Last week, following criticism from the NY Times and Rolling Stone, the official estimate of the oil leak in the Gulf was doubled.
New Estimates Double Rate of Oil Flowing Into Gulf
By JUSTIN GILLIS and HENRY FOUNTAINA government panel on Thursday essentially doubled its estimate of how much oil has been spewing from the out-of-control BP well, with the new calculation suggesting that an amount equivalent to the Exxon Valdez disaster could be flowing into the Gulf of Mexico every 8 to 10 days.
The new estimate is 25,000 to 30,000 barrels of oil a day. That range, still preliminary, is far above the previous estimate of 12,000 to 19,000 barrels a day.
However, we eagerly await more revisions. The new figures apply to the rate of flow before BP implemented its plan to snip the riser pipe and try to cap the well at the wellhead on the ocean floor. Before, oil had been flowing through a kinked riser pipe; afterwards, the consensus was that oil would flow more quickly straight the well head (that's bad) but BP would be able to put a better cap on the clean break (good!)
So how much faster is oil glowing now? Well, that is the revised figure the world awaits. The previous government estimate was that cutting the riser pipe would increase the flow by 20%. However, the Times had this last Monday:
At least one expert, Ira Leifer, who is part of a government team charged with estimating the flow rate, is convinced that the operation has made the leak worse, perhaps far worse than the 20 percent increase that government officials warned might occur when the riser was cut.
Dr. Leifer said in an interview on Monday that judging from the video, cutting the pipe might have led to a several-fold increase in the flow rate from the well.
“The well pipe clearly is fluxing way more than it did before,” said Dr. Leifer, a researcher at the University of California, Santa Barbara. “By way more, I don’t mean 20 percent, I mean multiple factors.”
Yike! It is possible that sometime this week we will have a press announcement the gist of which will be that the old estimate was that 12,000 to 19,000 barrels were leaking each day, which increased to 14,000 to 23,000 barrels after the riser was cut. However, the new revised estimate will be that the flow of 25,000 to 30,000 has been increased to 75,000 to 90,000 barrels per day. The good news is that BP is capturing 15,000 barrels per day of the new flow with their improved cap. The bad news will be that 60,000 to 75,000 barrels per day are not being captured.
Obviously, if the well was leaking 30,000 barrels a day before it was re-capped and is now leaking a net of 60,000 barrels a day, the decision to cut the riser will be subject to some vigorous second-guessing.
Obama made clear at his May 27th press conference that he was in charge:
But make no mistake: BP is operating at our direction. Every key decision and action they take must be approved by us in advance.
I hope we get lucky and the revised figures are not this grim. But there may be howling this week.
OT, saw a great bumper sticker this weekend. "If you voted for Obama, apologize to my children."

Lost in the hysteria about the spill: This oil is a *big find*, that when controlled could become a terrific source of oil.

Appreciaiing that the new rule is there are no rules, where does the President get off demanding a (foreign) company take company cash and place it in the hands of a third party to distribute as that person sees fit...unless some appropriate court has so ordered? Why would a company ever do that? What do they get in return for paying a claim before said claim has been adjudicated?
I am confused.

I really, really hate to even bring this up, but...
Frankly, I have no confidence in a government appointed panel who is making an assessment of the oil spill rate SOLELY for the purpose of figuring out how much the Government is going to be able to extort from BP. Yeah, sure, and how much of that money will be skimmed off the top to support Obama's spending habits?

Just to let all JOMer's know, the British press in some sectors has always had a bad mouth for the States. Mostly, because we are fat, ignorant, loud and uneducated but that hides jealousy and vanity of a lost pride. Now, it is reappearing in a most interesting fashion - Obama is in fact making enemies of friends and coddles our enemies. Now the Brits are not so much questioning the empty suit but the people who bought it. This is troubling in the sense that they still can't bring themselves to say he is the problem but that we are because we elected him (even though they still LIKE him). It is very weird watching the talking heads here on TV tie themselves up in knots trying to explain how smart Obama is and how dumb Americans were for electing him. It is more surreal than then the NY Post headline USA 1 England 1 - America Wins!!
Obama hasn't disappointed them - we have for electing him. Go figure!

Bye Bye rigs' heads up about the Watts Up link to the Fox Report is the biggest political development. The spill is a political disater for everyone, because, well it is a disaster hurting so many so deeply, so Barry O suffers politicaly fairly or unfairly. BUT, this ADMISSION by the Interior secy that he and BARRY O alone decided the 6 month moratiorium AGAINST the advise of government off shore oil experts is a dramatic development for the worse. The moratorium is a bad idea on so many levels, starting with it ends the Gulf oil exploration industry, ends tens of thousands of good jobs, and drives up the price of oil and increases foreign oil dependency. The lefties think that's good, but the swing voters (the only ones who count) will be outraged. So why did Barry O do it? This is hard left Alinsky/Obama using the disaster to get something Obama can't get through "regular" politics, the end of US oil production and steep subsidies for the fantasy wind/solar economy. Wind/solar is a fantasy of the Left, but a nightmare for the rest of us, as it gives government and large rent seekers (GE, Siemans, GM etc etc) control of the energy market. But Barry O is a hard Left control freak, and if he loses the 2012 election war but wins the big prize of gov't control of energy, he'll figure out how to get back into power-- one way or the other. It's all about POWER --Political Power-- with this crew, they aim to make the USA a large Cook County One Party machine where the Fed. Gov't controls all. Sorry but that's what we are looking at.

The interior secretary, Ken Salazar, makes a lot of decisions by himself.
Here is Ken deciding to create a ">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xaXv_x8eCOg&feature=player_embedded"> drought.
Turning water on is his decision and he says it would be "admitting failure" to turn those pumps on.
This administration would rather keep their mouths shut, if they can, than admit anything.
This video is a good example on how the minds of these clowns operate. Sad thing is, this proves they can create a crisis wenever they want. The oil spill just happened to happen.

News to me ( probably not to Kim ):
The UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change misled the press and public into believing that thousands of scientists backed its claims on manmade global warming, according to Mike Hulme, a prominent climate scientist and IPCC insider. The actual number of scientists who backed that claim was “only a few dozen experts,” he states in a paper for Progress in Physical Geography, co-authored with student Martin Mahony.

Yes, Hulme is probably playing a deep game, he's been a whole hog believer. It's important to remember that this refers to the determination of a 90% likelihood that the warming is anthropogenic, but it does highlight the small coterie of scientists at the center of this 'Extraordinary Popular Delusion and Madness of the Crowd.'

Porchlight,
Thanks for that link. Frighteningly informative.
OT,
The very good news is FOX News is now on tube in my Taipei Hotel, so hopefully all over Taipei. Excellent.
This may not seem like much, but in my opinion it is a big deal and long needed. It removes the monopoly influence of CNN International and BBC. Viewers actually have alternatives now---the standard left wing message shapers have an opponent.
FOX channel wise has a great location. Right at the beginning of the channel scale, number 2, then CNN is 3 BBC 5 etc. So they are prominent and not lost in the mid fifties numbers that nobody ever gets to.
Even better, is that during the spaces where advertising would normally appear, FOX just continues with smaller updates and news segments. And when I compare that to CNN, they still fill their ad spaces with nauseating, self-applauding ads about how wonderful their CNN reporters are. I can't think of any plot more deviously hatched than self-congratualtory ads to force viewers to change the channel. An excellent development.

Adm. Thad W. Allen of the Coast Guard, the national commander for the spill, said in an interview that shortcomings in the response did not stem from the actions described in the plans, but from the risk assessment on which those plans were based.
It's not our fault, it's the crappy planning.

Here's the lady who's running against the North Carolina Assaulter.
">http://www.reneeforcongress.com/"> Renee Ellmers.
She's a Nurse, and looks like from a small video at the bottom of the link she's anti-Health Care. She's also cute!
Suppose if she wins we'll have to give all the credit to Hillary Clinton, as I believe thats the new lefty talking point of why so many Repub women are winning elections.

And Bobby Jindal needs to sit down, shut up, and play nice.
Gov. Bobby Jindal of Louisiana, for example, has drawn local support for his fact-filled critiques of the response plans, but every 48 hours a state representative cooperates on those same plans with BP and the Coast Guard.
“I told him, when he signs the plan he’s endorsing our projects,” said Captain Laferriere, adding that he and the representative sit in the same office. “Louisiana is still learning the process.”

Please ... none of these experts are fluid dynamic scientists ... they are all environmental nuts ... without a computer they couldn't even do basic math ...
Until someone talks about the measured pressure coming out of the well we are just making wild a** guesses ...

Maybe I'll change my name to Cher or Liza Minnelli and run for Mayor of San Francisco. Could it be that easy?
This whole time we thought it was about ideology...but Obama showed us it was an "American Idol" type election. So maybe it will work.
Hey Detroit! My name is Dianna Ross & I'm asking for your vote this November. Motown Rules!

Daddy,
She is, and smart, and a medical professional who understands one of the BIG ISSUEs . If I had any extra I'd give it to her. She's way behind cash-ways. Meant to point her out here previously, but got caught up in your wit.

For those who were wondering, let the record show that Krauthammer and Steve Hayes were on the Fox all-star panel together tonight.

No Janet. You also have to use a small saw around the circumference of your skull and empty your brain pan to make it a level playing field with the likes of Gavin Newsome.

Hey Bill,
It's the headline, stupid.
Sarah, nor her advocates, never described her (self) as a Saint.

Well Narciso,
I hope this new Oil Spill commission was screened more closely than the last Oil Spill commission, as I don't want Chu to have to come in again and fire any world class physicists for having anti-Gay Marriage views. Lets hope this things politically correct from the git-go.
