Race relations seem to be the ONLY thing Obama jumps into head on.. the only thing he seems to have his mind made up on ahead of time. He lags on so much.. dealing with BP, Jan Brewer, Afghanistan, even health care. I knew he was full of it when he claimed to believe he is leading a post-racial nation, but even I am surprised that race (more specifically, fighting "racism") is MORE important to him than everything else combined. I would be interested to see some poll results regarding whether people think he's helping or hurting the issue.

He apparently osted what he had..and in any event the answer of the NAACP was not to push for her firing but to release the full tape which was in their possession. I suppose she has a claim --or would have--against the NAACP to using that snippet to demand her removal -a careless act on their part.

In any event if editing what a person actualy said to make it sound worse were libel, no news media would be left standing.

Breitbart knew the piece was edited (it's pretty obvious), and ran with it before getting the full video. His failing to get the full video is hardly prudent, and his anxiety to prove that NAACP people are racist might be a factor in proving malice.

Has it been established that the speech was edited - sliced and diced as the left is so fond of saying? I think the only slicing and dicing was done by the NAACP at minute 21 - the rest of it was the same on both tapes.

Breitbart posted part of the speech, and announce with the post, that was all he had and he had been unable to get the rest.

The NAACP didn't even bother to look at the entire speech IN ITS POSSESSION before it demanded Sherrod be fired.

So I say, bring it on, and Breitbart can countersue for frivolity.

Every quote you read in the papers is edited; every video is edited. Most often the editing is unfair and reflective these days of the bias of the interviewer.

The question is did she say what the video says she did? And she clearly did. Did she say something else which might soften her racist statements, apparently so, but not publishing everything she said isn't libel especially when you don't have everything she said, appalled.

I don't accept the assertion that the Breitbart excerpt conveys the "exact opposite" of what the entire speech was about. The excerpt included her saying that she came to realize that it wasn't about black vs. white, but instead was about haves vs. have-nots.

Appalled, leaving aside the technicalities of the law of defamation, since you are claiming "100% misrepresenting," may I assume you have carefully listened to the entire tape or carefully studied the entire transcript, or are you relying on what has been said by others about the entire speech. I am really trying to find an analysis of the entire speech which I find reliable. Most of what I am reading now is full of outrage and high dudgeon (not about the fact that the audience apparently expressed approval of blatant race discrimination or Sherrod's one time explicit approval of race discrimination, but upon the failure to acknowledge the asserted change of heart), but not much analysis of her actual subsequent words.

By the way, I'd like to take a poll. How many of you who are so outraged about Breitbart expressed outrage at Teddy K when he made the following statement:

And in this case, I am kind of outraged that Breitbart dragged in some obscure mid-level functionary, posted her anecdote out of context, and cost her her job, and subjected her to ridicule for a point she was not actually trying to make.

I dislike Michael Moore and Borat for much the same reason. There's something gruesome when Big Media, and the Big Rich People associated with it find some little person and mess with their lives. (Captain Hate's comment about MM is apt, though he has me thinking of a scene from Monty Python's The Meaning of Life in a way that is not good lunchtime fare)

In this case, though, there's a lot more harm done to a specific individual, in that she becomes the media storm of the day, and because the context of what she is saying is so screwed up by the editing done by Breitbart's source. And no amount of caveats mitigates the reasonably predictable harm to this person.

I haven't seen a retraction from James Clyburn for calling Alvin Greene a "plant" who lied about paying his filing fees with his own money, and calling on the US Attorney to investigate him. Greene was cleared of any wrongdoing, but I wish he could sue Clyburn, who wasn't interested in learning the facts before appearing all over tv/radio with his character impuning charges.

I hated Kennedy's speech at the time it was made, and expressed my dislike of it to my then girlfriend/now wife. This resulted in a political debate that raged on for a week or so, with no minds being changed. Nevertheless, I do not buy the comparison, because Bork was a presidential appointee to an important seat (and, therefore, had an expectation of being subjected to this stuff), while Ms Sherrod was, until now, just an obscure functionary doing her job.

This is what gets me: If this had been a private employer she would've been, at the worst, put on unpaid leave while this was investigated. Otherwise a valid wrongful termination suit would be forthcoming and won despite whatever might be on the full tape.

On first impact they have one main thing in common besides Breitbart (something I've experienced quite a bit as a closet conservative in a lefty town/occupation): the hate expressed by leftists when they think they're alone in the room.

Breitbart is out to expose those expressions of hate. Whatever his particular role in the Sherrod story has been, it seems his work is more essential than ever.

Not buying any. This isn't an example (a la MoDo) of snipping a few words inside a sentence to change the meaning, this is an unedited video of more than a minutes' length, in which she admits disparate treatment based on race (and what appears to me to be illegal racial discrimination to general audience approval). And personally, I didn't find the whole race-baiting class warfare crap terribly compelling (nor do I buy her anecdotals about various BLT-inspired founding myths and supposed personal inside knowledge of lynching tossed off with reckless abandon). If that "context" is supposed to make me feel good about Sherrod, I'd have to have to extend the same consideration to Rev Wright . . . and I'm not going to.

Moreover, Breitbart is not under any obligation to post the next ten minutes' worth in order to provide context, nor would we even be discussing context if a white government representative had said something remotely similar in relation to an African-American client. In short, we can do without her or her race-fixated ilk in public service.

Actually, because of your misreading of both journalism and libel, you are perhaps more exposed to the charge of libel than Breitbart.

Journalists do the best they can to be accurate, and later on, if necessary, report further to improve their accuracy. Breitbart has done that. You have yet to point out Breitbart's further information. Libel doesn't require accuracy as much as it deals with intention and correction. Your misrepresentations of both Breitbart and of libel still stand.

If Breitbart weren't so much a public figure that Times v. Sullivan takes effect, you might be in jeopardy.

But, then, who am I to school Appalled. I know better.

I would not be surprised to find that that video passed through several hands before it got to Breitbart,and the person who passed it to him was wholly unaware of the rest of the video. That's true hit, but somebody had to truncate it originally and why would someone edit it in that way unless to deceive?
And it seems unlikely someone with a right wing perspective would have done it considering the likelihood of the NAACP or someone else having a full length version of it.
Looks like possibly a set up to me and one Breitbart could have avoided with a little vetting.

The investigation looked into whether the Bush administration dismissed the nine U.S. attorneys as a way to influence investigations. The scandal contributed to mounting criticism that the administration had politicized the Justice Department, a charge that contributed to the resignation of Attorney General Alberto Gonzales.
The people who spoke do The Associated Press about the case did so on condition of anonymity because an official announcement has not been made.
In 2008, the Justice Department assigned Nora Dannehy, a career prosecutor from Connecticut with a history of rooting out government wrongdoing, to investigate the firings. One of the people who spoke to the AP, a lawyer, said Dannehy called him Wednesday afternoon and told him no charges would be filed.
