Torn from the headlines:
Thank heaven for studies:
Using data from a government health survey of U.S. adults, researchers found that in general, the amount of time people devoted to exercise tended to inch up along with the number of alcoholic drinks they had each month.
I attribute that to jock culture - try watching any sporting event without being told you aren't having fun with your friends unless you are drinking a beer. OK, or driving a pick-up truck. As a second guess, I will note the exercise-reward phenomena - some people think a bit of exercise entitles them to splurge later.
The experts behind the study do encourage people to focus on cause and effect:
Not surprisingly, the findings do not mean that drinking is the key to launching an active lifestyle.
"We certainly would not advocate that abstainers should start drinking or light drinkers should start drinking heavily as a way to increase their exercise," lead researcher Dr. Michael T. French, of the University of Miami, told Reuters Health in an email.
Thank heaven for experts.
Thank heaven for government surveys. I wouldn't know what to do with the money they take from me.

it probably has to do with softball and bowling.....

I don't need to be told I'm not having fun with my friends unless I am drinking a beer. It's true. Have you met any of my friends?

I am out of breath already from just opening the damn bottle.
Pretty soon I am going to be looking like Arnaaald and its not even 5:00 yet.
OT: Regarding quality of health care, I wonder if Kevin Drum and his ilk read the Jacksonville Times Union? Maybe they should. I don't want to hear anymore about the NHS compared to our free market private health care. LUN

O/T: I cannot stop laughing. Over at Michelle Malkins she has a post about lefties trying to generate book sales (nearly all #1 are conservative books) with this offer:
"It never hurts to offer a little incentive, especially if your incentive has the potential to drive extreme right wingers crazy, so among our prizes is a grand-prize of a trip for two to Honolulu, Hawaii for a private tour of the hospital where President Obama was born, followed by an opportunity to take part in a community service project there on MLK Day of Service, January 18, 2010."
Then to add to my laughter, one of the commenters wanted to know "which of the two fraggin' hospitals" they were gonna tour?
These people are hysterical! I bet everyone can hardly wait to "win" participation in a community service project. [snort]

Obama to fly over Californian wildfires?

Man they will let me clean bedpans at one of the two hospitals where Barack was born? Where do I sign?

omg - even more laughter from Politico (Michael Calderone):
"Salon's Glenn Greenwald "knows little about politics, less about journalism and cares not a whit about the national security of the United States. [snip]
....What I have seen from him, ad nauseum, are intemperate attacks in which he questions the character of--no, it's worse than that: he slimes--anyone who has the temerity to disagree with him.
I agree with Greenwald on some things, and appreciate his insights on others. But he is a thoroughly dishonorable person--as he proved by releasing my private emails--and, when it comes to his oft-trumpeted belief in the right to privacy, a stone hypocrite as well."
So sayeth Joe Klein of Time!!!!
I love it when lefties slap each other.

"My advice to you is to start drinking heavily."
Otter was way ahead of his time.

I thought Obama was born in a stable, heralded by angels and whatnot.
Really...the idolatry of this man is truly depressing when you think about it.
Otter was way ahead of his time.
I spent most of my undergraduate years operating on that theory.
I just watched the movie on Saturday. Even all these years later is cracks me up.

Got your stories crossed there, Soylent.
Actually he was born in Mecca and was raised by his uncle.

As for drinking and exercising, we *never* drink while exercising and do not allow friends to, either.

In Munich, the waitresses at the Hofbrauhaus (excuse the lack of umlauts) are the only ones to get exercise, but you should see those biceps!
Posted by: matt | August 31, 2009 at 07:17 PM
The toned arms of the Bavarian waitresses come from hauling many 1-liter mugs at a time to the thirsty and/or drunk.
Gsuffa!
Other good news - I just read that beer can help slow osteoporosis.

The funniest thing is going on at Tapper's site. They are cheering Obama killing terrorists. In fact, they are arguing he is better at killing them than Bush was. Strange days indeed!

CBC apologized, Obama isn't really President either.
Posted by: Kimmik | August 31, 2009 at 09:33 PM
Is Obama reaching the point of no retunr on public opinion?
Some folks look at Ras and say he's getting close to that point.

And Zogby has 42% approval. Maybe regular Americans are waking up politically after many decades of slumber. Or not. It'll be believable when the budget is balanced and under 20% of GDP.
Treat yourself to this over at Charlie's.

Uh...I sure hope they corrected for age. Otherwise, one would observe the obvious, that both exercise and drinking correlate inversely with age. That is, folks tend to both exercise and drink more in their twenties than in their forties.

I was seeing how Gibbs, is mumbling why Cheney is still taken seriously. Because he can shoot you for laughing too hard, (a take off on the Time Life Western series)
And they dragged General Jones, fromwhatever
cubicle they've stuffed him in, to rebut Cheney)

A well-made G&T is mother's milk for the older set. That is why we are so well preserved.
O/T: Is it just me or does anyone else get a Michael Jackson vibe from the video of al-Gaddafi. Very creepy look he's got going for him.

Every time I watch one of those kinds of videos, I root for the chimp to flip out and beat his tormentor's ass.
The fact that this was Japanese TV made me root even harder than usual.

You think that's creepy — a litle googling will reveal pictures of Gaddafi in drag.

There is an old Ukrainian saying: “The person who does not drink is or very ill, or very big bastard”
I sense autocorellation here…

Consider the downside, if you drink and drink and don't get some exercise, you will simply balloon and die.
