The current CW is that running against Bush won't win the Dems any elections. That is a reminder of Carter Exceptionalism, since Republicans were able to run against him until 1992.

Carter was Bush's fault too!
Wait, wrong Bush...

Actually, Tom, until 2012. (And let's all hope that it ends then).

Please no links to Sully's place without a fair warning. The guy gives me the creeps, and is the reason I discontinued my print subscription to the Atlantic.

And Kevin Mattson is trying to rehabilitate Carter and his scolding of America.

Whilst Obama does a pretty fair imitation.

There must be some way to get Obama to do a nationally televised speech in a sweater.
Posted by: Soylent Red | January 25, 2010 at 08:13 PM
Not just any sweater--a Mr Rogers type sweater..and make sure hthe totus knows the word "malaise".

And jeans.

And not just any jeans, but his infamous "mom jeans".

It's rather amazing that Jimmy Carter actually looks somewhat good when compared to Obama, eh?
It reminds me of that old Steve Martin bit from the album "Let's Get Small" about how great the banjo is, and how it makes everything OK. Of course, I am really dating myself, especially if no one knows what the heck I am talking about.

WT, I gave a talk to a respected neurological institute with the title "Let's Get Small." It was on nanotech.
I guess that means I'm old too.

Get a sweater factory to hire someone. When Obama shows up to claim the credit, make him put on the sweater.

I don't think he meant a show in China.

I wonder if now that the bloom is off the Obama rose if some investigative journalist will have the cajones to vet the man that should have been vetted 3 years ago?

Jimmy Carter never said "malaise" during the Malaise Speech, though it was in a draft of the speech.

Very interesting link, Sara. Especially "TED at January 25, 2010 5:38 PM" noting the amazing gaps in Obama's history and how much of his educational records are sealed. And that there's not even a photo of him in his graduation class' book! Could that be true?
I'd like to know more about Khalid al-Mansoor / Obama / Black Panthers.

Once Reagan won the election in 1980, the GOP ran against Kennedy far more than Carter. They ran against the "blame America first" crowd. They didn't have to raise the specter of Carter's memory. There were dozens of Democrats pushing wacky leftist bromides in real time.

Every time I see Iran on the news and the complete mess in Gaza, I think of that political gift that keeps on giving---James Earl Peanut.

Indeed, Carter never used the word "malaise" in that speech. I seem to remember him stating, however, that the problem was "You-all average Americans just suck!" I may be misremembering, though.

The Democrats ran against Herbert Hoover until they started running against Richard Nixon. And Against Nixon until Bush. Why would they change now?
