I can't believe there is not a farmer's market in DC already. Michelle could tend a stall there.

Get one with wheels, and Michelle could haul a cart there.

Thanks for the kind words.

PaulL

Palin is really really getting to Ibama. There was the non-stop decrying of the death panels terminology and now it's reminding people that he was supposedly finished when McCain picked her as running mate, but Ibama rose from the dead!

clarice

Once again--like the child at a grownup cocktail party, Obama makes a stupid remark designed to appeal to the crowd--How cool does the notion of supporting farmers' markets sound in Malibu and Marin Country and Martha Vineyard? How likely are those folks to know that we have plenty of them and needn't add to them with one outside the White House --a modern day version of Marie Antoinette's dairy?

PeterUK

Yes Clarice, M would look good dressed in this.

Boatbuilder

One Less Scumbag

From Brad DeLong's Australian: "To go to a private hospital you will either need to pay for it or have private health insurance""

I'm sure the "fair share per capita" folks are gonna just love that one. Brad D. apparently needs to have a face to face with Matt Y:

"One question is why, with income inequality reaching unprecedented levels, we shouldn’t act to redress that inequity in our health care system? "

Then Matt should have a sit down with the Gini Coefficients. Income equality wise, Bosnia & Herzegovina, and Albania are doing better Germany and France.

Jane will cause you pain

I think, but am not sure, if Deval and the 87% democrat legislature cow tow to teddy's wishes there may be some blowback. Even Howie Carr isn't sure it is a done deal. And lots of people think Ted is too far gone to propose the solution, it's his family that is make the pitch.

Porchlight

Get one with wheels, and Michelle could haul a cart there.

How many times can I say "LOL bgates"?

Jane- Dana Bash on CNN just said this letter was drafted July 2, but for some inexplicable reason they are just releasing it (they said so it wouldn't interrupt HC debate).

But why didn't he just go ahead and resign July 2? Or June 2? The 5 months would be halfway over by now, and no HC vote missed.

Patrick R. Sullivan

Ann Coulter has a great column up now which pretty much gets everything right:

Tiny little France and Germany have more competition among health insurers than the U.S. does right now. Amazingly, both of these socialist countries have less state regulation of health insurance than we do, and you can buy health insurance across regional lines -- unlike in the U.S., where a federal law allows states to ban interstate commerce in health insurance.

U.S. health insurance companies are often imperious, unresponsive consumer hellholes because they're a partial monopoly, protected from competition by government regulation. In some states, one big insurer will control 80 percent of the market. (Guess which party these big insurance companies favor? Big companies love big government.)

....You could fix 90 percent of the problems with health insurance by ending the federal law allowing states to ban health insurance sales across state lines. ....

Government-provided health care isn't a competitor; it's a monopoly product paid for by the taxpayer. Consumers may be able to "choose" whether they take the service -- at least at first -- but every single one of us will be forced to buy it, under penalty of prison for tax evasion. It's like a new cable plan with a "yes" box, but no "no" box.

Obama himself compared national health care to the post office -- immediately conjuring images of a highly efficient and consumer-friendly work force -- which, like so many consumer-friendly shops, is closed by 2 p.m. on Saturdays, all Sundays and every conceivable holiday.

....(4) National health care will give Americans "basic consumer protections that will finally hold insurance companies accountable" -- as Barack Obama claimed in his op/ed in the Times.

You want to protect consumers? Do it the same way we protect consumers of dry cleaning, hamburgers and electricians: Give them the power to tell their insurance companies, "I'm taking my business elsewhere."

Highly recommended, and quite appropriate following by a few days, the passing of Rose Friedman RIP.

Boatbuilder

Narciso--you said it (again). Never mind the "wee-weed" idiocy; the idea that the PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES would publicly comment about how he pushed back the threat presented by his defeated opponent's V.P. nominee speaks volumes about what an insecure man he really is.

I have always had problems with the man, but I thought many of our regulars were too hard on him. I was wrong. He's far worse than I could have imagined him to be, even at my most cynical.

JM Hanes

Clarice:

"a modern day version of Marie Antoinette's dairy"

Just so!

PUK:

She can have a dress made to match the new curtains. Then she can stroll through the Potemkin farmers' market and create a run on drapery if the veggie thing doesn't pan out.

Will this Farmers Market carry arugula? Cuz you know the price of arugula is just out of sight these days...

Sara (Pal2Pal)

"One question is why, with income inequality reaching unprecedented levels, we shouldn’t act to redress that inequity in our health care system? "

So like with taxes, I should pay more so Brad doesn't have to pay at all.

"Marie Antoinette's dairy"

Can any of you ladies be persuaded to write "Michelle's Diary" ?

Sara (Pal2Pal)

I thought we elected a President and CofC, not Farmer John and his wife. Oh well, give Michelle an excuse to wear her denim short shorts a few more times.

Michelle's Diary - Couture of Corruption or Corruption of Couture?

JMH. It needs someone with a sense of humour.

Nice one. Or it could be Michelle's Dress Tips

Jane, is there a Raoul Kennedy waiting somewhere?

Fresh Air

It's really too bad Mary Jo Kopechne didn't get a chance to experience government-run health care before she drowned in Ted Kennedy's car.

JM Hanes

PUK: I'd vote for Ann. She could write captions for her photo collection and double the funny.

JM Hanes

MayBee:

"But why didn't he just go ahead and resign July 2?"

He doesn't want to give up his seat, or the ghost, till he's shoehorned another Kennedy into it. The available crop will need the leg up that would come with an interim appointment and vaguely incumbent status. Otherwise, I doubt any of them would have a prayer in a special election, especially without Teddy on the stump.

PeterUK

"It's really too bad Mary Jo Kopechne didn't get a chance to experience government-run health care before she drowned in Ted Kennedy's car."

Or her children and grand children. It was her birthday on July 26th,she was born in 1940.

Why is the DNC doing anything with a whitehouse e-mail address ?

Political activity in the White House is prohibited by the Hatch Act.
That’s why the DNC (or RNC) does that sort of activity off the premises.

There is a big problem here if the DNC got anything that came in on the flag email line.

These federal and D.C. employees may not-

* use official authority or influence to interfere with an election
* solicit or discourage political activity of anyone with business before their agency
* solicit or receive political contributions (may be done in certain limited situations by federal labor or other employee organizations)
* be candidates for public office in partisan elections

In some archieve in France there still exists one of these books:

""The valet of the wardrobe on duty presented every morning a large book to the first femme de chambre, containing patterns of the gowns, full dresses, undresses, etc. Every pattern was marked, to show to which sort it belonged. The first femme de chambre presented this book to the Queen on her awaking, with a pincushion; her Majesty stuck pins in those articles which she chose for the day,--one for the dress, one for the afternoon-undress, and one for the full evening dress for card or supper parties in the private apartments. The book was then taken back to the wardrobe, and all that was wanted for the day was soon after brought in in large taffety wrappers. The wardrobe woman, who had the care of the linen, in her turn brought in a covered basket containing two or three chemises and handkerchiefs. The morning basket was called pret du jour. In the evening she brought in one containing the nightgown and nightcap, and the stockings for the next morning; this basket was called pret de la nuit. They were in the department of the lady of honour, the tirewoman having nothing to do with the linen. Nothing was put in order or taken care of by the Queen's women. As soon as the toilet was over, the valets and porter belonging to the wardrobe were called in, and they carried all away in a heap, in the taffety wrappers, to the tirewoman's wardrobe, where all were folded up again, hung up, examined, and cleaned with so much regularity and care that even the cast-off clothes scarcely looked as if they had been worn. The tirewoman's wardrobe consisted of three large rooms surrounded with closets, some furnished with drawers and others with shelves; there were also large tables in each of these rooms, on which the gowns and dresses were spread out and folded up.""

Mme Campan on Marie Antoinette

MA really was a fashion icon. What she wore or how she styled her hair one day, was slavishly copied by the women of the Court (at Versailles) the next. For the Michelle Diaries, I think I'd start out with MO receiving her "clothing sample" book, marking a page with a dressmaker's pin, being photographed in her "outfit" and then every woman in Washington DC immediately showing up the next day wearing a pair crotch-hugging shorts.

(Singing little song to myself, "Hi Ho, Hi Ho, I'm mongering evil everywhere I go, Hi Ho, Hi Ho....)

PaulL

I think Obama was misquoted and he really said "There is something about August going into September where everybody in Washington gets all doodoo-ed up."

DebinNC

Dingell and Waxman have a bill moving along which is anti-small farmers and local farmers markets.

And Urban Dictionary has two meanings for
"wee wee" - both nouns: childish word for urinate and very tiny penis.

AST

I can't believe that this much evasiveness and hiding the ball could be accidental. It's not the protesters who are being dishonest; it's the proponents of this "reform" that they won't finalize and lay out for study.

A word to the wise legislator: Never vote for anything that has to be passed immediately, because if you don't have time to understand it and make it clear, we don't have time for you in office.

Amazing. What bill is Zero referring to. Surely not the one that is on the web, HR3200 which is 1007 pages since the things he claims are not in there are in that bill. I would love to read the one he is referring to.

As it stands, the only thing to protest is the one that is out there on display and it does not match his claims at all. In fact Sarah Palin is a lot closer to what is in that bill than Zero is.

Extraneus

More voters passing up the doggie treats, Sara? Tsk, tsk.

I can't get over Barack's "bearing false witness" shite. He should worry about turning into a pillar of salt if he keeps that up.

He is also so damn clueless, it constantly amazes me that 52 (or 53 depending who is making the statement) of the folks voted for him. I try not to gloat, because in the end we are all screwed by the "wee wee man".

Can we get some/more "true" constitutional scholars to address to whole viability of what the O and the Dems are trying to put over on the majority of folks who are opposed to the Health Care concept du jour.

I don't think he intends to resign. I think the rules are he wants the legislature to reverse the special election rule he fought for when Romney was Governor, (It was Kennedy's idea). Then when he dies Deval will appoint someone who promises, in exchange for the appointment, not to run in the election so his wife can take the seat.

He's a thug.

Was in my Optometrists office today for a consultation. They are friends of ours. Anyway, the Husband comes in, who manages the office, and says they now have another website to go to to get pre verification and verification for Medicare. Instead of two, now there's three seperate steps to see a medicare patient, and maybe get paid. So much for Govt streamlining the system.

The Michelle Antoinette Obama Diaries: Couture of Corruption

My experiences in the White House have made me far more aware of my 'blackness' than ever before... I have found that in the public eye, no matter how liberal and open-minded some of my adoring white fans and limited staff of 28 try to be toward me, I sometimes feel like a visitor in DC; as if I really don't belong. Regardless of the circumstances underwhich I interact with whites, it often seems as if, to them, I will always be black first and a gorgeous international fashion icon second.

Becoming First Lady of the United States is destroying my authentic racial self-hood and further integration and/or assimilation into a white cultural and social structure that will only allow me to remain on the periphery of society; never becoming a full participant. I'll bet Angelina Jolie will make the cover of Vogue more times than I will!

Its like a total bummer, man. Barack said we'd all have to make sacrifices, but this Washington gig is the pits. Geez, who'd have thought I'd be forced to endure the racist ignominy of living in a crib called the "White House" for eight years?

My wife and I went out to eat today. I had my eyes dialated, and couldn't see shit, but I could hear the conversation at the table behind us. Older fellows, one from Local, one apparently from KC, talking politics. There was the usual division over Sarah Palin. I don't think the big city types get her, or something, I'm still not sure exactly what the problem is. But, anyway, conversation turned to Cash for Clunkers. Both of them hated that. The one guy was an insurance agent, and he claimed that the Cash for Clunkers has pretty much dried up the used car market of anything much under $8,000, which sounds about right from what I've seen on local lots. So, what they've done, is manage to take good, cheap used cars off the market, and hurt the low income folks who could've used those cars. Add on top that the dealers STILL haven't been paid, and are sitting on literally hundreds of thousands, and in some cases over a million dollars of Clunkers they've been bankrolling for the govt for over a month. Take dealers that weren't doing that well already, and add a months interest on a million bucks plus, and that isn't going to help much.

But why didn't he just go ahead and resign July 2? Or June 2? The 5 months would be halfway over by now, and no HC vote missed.

MayBee, I lost a girlfriend to a GBM some years ago, so I've sat through this. It's peculiar, because you know the general trend is downhill, but there are good days, good weeks, that last long enough you think maybe this is going to be the one in a thousand major remission... and the next day they're saying they're three years old and their birthday is coming.

I'm guessing Teddy had a good period around the first of july, was putting his affairs in order, and that this is a sign that they don't think he has many good days ahead.

Charlie (Colorado)

Clarice, some idiot is having a protest at Whole Foods tomorrow in DC (NY and Atlanta) because the CEO does not support Obama care.

They will pass something declared Obamacare, no matter how shallow and worthless. Just hope it is not very expensive, as we really can not afford it.

Then the prancing and dancing and declaring victory ( A la Nixon ) will immediately follow.
