Ralph Peters excoriates Obama's new arms deal with Russia:
President Obama's ideological bias against nuclear weapons dates back to his undergraduate years. Yet those weapons kept the peace between the world's great powers for 64 years. A few remarks about deterrence notwithstanding, Obama just doesn't get it.
He agreed to trim our nuclear-warhead arsenal by one-third and -- even more dangerously -- to cut the systems that deliver the nuclear payloads. In fact, the Russians don't care much about our warhead numbers (which will be chopped to a figure "between 1,500 and 1,675"). What they really wanted -- and got -- was a US cave-in regarding limits on our nuclear-capable bombers, submarines and missiles that could leave us with as few as 500 such systems, if the Russians continue to get their way as the final details are negotiated.
Moscow knows we aren't going to start a nuclear war with Russia. Putin (forget poor "President" Dmitry Medvedev) wants to gut our conventional capabilities to stage globe-spanning military operations. He wants to cut us down to Russia's size.
Our problem is that many nuclear-delivery systems -- such as bombers or subs -- are "dual-use": A B-2 bomber can launch nukes, but it's employed more frequently to deliver conventional ordnance.
Putin sought to cripple our ability to respond to international crises. Obama, meanwhile, was out for "deliverables" -- deals that could be signed in front of the cameras. Each man got what he wanted.
Here is the Times description:
The limit on delivery vehicles — land-based intercontinental missiles, submarines-based missiles and bombers — would be somewhere from 500 to 1,100, down from the 1,600 currently allowed.
The Russians are pushing for deeper cuts in delivery vehicles because their missiles generally fit more warheads than American missiles. American officials said this treaty would not address warheads stored in reserve, an issue something the Russians have wanted to include in the past.
Folks who enjoy a stroll down memory lane will recall that the B2 bomber flew missions in Bosnia out of Missouri.
Presumably, if we currently have 1,198 delivery systems now and the agreed new cap is 1,100, it is not that big a deal. Cutting down to the proposed lower limit of 500 sounds preposterous.
Why the surprise? Obama is only doing what he was trained to do .

I believe that Obama and the Democrat Congress have also shut down the Reliable Replacement Warhead program. Obama and the Dems are on the way to doing incalculable damage to our national security. It is the single most important reason for individuals to support the GOP in the 2010 and 2012 elections, even for individuals with concerns about the GOP not being sufficiently libertarian or not being sufficiently traditional on social policy or not being more open to a more tolerant social policy or not being sufficiently whatever on whatever. If we lose this country to the conciliatory internationalists, the other policy issues won't matter.
If McCain were President, this wouldn't be happening.
I would urge any folks thinking of abandoning the GOP for a third party movement to think about the impact on our national security of facilitating Obama's reelection by splitting the anti-Obama vote. Worry about the libertarian or social agenda or tax rate or budget deficit or local control or whatever issues after the drag down America Dems have been voted out of office.

What would your reaction be to a Reform Party which endorsed candidates from either major party who accepted the Reform Party platform? For example, what if a Republican challenger to Murkowski in the AK '10 primary accepted the endorsement of a Reform Party which had a platform such as that espoused by Palin when she resigned from the Alaska Oil & Gas Commission due to the stench emanating from the elder Murkowski? (h/t Elliot)

Folks who enjoy a stroll down memory lane will recall that the B2 bomber flew missions in Bosnia out of Missouri.
Heck, they have flown missions to Iraq (both wars) from Pofarmer's back 40. Until they made the deal with the UK to base some at Diego Garcia, every operational B-2 flight originated and ended at Whiteman. Because the B-2 is not capable of supersonic flight, many missions exceeded 30 hours duration.

I think this has been mentioned, but thought it worth repeating. For Palin supporters feeling dejected over the Palin wars, I suggest reading Paul Mirengoff's piece on Power Line. The post itself will make you see red, but the comments will cheer you right up. He gets totally schooled by a large number of smart people and the tone remains mostly reasonable and civil throughout. I think I've read at least 150 of the 200+ comments and even in a moderated forum, only two people so far have come to his defense.
Posted by: Porchlight | July 07, 2009 at 04:17 PM
There is a lot to say for your proposal, Rick. At some point, the Heath Shuler/Evan Bayh type Dems, though reluctant to abandon the Dem party, might support policies that would undercut the Pelosi-Reid Congress, including supporting Palin type strong national security/energy production policies. My only concern is that a Reform type movement not be limited to the free market concerns that I hear expressed by many who are threatening to abandon the GOP. A strong national security position is a necessary condition, in my view, for a free market framework to be viable.
How about a reform movement that doesn't involve a third party but makes it clear that substantial effort will be devoted to toppling RINOs and supporting GOPers and Dems who stand firmly for strong national security policies?
Posted by: Thomas Collins | July 07, 2009 at 04:18 PM

Porchlight,
Concerning Palin's comments of support. Yesterday on Local Talk up here the "Conservative" Host was rejoicing at her resignation, but strangely, as the day went on and the calls came in, the reasoned response from callers seemed to be support for Sarah's actions and disagreement with the Host's position. I was not disheartened at all, and though I wanted to strangle the host for his juvenile attitude and straw-man tactics in pushing his conclusions, the average Joe on the street let it be known they were generally supportive of Sarah's move, both for the State and for the National Political scene, and were wise enough to let the scenario play out a bit before leaping to adolescent Anti-Sarah conclusions.
But boy, do we need a decent media. When the number 1 Conservative Local Talk Host in the State is quoting Maureen Dowd as an authoritative source on accurately analyzing Sarah Palin, one begins to realize how ill served is the populace of this State.

from Tapper: "America supports now the restoration of the democratically-elected President of Honduras, even though he has strongly opposed American policies,” the president told graduate students at the commencement ceremony of Moscow’s New Economic School. “We do so not because we agree with him. We do so because we respect the universal principle that people should choose their own leaders, whether they are leaders we agree with or not."
I bet he looked so dignified as he totally ignored the facts involved.

Rich, my reaction to Murtha and Webb is that it would be good to topple them if the GOP opponents were committed to fighting for Reliable Replacement Warhead funding and to resisting Obama's attempted emasculation of our delivery system. More on T Boone Pickins on hard times:
Plans for the world's largest wind farm in the Texas panhandle have been scrapped, energy baron T. Boone Pickens said Tuesday, and he's looking for a home for 687 giant wind turbines.
Pickens has already ordered the turbines, which can stand 400 feet tall -- taller than most 30-story buildings.
"When I start receiving those turbines, I've got to ... like I said, my garage won't hold them," the legendary Texas oilman said. "They've got to go someplace."
Pickens' company Mesa Power ordered the turbines from General Electric Co. -- a $2 billion investment -- a little more than a year ago. Pickens said he has leases on about 200,000 acres in Texas that were planned for the project, and he might place some of the turbines there, but he's also looking for smaller wind projects to participate in. He said he's looking at potential sites in the Midwest and Canada.
In Texas, the problem lies in getting power from the proposed site in the panhandle to a distribution system, Pickens said in an interview with The Associated Press in New York. He'd hoped to build his own transmission lines but he said there were technical problems.
$2 Billion of turbines wont fit in his garage! Given his out and out pimping of wind as a front to sell back up nat gas systems, I find this rather funny.

No other word fits quite so well and precision in communication is a benefit to clarity while obfuscation through sophistry is a detriment.

Dirty little secret is that the F-22 is nearly as stealthy as the B2, and could accomplish many of it's missions if it had to. Problem is, they aren't in favor of funding the F-22 either. This will make Clintoon's attempted gutting of the military look tame.

I think you should send Steele back his survey and tell him you are sending your money to Sarah.

Suggested response:
Dear Mr. Steele,
I am unfamiliar with you. Do you have some connection with the Republican party?

I realize people get paid to spam the boards with crap sites but I can't believe anyone actually clicks on those things so how good a marketing device can this be? Seriously.

Sue,
I saw an RNC survey where it had three options in the donation box:
"Yes, I've enclosed a donation of X," "I've enclosed Y to cover the cost of tabulating the survey," and "No, I'd like to see more liberal democrats elected to Congress over the next decade."

Sue,
My comment is "awaiting moderation". Apparently BlueHawk doesn't want to address the malice issue. Liberals are such cowards.

Hit that link was a disappointment.

Elliott,
I didn't get that one.

I need to take a cold shower after that hit link.

Jane,
My comment is "awaiting moderation".
Really? None of mine have said that. They show right up.

LOL, PD
I have been sending all requests for money back filled with tea bags. The postage is paid by the RNC. However, I will have to add PD's advice on the next one. :)

Jane: keep me posted on the gathering.
Meanwhile, apropos to the title of this thread...

Better
I am unfamiliar with you. Do you have some connection with Sarah Palin?

I just have to comment on what Jermaine Jackson said today. "I was your voice and your backbone". I hope he misspoke.

Sue:
If it has a postage paid return envelope, use it to send 'em your own wish list, and tell 'em they'll get a check when you see some progress.
I used to get solicitations from Jesse Helms and I always sent back outraged comments just to make them shell out the postage.

JMH,
I'm tempted to do that, but I feel guilty wasting their money even though they don't feel the same guilt. Someone donated to them and it wasn't so I could waste their money. Besides, Steele will never see it. Some flak in the mailroom will weed out those that don't conform to what they were looking for. Plus, my very own congressman had to have given them my information, since it is him I have been communicating with. And he has come through, each and every time. I'm going to have to sleep on it.

Translation: I love quoting myself
He sure does. Doesn't anyone pick up on that? I mean besides us. Ah, who am I kidding. I do wonder what the DC cocktail chitchat is like, though. I bet more than a few Dems are snickering with each other over some of Barry's stupider statements, Michelle's outfits, Biden, etc.

Sue,
I don't think there's anything wrong with filling out the survey honestly, even if you don't send money.
I did get an NRCC mailing to support the "John Boehner for Speaker" campaign which I'm considering donating to. Specific, good candidates I can deal with - it's the generic RNC mush that is harder to support.
However, we have to have an RNC, and they have to have money. If I'm going to take pleasure hearing that "the RNC outraised the DNC by $___," I can't fairly trash them outright.
