"but a trip to Afghanistan" what?

patch

If the IOC awards the 2016 Olympics to Chicago, there should be a proviso that there will be a permanent grand jury empaneled to investigate the corruption.

Anyone for an over number of 50? 100? 250?

gmax

TM

You get run over by the Obama bus in mid sentence?

gmax

Rio De Janeiro will get the OLY spectacle. Never been one held in America de Sur and that is one major reason. The other is Brazil is willing to fling money at the games, and the number I heard if true is nuts. Peter Uberoth would not be able to make the games profitable with those kinds of numbers upfront.

Extraneus

"...would be so silly a gesture that the photo op would haunt him all the way to 2012 as the country descends into chaos after he rejects McCrystal's request and abandons them to the Talleybòn"?

Jane

Pass a law saying no bail-outs for Chicago. Let them get a billion bucks in debt by themselves. No federal money at all. It will all go in Valerie Jarret's pocket anyway.

JM Hanes

When words fail our dear leader, it's just

Original MikeS

Yes, and if Sarah ever goes to Afghanistan

daddy

I think Bill Kristol's off on this one.

I think Obama's in Copenhagen so he can check out the general territory for when he comes back from Afghanistan to pick up his Nobel Prize.

I suppose he'd take 1 for Literature--
"Dreams of my Neighbor (hat-tip whomever),

or for Medicine--- "Universal Health Care for illegals"

but I think he's really dead set on doing the whole Carter thing and joining the ghost of dead terrorist Yasser Arafat up on the Podium for The Peace Prize.

This way he'd get to wear a really snazzy Tuxedo at the Awards Ceremony (I'd recommend the one Tom Hank's wore in BIG), and Michelle would get to try on some wooden shoes from nearby Holland which would finally scare the Be-jesus out of her fashion rival, Mrs Sarkozy.

Jane

Bishop,

The LUN is something you will like a lot.

MDr

Dear Leader has been so battered by defeat after defeat on the domestic and international fronts, he needed a win. He's going to Copehagen. Maybe not today, but some day, soon, it will be revealed that ObamaOne, found out before his announced trip, that Chicago had the "win" in the bag.

Captain Hate

Michelle would get to try on some wooden shoes from nearby Holland which would finally scare the Be-jesus out of her fashion rival, Mrs Sarkozy.

Timberrrrrr. That's all we need for Worff to be lurching down the avenue sounding like a syncopated donkey.

Cassandra

You know, I wish I could believe Obama realizes this war is important enough to merit even an empty gesture or the effort it takes to give the appearance of paying attention.

I would so love to be wrong about this. I'd gladly eat my hat if I had one. I'll even buy a hat, then eat it.

Gregory Koster

Daddy, the Prize will be for physics, for the math used in the health care plan. As a secondary matter, said math explains how The Once is able to see his image in the mirror, despite the mirror's heavy crop of lip prints...

Can we persuade TM to finish his paragraph? Yes we

bishop

Thanks Jane, that February pic, is what she did to the public option and the death panels, righy You know I don't think he can pull off this stunt, like he did in Baghdad
and even Langley sometime back, the bloom is off the rose, he can't posture that way again. IMO

daddy

Thinking about the Tom Hank's character in the movie "BIG" made me think about the parallels with Obama. An easy parody could be made of the 2.
Because of some carnival flim-flam game (aka The MSM) a naive, immature and basically uneducated kid suddenly gets transported into the Biggest job in the world, or simply Big, as Hank's character.

"You mean I just stand here and read off this TV screen and turn my head back and forth? Cool!"

From then on it's simply playing and playing, and running off to the Toy Stores or Ball Games or Letterman or Copenhagen for Olympic chats, and trying out all the window up and down switches on Limousines and Air Force 1.

"Well Okay, I'll go to Afghanistan, Rahm, but you've got to promise me that I get to go to Copenhagen first---isn't that where they make good ice cream?"

Thankfully Hank's character eventually grew up and realized he wasn't ready for being BIG.

Extraneus

I liked the Rush link at the Surber link.

"The left will tell us who they're afraid of."

How can anyone disagree with that?

daddy

Cassandra you're being a Cassandra.

RichatUF

I knew that the Olympics topic came up before::

Oh and for anyone interested in another corruption vector to explore, it seems that Valerie Jarrett, from her perch as Senior Advisor to the President, is leading the Administration's efforts to get the 2016 games in Chicago.

I have no doubt that over $100 million will change hands and that the FBI will be no where to be found when the depth of the corruption is revealed.

Posted by: RichatUF | May 12, 2009 at 10:13 PM

But I can't seem to find another reference? I also think it came up last year when someone started to dig around Jarrett?

Any suggestions?

daddy

Anybody know if Biden's going along? I'd hate for him to have to dine with Karzai again---he might get up and walk out after desert again.

willem

Aye Hatey.. I love it!!

"... Worff ... lurching down the avenue sounding like a syncopated donkey."

Yo, BHO. Mule school at LUN.

Extraneus

Couldn't that be a case of too much gravitas, daddy? One should be somewhat circumspect about these things, after all.

willem

What I think I remember: Jarrett is Vernon Jordan's niece and a major player at CBOT or affilliate. Also was the #1 working for Paul Volker in the UN/Annan Food for Oil fraud "investigation" that focused on BNP Parabas which recall was the settlements bank for Saddam's UN FFO programme. This gets interesting as Auchi apparently had a chunky interest in BNP Parabas. Auchi funded Rezko, which returns us to Chicago, the birth of the derivatives market and CBOT, commodities and related entities and personalities. Not a very big circle. Are losses the only thing laundered in Chicago?

Rick Ballard

Willem,

You're heading back towards the Power Corporation - Maurice Strong, the Desmarais family and Chirac. Boutros Boutros Ghali giving corruption lessons to Kof Annan in French.

It's an interesting side track that might provide insight into Sarkozy's willingness to shred His Nullity.

Bill in AZ

Rich,
Glenn Beck had some kind of teaser on Jarrett. Seeing how Beck operates lately, he knows what the scoop is, but is giving MSM another chance to redeem themselves report obfuscate ignore it. Somewhere I read/heard that Jarrett's company owns some of the property that would be used for the Olympics.

Captain Hate

Yo, BHO. Mule school at LUN.

Nice catch, willem!!

"The left will tell us who they're afraid of."

How can anyone disagree with that?

I can't but maybe I have to start turning off the radio because the messenger is driving me up the effing wall. I'm listening in my car today when he starts talking about Palin's new book. Of course he starts talking about the books he previously wrote and I'm thinking "STFU Rush, this isn't about you". Then he starts talking about how he warned about the squish Repukes being swayed against Palin and I'm thinking "STFU you formerly fat POS, this isn't about you". Then he stated the above line and reminded us how he's always preached that and I thought "STFU and OD on oxycontin, you egomaniacal dickwhistle; this isn't about you." Fortunately I reached my destination at that point.

Thomas Collins

"but a trip to Afghanistan might be more pleasant for Obama than another attempt by Obama to "yes, we can" Congress on ObamaCare."

That's my entry for the "fill in the rest of TM's post" contest.

And TM, is the cash award greater than Iowahawk's cash award for art?

Cecil Turner

but a trip to Afghanistan . . .

. . . would be fun.

. . . might be a nice way to break the news to McChrystal.

. . . exceeds the classification level of JOM.

Captain Hate

Ok, I'll play TC:

"but a trip to Afghanistan would at least allow him to pretend to not be considering voting "Present" on the decision to send more troops."

Extraneus

Still, just think of it. The One Smiling Visage on the big screen at the XXXI Olympiad, grateful citizens cheering in the stands at the opening ceremony. A little greyer, and soon to be a real Citizen of the World, basking in the glory of his adopted home-town crowd.

There's no way he could resist the temptation of bribing whoever needs to be bribed to keep this fantasy alive.

Captain Hate

There's no way he could resist the temptation of bribing whoever needs to be bribed to keep this fantasy alive.

And people were upset that the stimulus funds were going unspent....

RichatUF

willem-

Didn't know that the OFF "investigation" eventually looped back to her? I thought that it had more to do with her families connections to the Ayers family and her working in the planning department in Chicago? Someone, somewhere, sometime ago (and my googlefu seems to be failing as bad as my memory tonight) had mentioned that she was deeply involved in a private real estate venture while working for Chicago city government

clarice

The IOC is his sort of outfit--buyable and totally corrupt.

RichatUF

Thanks Bill.

clarice

Bill Whipple (PJTV) had a great spot the other day in which he argues that Breitbart's real target is the media--and there's a lot to say for it. He beats them to the story and when the administration is finally forced to get rid of the offender, the media is stuck trying to explain to its readers what this is all about, having refusing to publish a word about it beforehand.

Captain Hate

Mark Levin is on fire tonight *and* he's only talking about the issues, not himself. Too bad he's not on from noon to three. I can't listen to Prager; he's as big a squish as Huge Douche.

Melinda Romanoff

clarice-

I believe Juan Antonio Samaranch, Franco's little friend, was the largest real estate holder, tax free, of course, of the entire IOC.

The shenanigans, here in Chicago, started right before they made the bid, a bunch of CHA projects suddenly dropped, and the funding "disappeared". I can't wait for The Great, Seven Year, Construction Project to begin. All those new funds to direct.

Bah.

Extraneus

Yeah, sorry Rush has that effect on you, Captain. I can imagine how he could grate. For some reason, it just amuses me when he does that. I like Levin, too, and had him on for a while earlier, but I can hardly listen to Hannity for five minutes before I have to go to the sports station.

Like somebody said about Beck, he's effective, and all these guys are effective. May they all prosper.

Melinda Romanoff

willem-

She was a member of the board of the Chicago Stock Exchange. The CME and CBOT would have wanted former members of Congress and Cabinet officials, and still do. The Stock Exchange doesn't pull that much weight, pay for order flow and all those antics sorta killed their growth opportunities, for now.

clarice

From Wikipedia:
"what had used to be a strictly-amateur competition, while others began accusing the IOC of corruption.

Also during his tenure as IOC president, Samaranch insisted that he be addressed with the title of "Excellency", a title used for heads of state. In addition, when he traveled to conduct Olympic business, he would insist on a chauffeured limousine as well as a presidential suite in the finest hotel of whatever city he visited. The IOC put an annual rental (at a cost of US$500,000 per year) at a presidential suite for his stays in Lausanne, Switzerland, where the IOC headquarters are located.[4]

[edit] Corruption
Besides his lavish accommodations, he was increasingly criticized for the judging and doping scandals and rampant corruption that occurred under his watch. A closed-door inquiry later expelled several IOC members for accepting bribes but cleared Samaranch of wrongdoing. Samaranch declared that the IOC's worst crisis was over but a group of former Olympic athletes, led by Mark Tewksbury, continued to push for his removal. There were allegations of vote buying in Salt Lake City, Utah's successful bid for the 2002 Winter Olympics. The scandal exposed runaway corruption within the IOC.

[edit] Succession
In 2001, Samaranch did not apply for the presidency again. He was succeeded by Jacques Rogge. He then became Honorary President for Life of the International Olympic Committee.

He lobbied for Madrid's 2012 bid, which became one of the shortlisted 5 candidates, but it was eliminated in the third round of voting."

Janet

((Like somebody said about Beck, he's effective, and all these guys are effective. May they all prosper.))

Amen!

Melinda Romanoff

Oh, and another link-o-rama from FronPage on Valerie Jarrett LUN.

Which I found trying to look up her late father-in-law's articles on The New Party, which I do seem to recall at the time. He was a big fan.

PD

Ed Rendell just said on Hannity, about Obama: "He's a Chicagoan through and through."

Melinda Romanoff

Shocker! The uber liberal Boston Globe:

Grim proving ground for Obama's housing policy

LUN

clarice

Ot's from June 2008,Jane.

Jane

Hmmm it's a story from June 2008. Breitbart headlining now. I wonder why.

clarice

"Among those tied to Obama politically, personally, or professionally are:

Valerie Jarrett, a senior adviser to Obama's presidential campaign and a member of his finance committee. Jarrett is the chief executive of Habitat Co., which managed Grove Parc Plaza from 2001 until this winter and co-managed an even larger subsidized complex in Chicago that was seized by the federal government in 2006, after city inspectors found widespread problems.
"

That's from the article--let's hope it's a clue that Breitbart is moving on to Jarrett.

RichatUF

It'll be whipped into shape for the Chicago Olympic Village in no time. I could even see Barack and Michelle slapping some paint on the walls.

bishop

Hannity is a bit johnny one note sometimes,
I've made the comparison to the Spanish talk stations. Perez Roura, the old standard
lion of the exile community, is unsubtle and
a touch stentorian. Savage I really can't stand for more than a few minutes, at atime.
Levin I haven't heard in a while' Phil Hendrie used to me amusing, but he's drunk
deep of the Obama koolaid,

Braveheart Breitbart.

I smell a housing expose that targets Valerie Jarret and touches Obama.

Melinda Romanoff

Rich-

They better start with the foundation, and then move directly to the roof, otherwise that paint will work like whitewash (the lime kind, not political).

The place looks ready to fall in. And where DID those millions of tax dollars go?

Oh, look! Kittens....

Wastes Annenburg money and the children suffer, puts public money in his friends' pockets and the tenants suffer..

We're trickling through the same ghetto gutter, clarice.

Captain Hate

Yeah, sorry Rush has that effect on you, Captain. I can imagine how he could grate.

Eh, it's not like he has to convince me of anything that I don't already believe, Ext; I pretty much listen to him only because things might be breaking at the time that I'd like to know about. Otherwise I find out all I need to know here and elsewhere on the innertubez. I like Levin because he cuts to the chase without setting up an eternal preamble; he probably comes the closest to what I'd do if I had a show, including quickly dispatching the numbnuts that call in.

clarice

Yes, we are, Kim. (I know you're a master of disguise, but I', hard to fool.)

Jane

Yeah - and the fact that she owns the property where the Olympics will be built.

Melinda Romanoff

I don't think they had tenants for more than a few months at Parc Grove.

(she who will not be named...)

sbw

Well, Obama has to have something to do after he gets bounced out of office in 2012.

daddy

I want the prize to be a Road Trip with Captain Hate driving during The Rush Limbaugh Show. Man, that'd be better fireworks than 4th of July:)

clarice

Yeah. Every 9/11 "Service Day" between now and 2016.

Melinda Romanoff

Actually, I think the City took it from the Feds for a dollar. There's a bit of history here. Start with this LUN, while I go dig up the South Side stuff.

RichatUF

Think of the caving in roof as improving the view.

Imagination people.

Rick Ballard

SBW,

What would you say the odds are that this is a death cage match between RW and His Nullity? She couldn't use the room full of oppo research binders during the campaign (the "racist" charge was biting) but there's no reason not to funnel them to Breitbart now, is there? Bubba's blather about the VRWC botwithstanding.

I wouldn't put the odds above 50/50 but I have my fingers crossed.

RichatUF

Rick-

That brings a tear to my eye.

willem

Thanks for the correction, Melinda. Am reasonably certain however that when Volker was hand picked to be one the three "IG" for Annan's OFF investigation that Volker hired Jarrett as his lead associate/assistant. .... been googling and things seem scrubbed.

Did find this: "Craig represented United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan during the Volker Commission's investigations in 2004 into the scandals involving the oil-for-food programme."

It's a small small world at LUN.

clarice

Interesting thought, Rick. He did say people were coming forward with information now that he's proved he can get a story heard.

daddy

Bishop,

Quick local stuff. Concerning Begich hiding info to raise Union pay 100 million just before skipping town from Mayor to Senator. ADN is burying the story but it's still hot on Talk Radio. The board members who voted (save 1 Begich buddy) are saying they never got the financial bad news. Begich is very carefully saying he "gave them all the information he legally had to provide to them." He released a letter showing that the Wall Street Journal had done a story at the time about how well the City was doing at the time and how it was fiscally solvent and run well...but now, after some Talk Radio sleuthing, it turns out that the guy who gave the WSJ that untrue stuff to print was (wait for it) Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich.

Hope still lives out here, but only just. So far the Media has completely squelched the story in Begich's favor, so no independent prosecutor or investigator has yet to be appointed.

Apologies for interrupting the thread.

Cassandra please post more often.

Bad left the hospital today shortly after noon. The tests have come back, medications altered, etc etc etc, and the doctors feel like they have things under control.

But this is a big cause for joy.

Let me be the first to predict that Rio will get the 2016 Olympic Games.

Based on the European view of Obama, they will give it to Rio. Obama seems to go out of his way to piss of Gordon Brown and, more importantly, Nicolas Sarkozy with his childish stunts at the UN, etc. This is without even mentioning the Poles, and the Czechs.

Revenge is a dish best served cold.

Rick Ballard

Clarice,

ACORN must be destroyed in order for RW to have a shot in '12. '16 is just too late - all the straw will have rotted off her broom by then. I sure hope she's trying - there's just nothing quite like scorpions in a bottle. I suppose I ought to read up on The Swimmer's challenge of Carter in '79. I seem to remember him coming close but then getting knocked out by Carter's use of oppo (with a little help from some MSM buddies, if memory serves). May the venom be strong for both of them.

Fresh Air

Rick--

My guess is Ratched heads off to run Wellesley or hops into the N.Y. governor's race. Just can't see a primary challenge to Zero unless he has a nervous breakdown...which I don't completely discount. Natch.

Fresh Air

OT--

Cheery news: the banking industry is insolvent.

This will definitely help us get the Olympics somehow.

Gregory Koster

Rick, a good short account is Theodore White's last Making of the President books AMERICA IN SEARCH OF ITSELF. Briefly: Swimmer started badly with the Roger Mudd interview, and started getting stomped by the Bumpkin. The press was more or less neutral, badly torn at the sight of Democrats fighting each other to the advantage of Reagan. Then about February, just when Swimmer was about to pack it in, the voters slapped themselves and said, Do we want four more years of Jimmy Bumpkin? So they rolled over to Swimmer, who couldn't back out when he started winning. Neither got a decisive advantage in primary delegates, but Jimmy Bumpkin got out the presidential blackjack, and spent pork like crazy (thereby causing a rush of the Gadarene swine), and won the nomination.

Fresh Air, events will dictate a primary challenge. Let Iran fire a nuke this year or next, and The Once is cooked. That'll be soon enough for the "rally around the Prez" effect to go away. But nukes going off is going to show the hollowness of The Once in a way that even Evan Thomas couldn't cover up.

Soylent Red

Zero's not going to Afghanistan. To do so would

a. force him to confront the glaring need for more troops, and knowing that need, actually do his own homework and make a decision;

b. run the risk of being photographed covered in body armor from head to toe while being escorted by an unarmored Gen McChrystal - a photo that would aptly draw the distinction between the two men.

c. not do anything to satiate his base, who he cannot afford to lose.

Now, not being able to always predict what this guy does, I will hedge my bet by saying this: if Obama goes to AFG, the sole purpose will be to say that he had personally reviewed the situation and determined that it was beyond repair, so we're bugging out.

Of course Republicans will howl, but how will we know since StateRunMedia will never dig any deeper than what Zero says.

WRT Michelle and her Wooden Shoes...Between the bondage belt and the wooden shoes, I can only imagine some cheerful soul, while watching the promenade, humming to himself, "Here comes the king, here comes the big number one..."

WRT Bad's recovery...that's the best news I've heard all week.

JM Hanes

Jane:

"Hmmm it's a story from June 2008. Breitbart headlining now. I wonder why."

Probably because it's virtually the only story ever written up in the MSM that made the results of Obama's community organizing clear. I remember being astonished when it came out, thinking that the Boston Globe, of all papers, had decided to take off the kid campaign gloves. I couldn't believe it was even accompanied by an appropriately depressing video. Unfortunately, with the possible exception of Ryan Lizza's profile, it turned out to be pretty much both the first and the last expose of Campaign '08.

If Breitbart is pulling it out the closet, perhaps it's foundational to the next story in the full court press he seems to be conducting. If so, the fact that the Globe is a NY Times owned outfit and deep sixed the real estate story (shades of the ACORN save) seems like an angle Breitbart might be inclined to pursue.

Valerie Jarrett served on the Chicago Olympic committee before she jumped ship for the White House, BTW.

I've been assuming Obama wouldn't go to Copenhagen if he weren't sure of the outcome, but it occurred to me that with Lula da Silva going all out, he could conceivably have been starting to worry that Chicago didn't have it in the bag. That still seems unlikely, but given how thoroughly Obama is associated with Chicago, losing one for the homeboys could be a PR debacle whether he showed up or not. Better to shift a lot of manufactured blame having made the try, than be tarred for not bothering to mount the charm campaign which everybody knows is a game changer.

I don't sense a whole lot of national excitement about capturing the Olympic banner, and I can see Obama turning a Brazilian win into a world historic international suck up in the name of Lula "I love this guy!" da Silva and the "developing" world.

Obviously I am too since I've made my opinion on the worship of the golden calf of shamateur athletics clear in combination with the financial nightmare that others have illustrated. Do they have any idea what the opinion of Reporting-for-Doody is outside of their echo chamber?
