I don't know who he is, Sue, but it must be annoying to have to continually hold up one's pants. And he doesn't seem to be very good at it.

Must be a government worker.

I adore Mark Steyn - I laughed so hard yesterday driving back to work after lunch -
Uigher Wednesday! HA!

The idea that the G-8 leaders passed a resolution saying they'll only allow a 2 degree temperature change just cracks me up.

How does that not sound ridiculous to people?

Next up, a resolution vowing they will not allow the sun to get any brighter.

Maryland firm Smartronix has won what seems like an enormous $18 million contract to re-design the Recovery.gov website.

Couldn't our friends at TypePad do the same quality job for about $17,999,000 less money?

Over at Politico they have a bit about a feud between CNNs Cafferty and Alec Balwin. It brightened my day

What is his next job on which to focus?

He's a bodyguard. Someone said she needed bodyguards, so they imitated what they new.. Gangsta Style.

Has the prezzy limo been outfitted with spinners, yet?

BTW how can he draw a gun if the need arises when he's holding his low riders to keep em from falling to his ankles?

Should I denounce myself???

Dressed like that, he could only be an unarmed bodyguard. Secret Service were all over that group, so I was guessing a relative.

I had heard relatives have gone along with Michelle and the girls on other trips, but it was just in a comments section somewhere. I don't know the facts.

Re: the USA Today story matt linked about stimulus money going overwhelmingly (so far) to areas that backed Obama, I thought the last pgh was interesting (my bold):

The imbalance didn't start with the stimulus. From 2005 through 2007, the counties that later voted for Obama collected about 50% more government aid than those that supported McCain, according to spending reports from the U.S. Census Bureau. USA TODAY's review did not include Alaska, which does not report its election results by county.

Didn't we have a troll in here recently claiming that red states overwhelmingly received more federal dollars than blue states?

And notice the URL of the story has "red_blue" at the end, even though red state/blue state terminology wasn't used in the article. Interesting.

clarice

I'd expect those areas to get more money--they are prog hells full of those unable to read, write, or hold down a job.

Pagar

he'll use the regulatory agencies to enact much of the stuff anyway.

Or just have his union friends take care of it.

On July 6th, President Obama nominated 10 individuals for key Administration posts. One of these individuals is Daniel R. Elliott III.

He has been nominated as Chaiman, Surface Transportation Board (source: whitehouse.gov). Elliott currently serves as Associate General Counsel of the United Transportation Union.

So by spending $1.3 Million, the UTU guaranteed proper representation on the Surface Transportation Board.

$1.3 million dollars buys union control of Surface Transportation in the US. Wat could go wrong?

The sag away saunter.

Look, Ma, no hands. Have you seen the video of the Japanese guy pulling his pants on without using his hands? Same technique. It's all in the gait, which holds the perps pants up.

Porchlight

Me, too, clarice. But I was surprised to see USA Today not only cover it but also imply (via the headline and in the story) that it is politically motivated. Looks like 0's falling approval ratings are having an effect already.

For sure, MayBee. People are starting to notice, too.

Why does he make his daughter fair game?

jean, that's a fascinating link at 1:18. People turning on electrical devices to cause blackouts during Ahmadi-Nejad's speech? Now that's widespread discontent.

How about Obama send them a couple aircraft full of peace signed T-Shirts. Think they'll get the political message?

Jane

I just got off the radio with Dr. Mehdi Noorbaksh. He surprised me in some ways. I asked him about Obama releasing the Qod terrorists today, supposedly to get Ahmadinejad to talk with him. He said that up until now not taking sides was the right thing, but talking to Ahmadinejad would be the worse thing he could do.

He also admitted that the protesters wanted a secular Iran and not an Islamic republic.

It was fun.

Stephanie

Relatives would fit... I would hope the SS would as soon as rebel than to dress like that.

Didn't the Russians report the entourage at 600 give or take... seems like there was a tweet by Tapper or Major about that.

Saw Larry Lindsay this morning on CNBC. The short version; it was a political bill not an economic one, and as such it's having a very muted effect on the economy, and as a bonus it's probably too late for the additional stimulus considering the distorting effect it would have on the bond market.

bad

To me, even $875 seems a lot for a purse.

Well, PD, I'm no lady but I've never owned a purse that cost that much.

However, I don't care how much people spend on things if they are spending they're own money and financially self-sufficient.

But when they flaunt items like that, and tell me I need to sacrifice and eat differently and change my thermostat setting while they preach about leading by example, I'll nail their ass for stupidity everytime.

Fresh Air

How are brother George in Kenya and Aunt what's-her-name in Boston doing?

I hear they are subsisting on a diet composed entirely of cake.

But sniffing glue's a no-no. And speed kills.

jean, the url is just the website address. Even I can do that. But cut and paste is too much for me; I like the taste of the paste too much to be effective at that. Now, try the LUN.

clarice

Jean if you go to the address at the top of the page--that's the url. Hold the right ride of the mouse there and click on copy. Bring that to the url website thingy on the post packet and click paste--(as they say in Oklahoma VIOLA!)

jean

Heck now I can't find anything interesting to try out this cut& paste stuff.

Porchlight

To me, even $875 seems a lot for a purse. What do you ladies say?

The only things I own that cost $875 or more are my house, my car, my laptop (barely), my king size bed, and my engagement ring. Nothing else even comes close. I doubt I have ever paid more than $50 for a purse if that.

My question about the purse - is the WH claiming that it is indeed a VBH purse that retails for $6K, but Michelle got a deal on it? Or are they saying it's an $875 purse from another company? If the latter, it would be nice to know which purse and from what company.

GMax

Hold the presses! This just in.

WaPo reporting that Crap and Charade has been pushed back on the Senate calendar. To September.

That means they dont have the votes today. And it likely means, they wont have the votes in September, and as Obama slides down the approval slide, he exhortations will mean little to changing that dynamic.

One down one to go.

clarice

I think the WH is lying. But--it is clear that on some other countries the first lady is given the designer wear for promotional reasons. Why do you suppose Ms Bruni is always in Dior?

I think here some deisgners give clothes to the FLOTUS at cost for the same reason though given the ethics pecksniffers that may be a problem. Personally, I think they ought to be free to provide it if the WH then donates it to charities for auction.

Not every president can afford to pay the megabucks this endeavor seems to require.

Extraneus

What I read in the article this morning was that they claim the purse "retailed" for $875, not that she paid $875, so the implication was that it wasn't the brand claimed. The VBH rep essentially called them liars, but guess what! The article at the same link has completely changed. (They even removed the picture of the $6K bag. :-)) And the VBH rep is eating her words.

Call it a case of mistaken identity.

Italian luxury goods manufacturer VBH boasted yesterday that First Lady Michelle Obama had toted their $5,950 alligator manila clutch earlier this week while on a trip to Russia.

No way, said the White House, which countered that the First Lady was carrying an $875 VBH patent leather clutch.

After sticking to their initial claim, the high-end leather manufacturer is now backing off. "If that's what the White House is saying, then it's a patent bag," admitted VBH rep Kelly Vitko.

Despite being certain about the bag being the nearly $6,000 version – β€œit’s definitely ours [manila bag],” she said earlier this morning -- the rep now says that she made an assumption and misidentified the bag.

bad

Hey EX!! I wonder if they threatened to Palin her family if she didn't back down?

Porchlight

Thanks, clarice. I know the couture houses are hot to have the first ladies in their clothes. I like the idea that the stuff be free if it's donated to charities, but someone would have to keep up with that (because I certainly don't trust the current occupiers of the WH to do it).

It is true that it would cost quite a bit to outfit a First Lady properly. But she doesn't have to carry $6K purses. And I think we are at least entitled to know about it if she's getting this stuff at cost or gratis.

Dorothy Jane

I have owned the same tapestry bag purchased from J Jill for 6 years now. It was $125.00. Pro rated it is $20.83 per year...

Porchlight

"If that's what the White House is saying, then it's a patent bag," admitted VBH rep Kelly Vitko.

So the WH is saying same brand, different model. Well, I suppose we'll just have to take their word for it. It is pretty funny that an $875 bag is supposed to be no big deal, though.

The little mini-flap over this will at least ensure those price tags get noticed by more people.

Dorothy Jane

$875 is ridiculous. I really think if the walked the walk - she would only be carrying purses from Macy's and the kids should carry bags from Target - like the rest of America...

Porchlight

That sounds about right to me, Dorothy Jane. The kids wear a lot of J. Crew which is fine with me, too. It seems MO wears some J. Crew to provide cover for the really expensive stuff she "accessorizes" with.

Extraneus

I don't think Barbara or Laura Bush had $500 sneakers, or $6K purses. Perhaps Laura had an $875 bag, but surely not one for walking in the woods.

We need an in-depth investigation. Perhaps after the crack team is through looking into the NYC flyover.

bad

I want them to wear and have whatever they want at whatever cost but to shut the hell up about leading by example and sacrifice.

Dorothy Jane

J Crew is fine - But even J Crew can be pricey. An entire outfit can cost close to $1000 from top to bottom. I really think if they wanted to show an affinity for regular America, they would dress from Target and Walmart every now and then. It can be done. You would think they would have done that. It is so EASY. Imagine the headline - MO sports jeans and top from Target - total cost $64....

MayBee

I want them to wear and have whatever they want at whatever cost but to shut the hell up about leading by example and sacrifice.

Exactly.

Warren Buffet: Economy Needs Another Stimulus to Get It Up By: Scarecrow Thursday July 9, 2009 8:25 am

Warren Buffet joins the growing chorus of economic experts who say we need another, better stimulus.

I don't care how much the first family spend on clothes, I just think it's hilarious how foolish the left looks now at getting their panties in bunch over Palin's wardrobe.

Porchlight

I would like that better, Dorothy Jane.

bad also makes a good point. But since they haven't and likely won't refrain from touting their own sacrifice and the good example they're setting, I think it's fair to point out excess.

clarice

I'm with bad. I don't care what they wear or what they paid for it so long as they shut their traps about everyone else sacrificing. And MO shows her tin ear again in claiming the bag is ONLY $875.

Extraneus

Fun, too.

clarice

The truth is--MO has placed herself in a vanity trap. She wants to be remembered like Jackie for being stylish. OTOH (a) people were stupider then about the cost of those JO getups and the Kennedys themselves and (b) JO had finagled a very substantial clothing allowance out of Old Joe.

I emember ladies for whom in the 60's $30 was the outside limit for a dress swooning about how "simply but elegantly" JO dressed never once imagining they were looking at a king's ransom wardrobe.
Simple costs more.

Topsecretk9

claiming the bag is ONLY $875.

Product placement has been around a long time, but the Obamas are getting obscene--it's more like product shakedown. And with O taking more of Americans money and rights everyday--it's no wonder his numbers aren't lower. People (the mainstream media are not people) are catching on! Makes the brouhaha about Sarah's wardrobe pushed on her by witless backstabbers come into better focus.
Can't wait to hear more about your interview, Jane. And thanks again, for the info on the tea party.
Clarice, thanks for the purse info. I have the candles and crystals and my bible working to be able to go to DC for the tea party. See you in September.........

Dorothy Jane

"Is promoting the new Camaro as teh Gayest muscle car in the U.S. really the best marketing campaign?"

A mere sop - no to marriage - yes! to wheels!

HEH, Po, that Camaro link was hilarious.

PD

I'd like to them to shut up *and* lead by example and sacrifice.

Unfortunately, ain't no way He Who Loves to Hear Himself Talk is going to shut that trap.

bad

I have such low expectations for them, PD. Shame on me...

clarice

Glenda, I was able to get a couple fairly priced rooms at my club near the White House but there are no more available. If you or anyone else decides to come, try out these bed and breakfasts for reasonable accommodations:http://www.bbonline.com/dc/embassycircle/

During the week hotels here can be very pricey. narciso stayed at one of these and liked it.

Sue

J Crew issued a press release this week on what the Obama girls were wearing. The trench coat Sasha was wearing that Daddy so lovingly mentioned as Agent 99 wannabe strolling the halls of the Kremlin was J Crew. What I want to know is do the Obamas pay full price for the outfits? When Beanie Babies issued a Malia/Sasha baby, Michelle went all huffy on them and said it was inappropriate to use her children for product endorsements. She has been very silent about J Crew's press release. A press release describing, right down to the dollar amount, how to look like Malia and Sasha.

$875 this and $500 that show that deep done... and probably shallow down... Mo is unhappy about herself. Can't say she doesn't deserve to feel that way.

Protesters Met with Tear Gas, Batons

New Videos Show Renewed Protests in Iran

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) - Thousands of protesters streamed down avenues of the capital Thursday, chanting "death to the dictator" and defying security forces who fired tear gas and charged with batons, witnesses said. The first opposition foray into the streets in 11 days aimed to revive mass demonstrations that were crushed in Iran's postelection turmoil.
Iranian authorities had promised tough action to prevent the marches, which supporters of opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi have been planning for days in Internet messages. Heavy police forces deployed at key points in the city ahead of the marches, and Tehran's governor vowed to "smash" anyone who heeded the demonstration calls.

In some places, police struck hard. Security forces chased after protesters, beating them with clubs on Valiasr Street, Tehran's biggest north-south avenue, witnesses said.

Women in headscarves and young men dashed away, rubbing their eyes as police fired tear gas, in footage aired on state-run Press TV. In a photo from Thursday's events in Tehran obtained by The Associated Press outside Iran, a woman with her black headscarf looped over her face raised a fist in front of a garbage bin that had been set on fire.

But the clampdown was not total. At Tehran University, a line of police blocked a crowd from reaching the gates of the campus, but then did not move to disperse them as the protesters chanted "Mir Hossein" and "death to the dictator" and waved their hands in the air, witnesses said. The crowd grew to nearly 1,000 people, the witnesses said.

"Police, protect us," some of the demonstrators chanted, asking the forces not to move against them.

The protesters appeared to reach several thousand, but their full numbers were difficult to determine, since marches took place in several parts of the city at once and mingled with passers-by. There was no immediate word on arrests or injuries.

It did not compare to the hundreds of thousands who joined the marches that erupted after the June 12 presidential election, protesting what the opposition said were fraudulent results. But it was a show of determination despite a crackdown that has cowed protesters for nearly two weeks.

What's the deal with Malia Obama and the peacenik tee-shirt?

This is disturbing on so many levels.

The egos of these two dim-wits (POTUS & FLOTUS) have been inflated by the press to catastrophic levels. Barry - the ONE, Michelle - beauty & fashion ICON. They are like two Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade balloons, theatrically floating above our heads, breathlessly described by the network color commenters, all the while controlled by their handlers on the ground.

This will not end well.

Bad, I think the Obamas actually believe it. They are wallowing in their power and celebrity. Their dinners, their trips, their entourages, their damn posturing and preening vanity.
