Michelle Malkin explains the background of the eleven-year old girl who was allowed a question about the "mean" posters opposing Obama's health reform; turns out her mother was an early Obama supporter in New Hampshire who went on to become a delegate to the Democratic Convention.

C'mon, it's For The Children!  Let's just be grateful that the town hall was not devoted to global warming, or seven year olds would have been brought in to rant about how we are destroying "their" planet.  Hiding behind kids is all part of the Democratic strategy to appeal to reason rather than fear.

And do remember - children are useful props for the Obama message machine except when they don't want them to be.

I think we're missing the central theme here:

The Obama camp objects to the opposition using kids in their advertising and materials, but does it themselves;

The Obama camp objects to using Obama's children in particular, but uses Palin's;

The Obama camp objects to Nazi symbolism in attacks on their positions, but didn't have a problem with it against Bush.

I think the common point here is that they just think its really unfair and inappropriate to make any criticism of their positions.

Bravo yourself. Your rhetorical question nicely illustrates the rationing issue (and the life-and-death decisions being made by IMAC and subordinated boards). I can see why you'd complain about calling it a "death panel," but your own example demonstrates that's a more honest description than the President's obfuscations to the contrary. (Just as the "single payer" video is more honest than his latter claim it was never his goal.)

But that's the last thread. This one is about why he has a town hall set up as a kabuki theater, with selected questioners, bussed in supporters, and dem operative plants. That's a different kind of lie, but certainly one that ought to be of interest to those concerned about government process (and the consent of the governed from which government's "just powers" are derived). It certainly explains why he can't find an audience member to argue with, despite the fact that a solid majority oppose his plan.

As a "veteran of the Alhambra California town hall front" (Adam Schiff D-CA 29th Congressional District) held last night, I can report that the Dems have found a way to succeed at town halls. A large crowd --two thousand plus or so--heavily laden with union and Barack Obama supporters and organizers. I counted SEIU, AFL-CIO, California Nurses Association, ACORN, AARP, HealthCare@BarackObama.gov labels on the preprinted signs. Also preprinted lapel tags and stickers. The usual organizers with clipboards, an SEIU Healthcare 15 passenger van, and at least some people in the crowd from way outside the boundaries of the District. They had a drum and spent half an hour before the town hall chanting "Health Care Now". Got themselves worked up into a fine lather, yes they did.

All that said the crowd was about evenly split into "for's" and "against's".

Schiff showed up on the dot at 7:00 p.m. with a panel of 4 "experts" and one moderator. The moderator was a Professor at UCLA Med School--who is also a regular commentator on health issues on the local NBC station. He was smooth and good. All questions would be filtered through him, giving Schiff a chance to think before an answer--and also allowing the moderator to "pass the ball" or the question to a panel member. Think of a good point guard in basketball.

The game plan was this; Schiff delivered a canned talking points speech in favor of the H.R. 3200; asked the audience for indication of "passionately for's" and "passionately against's" and sat down. He'd used up 30 minutes of the 90 minutes alloted for the town hall without taking a single question. The panel then swung into action. They each offered their own expertise: the local head of the Kaiser HMO, a consumer advocate who chases "rogue" health insurers, a lady who runs a company that provides geriatric care, a young lady doctor who talked about the plight of young kids with juvenile diabetes.

Okay the panel has used up 30 more minutes.
A half hour to go, and Schiff is ready to take questions. He's successfully run the political equivalent of the old college basketball "four corners offense" where a team that's a few points ahead tries to kill as much of the clock as they can
without taking a shot.

He did ultimately answer 6 questions--from a crowd of more than 2,000 people. Actually he answered three written questions and took 3 questions from the crowd.

I'll give him props; he had the guts to show up, and a successful strategy for getting through the 90 alloted minutes and then he was "outa here" at jet speed.

I think that that will be the strategy for future "Blue Dog" town halls.

Somehow the assertion that the Town Hall audience was not "pre-screened" sounds a lot like lawyerly parsing. I'm sure David Axelrod emailed his thousands of special NH friends to spread the news, and encouraged them to take their "chances" in the White House selection "lottery."

What amuses me is how obsessively sensitive Team Obama is to every little swipe-- which they feel compelled to gainsay. When the White House spins it as Obama taking on the critics, it usually just means adding snide to defensive.

Birthers: Ignorance is No Excuse

According to Public Policy Polling (PPP), a North Carolina polling firm, only 24% of self-identified Republican voters in the state believe Barack Obama was born in the United States. 47% do not believe that Obama is American born, and 29% of Republicans aren’t sure.

One part of PPP’s data might reassure sentient readers somewhat: 7% of those who voted for John McCain do not believe Hawaii to be a part of the United States. Now perhaps this is just another irrational expression of Obama hatred. But, it may also be older voters who never quite absorbed the news that our 50th state is indeed our 50th state.

Sadly, even if the latter is the case, it doesn’t explain very much. Last November, Obama carried North Carolina by just 14,000 or so votes out of about 4.3 million cast, the second closest state contest in the nation after Missouri. Each candidate received a shade over 49% with minor party candidates picking up the rest. So 7% of the McCain vote is just 3.5% of the total state vote. McCain received about 2.128 million votes. 3.5% of that is–back of the envelope about 74,000 votes.

Ok, now lets look at the official exit polls for the state presidential race. McCain got 95% of the Republican vote, Obama got 4%. McCain also got 95% of the white Republican vote, Obama got 4% of that (probably an almost identical cohort). The GOP identified vote comprised 31% of the whole (Dems 42%, independents 27%).

So McCain got almost all of that 31% of the vote that was self-identified Republican. That comes to about 1.275 million of his 2.128 million total (obviously independents and some Democrats comprised the rest of his vote). So charitably subtract those 74,000 North Carolina McCain voters who claim not to know that Hawaii is an American state (charitably, because let’s assume their view is a sign of ignorance, not malice towards Obama). Now McCain’s GOP voting base is down to 1.2 million GOP voters–of which, according to thePPP poll, 76%, or just over 900,000 Republicans in the state, don’t think the president of the United States is legitimate, or aren’t sure about the matter, needing more proof than the two birth announcements that were placed in Hawaiian newspapers at the time of his birth.1

Reminds me of the grim, old joke about Richard Hofstadter’s Anti-Intellectualism in American Life: That it’s amazing he condensed the subject into one volume.

If you know anything about PPP, you'd know their NC client base is Democratic. You'd be astonished at what a lot of Obama voters around here believe too -- that would be in Volume II. Of course, any card carrying intellectual would have put together a more credible citation than "Eugene," but the statistical concept of "probably an almost identical cohort" was a hoot, so I'll have to give said author a couple points for inventiveness.
