Captain Ed is sneak-previewing a new Barack-basher, The Manchurian President: Barack Obama's Ties to Communists, Socialists and Other Anti-American Extremists. A hint of things to come:
In just one of the revelations in this politically radioactive release, the book uncovers for the first time where and how Obama first met Weatherman founder Bill Ayers – and it is much earlier than previously believed.
Previously believed by whom - our credulous mainstream media, who were lied to throughout the campaign by Team Obama? (David Remnick of the New Yorker preferred the word "disingenuous" to describe Obama's behavior, and contradicted another aspect of the official Obama/Ayers story.)
Still, for those scoring at home the current implausible Team Obama story is that Obama met Bill Ayers in 1995. In their latest telling Bill Ayers toiled for a year pulling together the Chicago Annenberg Challenge, maintaining harmonious relationships with other backers and founders before, during and after the process. However, for no discernible reason Bill Ayers played no role at all in selecting the Chicago Annenberg Challenge chairman, the post that went to Barack Obama in 1995, after which Obama and Ayers met. Only the NY Times could believe that, or pretend to; Steve Diamond's pushback is here.
And my guess as to when they met? 1988 seems like easy money - per "Dreams From My Father", Obama was working on a city-wide push for education reform as part of a coalition coordinated by Bill Ayers. Per this hypothesis, Ayers then resumes his collaboration with Obama in 1995 on the Chicago Annenberg Challenge.
But Steve Diamond wants to go even further back:
Barack Obama visited the house of Tom and Mary Ayers, parents of former Weather Underground activist turned education professor Bill Ayers, in the mid-1980s to thank the Ayers’ for their support of his education, according to Allen Hulton, the letter carrier who delivered mail to the Ayers’ Glen Ellyn home at that time. Glen Ellyn is a suburb of Chicago, southwest of the city.
Hulton spoke to King Harvest at length about his experience. The statement by Hulton is the first eyewitness account of a possible relationship between Obama and Tom Ayers and the first that dates his relationship with the Ayers family to the mid-1980s.
The postman always rings twice, and apparently was chatty with the missus:
“Mrs. Ayers told me that her family had been helping out a brilliant young black man,” Hulton said and whom he believes she said was from Kenya. Hulton said that over the period of six to ten years that he delivered mail to the Ayers home he had numerous conversations with Mrs. Ayers, one conversation with Thomas Ayers and several brief encounters with Bernardine Dohrn who he said lived at the home for several months at one point in time. He never met or saw Bill Ayers at the home.
As to the encounter:
As Hulton was on the sidewalk walking away from the Ayers house a tall and thin young black man was coming up the same sidewalk towards the Ayers house.
Hulton recalls that Obama said hello and introduced himself and stopped to chat with him in front of the Ayers house. “I recall that his ears stuck out a little bit. He was more gaunt then than he appears now. His name was an unusual one and when I saw his photo during the campaign it brought back my memory of the event,” Hulton said.
Mr. Obama explained that he had taken the train out from Chicago to visit the Ayers’ in order to thank them for their help with his “education.” At this time, Mr. Obama had recently graduated from Columbia and would soon enter Harvard Law School. Hulton and Obama “spoke for a few minutes, first chatting about the Ayers family,” Hulton said. Hulton said he did not learn whether the help Obama received from the Ayers’ was financial or in some other form.
Puzzling. I will say this - I will be shocked if the new revelations in the latest book shock me.
DO WE HEAR "COLUMBIA"?: Well, Obama was there when Bill Ayers was studying a few blocks away and everyone was protesting for South African divestment. Of course, the Weathermen robbed a Brinks truck and became radioactive, so Obama will never admit to this; now, he pretends that he never heard of the Weathermen and thought they did their criminal stuff in the late 60's when he was a mere lad. If one is looking for a motive for Obama to continue the cover-up, this would work.
They had to have met while Obama was at Columbia. Even without Hulton's story it stands to reason, given their mutual interest i the same radical causes.

New Zeal has done yeoman work in documenting these ties. It seems natural that Obama should've have come to Chicago with a letter of introduction (so to speak) to area communists from former Chicago communist Frank Marshall Davis.
Posted by: anduril | May 01, 2010 at 01:13 PM
Porchlight, my guess would be a Das Kapital reading group as the place Obama and Ayres met while Obama was at Columbia. Or some other sort of leftist reading group or organization.
Posted by: Thomas Collins | May 01, 2010 at 01:15 PM
The most interesting thing about Hulton's story to me is that it seemed as if Obama had never actually met the Ayerses until that visit. As if they had semi-anonymously helped bankroll his education, perhaps as a result of recruitment by a third party.

Obama has extensive ties to the Social Democratic Party, part of the Socialist International, which is populated by large numbers of radical leftists of various sorts. What is not so well known is the degree of control that the Social Democrats exercise over the Democrat party.
Posted by: anduril | May 01, 2010 at 01:17 PM
TC, something like that. I imagine that the radical chic social scene in those years wasn't so huge that a "star" like Ayers couldn't have been fairly easily sought out by an interested party. Or perhaps someone else made the necessary introductions.

there a complex nexus connecting obama and chicago:
tom ayers and valerie jarrett's parents, and frank marshall davis and alinsky/kellman, farrakhan/percy sutton/mansour/rev wright, sidley-austin/daley/rezko/blago/rahm.
obama's 17 year old mother (who was from washington and was living in hawaii) was - for some unexplained reason - an au pair in chicago in 1960.
all this is detailed here - with more than a dozen links and several lingering troubling questions:

You birds can't seem to shake the boogie man of conservatives. Since the Soviet Empire was splintered into a dozen pieces, you had been searching for another cause, and were gifted with the Jihadists. Their schisms have been diluted, and although the fire is still on, the pot is merely simmering.
Now, like a dog which returns to it's vomit, you can't help but resurrect that tired rant from yesteryear. It's in your genetic code, and probably won't be extracted for several generations of Jim Crows. After all, we all know the Civil Rights Movement was populated with 'Commies'.

crime of 'guilt by association'
You obviously don't know what that means. The morons who came up with the line "Pontius Pilate was a governor" were practicing guilt by association: taking one characteristic shared by two people with virtually nothing in common and using it to imply those two people were virtually identical. Saying that two people who have a deep interest in politics, share certain political views, and have had a close working relationship for decades in support of their shared political views may be more alike than they're letting on is not guilt by association. More like guilt of associating.

I'm a big Neil Young fan but I never respected what he tried to do with that song (or with "Alabama"). Who is the "Southern man" to whom the song is addressed? Obviously he means Southern white men. But there are Southern black men, too. His failure to make that distinction is condescending at best.

I saw him in a movie/doc a few years ago and he reminded me of my father in looks so he's not exactly a young buck anymore. I've always been amused with how the punk rockers like him: His voice isn't great, his lyrics are no great shakes and his guitar playing is ok; but the songs are greater than the sum of the parts. The punk ethos personified!

You do realize that the Ayers family helping a "brilliant young black man" begs the question - why would they do that - unless they had known him for a while and decided to do so based on criteria that were persuasive enough to them to spend money on his education.
So the mailman's story points to an earlier genesis to the relationship - much earlier - for Obama was coming to thank them for the education he had just completed - at Columbia. It's logical to assume, then, that Obama met Bill Ayers at Columbia and they became friends - friends enough that Ayers persuaded his parents to assist Obama with his education.

I know about the ties between the firm's senior partner and Tom Ayers. But still ... what could she really bring to such a firm, except more radicalism due to her continued Marxist views?

After reading Relipundit's link, I have a new theory on the Dunham/X connection.
Dunham went to Chicago in 1960 to be an au pair. However, she REALLY went to go work on the newspaper Muhammed Speaks cofounded in Chicago in 1960 by Malcolm X, then starting to be the largest black paper of the time. At the direction of Frank Marshall. Also the Nation of Islam center was in the south side of Chicago back then.
Although X lived in Ne York at the time with his family, presumably he went to Chicago often to check on his paper. And met starry eyed Ann...

I am suspicious that a mailman suddenly came out of nowhere, remembers obama AND a conversation with Mrs. Ayers recalling her exact words that obama was brilliant and from Kenya. For him to recall this so well after 30+ years and be willing to involve himself in exposing obama--that seems somewhat fishy to me. I welcome exposure of any and all of Lord O'Bowdown's lies, especially since we have only his books (LOL) to go on. obama is wastrel and a crook and I do not support him, his Marxist policies or his cabal of criminals.
This May 14th, in Harlem in NYC, Pastor James Manning from Atlah ministries has scheduled a CIA/Columbia trial because he says he will present evidence that obama never earned a degree from Columbia. He believes from his evidence that Columbia was probably bought off and that there was a shady crime committed by giving obama a diploma he never earned. That may be the tip of the iceberg.
You may see why I say it is just a little too convenient for the postman to come forth at this time to give testimony in a book released now --right before the trial. I am not saying I doubt the authors of The Manchurian President, because they could have been duped. We can't see obama's real documents and the other hidden papers so I guess we just have to trust a mailman's memories from 30+ years ago, don't we? I wonder if this revelation was manufactured by the cabal to cover up another bigger and even more damaging lie?

Like Steve Diamond, I have always thought Republicans & McCain made a massive strategic error when they went after Obama's connection to Ayers, the former bomb-maker, instead of Ayers, the subversive educator coming to a school near you. Tarring the terrorist association angle as retrograde hysteria was campaign childsplay for Team Obama and the media. The fact that Ayers' influence remains a clear and present danger got completely lost in the resulting static -- and the federalization of American education made a great leap forward in the Stimulus plan.
Back in September '08, I tracked the Obama/Ayers mission from Chicago to mainstream DC, when I wrote Radical Planks in the Democratic Platform over at QBlog. I also reviewed the platform as the Chicago Annenberg Challenge model writ large in The Howdy Partner! Platform.

The mailman thing seems odd to me too, but this is not the first time it's been reported. IIRC, he turned up quite some time ago. I'd be interested in knowing if the man is black, which would at least make Obama's casual confidences somewhat plausible back when he was forging his new identity. The conversation with Mrs. Ayers does seem awfully convenient, although perhaps she styled herself a populist Lady Bountiful.

"a lot of Americans that don't care if he was in the Weather Underground."
Many of those Americans who don't care about his background are educating our Children. We are allowing these people to destroy America.
"Ayers’s influence on what is taught in the nation’s public schools is likely to grow in the future. Last month, he was elected vice president for curriculum of the 25,000-member American Educational Research Association (AERA), the nation’s largest organization of education-school professors and researchers. Ayers won the election handily, and there is no doubt that his fellow education professors knew whom they were voting for."

"who has essentially no publications"
DrJ, Did you check his Venezuela stuff?
I know he has made some speeches there, I wouldn't be surprised if there are some Chavez/Castro promoting publications down there.

WSJ: "The impact of Arizona's new law was evident in Washington, D.C., where a re-energized local immigration overhaul movement gathered outside the White House and saw almost three dozen activists including U.S Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D., Ill.) arrested for civil disobedience.
At a rally before the arrests, protesters chanted in Spanish, "We are all Arizona" and carried signs saying "Shame on Arizona," and vendors sold out of buttons asking "Am I legal?" in a reference to the new law's requirement that law-enforcement officials to question people who they reasonably believe to be in the U.S. illegally."
To the contrary: Viva Arizona!
Pukey Los Angeles mayor Villar(aigosa) and forever disappointing Cardinal Mahoney stoked the union rent-a-thugs and just plain dupes, citizens and unfortunate illegals.

Has anybody ever considered that our great presidente' may have been involved in this crime? He was in New York at the time right. He may have known Ayers or maybe members of those black nationalist groups, I'm just saying.

I'd guess Barry would lack the ability to participate in any real action. He lets others take risks just like Billy Ayers did most of the time. Ayers would rather write than fight, and he writes easily and always more than is required. In another universe, he stuck to harmless fiction; in this one he is a dangerous propagandist.

Chavez/Castro promoting publications down there.
Those don't "count." Presentations are a different matter -- he has lots of those. Publications, in the academic sense, are those published in refereed professional journals. I recall that Ayers has about a half dozen of those, though that is from memory only and so might not be quite right.
Posted by: DrJ | May 01, 2010 at 09:00 PM
Irregardless of rather they count. The Venezuela connections are important. For one thing, Chesa Boudin, who the Ayers raised to become a Rhoades Scholar is extremely close to Chavez. "Perhaps their continuing influence over Obama helps explain why the President has been so accommodating toward Chavez"
Boudin has at least two books Published .
The article in the link "Bill Ayers and Hugo Chavez blood brothers in terror".
It would be interesting to determine how much of the anti American efforts from Castro and Chavez came directly from the Ayers or Boudin.

JMH-
Sounds like we should talk about federalizing education. It's actually worse than you think. ARRA was the trigger for what they have wanted for a while.
Dr J-
Ayers books may not be worthwhile but unfortunately they are required reading at ed schools all over.
These days our US ed system is too often equivalent to med schools saying they will only teach bloodletting and then saying only a person with a med degree can touch someone sick.

Pagar,
No question that Ayers' connections do matter, and that Chavez is one. I was addressing the more stuffy issue of what counts when evaluating the performance of an academic. Traditionally that is peer-reviewed publications. Cornell West got into a fight with Harvard whether his rap videos would "count" for academic credentials. Harvard said "no." West is now at Princeton.
rse,
I'll take your word that the the ed schools read his stuff. I don't really know that world -- I'm more of a hard sciences/engineering sort. I had my run-ins with the "studies" departments, but not the ed school.

JMH In 2006 Millions turned out to rally for amnesty; 500,000 alone in L.A. This year the figures were down everywhere, but you'd not get that impression from this very misleading AP article.

Be glad you don't.
I know you're the hard sciences sort and talented at it. We've had some discusions in the past on what was going on in the EHR division of NSF.
Fortunately for you that equity and social justice in math and science funding is leaving NSF.
Unfortunately for the country it's relocating to the DOE with almost twice the funding.
The national tragedy is that we so want equal outcomes that we are literally changing the nature of math and science courses in our schools.
Bill Ayers is a big part of that. When you have a minute look into his colleague Eric Gutstein and what he is doing to math in this country.

He does have a record of experiments with extremely rapid oxidation.

Really? That's good news. NSF has lots of really good people and programs, but some are a bit "out there." I'm pleased that some these are now gone.
Unfortunately for the country it's relocating to the DOE with almost twice the funding.
That's a shame. I'd like to see this department eliminated, truth be told.
I'll try to look up Gutstein.

a lot of Americans that don't care if he was in the Weather Underground.
I wish it were only that they don't care. I believe many think it's a plus. So many people still gush over the 1960s and 70s as though it were some great time when people "really cared." Sure, maybe Ayers went a bit too far, but those were youthful indiscretions, and are evidence of his commitment and passion for justice, blah, blah. It's sickening.

Obama, Ayers and Dohrn all lived within blocks of each other in NYC at the same time, from 1980-81 on. Given what Obama would be reading in the NY newspapers at that time- Anti-Apartheid demonstrations, the Brink's robbery, and Dohrn doing 7 months time in a NYC jail, and given Obama's penchant for radicals, it is no stretch to believe he sought out Ayers.
This site LUN gives a timeline of Ayers/Dohrn/Obama in NYC. Scroll way down to 1980-81.

Although this is 1969, way before Obama's time at Columbia, it shows just how close Ayers was to the Black Panthers. From Bill Ayers blog in his own words.

Wasn't there talk about Ayers and Obama attending the same Marxist events at the Coopers Union?
Posted by: Rocco | May 01, 2010 at 10:45 PM
IMO, William Ayers and those who believe like he does are some of the most dangerous people in America. Not only do they have the ability to reach a lot of ordinary people/students and sway them to the Communist way of thinking, but they also have direct access to the President and his czars.
Posted by: Pagar | May 01, 2010 at 10:47 PM
his colleague Eric Gutstein
Seems to be another UIC education "social justice" communist. What am I not surprised? At least he has a few publications, for whatever they are worth.
