Was it really as bad as it sounds?

I might not be the most objective, but even looking at it for just the theater, it didn't work. He "worked the crowd" for applause lines and on the meater parts of the speech he was begging, not leading. It wasn't a speech that I would expect a President to give if he were serious about regaining political capital or relaunching his agenda.

It rambled on for 20 minutes too long. It was a grab bag of catch phrases. It was all things to all people-nuclear power, end DADT, Blaming Bush for the deficit in his first year, and a skeletal industrial policy (which appears to only be the slogan) "we will double our exports in 5 years."

His "promise" is an excellent example of the fact that he is, charitably speaking, of mediocre intellect. Not only would he find it impossible to derive the compound growth rate necessary to double exports in five years, he doesn't even realize that what he spouted would require an expansion in port facilities that would take more than five years to design and permit.
