really hate cancer.

verner

Is anyone watching John McCain on Greta?

Now I know why he was my fourth, no, fifth choice...

PD

verner:

McCain's making a few good points ("of course waterboarding is torture" not being one of them), but hearing his delivery is like ingesting auditory quaaludes.

He needs a bit of an enthusiasm injection.

centralcal

verner: I posted this on the other thread:

Greta is talking to John McCain.

Has he become completely irrelevant or what? Lord, I cannot stand the main (or his daughter).

centralcal

oops - main = man.

Pofarmer

I had to hear clips of Barack Hussein's speech all afternoon.

The only thing I can conclude, if he beleives what he says, is that the guy is a moron. Has anyone seen Cleo and Barack Hussein together?

PD

Miss Cleo from psychic hotline?

verner

Let's put it this way Central

Liz is Dick's daughter
Meghan is John's daughter.

Who would you pick to be the leader of the free world based on that?

Even Allahpundit has lost his crush...

verner

By the way, they are having the best ever Cheneyku over at hotair.

Terry Gain

McCain criticizes Obama for announcing the closing of Gitmo without a plan. McCain also wants to close Gitmo. He too has no plan. Good grief, if it was easy Bush would have done it.

These rank amateurs are going to get us killed.

Captain Hate

Even Allahpundit has lost his crush...

Yeah I've even started commenting there after a long hiatus.

Pofarmer

Man, this just keeps pissin' me of more and more. I keep thinking back to the, was it two?, Marines, who were overrun by insurgents at a checkpoint and surrendered. If I recall, their tortured, gutted bodies were found in an irrigation canal. Somebody needs to ask President Numb nuts about that. They also need to ask his Harvard Law educated dickwad ass about how he's going to hold Al Queda to the Geneva Conventions. Hell, maybe he could point to when they signed them. I'm really getting fed up with the pompous, arrogant, dickheaded moron driving our country into the ground, and an awfully large portion of the chattering classes smiling and cheering on.

BTW, did anybody else catch Hannity today calling Obama outright stupid? Thought that was pretty bold.

Fresh Air

Yep. He's a dope alright. But the exact proportions of evil and stupid are still hard to detect. I'm arguing for a 60-40 mix. Others say it's 70-30. But with a guy this ignorant and lacking in the American experience it's always safe to lay in an extra $100 on stupid.

Mike Huggins

Pofarmer FTW
(or to echo Toby Charles, Pofarmer, 10. chattering dickwads, NIL!!!)

 Ann

I think we should mark May 21, 2009 as the day Obama owns everything. Liberals know this is the day he laid down a marker that he can not win with and hence the exploding heads and the smear on Dick Cheney and his daughter, Liz, begins. The question is how do we combat the media? They have always been our enemy.

I love the fact that Cheney is out there and RUSH keeps appearing on Fox but we really need the Tea Party to complain more than on certain holidays and be a visible force from now on. I have joined the Rob Portman for Senate cause in Ohio but we still need something bigger than the daily news. How do we wake people up.

I had a lunch last week with two older ladies that worked for me and they never heard of ACORN, hate what Obama is doing (which was a relief because I knew they were democrats) and were afraid for their health care plan. I finally figured out that they don't have cable because they can't afford it and don't have a computer, and don't listen to talk radio. They are scared but how do we get to that audience.

pagar

did anybody else catch Hannity today calling Obama outright

I've read several, what I would consider bold,
statements in checking different blogs this morning.

Here's one from RBO.

"Put another way: This country is facing one set of problems if it turns out that Barack Obama is very smart but also insane. We’d be facing an entirely different set of problems if he’s a stupid man whose only talent is an ear for the speech patterns of intelligent people."

LUN

Pofarmer

They are scared but how do we get to that audience.

Get em to listen to some talk radio, would be the first step.

Pofarmer

I've been a little frustrated the last month or so, trying to figure out where our "recovery" was supposedly coming from. I was "relieved" Yesterday, to learn the Fed doesn't have a clue, either. Here is a quote from the Fed meeting day before yesterday.

"Participants expected, however, that recoveries in consumer spending and residential investment initially would be damped by further deterioration in labor markets, still-tight credit conditions, and a continuing, if less pronounced, decline in house prices. Moreover, they anticipated that very low capacity utilization, sluggish growth in sales, and the high cost and limited availability of financing would contribute to further weakness in business fixed investment this year."

Folks, consumer spending and lending can't DRIVE anything. Our ship of state appears to have a very small engine, and a rudder that only turns left.

bad

The brilliant Dr. Charles Krauthammer:

The genius of democracy is that the rotation of power forces the opposition to come to its senses when it takes over. When the new guys, brought to power by popular will, then adopt the policies of the old guys, a national consensus is forged and a new legitimacy established.

That's happening before our eyes. The Bush policies in the war on terror won't have to await vindication by historians. Obama is doing it day by day. His denials mean nothing. Look at his deeds.

As I recall, Obama stressed the importance of deeds in the campaign. Hoisted on his own petard....

LUN

Rick Ballard

Pofarmer,

Even Mickey Kaus sees the failure coming. It's sort of interesting to note that Bernanke is not using his "we've got unlimited tools" BS anymore. Turbo continues to babble about the dilution of equity holders stakes in the largest banks by $57 billion being an indication of "strength" but anyone who can read a balance sheet knows that $57 billion is a rounding error wrt total liabilities involved. The combined liabilities of just BAC and C total over $3.76 trillion while the combined stockholders equity totals just $383 billion.

fdcol63

Boo-hoo. Obama whines that Bush and Cheney left a "mess".

WTF does he think was dumped in their laps on 9/11?

Grow up and govern, Obama, and stop your petty whining and finger-pointing!

jimmyk

Folks, consumer spending and lending can't DRIVE anything. Our ship of state appears to have a very small engine, and a rudder that only turns left.

Well said, Po. The Fed economists are stuck in a Keynesian mindset that mixes up cause and effect. People aren't spending because they see the fiscal trainwreck that awaits us down the road. Some stimulus.

narciso

Where do they think this wave of consumer spending is going to come from, or residential investment we seem to plumbing at least the midlevel of that misery index site, I mentioned months ago. Maybe the big spike will be next year, but the stimulus funds probably won't circulate fast enough to deal with all this cap n trade, and other myriad idiocies.

As for McCain, well he can't even pretend an opposition leader for one day. The "Inquisition, Ihe Inquisition" (a Mel Brooks reverie, from the History of the World, Part 1, seems apt) really, how about the Phillipine campaign, referenced by Charlie, some days back. It seems increasingly clear that he couldn't have served as Zachary Taylor much less William Henry Harrison. Well you all know I
supported and still do. Among other things,
that inspire my disdain, our beloved Gov, in a fit of pique, didn't pick any of the candidates in the judicial selection queue, There is such a thing as too much of a tan.

verner

Bad, thanks for posting that. Dr. K is da man. And I wonder if he lurks her, being as he pointed out the fact that Devil's Island is now a tourist resort.

I hope you read some of the comments below his article. The axelrod astroturfers are a truly disgusting lot.

Were kindergartners snubbed for the Steelers at the White House?

Parents say they were just 10 minutes late for their scheduled tour. School officials say White House staff said they needed to get ready for the president's luncheon with the Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers, so they couldn't come in............."Here we have President Obama and his administration saying, 'Here we are for the common, middle class people,' and here he is not letting 150 5- and 6-year-olds into the White House because he’s throwing a lunch for a bunch of grown millionaires," Stine said.

Here's the link, from the Corner, in the LUN, Oh and buy the way it looks like we're going to get Dawn Johnson, one of my bete noires, as recess appointment

Don't forget that the Steelers owner is a big O fan....

Kindergarteners don't have enough "change" to compete...

And on another note... I am out of a job as of today. TARP influence at work. No more contractors...

Perfect timing though... I leave for Disney World tomorrow.

Going from O's Fantasyland to a more realistic world... surreal ain't it?

Sorry about the job, Stephanie, I'll add you to the prayer list.

Verner, I'm stunned at the idiots represented in those comments. Klein really managed to stir up vitriol with his thoughtless, envious remarks. Gird your loins, we'll be seeing more of that carp.

Soooooo sorry to hear that Stephanie.

Awesome attitude. I can't tell you how much fun I've had during my forced early (and temporary) retirement.

But dang, I haven't been playing any golf. It seems all my friends that I would go play golf with during weekday mornings actually, you know, have jobs. The poor schlubs.

Jane

Bad,

DO you think she schedules her briefing at 10:00 so her constituents are still asleep?

bad

Peter Wehner:

I couldn’t help but notice that during his speech yesterday, President Obama spoke in reverential terms about the Constitution. Yet when it comes to his own judicial philosophy — and, I expect, to his Supreme Court nominee — the Constitution will be viewed with a great deal less veneration. It will be seen as a “living” document, one that has no fixed meaning and can be reinterpreted for any reason at all, with new rights being manufactured out of thin air and rights enumerated in the Constitution conveniently ignored. President Obama not only selectively invokes the Constitution to advance his ideological aims; he does so in all the wrong ways. It is an astonishing, and worrisome, thing to behold.

Indeed

bad

LOL Jane, but I think her constituents are ALWAYS asleep since they're the ones who voted her into office.

School is out and the daughter and I can go play every day... or go to the pool... or well ok, we won't go shoe shopping...

I can get the house back in order and work in the yard... or not.

Hit..If you're in the ATL area, let me know and we can play any day.

The golf team wants to put this on their t-shirts next year. What do you think?

http://corner.nationalreview.com/post/?q=YWUxNDc5YjVjZDJkYzRhYzBjY2RhMDhkY2Y1Zjg1YzU=>Hoekstra:

Hoekstra said he could not see a clear moral distinction between denying the due process of the American justice system to terrorist combatants on the one hand, and the administration's covert activities in Pakistan (which Hoekstra said he supports) on the other. In war, he said, it is acceptable to hold enemy combatants until hostilities are concluded, and if we're at war then that's what we ought to do. "If this isn't a war, then what are we doing assassinating people with no due process?" he asked. "Morally, where does that stand in comparison with waterboarding?"

Good reminder of the reason for the JMH/MayBee struggle for Hoekstra.

Which brings up a point that's been bugging me.

What a loathesome practice that has begun running amok at JOM lately -- calling dibs on people you like.

Whatever happened to the good ol' days of challenging one another to mud wrestling?

I mean, are you just going to sit back and let Sue have Cheney? After all he's done for this country, and you're not even willing to lift a finger to lay claim to him, and just sit back saying, 'well, she called him first'.

For shame.

We have lost our way, and must return the fundamental values central to the character of JOM for the preservation of this great community.

It's time to get down and dirty.

Stephanie

I will fight you for Daniel Hannan...name the time..

fdcol63

Pelosi made a very serious accusation. It goes along with the accusation that Cheney and Bush lied.

If ever there was a need for an investigation to find out the "truth", this is it.

If the Dem-led Congress refuses to do it on their own, there should be a MASSIVE popular revolt like the Tea Party Movement that will force them to do it. Otherwise, there will always be questions and doubts.

These questions and doubts only serve to help the Left who are currently pursuing Antonio Gramsci's "long march through the culture" strategy of undermining all of our major institutions and systems.

--And on another note... I am out of a job as of today. TARP influence at work. No more contractors...--

Sorry to hear that Stephanie.
I find myself on a bit of a forced hiatus myself, thanks to CA's overregulation.
After the State inspected my property this week, I have to wait 45 days for final approval of my plan and the state biologists want me to wait until September to log because there might be a Great Grey Owl nearby. They don't know that there is, they just don't know that there isn't. And the dopey bird isn't even endangered over it's whole range, there just aren't too many in CA.
What a state.

bad

OH GREAT!! Robert Gates says Gitmo is the finest prison in the world but must be shut down because of perceptions about it.

We are mortgaging our decendant's future and we have to abandon the finest prison in the world.

Can't Obama just rename the place after himself and change the world's mind about the place....

Stephanie

Thanks Ignatz... sorry to hear you're on hiatus...

I'd be productive and use the time for bird hunting, but that's just me... maybe invite Cheney?

fdcol63

Obama and the Dems contributed to the negative perceptions about Gitmo and our treatment of detainees, all for political opportunism and opposition.

The world would have a different view of Gitmo - and AMERICA - if the Dems had had the best interests of the nation at heart instead of their petty desire to bash Bush at all costs.

Spare me the pretentious indignation of this self-fulfilling perception!

One of the other unfortunate things about CA is I would probably serve more time for shooting an owl than shooting a person.

I crack myself up this morning!

MayBee

You are funny this morning, Stephanie!

fd- What could be more genius than spreading lies about something you don't like, then calling for it to be ended because the misconceptions hurt America?

Next up: CIA must be defunded not because it's ineffective, but because people wrongly believe they regularly mislead Congress.

bad

Toby Harnden:

But the very fact that Obama chose to schedule his speech (Cheney's was announced first) at exactly the same time as the former veep was a sign of some weakness.

Legal Insurrection:

I think it's more than weakness. Rather, Obama seems uncomfortable with dissenting voices being heard without a rebuttal. The war of words is one Obama is confident he can win if only he is heard, which is why Obama constantly is holding prime time press conferences, giving major speeches, and so on. While the need to counter-schedule a speech to offset Cheney's previously planned speech reflects weakness for sure, it also reflects a lack of faith on Obama's part in the ability of the American people to decide important issues.

Supreme confidence in his ability to manipulate is very important for a con man.

" ... it also reflects a lack of faith on Obama's part in the ability of the American people to decide important issues."

God, I hope the American public has this ability. The recent CA elections give me a little hope.

But in my more pessimistic moments, I have serious doubts that this is true. After all, these same people helped elect him in the first place, despite the fact that there was plenty of evidence available in the public domain that showed Obama for what he truly is, and indicated how he would govern and what policies he would push once he became president.

My fear is still that this past election was a tipping point, wherein 30+ years of liberal indoctrination in the MSM, academia, Hollyweird, and bureaucracy have succeeded in brainwashing the majority of Americans into accepting the core tenets of their ideology.

Things like the Tea Party Movement and New Media may make some inroads, but these will be outnumbered and overtaken by the consequences of illegal immigration, further indoctrination if liberals maintain control of the major information and education outlets, the apathy of most Americans when it comes to politics and policy, and the desire of most Americans to be "liked" by the rest of the world at the cost of their security.

centralcal

Well, Obama really didn't really want to give this speech. He had to. I mean, he wasn't elected to be a national security president. He is a domestic president, and that's his agenda.

But his hand was forced because there was an open rebellion in Congress over the Guantanamo issue. The senators wanted a decision, and he gave them an essay. The senators wanted a president, and he gave them a professor.

What he did was he outlined the five categories of prisoners in Guantanamo, an interesting exercise that you would expect out of a graduate student, in which you have got those who can be tried in regular courts and those who have to be in military tribunals, and those that will not be taken by allies, as if any allies are taking them, et cetera, et cetera. I mean, a freshman in college could tell you that.

From the article:

In 2007, Obama said, “That’s easy. Close down Guantanamo.” On Thursday, he said, “Let me be blunt: There are no neat or easy answers here.”

ObamaSpeak lives. I love how he's "blunt," as though informing us of a truth that we have all denied and refused to face up to, and only he is the one that's been facing reality and is reminding us of the harsh truth.

When the truth is that we all knew this from the get go, and people have been trying to get him to understand it for months, and he is the one that's been living the delusion and is just now waking up to the truth.

Standard Obama rhetorical trick: Implicitly accuse everyone else of the false understanding that he himself suffers from while pretending to be the sole repository of wisdom.
