We have been ignoring the racially-charged drama at UC San Diego, but this latest plot twist in the noose sub-plot merits a mention:
The campus paper publishes an anonymous letter by a minority student who calls the incident 'a mindless act and stupid mistake.'
The UC San Diego student reportedly responsible for hanging a noose last week in a campus library issued a public, but anonymous, apology Monday and said she had no racist motivation.
Here is the letter, which includes this:
I have a story that needs to be heard. I am the girl you’ve read about, the one who hung the noose in Geisel Library.
Firstly, I’m writing to apologize. I don’t have an excuse for what I did, and I deeply regret it.
...I know what I did was offensive — regardless of my intentions — I am just trying to say I’m sorry. As a minority student who sympathizes with the students that have been affected by the recent issues on campus, I am distraught to know that I have unintentionally added to their pain.
Hmm, a minority student leaving nooses? That would be a real "ah-ha!" moment if she were black. However, the NY Times says this about the racial breakdown in the California state schools (not just San Diego):
...the University of California continues to struggle to diversify its campuses. Black and Latino undergraduate enrollment systemwide plummeted and, although gains have been made in the numbers of minority students since then, the proportion of white (30.5 percent) and Asian (39.8 percent) students enrolled last year far exceeded that of blacks (3.8 percent) and Latinos (20.4 percent).
I think Asians are still considered to be a minority, despite being the largest category.
So as a matter of random selection, most "minorities" on a California campus are Asian. In addition, in sympathizing with "the students that have been affected by the recent issues on campus" the writer apologizes for adding to "their" pain, not "our pain". That could make sense if she were black but felt no solidarity with other students feeling affected by recent events; it would make a lot more sense if she were not black at all.
And a last thought - she claims she and some friends were just merrily playing with a rope and one earnest lad happened to show off his knot prowess by fashioning a noose, which she innocently left hanging in the library. OK, that sounds pretty dumb, but if it was not meant maliciously it would take someone not steeped in the history of blacks and whites in America to behave that way.
I don't think it makes the incident a hoax; I just think the lesson is a bit more complicated.
AND WHAT KIND OF A WORLD ARE WE LIVING IN... C'mon, in this Facebook age is it really possible that this woman is not widely known? A commenter here says she is Chinese-American. I say she has been outed somewhere.
the entire episode about the Compton Cookout just goes to show that the diversity-mongers in Academia are truly to blame. First, they push the idea that everyone should celebrate (and emulate?) everyone else's culture (particular minority culture) and when a bunch of students do that, all hell breaks loose. They can't have it both ways.

For however terrible lynching was in the Deep South long ago, it was not uncommon for white men to be lynched too. Lynching was a form of "vigillante justice". But with the History Channel, Black History month and the media repeating injustices down to blacks over and over and over and over, 24/7, anyone under about 35 has a skewered version of history that is inaccurate. They also probably think blacks could not vote until 1965. The race industry, which Obama is part of, makes sure these inaccuracies continue to be believed. It's good for business.

The notion that our colleges are hotbeds of race hate so that every bit of rope or blackface or whatever becomes the cause of demos and investigations and fever pitched assemblies strikes me as lunacy. The evidence free notion ups the ante for hoaxers and increases the chances that people will just have to leave exams and all to demonstrate their purity and good hearts.
I'm sick of this ..it's as neurotic a phenomenon as the Children's Crusades.
The last noose (Columbia) seems to have been placed on her own door by a black professor who was unqualified for her position and about to be canned. Most of these do turn out to be hoaxes or dumb ass moves...none to my knowledge except for an occasional Muslim driving thru campus buildings on jihad had anything to do with HATE.

I'm unclear about when nooses became defacto anti-black statements.
It seems like a recent development.

LUN is a Newsbusters story about some MSNBC guy accusing the Tea Party organizer of including people that want to kill blacks and Jews.
The groups that are always talking about killing Jews are in the leftist marches. Look at the Zombietime photos of some of the posters in the ANSWER marches. Also all the Nazi images about Bush and Cheney...
I saw nothing like that at the 9-12 Tea Party. The only "Obama with a Hitler mustache" sign was the Larouche people.

Can't remember if I mentioned this before, but years back I tried to get an American Indian accepted into a Naval Aviation Boot Camp Program. He had a decent college resume/degree, 250 hours flight time in Cessna's, and played sports and had a decent employment history.
On the requisite AQT/FAR test, which all Navy/Marine Corps guys here are familiar with, he was about 5 points less than whatever the minimum was at the time for the racial group "White/Caucasian."
At the time 1985, he would have passed if he had been Hispanic, as they were allowed about 15 points less to qualify. If he had been Black/African American, at the time the test score was totally irrelevant. In their case simply that they took the test counted. Their package was shipped to DC and "The Whole Man" concept for selection to the program was employed regarding their potential selection, so if he had been Black instead of Native American he would have been welcomed with open arms.
As for Asians, they were also not given any different parameters than Whites or Native Americans---only Blacks or Hispanics.
Have no idea if that situation still exists, but it definitely existed from 1984 through 1986, and it truly griped me, especially in light of this Native American kid who was a very decent guy.

Janet--I forget where I saw it but there is one guy, not in the tea party, who shows up with hate signs at the rallies and draws all the reporters to him like bees to honey even though it is well documented he is a fraud who is regularly ejected whenever it is possible to throw him out.
Be prepared for this--don't even argue about the other side does it..Just call b.s. on it..It's an old leftist trick.

Clarice/Janet---
Perhaps have a big sign ready to hold up pointing at that guy saying
"This Jerk is not a member of the Tea Party- He's out to denigrate us to the Public."
Something like that, that could be shoved near the camera shots and impossible for the media to ignore.

Sometimes Asians are minorities; sometimes they aren't. I learned about a striking example of that during the fight out here over I-200.
Japanese-Americans were not minorities when it came to admission into our public universities, but they were minorities when it came to bidding on some contracts.
(And the biggest beneficiaries of the contracting set asides, or whatever they called them, were white women, many of them married to white men. I'm not quite sure how that arrangement brought racial justice to the state, but then I was a supporter of I-200.)

I'm getting a very mixed message from a lot of conservatives. When it's convenient, they condescend that "life isn't fair. Deal with it!'' When that's not convenient, they whine endlessly about how unfair life is for them.

(1) UCSD: A group of dumb white frat guys hold an event called a "Compton Cookout." This pisses people off as it used Black History Month as a reason to mock black people with racist stereotypes. Also involved is some idiot who tries to use this opportunity for shameless self-promotion, who also happens to be black. To say the least, the guy is basically a wannabe Flavor Flav.
(2) UCSD: Another dumb white frat guy gets mad that blacks are offended of being relegated to a bigoted stereotype. He tries to hold another racist event.
(3) UCSD: Meanwhile, a terrible student media publication (which, after viewing their website consists of all white staff, nudity, staff wrestling each other, and well, not much else), pushes their limits calling black students "ungrateful n------" - not just that word, but also that apparently the black students owed them something. They have a reputation of being trashy, and at this point, administration and faculty rush to condemn racism by students of the campus and various protests begin. Funding is also cut from all student media at UCSD, creating an extra bitter controversy.
(4) UCSD: On Friday of that week, a noose is found in the library. Everything gets worked in a frenzy and - something I'll address later - a large amount of white commenter’s on the internet begin claiming that is was probably a black student who planted it in order to gain more sympathy. In addition, there are rumors of a threatening note sent to the Guardian and a second noose, there was no second noose, and the threat seems to be just a rumor.
(6) UCSD: Protests basically happen at all schools in support of the students. There are various sit-ins, and teach-ins, and what have you. School administrators become pushed to be more active in fixing what’s going on.
I have not seen this noose person, but most of you blame her and conveniently forget wear this all originated. Dear Beck, Hedgecock, Hannity, O’Reilly, Rush and Savage your chickens have come home to roost.

I'd be grateful if the massive success of Fox diminished conservative whining about the media, but, alas, it's only increased. It always amazes me how unashamedly some conservatives proclaim their failures in media and academia. I think cons do just fine in both spheres, but do have a big problem with defensiveness/paranoia.

Montana, your last sentence is utter nonsense. Where are you getting your information that any of these people (a) had anything to do with the trouble at that college?
Frankly, were I running the school I;d abolish restrictions on hate speech and cut out the damned sit ins. If the students there have time for all this crap, the college is tough enough.
I'd call in every professor; demand the work load be increased and the grading be toughened.
Then we'd see how much longer this childish , baiting b.s. continued.

Darn it, I seem to have lost a post. MayBee, I saw that about Rangel, but I think it's just a matter of time. I posted the Politico story about it on the coffee party thread...

I suspect this incident is being used to push for race-based affirmative action admissions.
Most of the articles I can find on the UCSD racial makeup include this information (this is regarding a letter written protesting the handling of these incidents):
The passage of Proposition 209-which banned affirmative action at California's public universities-has led to this "frighteningly" low representation of the community on campus, the letter stated.

bunky: I'd be grateful if the massive success of Fox diminished conservative whining about the media, but, alas, it's only increased.
Bunky, your generalizations wring the substance out of your accusations simply to make a point. As a member of the press for almost four decades, a public television host of a news interview show for two years, author of a book on the subject, I can label enough media misbehavior to fill Danté's levels of hell.
Journalism is broken -- and mostly by the liberal contingent. And if you can't identify the misbehavior and label it, it is because you don't care to. Look into a mirror, son. You ARE the problem, creating noise where there should be news.
I suspect you don't care, because you think it's a game with no consequences. Poor deluded child. You are about two clicks from my Narcisolator troll remover.

When you figure out why you're so sure conservatives fail -- relative to liberals -- at media, academia and pop culture, be sure to get back to me. And don't forget to decide whether Fox is a success at promoting "fair and balanced" news (relative to liberal media) or a failure.
Until then, go ahead and keep on whining every time I accuse conservatives of whining.

I have many years in and around the UC system. Several observations seem relevant here:
1) the so-called Compton Cookout was a PR event organized by a black comedian who has a rather aggressive sense of humor that pokes fun at race card politics. the event was attended by a multiracial group of students and non students off campus
2) there was no conduct at the party that even comes close to violating the UCSD code of conduct yet the university has promised an "aggressive" investigation.
3) the noose incident appears to have been entirely innocent and hardly seems to justify the conclusion - at this point anyway - of the UCSD administration that it was "racist" or a hate crime, both of which they suggest on their official web page. that minority student has a great lawsuit as the University has just ruined her career.
4) the hood incident is ambiguous at best. Geisel is Dr. Seuss, whom some here may know, drew racially insensitive cartoons lampooning Japanese officials during WW II. thus there are some suggestions the hood was an effort to attack the idea of having named the library after Geisel
5) the UC system on a daily basis is home to more than 500,000 Californians. there are, as in the rest of America, likely similar racially tinged incidents there on a daily basis. these should be deplored and racial sensitivity should be a part of the culture. but it is almost certainly the case that what is really going here at this moment is that the ethnic studies/multiculti crowd is deeply worried that their indefensibly soft academic homes are going to face the budget knife. thus these incidents have been "cherry picked" to create an impression of a race war.
recently a berkeley law academic recently called for a commitment at UC to making queer studies as important on campus as biology apparently ignoring the importance of biology to solving the AIDS epidemic that has killed more gay men than all of the anti-gay discrimination and rhetoric in human history.
6) UC Berkeley is the home of the free speech movement that was inspired by the civil rights movement. it is time for the university faculty to step forward in defense of free speech, even racist speech. the university should make clear that it will not discipline students who engage in racist speech. Instead they seem intent on jumping on the bandwagon because they see it as a way to put pressure on the state legislature to cut elsewhere. of course those cuts will likely fall much more harshly on minorities in the form of rollbacks in the limited forms of social safety net protections available in California.
