To whom can America turn in these troubled times, as Hope and Change appear to be foundering? We can turn to Obama for answers!
Having explained to us that Fox News cannot be trusted, Obama has taken the additional and important step of endorsing certain pundits, opinion leaders, and "journalists" as President Approved. Who is on the honor roll:
Here's a curious turn in the White House vs. Fox News fight.
On Monday, MSNBC's Keith Olbermann and Rachel Maddow were among several people who attended an off-the-record briefing with Pres. Obama at the White House. Sources tell us other attendees at the two-and-a-half hour chat included Eugene Robinson of the Washington Post, Maureen Dowd of the New York Times, Gwen Ifill of PBS and Gloria Borger of CNN. Perhaps not surprisingly, no one from Fox News was in the room.
...Update: The White House has sent TVNewser the complete list of those who attended the off-the-record briefing Monday: Eugene Robinson, E.J. Dionne, Ron Brownstein, John Dickerson, Rachel Maddow, Frank Rich, Jerry Seib, Maureen Dowd, Keith Olbermann, Bob Herbert, Gloria Borger, and Gwen Ifill. Several members of the staff also attended.
There you have it. Now we know where to look for President Approved Punditry.
It must have been exciting for Ron Brownstein to meet heavy journalistic talents like Maddow and Olbermann.
Elliott: "They still aren't clear on "Episcopal" and "Episcopalian," leading to such cacophonies as "the Episcopalian Church" and "Episcopalian priests."
Uh oh. More proof of my cacophony. And holy Rudyard Kipling, Batman, I'm one of "They!"
Elliott, what is the proper way to refer to the Episcopal organization?

I just finished a post describing the July Pew poll findings on Fox News. The American public gives Fox an average rating for a news organization (55 percent favorable, 25 percent unfavorable).
Fox got a better favorable rating than MSNBC (48-19) and a way better rating than the New York Times (29-17). So Obama brought in two from MSNBC and three from the NYT.

It sort of shows how differently our minds work. You write, I talk. You analyze issues, I commit snark. You are all about the law and I'm all about the facts. I tell people I don't know anything about the law, and there is a lot of truth in that statement - but I can depose someone to within an inch of their lives.

Cunning doesn't equal intelligence. This is now my all time favorite. This really hits the truth about Obama. It is now time to hold the elite media responsible for their ignorance in getting him elected. Time for tea parties against the main stream media. They hold us in comtempt as the ignorant unwashed mass, while ignoring our economy tanking, the world sticking their fingers in our eyes, the great take over of our lives. Barney Frank just said, not just bail out recipients, but all Americans should have their pay cut! Who is Barney Frank to tell anyone how much they can make. He is responsible for the real estate collaspe, and is not held responsible by any investigative reporter. Time to TAKE ON THE MEDIA. It's ok, the great one is taking on Fox. He may have started something.

The left lied and media died. Gwen Ifill, who attended the meeting, moderated the only vice presidential debate between Palin and Biden over Republican objections after she failed to disclose that she was publishing a favorable book about Obama. The left said she's independent and called the objections to her moderating "paranoia". "Media" according to the Obama administration is a cuddly puppy dog that will take orders from the White House. Fox won't do that, which is why Obama hates Fox.

Rich,
I agree that Romer was presaging a double dip. Remember the Fed "stress tests"? This fellow does. I know Prince Obamlet has been whining about banks not lending enough but I'm not at all sure that that they can increase lending in the face of increasing losses. Especially not with Uncle Ben's Bambibuck printer turned off (for the moment) and Turbo Timmy scheduled to hit the bond market with $100 billion per month in additional supply over the next year.
It appears that Barro's hypothesis regarding crowding out is going to get a real test.

Glasater, thanks for the link to the rejected Spengler article. The ASIA TIMES was right to reject this hunk of junk. I'm a big Spengler fan, so this zaniness was a big disappointment. My objection? I'm told that the laity should refrain from psychological diagnoses from a distance, yet Spengler jumps right in, even admitting that the DSM-IV is more a manual for insurance reimbursement than real understanding, but banging away with his hammer on that land mine---with the usual results. All during Geo. W's administration, leftist quacks "diagnosed" him with all sorts of bunk, e.g sublimated quarrels with the old man being the cause of invading Iraq. Such quackeries are now forgotten, but in their day they deluded many otherwise monsters whose behavior could have been explained by a diagnosis of rabies. It's worth noting that the American Psychiatric Association's members generally lean left. Once Spenglerian "instant remote diagnoses" become fashionable, it will be the Right that suffers. Remember the Amodio study? This heaping cartload of rubbish would have been a fine pretext for concluding that the average JOMer was too dumb to deserve any health care except the public option.
Furhter, the amateur diagnoses that rely on writings are unreliable. You may conclude the DREAMS FROM MY FATHER proves The Once is ready for the loony bin. Then you find out that Ayers wrote it? What does this do to your "diagnosis"? What it does should be studied by Navy Seals as they work on demolition.
To shoot even closer to home: how many JOMers would be happy with a Spenglerian "analysis" based on their comments here? Thought so.
It is one thing to object to The Once and howl that he's a public menace. I agree with such a conclusion and can point to many actions he's taken (or not taken) to back up my assertions. But for God's sake, give Sigmund, Carl and all such quacks a heave overboard, preferably tied to a depth charge. The Soviets used psychiatry as part of political persecution, and the professionals smiled and smiled, getting fat in the process, knowing dam well the consequences of being honest. It will happen to the Right in this nation far more readily than to the Left.
This violation of the Nuclear Test Ban Treaty was brought to you by The Anti-Rolo League.

GK--
I don't think the terminology or exact diagnosis is what's important here. The point is the guy exhibits multiple symptoms of serious mental illness. Goldman knits together the probable causes quite nicely, and until we get a full accounting by some serious reporters who can interview some people closer to him (if there in fact are any), this is the best we are going to do.
That said, I think he's absolutely somewhere between an NPD and a psychopath. We must always remember that he will do NOTHING in good faith; everything is in furtherance of himself and what he must do to nurture his self-image. If he has to kill the country in the process, he's okay with that.
I am not.

In re: the double dip. Japan and Europe will tip back in before us because the Administration has caused another oil shock-weak dollar, no drilling, tax increases on oil companies, and all that "free money" sloshing around looking for a home.
Not really surprised that the Obama Administration has basically wasted its first year and a trillion dollars looking for some solutions. Romer, Summers, and Geithner will be spending more time with the family soon.
Also, the BLS put its preliminary benchmark revision up and it is coming in at -824k or -.6. I should probably drink some coffee and read the report a bit closer, but is that only for March 09 or is that a cummulative total for 09. If that were the case doesn't that put the unemployment rate at 10.4% already and pushing 11% in Feburary once the final numbers are published?

I hesitate to project the BLS revision. It would certainly change the March 09 reported rate of 8.5% to 9.1% but I just don't know whether that .6% increase can be applied today. I do know that the .1 reduction in hours worked for September has a negative impact equivalent to the loss of an additional 420K jobs or a .3% increase in unemployment.

In the comments section of his article Spengler is careful to point out the column was for the most part a riff on Marty Peretz's labeling of Obama and not meant as a literal diagnosis of the knothead, but rather a general characterization of how the clown sees the world and his place in it.
Posted by: Ignatz | October 22, 2009 at 10:37 PM
