Neo

This seems a bit like "deja vu".

I mean it looks just like what he did with loans for nuclear plants. First, he stopped them then he was for them.

Is John Kerry the POTUS ? .. acting POTUS ?

narciso

So zeroing out, Ares and Constellation, ended up the offworld version of closing Gitmo

matt

the man is an absolute fool. I think we're hitting a turning point. LUN

Jack is Back!

Boy, will he be surprised how Florida has gone back to being a big Red state. The Orlando, Melbourne, Cocoa and Jacksonville contingents of the Tea Party movement will be out in spades force. I plan to be there, that is a given. I have my "Don't Tread on Me" flag and my Department of Homeland Security "Right-Wing Extremist" certification. So, I should be set.

BTW, we have all decided, no matter the weather, to wear flip-flops and carry mops.

Kevin B

"Obama has run out of places enemies to go and apologize here on Earth."

He could try apologising to HM Queen here in Britain. We can forgive him for the cheap gifts, but sending Hilary to interfere in the Falklands dispute while more UK troops were dying in Afghanistan was over the top.

Jane

Matt -

From your lips.

I too sense a tipping point, but I can never tell if it is just me.

Clarice

ras -19

Pofarmer

Matt, same thing here. People are pissed, and vocal. Never heard so many people talking politics.

Extraneus

Think Massa will rescind his resignation just to vote No on health-care?

I note that a number of people here smelled a rat, since Democrats have to do a lot worse to be dropped than gay hits on their staffers.

DebinNC

Massa hinted on a radio show last night he might rescind.

Appalled

The Ras stuff does not interest me until we see what happens with Pelosicare. (Make no mistake, if the helathcare thing gets through, it will be Nancy Pelosi's accomplishment, and proof that she has the LBJ skills to go with the LBJ ethics.)

I do not see this thing passing, at this point. I am fascinated by Obama continuing to double down. Is this an astute gamble? Who is telling him that it is? What is his game if he loses?

Winning probably does help him -- if only that his time horizon (2012 rather than November) is different than Congress, and he does not get a loser label attached to him. But if he loses, here, he loses big, and this would be his third major loss in forums assumed to be friendly to him. (Olympics, Climate Change, Healthcare). He loses here, the presumption of power that is so much a part of a successful Presidency is toast.

Wow.

I really don't know if the guy has steel gonads, or merely solid metal between the ears. I think we are about to find out.

Janet

Or someone is blackmailing him. His sketchy background has come back to haunt him.

Captain Hate

I really don't know if the guy has steel gonads, or merely solid metal between the ears.

I do

Jane

The Massa allegations won't help.

Clarice

Let's say other Congressmen are being muscled--with Massa's new claims out there, they can tough it out, I think.

Extraneus

Massa should hang in there for the vote now. Think I'll send him a nice email.

Porchlight

Great post, Matt.

Appalled, I'm encouraged that you think it still has a chance of failing. I have veered up and down from "fix is in" to "not so sure" in recent days. My insomnia, temporarily quelled after Brown's victory, is back in force.

Altmire and Adler, two previous no votes, have hinted they will not flip to yes, via Politico.

rse

Clarice-

Did you see the AOS on BO as a legal phony?

Consistent with our analysis. Seems like more are willing to talk now.

Appalled

Porchlight:

Obama does not have a good sense of when he has something wired. See Olympics and Copenhagen.

While Pelosi is certainly the most competent politician working the Democratic side of healthcare, her own interests probably require her to double down, whether she has the votes or not.

So, you can't take the actions of Pelosi or Obama as any kind of guide to whether the votes will be there or not. Obama does not know, and Pelosi's base requires her to push, rather than give up.

If you want the minute to minute, check out Jay Cost at realclearpolitics.

Extraneus

Would they have to knife a fellow Democrat, in a red district, if they had the votes? If Massa's telling the truth, and he hangs in, then they don't have the votes.

rse

Also that Justice Civil Rights inquiries into equal access to AP courses and college prep curricula announced today did not give me a warm, fuzzy feeling.

When you push poor reading and math curricula in K-12, how can you have equal enrollments?

Only the tutored kids and the geniuses still obtain previous levels of skills and knowledge.

Equal outcomes in all areas. The mandated demise of the US.

Extraneus

It must be pretty close, though, or they wouldn't have gone after him.

Appalled

E--

Bear in mind that a politician in this kind of jeapordy often makes these kind of charges, whether true or not.

DebinNC

Drudge is doing his part to make Massa'a charges a national story. .

Porchlight

While Pelosi is certainly the most competent politician working the Democratic side of healthcare, her own interests probably require her to double down, whether she has the votes or not.

True, and your LBJ comparison was right on.

RCP is overloaded thanks to the Drudge link re: Massa. I read Cost last week, will check soon to see if there are updates.

Man, Drudge is really going crazy on this Massa thing. It could be huge.

Extraneus

Sure, Appalled, but what's the likelihood that they'd have come after him now, especially, if he was a yes vote?

Extraneus

Heh. Showering with Rahm Emmanuel, no less. (Drudge)

Jane

Hopefully the Massa thing will get Hoyer too.

What a bunch of lying scum. Charlie Rangel has been stealing from us in his official capacity for a million years, but Massa gets thrown out immediately for making a pass at a private wedding. How screwed up is this country?

Ignatz

--While Pelosi is certainly the most competent politician working the Democratic side of healthcare...--

God how I hope that is true.

Appalled

E --

This is also a situation where everybody could be right -- Massa is accurate about the blackmail, and the gossip on what happened could also be true.

Ick. Makes me want to take a shower. As long as Rahm is nowhere nearby.

DebinNC

Drudge also has a story on NBC's Chuck Todd saying: "There’s no worse crime in journalism these days than simply deciding something’s a story because Drudge links to it.” Uh huh, yet NBC repeated at once CBS's now dubious claim that Adam Gadahm was captured.

MayBee

Poor Chuck Todd.
MSNBC takes stories from MSNBC and Firedoglake, but he rails against Drudge.
I wonder if Chuck Todd watches MSNBC.

Rob Crawford

Charlie Rangel has been stealing from us in his official capacity for a million years, but Massa gets thrown out immediately for making a pass at a private wedding. How screwed up is this country?

Nothing that ignoring the self-declared "watchdogs" who have climbed into the laps of the corrupt won't fix. The press is corrupt, in every sense of the word. Ignore them, ridicule them, go around them -- don't let them set the terms of debate.

It's the only way to clean things up.

glasater

Maybee--

Have you been watching via twitter Breitbart going after Media Matters?
Something to behold....

Clarice

I did not see that, rse.

I'll go look but in future it would be of great help to have a LINK.

MayBee

glasater- yes, and I am thrilled to see someone push back against them. They've been dishonestly gathering scalps (like Imus's) for too long now.

Jane

Massa is on Beck for the full hour today. He's clearly going to drop a dime on the democrats. This should be fun.

Jane

Oops - tomorrow not today

Stephanie

Jane, Massa mentions by name that Lonsberry fellow that I linked to the other day for some judicious ranting about the push against him.

Lonsberry may be part and parcel of the smear campaign being waged against him.

LUN

glasater

Thanks Maybee--me two:)

glasater

White House ops must have been digging into Massa's file--'cause why else would Rahm walk into a shower with nothing on and start in on him.

daddy

Talking about Gratuitous Cheap Shots;

On 5 March Interior Secretary Salazar trumpeted his new multi-million dollar Climate Research Institute, scheduled to be up and running in 6 weeks in some as yet undetermined location in Anchorage. You'll pay the rent until they find room on campus. The headline in the ADN; ">http://www.adn.com/2010/02/11/1135066/anchorage-to-get-regional-climate.html"> Anchorage to get regional climate science center

Naturally then, The ADN decides it might be a good time to identify and attack the new institutes enemy---Big Oil. So today we get a story on a Biologist, who after writing multiple books and science papers, took employment with BP (Big Oil-Brit Petroleum) on the north slope. The unbiased headline:

">http://www.adn.com/2010/03/07/1172714/big-oil-biologist-defends-work.html"> "'Big Oil' biologist defends work
ON THE INSIDE: Streever doesn't feel he has sold out".

How bout first we kill all the News Media, then we kill all the Lawyer's (locals excepted:)

Jane

Stephanie,

I'm a lot more outraged about Charlie Rangel - whose actions have a much bigger impact on me than Massa's. Altho I suspect if Massa was a "yes" vote on health care I could work up the necessary rage.

clarice

daddy, How about we run a free online Anchorage newspaper..like the Washington Examiner here which is eating the (washington)Times and Post's lunch.

Porchlight

Oops - tomorrow not today

Is tomorrow too late? As far as staying on to vote no, that is. My understanding is that today is his last day and he plans to resign effective tomorrow.

Jane

Well teh resignation is scheduled for 5:00 PM. If he goes thru with it, he loses credibility I think, altho he also paints a big fat bulls eye on his chest.

Extraneus

Wonder what the "or else" was.

Resign by 5pm Monday or else... what? His story that he has to resign because otherwise the ethics probe continues doesn't hold water, especially if his other story about the wedding has any truth to it.

The guy's obviously a flake, and they really do have the dirt on him.

Clarice

So he' s a "flake"..big deal..everyone on his side of the aisle is a flake and/or a crook, it would seem.

Jane, I'm puzzled. Why would you care more about the blackmailing of Massa if he were for the healthcare bill?

Sue

Ex,

That's what I'm thinking. Or I should say that is what I was thinking. Now I don't know. Why would he go after them if they had something on him? Lots of pronouns there.

Jane

Because Clarice, in my jaded outlook, I'd be perfectly fine with him being forced out of Congress if he was a yes vote.

I suspect we are saying the same thing, I'm just saying it badly.

Extraneus

Me, too, because I like hot blue flake on flake action as much as the next person, and maybe more.

MayBee

Me, too, because I like hot blue flake on flake action as much as the next person, and maybe more.

ha ha ha ha ha!

rse

Here's the Post article on "enforcing the civil rights laws".

LUN

It has the equity quote. Will also retrieve the WSJ that talked more about equal outcomes on discipline.

Should be interesting as my kids tell me they do not start fights at the same rate. That ought to matter.

rse

Here's the WSJ-

"Students' Civil Rights to Get Scrutiny".

So much for post-racial America.

Can't you just imagine what the safe harbors will look like to avoid an OCR review?

Clarice

Thanks, rse.

Sue

Sean is reporting that Massa will indeed resign at 5:00 today.

Jane

I tell you the folks are going nuts on Cavuto. They say Massa is going to pull the veil off of what is really going on in Washington. The dems are saying -"it's a distraction". This is really becoming fun.

daddy

Clarice,

"How about we run a free online Anchorage newspaper..like the Washington Examiner here which is eating the (washington)Times and Post's lunch."

Wish we could because we so desperately need it. When I tried to figure out how to post at AT on the Begich corruption scandal, I discovered how hard it is because I couldn't link to any stories locally because they didn't exist. I'm stuck trying to listen to talk radio podcasts with the start/stop button, and asking frineds who said waht at local Assembly Meetings.

I hate the ADN, but I have to admire them as super capable gatekeepers. No news passes their editors unless its fuly screened and polished for maximum political advantage.
