Dave (in MA)

The struggles are the reason he ran, but he inherited them.

centralcal

lol, peter.

JM Hanes

Third, the gazetteer
Fourth, the letters

RichatUF

I'm ready for a drink, but only have coffee.

peter

Reading letters from children asking why they have to move from home? Did Harry Reid's kids write to him?

centralcal

eewwww - Nancy is already chewing on her mouth tissues.

PD

This is the exactly the same stuff he's been saying over and over for months.

Sara (Pal2Pal)

Krauthammer on Obama's inability to understand Scott Brown win: "level of obliviousness that approaches clinical denial".

MayBee

That Washington is a dastardly being.
It hasn't solved problems, and it is in our President's way.

MayBee

One of the most difficult years in our HISTORY?

PD

I don't think I've ever seen anyone mail it in for a SOTU.

Ann

History Lesson and cadence, JMH. :)

Sue

Obama likes to read from his left. Reminds me of a horse I once had. She favored the left side too. Turned on a dime that way but shied away from turning right. Barrell racing was fun.

PD

He's hatemongering.

Jane

Who writes a letter to the president to ask why he has to move? Give me a break.

matt

is it over yet?

PD

Heh. FOX just brought up some bumper music briefly. I guess they're ready for a commercial.

matt

I have an idea. Let's all gather in front of the White House and chant "Death To America". That way Obama will feel the love.

MayBee

I'm surprised to hear him bring out folksy cadence tonight.

caro

MO's outfit.

From the back she looks like a ripe plum.

RichatUF

So he is going with "hating the bank bailout"?

I wouldn't just what was popular, I'd also do what was necessary. Supported the previous administration, but made it better (shhh. don't tell anyone that Treasury wrote off the UAW's bailout of 55 billion). More taxes on banks? Yea, lets tax people trying to use their money.

centralcal

He is a tax cutter! (oh, they are all on welfare).

Elliott

So he admits a huge Democratic majority in the House, the same in the Senate, and a Dem president is not a government worthy of our "decency and strength."

RichatUF

We cut taxes. 25 "tax cuts"...humm rebates.

Where is the applause?

Dave (in MA)

Let me know when we get any private sector jobs.

PD

That "not raised taxes by a single dime" claim is one he gave last year -- right before raising the cigarette tax, much of which is borne by those making less than $250K.

Sara (Pal2Pal)

I think when most Americans think taxes, they think income taxes and withholding, not some tax credit they may or may not get depending on the criteria.

RichatUF

He is lying about Porkculus. They tested 2 million.

daddy

We're about to launch and there's no TV here, so you guys are great fun to read. Keep it up folks---fine job. Will join you in a drink in about 10 hours.

Elliott

We did not cut taxes for Red America or Blue America, we cut taxes for the United States of America!

MayBee

Is he going to bring up Caterpillar's "promise" to hire due to the Recovery Act?

PD

"Human Target" was pre-empted for *this*?

MayBee

Is anybody drinking on "Wall Street"?

JM Hanes

MayBee:

"I'm surprised to hear him bring out folksy cadence tonight."

Didn't you get the memo? It's Populist Obama!

Jane

He's a moron.

PD

He's going to railroad us and take us for a ride.

RichatUF

Jobs must be the focus and that is why I am calling for a new jobs bill tonight (but I thought the last one did so well?).

America's businesses...but government can create conditions for business to thrive...blah, blah, blah...more porkulus...I want to take $30 billion from TARP and shovel it to my cronies in community banks to loan to small businesses...ohh more tax cuts...and of course "the infrastructure of tomorrow"...green jobs bullshit...

glenda

I can't watch this pitiful excuse for a leader spout lies. I will rely on clearer minds (here on JOM) to report on the stinkbomb.
I wish the Republicans would have the guts to laugh, hysterically; when he continues with his self-adulation and pretense. What he is saying is that he isn't up to the job, and it's not really "good to be the king".
I get nauseous when I think he is our CIC.
Vive le Bush !!

Sara (Pal2Pal)

Ann Althouse:

8:26. Small businesses are good. (Come on, talk to them.) Big business sucks though. We want to help small business grow... so it can become big business and then we can hate it.
clarice

It's something listening to this drivel with those peabrains Biden and Pelosi nodding in the background.

MayBee

How is this new jobs bill different from the Stimulus bill. Which, according to him, is creating jobs left and right.

Jane

WOw, my comment disappeared.

Who is telling him all this stuff?

PD

Which some call the Lost Decade?

Hm, wasn't there something like 55 months in a row of jobs growth under Bush?

Sue

Obama's magic is gone. He's a one trick pony and the circus has left town.

RichatUF

Close those loopholes and tax breaks that ship jobs overseas...yea...Senate pass a jobs bill...I want a healthcare jobs bill without delay.

Long term growth, we cannot afford another expansion like the one we had last decade (?)...a new foundation...China is not waiting, Germany is not waiting...serious investments in clean energy...math and science...

Dave (in MA)

I thought the US wasn't exceptional? What happened?

Jane

Did you ever for one second contemplate that a US president would implore us to catch up with Germany and India?

And if you don't accept second place Mr. President why have you done everything possible to get us there?

Elliott

I guess his non-acceptance of second place explains why he put us 4th.

MayBee

The stars are aligned for a jobs bill.

daddy

"wasn't there something like 55 months in a row of jobs growth under Bush?"

Sure but he inherited it from Clinton don't ya' know.

Dave (in MA)

Extend the Bush tax cuts that are going to expire and get off my TV!

laura

Jane, Had to change the channel, the not so little one, was beginning to use words she is not supposed to say. Of course, they were certainly not inappropriate.
The pointing the finger thing is really getting to her.

Jane

Nuclear power plants. My my. Oil and gas development? Sarah Palin must have spooked him.

PD

These repeated references to the failure of "Washington" to "get serious" and address the problems facing us are odious and reprehensible. Mr. President, you've been in office a year. Are you saying that you've been doing nothing all that time? You can't blame the past without us noticing that you're part of it.

Dave (in MA)

HA!

Jane

Tell her I'm proud of her Laura!

Oh dear - he hasn't heard about climategate.

Sue

35 minutes and he has said nothing new.

daddy

From Steven Green Drunkblogging:

6:20PM “I’ve proposed a fee on the biggest banks.”

6:33PM “I’m not interested in punishing banks.”

PD

I get it now. "Green energy" jobs, that have to be heavily subsidized with our taxes, will grow the economy.

MayBee

Yeah, Sue, 25 minutes of defending your signature initiative that passed last year can't be a good thing to have to do.

narciso

Ok, that theory that Bo was the speech writer (floated in Big Journalism) gains creedence

MayBee

I like the plan to export things.

RichatUF

Serious financial reform...strong health financial market...if we guard against the same recklessness of the past decade...we cannot let them (bankers, special interests) win...encourage innovation-energy...batteries and solar panels, building safe clean nuclear plants, opening offshore oil and gas, comprehensive energy and climate bill (cap-and-tax)...overwhelming evidence on climate change...so we have to go back to a 19th Century energy policy...more exports (?)...a new goal to double our exports (shhhh. that ought to kill the dollar), a national export innotiative...something about a trade bill and "playing by the rules"...bring up Doha...invest in the skills of our people and shovel more money into our schools...

Sara (Pal2Pal)

I'm sure those who got kicked out of the DC voucher program are thrilled.

glasater

A tweet from of all people:

ezraklein

This opening feels very much like a high school term paper on the State of the Union.

PD

"A high school diploma no longer guarantees a job."

When was anyone ever *guaranteed* a job, regardless of number of diplomas?

Jane

Mandatory Medical School for everyone!

Jane

We decree that the value of everyone's house is now $100k greater!

PD

I like the plan to export things.

Can we export Obama, permanently?

Sue

Good grief. No one should go broke period. It isn't fun. But where does it stop? We can't be broke because of medical needs. We can't be broke because of college. We can't be broke because of housing.

MayBee

Community colleges are very good, but the problem with people without college degrees not getting good jobs isn't going to be solved by sending everybody to college.

Don't like this public service debt forgiveness thing. Why is the manager of the driver's license bureau more important than a doctor or an engineer?

RichatUF

His take over of the student loan industry, shoveling money into community colleges, and Biden's report on middle-class families (wonder if Rev. Wright might have contributed)...step up refi's to make housing more affordable...still need health insurance reform...Let's clear some things up...I didn't take it up because it was good politics...

YOU LIE!!!

Elliott

I fully expect the punditariat to exclaim, "This speech was a real barn burner. The Obama magic is back."

PD

"Let's clear a few things up."

How 'bout you shut your lying mouth, you arrogant street punk?

centralcal

I know it ain't over yet. But, I am. HGTV here I come.

Read you all in the morning.

MayBee

Apparently the only thing we are allowed to go broke from is taxation.

bgates

He's had a tough day.

Howard Zinn died earlier.

Sue

MayBee,

Duh. I didn't think of that one.

Jane

PD,

I wouldn't be so kind.

clarice

MayBee is a seriously evil person. Just saying..

(I had to turn this stuff off. I was losing brain cells at a frightful rate and I've none to spare.)

Jane

Ain't gonna happen Bambi.

Rick Ballard

I would have thought he would spend more time using the successful accomplishments of his first year as the platform from which to launch the anticipated successes of the second year. I've been yawning a bit - did I miss that during a yawn?

Jane

On to the Bush bashing.

PD

"The massive fiscal hole in which we find ourselves."

Yeah, in which we find ourselves. Like you and this Congress had nothing to do with it. It just sort of happened while we weren't looking.

Jane

Wait - he had 25 tax cuts so how can he say the 2 Bush passed were wrong? Hmmmm

RichatUF

Maybee-

//The US is the world's largest exporter. Oil and dollarized global trade is the reason why we have such a high trade imbalance.//

He's still droning on about healthcare. My plan is better, so stop complaining...let us come together and get it done...government spending...setting the record straight...blaming the Bush Administration...2 wars, tax cuts...it ain't my fault...

Sue

If I didn't hate Obama before, and I did, I hate him now. I detest this fool.

MayBee

These deficits occurred "Before I walked in the door..." says the guy who sat in Congress, where the budgets are written and passed.

PD

We'll have a freeze on government spending. Except for all these exemptions, which means this is just another one of my empty, meaningless rhetorical tricks.

PD

I've been yawning a bit - did I miss that during a yawn?

No, but you blinked.

Sara (Pal2Pal)

Purple = allegiance to Independents, so I'm told.

PD

Ah. So if the Senate doesn't do my bidding, I'll just go ahead and defy it with an executive order.

Soylent Red

My very molecules are vibrating with loathing for this lying street punk.

daddy

Drudge has got a picture of Harry Reid yawning during the speech.

I didn't think Harry was that intelligent.

RichatUF

Spending freeze...programs that don't work (Americorps and Head Start)...more taxes...massive deficit when I took office...bi-partisian fiscal commission (and sign an executive order stepping on Congress regarding the budget process)...something about budget surpluses in the 1990's...freeze takes place next year...a strawman argument of his opponents...tax cuts...that is what brought us here...that is what caused the crisis...let us invest in people...a deficit trust...

Dave (in MA)

Last time they had one of these that didn't have Teddy clapping at every mention of "investment", little Barry Soetoro was still in diapers.

peter

What a low rent POS, still bashing his predecessor after appointing him in charge of the Haiti mission.

Elliott

Just words.

Dave (in MA)

">http://aftermathnews.files.wordpress.com/2008/04/soros-psychonut.jpg"> Yeah, we have to restore the public trust.

RichatUF

Give the people the givernment they deserve (and we got it good). No lobbyists, etc., more ethics rules, special interests (sure Big Green and Big Labor haven't spread some money around)...earmark reform (I recall that he wacked McCain on the head over the earmarks during the campaign)...he is just droning on...
