Speaking to US troops in Korea, Obama lauded their ability to deliver a photo op. And the front page of the Times delivers!
Believe it or not, the Times does not mention Obama's photo-op prediction.

Even the Times had to settle for a tight shot with just a handful of troops. Remember those photos of Cindy Sheehan, cropped to leave out all the MSM photographers with their microphone booms, and other equipment?

JR,
A week isn't too long. The scope of this fraud won't be completely revealed until McIntyre and others sift out the data "adjustments" which lie at the core of the fraud. Anthony Watts and Steve McIntyre are the heroes of the tale and I would much prefer that McIntyre's final exposure serve as the basis for explaining how the core group of fraudsters (Hansen, Jones, Briffa and Mann) tweaked massive amounts of data by very small increments in order to generate the GIGO upon which the fraud is based.
NOTE: The comment above has not been peer reviewed and I possess no credentials conferred by institutions whose value is inversely proportional to their reputation.
Posted by: Rick Ballard | November 20, 2009 at 10:54 AM
You all do realize, this goes far beyond Can and Trade and Global warming. This goes directly to the CRAP SANDWICH that our "elected leadership" have been feeding us regarding information about a whole host of issues right down to the economy and insurance, and who knows what. If the powers that be aren't above fraud with the frickin weather, they're certainly not above fraud with healthcare, or the economy, or anything else. Hell, we KNOW that Harry Reid and Charles Schumber and Tim Geithner and Lord knows how many others have been CAUGHT committing fraud on a personal level and nothing has been done about it. Man, I am PISSED, and, unfortunately, impotent on this. Without a few million of us to march on Washington(and the MSM to report it as 272, give or take) what's to be done? Here is what I'm guessing it is:
For years we have been hearing that temperatures are rising, and man is causing it, and we need to take all sorts of expensive emergency steps to cure the problem. Now we find out they were actively cooking the numbers. Emails have revealed that the numbers never added up, we aren't warming and in order to keep the cash cow going the scientists pushing global warming fixed the numbers.
Or have I missed the entire point?

Posted by: peter | November 20, 2009 at 01:34 PM
Jane, that is pretty much it. They were clearly using games with their statistical methods to get the data to fit their theories.
One of the e-mails clearly shows that when recent data conflicted with the theory, the data was judged as bad, rather than the theory being reconsidered to match the data. This is a total rejection of the scientific method.
Posted by: Ranger | November 20, 2009 at 01:38 PM
Jane,
"The scientists charged with compiling the data upon which the warming scare is based have systematically made changes which exagerate mans effect upon the climate."
That's the core of the fraud and James Hansen and Phil Jones are the two individuals most culpable. "Normal" people will reach MEGO in about 30 seconds if you go to specifics regarding GISS and HadCRU. The fraudsters have known that from the get go - that's where the "hockey stick" graph comes into play.
I'd suggest beating the perpetrators with hockey sticks rather than hanging. The ones who make it through a coast to coast gauntlet can then start their prison terms.

Posted by: Pagar | November 20, 2009 at 01:40 PM
Jane, I'm undoubtedly going to write a longer piece for PJ today with explanation, but here's the basics:
so far, in the data, we find data and programs that skeptics like McIntyre & McKittrick have been requesting for a long time. It will be interesting to see if any of it is the data that was claimed to have been lost a few weeks ago.
In the emails we find:
- discussions of what data manipulations they've used to, shall we say, emphasize warming and de-emphasize cooling data.
- there's at least one email that looks to be a discussion of how to suppress a paper that contradicted some findings
- there's another email detailing their intention to notify a journal that they would no long submit to, or reference, that journal unless a skeptical editor was removed
- there's a discussion with the Real Climate folks about what they do to suppress dissent there
- there's a local big name climate guy saying they have a real problem since we keep having cold winters (he mentioned the big early-October snowstorm in Boulder particualrly) that can't be accounted for in their models
What it comes down to is that there is stuff that may well be the smoking gun saying they
- are refusing to share data
- are taking steps to keep data from being FOAI-ed, including deleting emails after being warned about it
- are conspiring (is that too strong a word? I don't think so) to suppress counter-evidence
- and are collaborating to subvert peer review.
This, as I say, appears to be both scientific misconduct and actual crime.
Posted by: Charlie (Colorado) | November 20, 2009 at 01:44 PM

No.
--He had one of the worst callers of all time yesterday, some lady named Katy, I think.--
I actually thought she should have been cut some slack. She sounded like a conservative, declaring she would kill herself before she went on welfare. She had just lost her job and apparently her husband had died not too long ago.
So while she was kind of "obnoxious" as Rush put it, I think she is just a stressed out, desperate person and I'd guess all of us have said things we wish we hadn't under such circumstances.

Well, this should get interesting.
The Hadley Climate Research Unit in Britain was hacked yesterday, apparently by Russian black hats, and thousands of sensitive documents, including emails from climate scientists dating back a decade, were posted online. More here.
Officials at Hadley, a leading global-warming research center, have apparently confirmed to an Australian publication that the documents are genuine.
The whole affair has much of the blogosphere alight. Blogs skeptical of man-made global warming see blood in the water.
Some of the old emails from scientists made public apparently make references to things like “hid[ing] the decline,” referring to global temperature series and different ways to slice and dice climate data.
In all, it seems there are more than 3,000 files in the hacked folders, which have been reposted in various places on the Internet.
The big Copenhagen summit had lost a lot of its appeal in recent days, as world leaders kept dialing down expectations for the climate talks. Maybe this will spice things up.

You've got individuals like Al Gore, and, I'm sure others, and companies, that are making BILLIONS while they also drive up the cost of energy, increase taxes, and generally extort wealth from the rest of us!!!!!!!!!
Holy crap people, when is enough, enough? Witness Tom Daschle, they just slither back into the light when the time is right. They never stop, they keep planning, they keep implementing little parts of their agenda, they keep STEALING from the American people! And, what's the penalty? Why, they get voted out of office, to go work for a lobbying country for six or seven figures, or are put on the boards of some pet institutions. No, folks, this has to STOP, and, if there is no recourse, it can't. These bastards need to be AFRAID. That's the whole point of the second amendment.

Ignatz, I know you and Pofarmer weren't really serious, but it's the sort of comments that places like Ell Gee Eff like to scoop up as evidence of 'wingnut' talk.
I dunno, I'm kind of waiting for another "When, in the course of human events......." moment.

Maybe we ought to invent a new legal cause of action:Scientific malpractice--and sue the bastards.

And the aforementioned Ell Gee Eff is featuring the 'Noncontroversy', of course.

Ok, what's the over-under on when the AGW proponents manage to come out with a "fake but accurate" reexamination of the data?
"Yes, we recognize there were some errors in the data previously analyzed, but our sophisticated X-17 beta filter has looked at the corrected data, and the evidence for global warming continues to be overwhelming."

I dunno jimmyk, if there's evidence in there that they've also monkeyed with the historical CO2 numbers, as I suspect there is, I don't think there's gonna be much filtering they can do. There are going to be literally hundreds of thousands of bloggers going through these guys trash, it's their worst nightmare. This has been a coordinated effort to deceive, it would seem.

Eff Ell Gee Eff. We needn't be afraid of pseudo-conservative insane people.
