Obama probably wishes the shooter was killed at the scene. Now, the authorities have a chance to probe deeper and find the root cause(s) for this tragedy.

Porchlight

Visitor, I think you are entirely correct.

What this illustrates, if we didn't already guess, is that radical Islam doesn't have to have a formal network to spread its poison. It takes people who are otherwise nothing more than devout members of a faith and turns them into killers and you can't say for sure where the seeds will sprout and flower. Just looking for Al Qaeda cells isn't enough any more.

Personally, I think that people like Noam Chomsky and other pomo intellectoids have done as much as anybody to foment the hateful image of America that foster this kind of insanity.

Militant Banana

The only digging necessary is coming up with a story that doesn't paint Muslims as Militants.

Good, Hasan is off the ventilator. I want him to wake up and find out he is still alive and surrounded by MPs instead of those virgins.

"i told y'all, these were not trivial injuries, they were life threatening. read up on the gun--it was designed to put its rounds through body armor."

Sort of. Very few gun shot wounds would be considered trivial, but the gun he used may very well be part of the reason she wasn't killed. It's impossible to say without knowing exactly where and how she was injured, but the gun was reportedly a 5.7x28mm FN FiveSeven. The 5.7x28 was indeed developed as a round for use in small submachine guns called PDWs, or "Personal Defense Weapons." It was designed the way it was (like a weak version of the 5.56mm round used in the M4/M16/AR15 family of rifles) because pointed, very small bullets moving fast (it's essentially a centerfire .22) are better at piercing armor--given the right core.

But there is no such thing as a free lunch. The characteristics that make a round good at punching through armor also make it less efficient at transferring its energy to the target. That means that what we call "terminal ballistics" aren't as good in an armor-piercing round. The things we do to improve terminal ballistics, like increasing frontal section or designing the bullet to expand or fragment in the body, are the opposite of what was done to the 5.7 to make it good at puncturing armor.

She probably, in other words, shot him with much more deadly (though less exotic) ammunition than he did her. If the media reports of a "service revolver" are to be believed, she probably used a .357 Magnum. If they're wrong (and they probably are) she probably used a 9mm or a .40 S&W, based purely on the popularity of those rounds for police work. With decent hollow-point, expanding ammunition, it's likely she gave him worse wounds than she got.
Impossible to say without knowing the facts, though.

Bottom line: don't take any media description for granted in an area where you're not an expert, because when they talk about an area where you are an expert, you'll find that they say the wackiest things.

Sara (Pal2Pal)

He was carrying a Magnum plus the semi-automatic. Hunley was hit in both thighs and her wrist. Someone else said that a round went through one thigh and into the other.

Sara (Pal2Pal)

Oh, and to answer one question, the semi had a 30 round clip, so he had to reload.

Thanks, Don. Online I've found out there are two areas where any number of posters are really expert:firearms and the American Civil War.

So true.

Am with you Don and Porchlight---That is absolutely true.

He is a Copt, so what would he know?

Somewhere in Egypt the adherants of the religion of peace will take their revenge against Copts.

President Bush is a decent man; President Obama if vile.

U.S. intelligence agencies were aware months ago that Army Major Nidal Hasan was attempting to make contact with people associated with al Qaeda, two American officials briefed on classified material in the case told ABC News.
Spinning this into the PTSD storyline will be interesting.
