This dovetails nicely with the strategic portion of the smackdown on the previous post. What he might've mentioned more explicitly is that the most significant reductions are unilateral (Russia is effectively already at the limit on strategic launchers, so the treaty essentially gives us permission to reduce our advantage). But the biggest question is on missile defenses. The White House insists it's not an issue:

No Constraints on Missile Defense and Conventional Strike: The Treaty does not contain any constraints on testing, development or deployment of current or planned U.S. missile defense programs or current or planned United States long-range conventional strike capabilities.
The Russians contend it is:
On U.S. missile defense, Administration officials insist the treaty places no "binding" limits on America's future plans. But the Kremlin in its statement said the link between offensive and defensive weapons "will be fixed in a legally binding way."
I suspect the Russians rolled us on that one as well. Is this more of that "smart diplomacy" we've been hearing about?

I was a crew member (RN) on a buffer. It don't matter whether we are full or partial the devastation is unequalled. Quibble all you want. Taking out just one or 20 doesn't mean squat. We need to upgrade and in a hurry. We have an ancient (in terms of nuclear potency) arsenal and ordinance at our disposal. The detail is in the specific ordinance we are negotiating. LUN The video of Pam Stout, a Tea Partier, on David Letterman. She does such a good job. One point is that when Dave tries to mock the Tea Party with the birther tag she questions Obama's school documentation too. He will have none of that though. He admits he doesn't know anything.
She does a really good job.

Pagar

Pam Stout did an excellent interview there. We need a whole lot more of conservative people getting the word out that the Tea Party people are the good people.

It sounds like any one going to the 15 April Tea Party gatherings or any other conservative activity needs to be sure there are good video cams going all the time.

Jane

I thought so too Janet. And I loved the audience applause when she talked about how awful government has gotten.

narciso the harpoon

One recalls that Pam was the subject of that David Bairstow piece in the Times, trying to paint the whole Tea Party as a militia. which
shows how shoddy the Times is. The first time
i came across Bairstow was in a Times account
that took the side of the thugs and drug dealers against Guiliani, painting them as
victims, Commentary did a column on it.

It is refreshing isn't it daddy, maybe only
Russians or people from territory that used

Janet

I also liked how she didn't sell out Glenn Beck. My Mom (late 70s) also likes how Beck makes her "think"...she went and read up on Calvin Coolidge because of his CPAC speech.

bgates

when Dave tries to mock the Tea Party with the birther tag she questions Obama's school documentation too.

I ended up being reasonably convinced by something that Obama was born in Hawaii, but it wasn't by anything he did. I think it's worth reminding people what the official story is:

A man from Kenya named Barack came to Hawaii and met a woman from Kansas named Stanley. Despite the fact that Barack was married to a woman in Kenya, he married Stanley. Seven months later they had a son they named Barack, after Barack, though he had already had a son with his first wife and had not named that child after himself. Within a year after that, Barack Sr had moved to Massachusetts; within two more years Barack and Stanley were divorced, and Barack moved back to Kenya where he married a third wife and had a total of five more children with his first wife, his third wife, and another woman (in addition to Barack Jr plus the two he had already had with his first wife). He only ever saw Barack Jr one time after moving back to Kenya, preferring to spend his time procreating and driving drunk; he killed himself in his third auto accident.
Meanwhile, three years after the divorce Stanley married an Indonesian man named Lolo Soetoro and moved with him to Indonesia where he worked as an army geologist and she practiced weaving. A couple of years after that, Stanley sent Barack back to Hawaii to live with her parents, Stanley and "Toot".

That's the official story, which is supposed to be so obviously true and unremarkable that to even raise an eyebrow is the equivalent of lynching Morgan Freeman or some equally beloved African American figure.

Obama's official family tree looks like this:
Stanley
Stanley's daughter Stanley
Stanley's husband Barack
Barack's son Barack

-and if anybody asks to see written documentation of that, well, speak up, because it's hard to hear you from under that Klan hood, you Nazi.

USA Today:

WASHINGTON — Americans anxious about unemployment and the economy increasingly blame President Obama for hard times, a USA TODAY/Gallup Poll finds, amid signs of turbulence in November's midterm elections.

Last week's jubilant signing of the health care overhaul, Obama's signature domestic initiative, seems to have given the president little boost. Instead, his standing on four personal qualities has sagged, and 50% of those surveyed say he doesn't deserve re-election.

Minus 10 at Raz.

Danube of Thought

Gallup:

PRINCETON, NJ -- Registered voters now say they prefer the Republican to the Democratic candidate in their district by 47% to 44% in the midterm congressional elections, the first time the GOP has led in 2010 election preferences since Gallup began weekly tracking of these in March. The March 22-28 results were obtained after the U.S. House's passage of landmark healthcare reform legislation on March 21. The shift toward Republicans raises the possibility that the healthcare bill had a slightly negative impact on the Democrats' political fortunes in the short run.

Today's 'Orwell Is Spinning' business headline: GM 21% U.S. Sales Gain Trails Estimates as Lineup Cut

A little deeper -

Analysts’ Estimates

The estimates for individual automakers are adjusted for the number of selling days in a month. March had 26 sales days, 1 more than a year earlier. Because of the extra day, adjusted sales will be about 4 percent lower than the actual figures.

On that basis, GM’s increase was 16 percent, compared with an average estimate of 25 percent, based on 6 analysts.

I don't want to shock anyone but 16 /= 21 and "trails" is not applicable as an honest adjective to a 36% blowout bust.

Apparently, Friends Don't Let Friends Drive Govmo has been very effective. Ford and Toyota appreciate the choices being made - even in the face of negative MinTruth propaganda campaigns.

Appalled, I know nothing of Johnson, though in his defense I have seen some positive and complimentary things said about him on blogs today.

Rob Crawford

Appalled, if he were a white Republican, he'd be leading the news tonight as an example of the dangerous, anti-science bias of "those people". If his illness is the problem, he should retire. If it wasn't because he's ill, he should retire in shame.

Plus he's married to Samantha Power.

Who is?

Samantha Power is one of the most frightening people to me in the universe.

(I've probably told this story) I saw her one sleepless night on the Colbert report. She was talking about her book, and her foreign policy which was in a nutshell: (this will sound familiar) "Be really nice to your enemies and they will come around."

Her book was about some guy who did this. Colbert said: "But he was murdered by his enemies" and she said: "yeah but it was about to work."

I absolutely completely and utterly believe this is Obama's foreign policy.

Captain Hate

Rob Crawford is correct but doesn't go far enough; if he were a white Republican he would be a staple of the MSM between now and November. Btw he's now claiming that what he said was to be taken as a "metaphor" for the ecological impact of locating that many people in Guam (at least I assume that's what he meant because a person that says "least widest" doesn't possess an extensive vocabulary with which to express himself).

My earlier writing about the circumstances of the Holy Birth put an idea in my head:

As a vassal of the state, I don't have standing to beg my lords for evidence of their Constitutional qualification to hold office. Couldn't they take more advantage of that?

Here's the scenario I'm imagining: Say the aristocDC announce that in order to bring America in line with the rest of the world, increase our global competitiveness, &c, they're mandating a move to the metric system for all measurements including time; thus, a year is now deemed to be 1,000 days. Therefore the current Congressional term extends until July 29, 2012. The courts couldn't become involved in the legislature setting rules for itself like that, could they?

Returning to the topic of the post for a sec:

I'm not sure there is anything new under the sun here. I am pretty certain that the history of 'arms-control' has always had a lot of push-pull about counting warheads versus delivery vehicles. Payloads, do ALCMs count, MIRVs, MIRV upgrades, silo size, missile 'throw-weight' ... it's pretty hair-splitting stuff.

I think that these days, having more bombers (because they count for less) is good for us- because we can fill them with conventional bombs and make people nervous. Like Pakistan.

OTOH, if it's Obama's posturing that you find hateful, look at the bright side- he could have showed up suddenly in person... we would have ended up trading the Russians all of our warheads for promises of future negotiations.

matt

free;

my father was on the negotiating team back in the 60's. Every warhead and delivery method was accounted for and factored into the equation. 1 Minuteman x 3 warheads = 3 warheads. Clear as glass. The theologians arguing angels and pinheads had nothing on these guys and there was a good reason. The calculus of nuclear warfare allows no gray areas or mistakes.

MAD was explicitly understood by both sides and was the reason it didn't all go poof in 1961.

Now, on the other hand, we have a weak and duplicitous President. That is the joker factor. Lord help us. If neither the US nor Russia can be trusted, an incident is almost guaranteed.

One of the best April Fool jokes I have seen on the internet is at Neoneocon dot com. Very well done. Only when you read the comments to her post does she reveal it as a joke. But, then the fun really begins reading all the comments.

Happy Birthday to Mrs. Iggy! A blessed Good Friday to all.

Janet

A GROWING DANCE!!! Well that is it for me. We are now officially celebrating pagan rituals. A sharp u-turn from our Judeo-Christian heritage while we speed toward...what? Pagan chanting?
22Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,

23And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.

24Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:

25Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen. Romans 1: 22-25

Janet

LUN is the link to the article centralcal mentions.
It is ludicrous to celebrate a garden. A garden for goodness sake! People in America have gardens. What do the Obama's think seed catalogs and nurseries sell?
Mind boggling stupid...

Janet

From the article -
White House assistant chef Sam Kass, who oversees the garden, joined in for the last round of the dance.

Here is a picture of him(the bald guy) on a day that he wasn't dancing around rhubarb.

Janet

One more rant (4 posts in a row is too many!)-
A personality trait of those on the left is that whenever they get into some new hobby or lifestyle they love, they immediately think they must make everyone else get into it.
gardening, bike riding, bird watching, green living,...
They become "big experts" on what we all should be doing.

Porchlight

Janet,

I have a lib friend who is just like that. Went absolutely whole hog for green living/gardening a couple years back. Now talks of nothing else (except when she's talking about knitting and sewing, or "being involved" at her kid's school, or whatever other pet activity she's latched on to etc.). Of course she loves MOO's initiatives and thinks everyone should be eating 100% organic.

The phood phreaks and the green freaks have odd priorities. They are soooo prescriptive about what other people's lifestyles should be. But they think it's people on the *right* who want to tell everyone how to behave and live.
