It's the traditional Sunday morning open thread.
Here is a poser that stumped me at a social event last night - come up with a President who has double consonants in his first and last names. The judges did not accept my "Johnny Kennedy", so have at it.
Teddy Roosevelt. Okay not technically correct, but almost there.

We are in Belgium for Thanksgiving, although they don't celebrate Thanksgiving, of course, but we will with "mosselen met frites". Big news hear and in the UK is the election of Belgian Premier Herbert von Pompuy to be the new EU President and Barroness Ashton to be the EU Foreign Secretary. The Times put it succinctly, "they have elected two garden gnomes...". But the really big news that everyone is still talking about is the Thierry Henry handball (actually a lateral) and William Gallas' winning goal to put France in the World Cup over their indignant opponent Ireland. The Irish have their dander up and for a good reason - all appeals have bee denied, even one to the Pope. Aw to back in Europe where even the most boring stuff is exciting.

Charlie, you ask: "Is the data really valid?"
ISTM that's like asking "does the ink blot really look like three squirrels in a cluster fark?"
If there was anything to the science they wouldn't be cheating so hard. My guess ... the warmists have been claiming to know what nobody can know. Claiming to predict what nobody can predict. The science to support their claims does not (yet) exist.
That's one thing that makes it difficult to oppose as a skeptic. Their claims can't be disproven because the "science" to do so also does not yet exist. So it seems the best skeptics can do is expose the cheats and the scams.
Posted by: boris | November 22, 2009 at 09:10 AM
Melinda, of course I do — I drove past it every day. When was your friend living there? When I was there, there was a short-lived fuss that Duke was going to evict the widow who was living there; as usual with Duke, they relented as soon as it became bad publicity.
And before I wish TM happy birthday, I want to know if he's just to the age he'd rather not be reminded.

Boris, that's too strong. There's no question that there has been warming since the Little Ice Age. There's very little question that CO2 and CH4 are greenhouse gases, and that human-driven emissions are contribute to the things that make average temp go up, that is, that there is a greenhouse "forcing."
What's unclear is whether there is unusual warming, and whether the greenhouse forcing is really overwhelming and homeostatic counter-forcings (like increased cloud cover, CO2-spurred additional greenery growth, that sort of thing.)
That's not to say there's no misconduct; I think it's increasingly clear there was. For example, there's an email that seems to be saying they are protecting a student from having a real fraud caught out, and another in whih they conspire to have a report re-dated so they can claim it came in under the wire for AR4, but that a McIntyre paper didn't. I seriously think there's a good chance that some tenured people are going to lose their tenured jobs over this.
So I don't think it's fair to say all the global warming stuff is fake.
I'd say it is fair to suggest that until these errors and error-makers are caught and gone, all the AGW science is questionable.

"There's no question that there has been warming since the Little Ice Age."
And how much is caused by CO2?
Science says not much.
How much was natural?
Science says don't know ... some ... maybe most.
Does CO2 drive hypothetical feedback mechanisims to explain climate change?
Science says ... no clue.
So no. What I wrote is not "too strong".
Posted by: boris | November 22, 2009 at 09:52 AM
Charlie, a minor quibble on your article: You write: "But after a few days, certain things are beginning to become clear.
* The data appears to be largely, perhaps entirely, authentic."
Someone casually skimming the article might think you are talking about the climate/temperature data, as opposed to the e-mail "data." (I won't even get into my preference for "data" treated as plural.)

I just reread the question. Why the concern over the # of syllables?
This is a nice distraction from other matters.

For these clowns to say "the science is settled" is what really bugs me to no end. (I don't know that these specific people have said this specifically, but that's the message they've tried to convey.)
In addition to the transparency issue I've been harping on, there's also the methodological point about quantifying the uncertainty. When you're comparing data that have different degrees of reliability, there's an apples and oranges aspect to it. The degree of uncertainty about the older data has to be quantified, and if it were (accurately), I have little doubt the 95% confidence intervals would not allow any definitive statements about hockey sticks and trends.

"Anybody voting for this ignorant scrunt can't be considered a serious person."
With Chavez controlled voting machines and Acorn controlled voter Registration it's a little bit hard to tell exactly how many, but a number of people apparently voted for a person who:
Seemingly, cannot produce an American birth certificate.
Apparently, has no school records, and very few job records.
Seemingly, Has no known associates who are not either terrorists or supporters of terrorist.
Appears to have the worst record of favoring the killing of aborted babies of any political figure alive today.
Appears to have done little positive good for anyone, except his wife, children and his communist friends.
Got to the US Senate, got appointed to head a sub committee on NATO (that's where they said the important war support was supposed to come from) The committee never met. As far as I can find, the Senator never did a single thing to strenghten the defense of the US,
Has a wife who apparently feels that there is nothing to be proud of in the US (that is until her husband got elected).
The list can go on and on.
But he was elected, according to the people who are supposed to decide these things.
It wasn't just the voters in Michigan that weren't serious,IMO.

I wrote and posted a whole long open thread earlier on Joy Behar doing a birther segment on her new TV show not too long ago. And I see that Typepad ate it. Well maybe just as well. But now I have no interest in typing it all out again.
But to summarize, it was something about Joy trying to make her birther guest look like an idiot, when Joy was the one who looked like she had no knowledge on the subject and how Joy seemed like her world view shaken by that, if only for one second. It was about how that illustrated groupthink. But never mind.

Someone should advise Andrea Mitchell that it is not good for her image to appear to be a crazed groupie trying to break a police line to get a rock star to autograph a magazine for her. Because that's what Mitchell looked like. The best part of it was that Palin was giving Mitchell the look of tolerance that a star gives to a somewhat deranged but not dangerous fan.
